H

appy Holidays! We say Merry Christmas in our home and office, but we recognize that not everyone celebrates the same way. We hope whatever holiday you celebrate, you will enjoy it! With that said, we have a number of selections in our holiday issue. LeRue Press, in October, November and December is releasing a number of new titles. It kept us hopping these last few months. Don’t miss our backlist titles too. They are still as good as ever. We want to give thanks this holiday season to our veterans without whom we could not celebrate the freedom of the press and our many other freedoms in our world. We need to do our due diligence to keep those freedoms; Washington and power can get out of hand; it’s up to us, the people, to keep them in check. Off my soapbox now, our 4th Annual Book Blast is November 16th. If you’re reading this after that date, don’t fret, we’ll have another one in 2014 in November. Sean Savoy will be in attendance. He has a great follow up to our September issue about Banned Books Week in this issue (p.4). Ken Roberts always keeps us up to date on the stock market. You can read his column on page 5. Check out the upcoming workshops we’re presenting (p. 19) for consumers (automotive), business (motivational) and authors (all the how to’s you could need to know). Read about books, music, movies, art and more in each issue of The LeRue Review. Till next month...Keep reading and writing!

Celebrating Banned Books Week in September Gatekeepers BeWare, the Closet Doors Are Open

I

By Sean Savoy

n America we celebrate many liberties, among them the freedom to publish. The logical consequence of that right is the freedom to read. It may be a “chicken or egg” dilemma, but whichever way you look at it, one activity should naturally follow the other. Banning books seems like an act for the days of the Spanish Inquisition or for a time when ecclesiastical censors were outlawing works of thinkers like Galileo and Copernicus. As hard as it might be to imagine, the right to read is still being put to the test — and not so infrequently — by those who seek to suppress words, thoughts and ideas that challenge their own. Sometimes censorship is validated by the prevailing political or moral culture, usually when there is great homogeneity within a community, where dissenting voices are not wont to be heard. Other times, a controlling body — in some cases individuals — try to impose conservative or outworn beliefs or ideas upon a greater, transforming 4

population. Within the last few years, popular books such as Harry Potter, Fifty Shades of Grey, And Tango Makes Three (a children’s book based on the true story of two male penguins in New York’s Central Park Zoo who are given an egg to raise) and classics like To Kill A Mockingbird and Catcher in the Rye have been successfully challenged in American communities. According to the Banned Books Week web site (bannedbooksweek.org), which is maintained by the American Library Association (ALA), over 11,000 books have been challenged in the US since 1982, the year Banned Books Week was inaugurated. It is important to note that that number represents only the challenges that have been reported. The campaign was founded by activist Judith Krug in response to the sudden rise in challenges to books that year. It is now supported by the ALA as well as the American Booksellers Association, American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, American Society of Journalists and Authors, Association of American Publishers, and National Association of College Stores, and is endorsed by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress. We celebrated the 31st anniversary of Banned Books Week in Reno with the 4th Annual Northern Nevada Banned Books Week celebration, which was held on

