Language learning- individual words vs sentences? u/Ilovenut What's your experience learning sentences vs individual words with Anki? Some people swear learning full sentences is the best method but I'm not so sure. Out of context of the sentence the words will be harder to recall and it takes alot of effort to memorise the arrangement of something that you will probably never see, hear or use again.

Sentences also serve as templates for other sentences. In English, if you can say, "I love clowns", you can say that you love anything else... just plug in a new noun. The sentence serves a a model for correct grammar. Ditto for longer sentences with more complex grammar structures. Sure, sentences may not focus much on any word in isolation; that's what single-word cards are for. But just because a screwdriver doesn't drive in a nail, it doesn't follow that you shouldn't have one in your toolbox. The effort you put into learning a sentence teaches you not just words, but grammar patterns too; something single-word cards suck at. Of course, explicitly learning grammar is a good idea too. It's probably better to have a concrete example or a template to go along with it.

thanks for the input. I'm finding sentences very time consuming, I definitely need to start using shorter ones, Any tips for learning new words n sentences with anki? Just keep hitting again until it sticks? or actually stop on new words and spend a few mintues atleast trying to commit it to memory then hit again.

Yeah, keep them very short and basic or they become too difficult very quickly - just phrases is fine. Also, I recommend cloze deletion cards. They don’t have the cognitive load of trying to remember a whole sentence but you get to see sentences/context with every card.

I'm those who swear by sentence cards. I've tried drilling 2000 vocabulary cards. Turned out to be the biggest waste of my time. Sure I can recall those individual words but... That's it. I couldn't form sentences nor could I speak. Switched to sentence cards and I'm far better off. There are words like a special dish is better with a picture and a vocabulary card.
