Editor’s Note What a whirlwind of activity we are experiencing! We are always busy, but recently with our Artown event in July (follow up page 14) and the number of debut authors we are preparing to release before the end of the year, we have been burning the midnight oil more than once lately. We wouldn't have it any other way., of course This month, with Hot August Nights (page 4) starting off the month, we dedicated this issue to cars, cars, cars. My co-host, Dennis Duperault will enjoy this, being the car fan he is. We’ve even included his book, Auto Emotions 101 (page 8). Don’t miss Dennis Romeo’s article about his Cobra (page 3) which is also shown on our front page with two beautiful ladies, Shari Floyd and Debbie McCarthy. We have included a couple of tidbits of news about GreenTech Automotive and Henry Ford’s 150th birthday! (both on page 5) We managed to keep the car theme in music, sharing some favorite car songs (page 10) and Ron Howard’s movie RUSH coming to theaters in September. (page 15). Next month, we will be talking about banned books. It has always seemed so strange to me that we still ban books...what about that First Amendment again? (Check out our July issue if you want to read it for yourself).

COBRA By Dennis Romeo

A

s I write this I’m looking at the calendar and realize that Hot August Nights is just 2 weeks away. I just spent an hour and a half detailing under the hood of my Cobra and I’m wondering how many people realize just what a Cobra is. Almost all of the Cobras you see today are replicas or continuation cars of the original design. True Shelby Cobras sell in the $1000,000.00 plus ranges. Even the Cobras sold by Shelby Motor Cars are continuation Cobras and are brand new. AC Cars had been using the Bristol straight-6 engine in its AC Ace two-seater roadster. This had a hand-built body with a steel tube frame and aluminum body panels that were made using English wheeling machines. The engine was a pre-World War ll design. Bristol decided in 1961 to cease production of its engine

and instead to use Chrysler 331 cu in (5.4 L) V8 engines. AC started using the 2.6-liter Ford Zephyr engine in its cars. In September, 1961, Shelby airmailed AC a letter asking them if they would build him a car modified to accept a V8 engine. AC agreed, provided a suitable engine could be found. He first went to Chevrolet to see if they would provide him with engines, but not wanting to add competition to the Corvette they said no. Ford wanted a car that could compete with the Corvette and they happened to have a brand new thin wall small block engine which could be used in this endeavor. It was Ford’s 260 HiPo engine, a new lightweight thin wall cast small block V8 tuned for high performance. In January, 1962 mechanics at AC Cars fitted the prototype chassis CSX0001 with a 260 ci Ford V8. After testing and modification, the engine and transmission were removed and the chassis was air freighted to Shelby in Los Angeles on February 2, 1962. His team fitted it with an engine and transmission in less than eight hours at Dean Moon’s Shop in Santa Fe Springs, 3

It’s about cars! California and began road testing. Production proved to be easy, including the rework of the AC Ace’s front end. The most important modification was the fitting of a stronger rear differential to handle the increased engine power. A Salisbury 4 HU unit was chosen instead of the old ENV unit. It was the same unit used on the Jaguar E-Type. On the production version the inboard brakes were moved outboard to reduce cost. Shelby wanted the AC Cobra’s to be “CorvetteBeaters” and at nearly 500 lbs less than the Chevrolet Corvette, the lightweight roadster accomplished that goal at Riverside International Raceway on February 2, 1963. Driver Dave MacDonald piloted CSX2026 past a field of Corvettes, Jaguars, Porsches and recorded the Cobra’s historic first ever victory. Later, Shelby offered a drag package known as the Dragonsnake, which won several NHRA National events. The rest is history. uly 30, 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of Henry Ford’s birth. A year long celebration is planned beginning with a “special proclamation by the state of Michigan” declaring his birthday “Henry Ford Day”. In a statement from the Ford corporate website, events will continue throughout the year in the United States, Europe and South America. Like many businesses, “Henry Ford initially struggled to get Ford Motor Company on solid financial footing, but broke through with the Model T.” Ford Motor Company was formed in June, 1903. It was only a month later when the first car was assembled in Detroit. For more information about the celebration and to learn more about Henry Ford’s life, go to http://mediaford.com. Our Aging Population By Ken Roberts

O

ne really interesting f a c t a b o u t demographics today is the aging of our population. People are living longer than ever and are living healthier. The US department of Health and Human Services tells us that persons aged 65 or over totaled 39.6 million in 2009 which accounted for 12.9% of the American population. That number is forecast to grow to 72.1 million by 2030 which should be about 19% of the population. The number of people worldwide over the age of 80 is projected to quadruple from the year 2000 to the year 2050 hitting 395 million. This aging of the population has some important implications for investors. One is that planning for retirement is more important than ever. By 2040 the average life expectancy for men will be 86 and for women it will go up to 91.5 years of age. People today need to plan for a much longer time in retirement than individuals just a few years ago. When the average life expectancy was 72 for men and most of them retired at 65 they only needed to plan for seven years or so of retirement. By 2040 a male retiring at age 65 will need funds for about 31 years of retirement. A thirty year plus retirement is much more difficult to plan for than a seven year retirement. For women the planning need is even greater. Women tend to live longer, earn less money than their male counter parts 6

