ELEMENTS

________________________ In this first part of the semester we explored how different joints came together with different combinations.Using certain words we attempted to visually define these word combinations and eventually combine them together in order to create a sort of structure. By the end of the Elements section we ended up with framework for the next phase of the project.

SECRETLY INTERLOCKING

The reason why I chose to define this as secretly interlocking is that not only is the central peice hidden from view when you look at the cube from the side but also the method in which the joints slide and interlock with each other is not visible unless one would pull out the pieces.

CORNERLY FOLDING The structure that I chose here focuses heavily on the dovetail joint. The reason I utlizied this for the phrase “Cornerly Folding” is becasue the dovetail joint is incredibly versitile and is able to “fold” in many ways that allow different structures of combinations to be created.

For this part of the portfolio you can see the different combinations of my word joints. The Secretly Interlocking/Cornerly Folding, Secretly Interlocking/Internally Nesting, and Internally Nesting/Cornerly Folding. The exploded axonometrics show how each of the peices in these word joints interlock with each other and one can understand where the word descriptions of the combinations come in.

The joint combination that I chose to focus on was the combination of Internally Nesting/ Cornerly Folding. To the left we see a physical model and below is an unfolded Rhino model showing the out of joint. The next part of this particular spread shows the choreography of both the original word combination and a choreography of the out-of-joint model.

Below is the section views of the out-of-joint model. They show the sections from a straight on angle rather than from a perspective view. One is able to see how the peg in the interior is holding up the interior box. One is also able to see exactly how the two wall peices on the right and left section views interact with each other.

This final section of Elements shows the final views of our out-ofjoint model. Above is the section axonometrics of my out-of-joint model. It is showing the interior perspectives of my model that would normally be difficult to view. One is able to see where the pieces interlock and the way the interior pieces and forms are positioned.

ENCLOSURE

________________________ With this next part of the semester’s project we began to understand how to enclose a space and give it volume. We delved into understanding movements and rituals of the day within a space and how to surround those movements within our structure from the ELEMENTS part of the project.

15

16

BODY SEQUENCES The above ritual space is unique becasue it contains 4 different positions in one ritual space. Sitting and doing writing work, Sitting up straight, sitting and leaning back, and laying down. It allows for one to rest in many different positions.

Here are the body sequences for sitting down and playing basketball. As I edit my site I will do so in order to accomodate these body sequences in the best way possible

17

The above and below ritual spaces are meant for the work ritual of playing basketball. The way the wall is bent is meant to allow for the basketball to easily bounce back when it’s thrown so that the user can keep playing with the ball keep coming back.

ORIGINAL SITE

To the left is my original incorporation of my rituals into the site. Fo my sitting ritual it incorporsted nicely and melded into the design and “walls” of the site perfectly creating enclosure. But for my basketball ritual I felt as if it was not well incorporated. As though I had just attached it to the site even though it conflicted with the existing joint design. In order to rectify it below you see the next step of my process in which I recreated the shape and concept of the basketbal ritual site whie using dovetail joints to create the structure.

Here are some interior perspectives of my ritual spaces within the site. To the left is a side view of the basketball site with a silhouette figure for scale.

To the right is a direct view at the basketball court ritual space. One is able to see how the wall connnects with the angled wall and how high the ceiling is compared to the scale silhouette figure.

To the left is my sitting ritual space as seen from the side. the silhouette figure is sitting up straight in the 2nd from the right resting position.

To the left is a perspective view of my sitting ritual space. IT has two silhouette figures for scale. One is in the laying down position and the other is in the sitting while working at a desk position.

To the right is an interior perspective showing the bleacher sitting space that was create by folding over a plane on some shelving. This creates a seating and storage space.

Lastly there is an interior perspective of the warm up space that is connected to the basketball court . ITt filters light through the bars on the side and is directly under the terrace.

Through the above diagram and perspective drawings one is able to see how the sun interacts with the enclosure in my site. Here you can see perspectives at 4:30 PM and 9 AM. The positioning of the model is very speecific. I did not want the basketball court facing any direction in which the sun would be directly in the players eyes because that would be bad design. I also did not want someone who was in the resting ritual to have the sun direcly in their face either.

PASSAGE

________________________

The final phase of this semester’s project is meant to create spaces that are part of the site in which one can pass through and travel from one part of the space to another. Using stairs, platforms, and thresholds of one’s own design a uniquely built space complete with connections all over the site is created.

To the left is shown details about the different types of stairs which I included in my site and someof the different types of platforms which I included in my site. All of the stairs and platforms are of my own design and I wanted to make sure that stayed true to what the siute is all about so I made sure that to create them I simply extruded elements in the site to get the desired stair/platform. The first stair are the stairs that are leading to the two enclosed rooms shown in the final renditions of my site. The second stair type is the stair that leads to the warm up/excercise area where one would work out before going to the basketball ritua space. The last stair type is the stairs on the bleachers and the stairs leading to the terrace. The terrace is a combination of the platforms 2 and 3. The first platform is the platform that stair 1 leads to in order for one to have a room that is enclosed. The stair two has a platform incorporated into it’s structure.

STAIR CALLOUTS In these drawings and diagrams I highlighted the places in which the stairs interacted with the site and if they had multiple parts I showed how those parts interacted with each other and come together to form the stairs. For example in stair 2 I showed how the pegs penetrate the platorms in a mortis joint to create stairs and a platform. Those pegs then slide through spots in the terrace to lock them in. These diagrams show where my stairs are and how they are a part of the site.

SECTIONS The sections that I chose to show are exemplifying the internals of the site and give the viewer an idea of what the scale is to a normal human being. In the left section one is able to see the rooms that were added to the site and the how the stairs play into that, whie simultaneously understandign the terrace, basketball caourt, and beacher heights. In the front section we get a good look at the warm-up area and internal systems of the courtfrom a different angle. The back section creates a view in which one can put themselves into the space of the 2nd floor platform for the rooms and envision themselves in the space. The silhouettes help with that process.

SYSTEMS DIAGRAMS These final perspective views show how all of the pieces of the structure fit into each other and come together to form the final site. They are all highlighted in different shades so that one could easily differentiate between all of the different elements of the site. How the thick structural pieces are holding up the site and allowing for the planar pieces to come together to form the shape of the site and puts a bit of “skin and meat” so to speak on the skeleton structure of the site. Then finally we see how the tertiary elements of the site play into the site allowing for the final details of the site to take shape giving seating, storage, laying down, sleeping, leaning back and etc. It all comes together to form the overall site and here it’s presented from two different angles.
