WESLEY WALES «WES» ANDERSON an American film director, screenwriter, actor, and producer of features, short films and commercials. His films employ similar aesthetics, using a deliberate, methodical cinematography, with mostly primary colors. Anderson's films combine dry humor with poignant portrayals of flawed characters – often a mix of the wealthy and the working class. He is also known for working with many of the same actors and crew on varying projects.

The Darjeeling Limited includes many of Anderson's signature themes and styles, such as despair, abandonment, sibling relationshi ps, a privileged class who rarely work, and timeless fashions and props. Anderson has revealed that The River by Jean Renoir, the films of Satyajit Ray and documentaries on India by Louis Malle were his inspirations for this movie.
Satyajit Ray (1921–—–-1992) was an Indian filmmaker. He is regarded as one of the few great masters of world cinema. Ray was born in the city of Calcutta into a Bengali family prominent in the world of arts and literature. Starting his career as a commercial artist, Ray was drawn into independent filmmaking after meeting French filmmaker Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's Italian neorealist film Bicycle Thieves during a visit to London.

Seu Jorge's character's name, Pel dos Santos, comes from famous footballer Pel and the only club he played for in his home country of Brazil, Santos. Seu Jorge translated the David Bowie songs into Portuguese and arranged them for guitar himself.