Have You Heard? September 22, 2013 at the Grassroots Books store located at 660 E. Grove St. The event was sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada, Washoe County Library System, University of Nevada-Reno Writing Center; and Grassroots Books. For the second year in a row, I was honored to have been asked to participate in the event as an official community reader. Being an advocate of freedom of expression and the right to seek knowledge and information, I happily accepted. Each of the invited readers was asked to select one or more challenged books and then to pick passages for reading aloud to the community. My selections focused on stories about homosexuality, particularly as they have been adapted to film. Needless to say, the subject has been the topic of much controversy over time as it has been written about in books and portrayed in cinema. Vito Russo’s groundbreaking 1981 book, The Celluloid Closet, openly discussed, perhaps for the first time in a truly impacting way, the concerted effort in Hollywood to stave off the depiction of homosexuality and brought attention, as Russo put it, to the reality that as the matter became unavoidable to address, how such behavior was reflected mockingly, disdainfully and disrespectfully. As a follow-up to my introduction by Russo, I elected to read from two works of fiction that addressed homosexual relationships, inspiring later cinematic interpretations. The first book, The Well of Lonliness, a novel written in 1928 by British author Radclyffe Hall, was not in fact adapted to film per se, but was the inspiration for movies that sought to benefit from its controversial subject matter of a lesbian relationship, compelling one journalist to write, "I would rather give a healthy boy or a healthy girl a phial of prussic acid than this novel.” It seemed fitting to conclude my presentation with excerpts from one of the most famous and arguably culture shifting films on the subject — 2005's heart wrenching Brokeback Mountain, which was adapted to the screen from the 1997 short story of the same name by Annie Prouix. The powerful story, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger onscreen, treats openly of the passionate and secret love affair between a rodeo cowboy and a Wyoming ranch hand. As an example of the backlash against the material, conservative radio personality Rush Limbaugh openly referred to the film as "Bareback Mountain" and "Humpback Mountain,” and Don Imus labeled the film “Fudgepack Mountain.” Continued on page 6

Changes to the Dow By Ken Roberts

T

he Dow Jones Industrial Average consists of thirty of the most dominant companies in America and is the oldest and most widely quoted stock index. After the close of trading on September 20th, there were some significant changes made to the Dow lineup. Alcoa, HewlettPackard and the Bank of America got deleted from the Dow and Visa, Nike and Goldman Sachs were added. Alcoa has been a part of the average for 54 years now. Changes to the Dow are fairly common; in 2009 Citigroup was replaced by Travelers Insurance and Cisco was added in place of General Motors. In 2008 Kraft Foods replaced AIG. The Dow was originally calculated in 1896 and was invented by Charles Dow. Initially the average was calculated as an arithmetic average, where you simply added the prices of the thirty stocks, then divided them by thirty to obtain an average price. Since 1896, the divisor has been continually adjusted lower to account for stock splits and spin offs. Today the divisor is so low it acts as a multiplier, the number has been adjusted down to about 0.13 from the original 30. The Dow isn’t really an industrial average anymore, either. Today’s Dow consists of technology stocks like Cisco, Intel and IBM, energy stocks like Chevron and Exxon-Mobil, pharmaceutical stocks like Merck, Pfizer and Johnson and Johnson and financial stocks like American Express, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Travelers. Conglomerate General Electric is the oldest member of the Dow having been part of the index for over a hundred years, since 1907. The Dow needs to be changed periodically to keep up with the changes in our ever evolving economy, so that the average represents America’s leading corporations. The Dow is a price weighted index which means that the stocks in the index are weighted according to their share price. Conversely, the S&P 500 index is a capitalization weighted index which means that the companies in the S&P 500 are weighted according to their market cap, so the larger the company is, the more representation it will have in the index. Market cap is defined as the number of outstanding shares of stock times the stock price. Large companies like Apple and Exxon-Mobil will have more representation in an index like the S&P 500. The S&P 500 consists of 500 of the largest companies in America, so it is much broader based than the Dow. The main driver of stock prices is corporate earnings. It’s hard to say when earnings season will start this quarter. Traditionally, Alcoa kicks off the corporate earnings season. Continued on page 6

Have You Heard? Continued from page 5-Gatekeepers

My invitation letter from the organizers of the Northern Nevada Banned Books Week event stated: “It is an opportunity for the community to focus on the importance of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms that censorship through attempted banning of books can bring.” I cannot think of a more powerful way to draw attention to the problem than to openly and vocally utter the words of those who have challenged, perhaps even unwittingly, the status quo for freedom’s sake. In trying to gain support for the Revolutionary War, Patrick Henry legendarily exclaimed: “Give me liberty or give me death!” In the case of Banned Books Week, the call may not be to arms but to awareness. It is by our liberty that we are free to read, so let us celebrate books in all their variety and, most of all, honor the history of our nation as a land of opportunity and free expression. Continued from page 5-Changes to the Dow