and most women will live spend about five to seven years in widowhood. One reason women earn less is because they take years out of the workforce to raise children. Many women also leave the investing and long term financial planning to their husbands which makes it more difficult for them to make important decisions later in life when they have to manage their portfolios by themselves. Another interesting aspect is to look at some areas where baby boomers will be spending their money. The market research firm Global Industry Analysts projects that a boomer-fueled consumer base, "seeking to keep the dreaded signs of aging at bay," will push the U.S. market for anti-aging products from about $80 billion now to more than $114 billion by 2015. Globally anti-aging products are projected to become a $400 billion per year marketplace. One way to play the spending trend by baby boomers on anti-aging is by investing in big name pharmaceutical companies. While these companies don’t focus on anti-aging the amount of money spent on pharmaceutical drugs should increase also and they may venture into the anti-aging area. The mega cap stocks like Merck and Pfizer are well established companies with attractive dividends yields in today’s low interest rate environment. The thirty year US Treasury bond currently yields about 3.6% Merck’s current dividend yield is also about 3.6% and Pfizer’s is over 3.25%. Companies like Nu Skin Enterprises have performed very well and have grown their sales revenue year after year. Nu Skin is a company that develops and distributes personal care products and nutritional

Have You Heard? products including anti-aging remedies. USANA Health Sciences is a $ 1 billion company that has had a growing revenue stream for the last five years and also is in the business of making nutritional, weight management and anti-aging products. One thing for sure is that the aging population will continue to grow and the boomers will keep spending money on plastic surgery, botox injections, human growth hormone treatments and a multitude of personal care, nutritional and anti-aging products. y grown kids and their friends are all tattooed . Most of them have at least one tattoo they want removed. They asked me, an RN, about it and as I researched the topic, I became more and more interested until I took the plunge and set up my own laser shop. It’s an interesting business; we see tattoos on people from all walks of life and everyone has a story behind it. We work closely with many local tattoo artists to fade tattoos for cover-up work. We also see a lot of amateur tattoos—they are the easiest to remove. People have lots of questions about the process. We have a frequently asked questions (FAQ) page on our website at inkplanb.com.

Kempler Design sells and installs blinds shades, and shutters, but it's the drapery work that makes us special. Early on we discovered in order to have an edge over our competition we needed to offer more personalized design services. That’s when we stepped into the wonderful world of draperies. This is where we express our ability to create a design that is personalized to our client’s tastes and needs. An old catch phrase we are re-introducing is: “Blinds make it shelter; we make it home!” After functional window coverings are selected, many people like to dress up their windows. The Executive Center: A Professional Business Center

A

t the Berlin Auto Show in 1938, Adolf Hitler presented the prototype for a small, oddly shaped, inexpensive family car that all good Aryans could enjoy. Decades later, that automobile-the Volkswagen Beetle-was one of the most beloved in the world. Bernhard Rieger examines culture and technology, politics and economics, and industrial design and advertising genius to reveal how a car commissioned by Hitler and designed by Ferdinand Porsche became an exceptional global commodity on a par with Coca-Cola. The Beetle's improbable story as a failed prestige project of the Third Reich which became a world-renowned brand illuminates the multiple origins, creative adaptations, and persisting inequalities. Songs About Cars: You’ve Loved Them for Years By Janice Hermsen

ith this issue being dedicated to cars, we wanted to share some of the best “car songs” we could find. Digital Trends at http://www.digitaltrends.com/cars/ best-songs-about-cars/ By Amir Iliaifar, beat us to it with their “25 Best Songs About Cars and Driving”. We all know Don McClean with his famous “American Pie”. My kids, when they were young, and I couldn’t resist singing along to

Music “drove your Chevy to the levy, but the levy was dry”. Or going back to The Beatles and “Drive My Car”. Of course, The Beach Boys and their “Little Deuce Coupe” was always one of my favorites, but one mentioned in the article that I had forgotten was Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz”. If you get a chance, read the full article. Amir Iliaifar did a great job choosing artists and songs. One last comment, I have to mention the band, The Cars, who sang “Drive”. Even though it isn’t about a specific car, considering their name and their top standings in the ‘70s & ‘80s and the fact that I love the song, why not? What’s your favorite “car song”?

Have You Heard? How to Use Backlinks to Increase Search Engine Ranking by Gene Cartwright

B

acklinks are incoming links to a website or web page from another website. Backlinks are often a heavy indicator of the popularity of that page, and are one of the most important factors in determining where that page will rank on the search engine.