This quarter, Alcoa reported on October 8th. Nike reported their first quarter earnings on the 27th of September and had a strong report, earning 86 cents per share on revenues of $6.97 billion. I’m not sure if Nike’s report will unofficially kick off earnings season, now that it’s a Dow component and Alcoa is out, but if so, they did open with a nice, solid report. You may wonder why Nike is reporting first quarter earnings when we’re heading into the third quarter earnings season and that is because they operate on a different fiscal year. Even though Nike has just reported its first quarter’s earnings, the indexes will consider them to be third quarter for the purpose of calculating the average earnings for the index. The first of the Dow companies to report actual third quarter earnings will be JP Morgan on the 11th of October, maybe JP Morgan should be considered the first company to report, now that Alcoa is out of the Dow. Companies release their earnings on a quarterly basis, and these reports are closely scrutinized by stock market participants for signs of growth. Lately though the economy has been in a slow growth mode, the stock market has performed well. Year to date the S&P 500 is up over 18%. Last quarter, earnings for the companies that make up the S&P 500 grew by about 2.5%, revenues grew by 1.9%. Banks and other financial stocks accounted for most of the earnings growth in the second quarter and other sectors of the economy were basically flat. The earnings forecasts for this quarter have been lowering virtually every month. Right now the earnings forecast is saying that we’ll see a growth rate of about 1.2%, which isn’t real strong. That number has been revised downward from a rate of 7.0% back in February. It will be interesting to see how the reports come out this quarter and what company will get the honor of unofficially kicking off earnings season going forward. Awakenings From Then ‘til Now By Sharla Shults

$18.99 Paperback

Review by Anna Whitney

S

harla Shults surprised me with her ability to take history and blend it into her poetry. When I first saw her book, I really thought it would be just like most poetry books I’ve seen on the shelf. Ok, but not something I would really enjoy reading. I don’t read a lot of poetry but I was asked to take a look at this book because it was different. Open her book to any page and it’s like a chapter out of history but told in a manner that is fun and interesting to just about anyone. Like, “The Stagecoach Robbery” or “Whisperings from the Past” that take you back in time. Through her descriptions, which are more like short stories, you feel like you’re there. Just when you think it’s all about history, Sharla surprises you again as she brings you to the present and reaches for the future. One reviewer said that “Not only will readers instantly fall in love with her poetry, but also with history.” I couldn’t agree more. I’m not a huge fan of history either, but Shults may soon make me a fan. There’s room for jotting down your own thoughts within the book too. A nice touch. If I were to give this book a star rating, I would give it a 4-1/2 stars...only because, there is always room for improvement in life! I think Sharla, who comes from an education background, will understand! Great book. Pick it up if you have a chance. You can read it in snippets and still enjoy the entire book.

Book s & Authors: Proof of Heaven By Eben Alexander, M.D.

Online-varied prices Review by Debbie George

The Executive Center: A Professional Business Center

I

f you have ever encountered death personally, you might find yourself comparing your experience to that of Dr. Alexander. Whether you believe his story or not, it is an incredible tale of survival. As a scientist, Eben Alexander is faced with the recognition that there is life after death. A fact that he and fellow scientists have argued is impossible, until he was in a coma for seven days and he takes a journey he would have said was impossible. A near death experience is described as an “experience involving a vision, as of the afterlife, reported by a resuscitated person,” as defined by thefreedictionary.com. For Eben Alexander, reconciling his scientific proof with his real life experience was not easy but the outcome is, to him, proof that death is not the end. I agree with others that have written about Proof of Heaven. It is a remarkable story that you cannot ignore, provides a unique perspective from a scientist that believed a near death experience was nothing more than a braininduced illusion and the depicts a journey the author took during his coma as well as afterword to come to new conclusions and beliefs. It’s worth the read no matter what your belief system is.