Think of the World Wide Web as a super highway. Backlinks are equivalent to the many roads on that super highway leading to a certain destination. In order to get as many visitors as possible to that destination, there should be several ways to travel to it. There is no difference when it comes to websites or web pages. The more paths there are available that lead to that website or web page will likely increase the amount of visitors that will reach it. Backlinks are an important aspect of any marketing effort. You want people to find your website or web page, after all, this is why you created it in the first place. Therefore, you need to create several ways for people to find it. The search engines love this. When the search engines see the link on someone else's site or elsewhere, they send the spiders or web crawlers over to your site and index your site. This means that your site gets placed on a search engine automatically rather than you entering it yourself, which is actually the way the search engines prefer it. Remember, the number of quality backlinks to a website or web page is one of the most important factors that determine its rank on the search engine. So, what does "quality backlinks" mean? There are several factors that determine the value of a backlink. Backlinks placed on authoritative websites are very valuable. If both sites (your page and the site where you are placing the backlink) have the same keyword topics, the backlink is considered valuable and relevant and has a strong influence on the search engine ranking. Another factor that constitutes a valuable, quality backlink is the "anchor text." Anchor text is simply the descriptive labeling of the hyperlink as it appears on the webpage. It is important that relevant keywords are used in the anchor text of the hyperlink because the search engines examine the anchor text to see how relevant it is to the content on the webpage the backlink is being added to. Now that you have an understanding of what backlinks are and how they are used, continue reading to 12

learn how to create and use backlinks to increase your search engine ranking. Remember, the higher your page ranks with the search engines, the better chance web surfers will land on YOUR page. Instructions: 1. The first question that probably comes to mind is where you should put backlinks. You can put backlinks in any number of locations, such as article directories, social bookmarking sites, on blogs, submit them to multiple search engines, as well as putting them in signatures in forums. The possibilities can be pleasantly exhausting, but this article will concentrate on the more popular, well-known backlinking methods.

 2. If you are promoting an article, submit your article to one or more of the many article directories available. Some of the more popular article directories include ezinearticles.com, articlesfactory.com, and goarticles.com, and affsphere.com. There are many other article directories available and these can be found by visiting www.directorycritic.com/. There are also services that will submit your article to multiple article directories for a fee. One of those pay services is http:// www.articlepostrobot.com/. Another is www.submitsuite.com. You will find links to all of the above referenced services in the Resources section of this article.
 3. Another way to create quality backlinks is to submit your site or article to the many Social Bookmarking sites. The top 20 social bookmarking sites currently include:
digg.com,
Yahoo! Buzz, StumbleUpon.com,
reddit.com,
 Technorati.com,
del.icio.us,
kaboodle.com,
mixx.com, Propeller.com,
newsvine.com,
Fark.com,
Slashdot.org,
 twine.com,
clipmarks.com,
dzone.com,
faves.com,
 blinklist.com,
diigo.com,
simpy.com,
BlogMarks.net.
Submitting to all of these top social bookmarking sites can be very time consuming, but well worth the effort. I have found an excellent way to automatically submit my web pages to 28 social bookmarking sites with the click of a button. OnlyWire is the fastest, easiest way to submit web content to all your social bookmarking sites automatically. There is a small monthly fee of $2.99 for this autosubmission service, but the massive amount of traffic it can drive to your site is well worth less than a penny a day. You can link directly to OnlyWire.com through the Resources section of this article.

 4. Posting to a blog that is about a similar topic is another way to create backlink. You first read the blog and then post a legitimate, insightful comment. After you are finished with your post, put a link back to the site you want Continued on page 14

Reprinted with permission from IFOGO Village Gene Cartwright, a native of Texas, was born in Baytown, a small, Gulf Coast town 20 miles east of Houston. He often says it was his great fortune to be born at the right address— the home of Elmer and Marie Cartwright—his parents. Gene is the eldest son and second of eight children. He insists his love of writing and learning was sparked by his mother, who taught him to read when he was barely four. He is the author of a number of books including, I Never Played Catch with My Father, A Quiet Kill, The Widowmaker and Pulitzer nominated, A Family Gathering, to name just a few.

Art LeRue Press (LRP) Artists and Authors with Attitude Is a Success By Janice Hermsen

I

n 2012, LeRue Press had its first Artown Event. We had a good crowd, lots of authors and some great artists that chose to display their work in our warehouse. It gave us our first taste of doing an Artown event and by doing it in our own shop, it gave people a chance to get to know us, learn what we do and FIND US (sometimes people think we’re in Sparks...not so much– we’re actually across from the Grand Sierra Resort driving range). In 2013, we decided to do the same thing. This time though, we moved the artists to the front of the shop, right when you walk in the door. It was a small grouping (our front is not huge) but the display went well and sales were good too! It was not a sell out but a good variety of selections were sold. Our main section of the shop is now all books (over 4,000, many varieties) and we had authors signing and selling their books too. We had a fundraiser for Gage Bunsness, who has Type I diabetes (our father had the same type) and he raised a fair amount of money (but we are still collecting if you feel the need to donate). Hope to see you next year!

he epic action-drama stars Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers) as the charismatic Englishman James Hunt and Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) as the disciplined Austrian perfectionist Niki Lauda, whose clashes on the Grand Prix racetrack epitomized the contrast between these two extraordinary characters, a distinction reflected in their private lives.*