Chasing Gas Hills Yellowcake By Charles “Don” Snow

$39.95 Paperback $79.95 Hard Cover Review by the McNeice Family

C

hasing Gas Hills Yellowcake is so well done and captures a time in history that needed to be told. All involved in the creation of the Lucky Mac were truly a once in a lifetime team. It is clear from your recounting of this time what a great group of people that came together and put their hearts and souls into the project! Set aside today’s red tape to get even a core drill sample, the elements, dedication, innovations and pure heart would never be duplicated today. All should be so proud to tell the story of what they accomplished during this historical time. All of you deserve to be reminded in the history of mining. In reading the book, the research and attention to so many details was fabulous. We know that Neil Sr. would be grateful. A very humble and quiet man, he would love your book. “Thank You” on behalf of the McNeice family. Your book has been a wonderful gift to his children. They can finally read the history that their grandfather was so deeply involved in. Neil Sr. didn’t discuss it much; he was always busy with Mining endeavors in Arizona and McNeice Stone Works. Editor’s note: Chasing Gas Hills Yellowcake is about the early years of development of the uranium industry in the Gas Hills of Wyoming. A combination of history and personal recollection provide an insight to what happened in the early years of uranium discovery. Prospector Neil E. McNeice (Neil Sr.) is a central focus in Chasing Gas Hills Yellowcake.

Up the Chain U.S. TOUR AND NATIONWIDE TRIPLE A RADIO CAMPAIGN STARTED IN OCTOBER

P

HILADELPHIA (Sept. 20, 2013) – A whole new type of “Philly Soul” is poised for discovery on Seeds and Thorns. The second studio album from Philly folk artist UP THE CHAIN is an intimately rich and intensely personal work that comes from deep within the soul of Reed Kendall and his current collective of some of Philly’s finest musicians. Produced by Bill Moriarty (Dr. Dog, Man Man, Toy Soldiers) and due for Oct. 15 release, Seeds and Thorns already is being heard in the band’s hometown on Triple A tastemaker WXPN, which also supported UP THE CHAIN’s 2011 fulllength debut, their previous studio effort, and called Kendall on its blog, The Key, “[one of] Philly’s most creative singer-songwriters” and the band “part of Philly’s new folk explosion.” A nationwide radio

20

Music campaign and U.S. tour begins in October, starting in the Northeast and continuing into the Midwest and South, following a tour warm-up opening for 10,000 Maniacs at the FAF festival. UP THE CHAIN has built a strong reputation as a live performing act, reinforced to another festival audience in late summer when they won over the crowd at the historic Philadelphia Folk Festival. The tour includes a live studio Daytrotter Session on Nov.. 7 from Rock Island, IL (streaming at www.daytrotter.com), and a live radio performance on the WDVX Blue Plate Special in Knoxville, TN (Nov. 12). Among other tour highlights, UP THE CHAIN will play two clubs in one night in Burlington Vt. (Oct. 5), and back-toback nights at two different clubs in South Bend, IN (Nov. 8-9). And in an unusual twist, the band will be releasing a different video of a song from Seeds and Thorns on its Facebook page every week leading up to their Philadelphia hometown CD Release Party, Nov. 1 at the Ardmore Music Hall in the town where Kendall grew up, Ardmore, PA. Seeds and Thorns is decidedly more sparse than its predecessor, but the new album’s beautiful allure is powerfully enhanced by the way Moriarty colors Kendall’s vocals with carefully nuanced piano, trumpets, strings and big harmonies from top Philly “players” Anam OwiliEger (keys, vocals), Avery Coffee (electric guitar), Matt Scarano (drums) and Matt Wong (bass). A

subtle Americana vibe emphasizes roots over twang. Kendall tackles his “potential vs. struggle” (seeds vs. thorns) thread with direct hits in lyrics that question motives in his quest for inner peace. There are rails against complacency, pseudo-‘70s singer-songwriter style (the upbeat “Seasick Sailors”); self-confrontations of inner restlessness (the piano-driven “Same Story”); arguments for staying grounded (“The Horse’s Course” and ultimately, self-discovery of lost faith from a painful breakup (“For to Give Away”). UP THE CHAIN navigates these intricate songs while Kendall draws his inspiration from musical heroes such as Conor Oberst, Neil Young, Ryan Adams, Amos Lee, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Paul Simon. In fact, Kendall utilizes UP THE CHAIN as his recording and performing “vessel” much like Oberst did originally with Bright Eyes. Kendall takes exceptional pride when told the songs he writes are both energetic and laid back, or “catchy yet substantive.” Such is the healthy dichotomy that is UP THE CHAIN and its Continued on page 26

MARCUS GOLDHABERNew Patriotic Standard COME HOME AMERICA Aims to Ignite Movement to Serve Military as They Serve Our Nation

Acclaimed New York Singer-Songwriter MARCUS GOLDHABER Launches ‘Home for the Holidays’ Season for the Troops with Veterans Day Charity Release Proceeds from Song, Concert Tour and Upcoming Album to Benefit Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA)

I

nfluenced and inspired throughout his career by the Great American Songbook, Marcus Goldhaber has turned to America’s military heroes for his patriotic composition, “Come Home America.” In a bold departure from the jazz-pop stylings that have earned the New York artist high praise from People Magazine to JazzTimes, “Come Home America” is a reflection of his respect and admiration for those who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces. It follows Goldhaber’s acclaimed third album, Almost Love, as a spirited ode to U.S. troops around the world, not bound by musical genre. Produced in Nashville by Cliff Goldmacher (Ke$ha) with the intimate and accessible approach that is Goldhaber’s signature, “Come Home America” is the Buffalo native’s impassioned call to reunite the troops with their families after more than a decade of war, picking up where George McGovern’s 1972 Presidential nomination acceptance speech of the same name left off. Four decades later, “Come Home America” aims to improve and strengthen the dialogue between civilians and military families for years to come, while honoring and empowering injured service members. “Come Home America” originally appeared last fall on

22

the Project Eleven charity compilation, and the reaction moved Goldhaber to create this entirely new recording. Released and celebrated on Veterans Day 2013 with a live performance in the New York City Veterans Day Parade, “Come Home America” is not just a song but a movement, with Goldhaber and the Come Home America Band mounting a yearlong tour whichwill bring the music to concert halls and stadiums as well as military bases and parades around the world. Goldhaber regularly entertains at Manhattan’s top Jazz/Cabaret venues (including Birdland, The Kitano, Iridium) and has performed for members of the UN and former Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger. “Our soldiers signed up for a broad mission – to serve and protect the United States of America,” says Goldhaber. “But they do not decide how their skills and abilities are to be utilized or how their energy, strength, endurance and their human capacity are nurtured. It feels as though our troops have been exhausted over the past decade and it is time for them to come home.“ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ COME HOME AMERICA on the Web: www.comehomeamericatour.com www..facebook.com/comehomeamericatour www.twitter.com/comehomeamericatour www.youtube.com/comehomeamericatour For more information, contact Randy Alexander, www.randexpr.com

Captain Phillips

R

Motion Picture Rating (MPAA) Rated PG-13 for disturbing war images, thematic elements and smoking

ave reviews are coming in for “Captain Phillips”. But the New York Post, in an article in October, claims the crew says it’s all a lie. No matter where you stand on the facts, it sounds like Captain Phillips is a movie worth watching and Tom Hanks provides a stellar performance as usual. We have not had a chance to see the flick yet, but put it in our list of must dos. Check out your local theaters for current times. ell, it’s here. Are you hanging on to your nuggets? Not sure what it all means and I guess vegetarians will love this one since they are trying to change history and get rid of turkey for Thanksgiving. The critics say this is a so-so movie according to Fandango, but the general consensus seems to favor it as a light-hearted, funny movie for kids. Seems the older kids get the concept but it’s lost on the younger ones. With Woody Harrelson and Owen Wilson in the voice cast, it should be entertaining.
