Brian T. Shirley The other morning, my agent from Red Willow Talent sent me a text asking "Can you send a couple of voice overs of you doing an auc oneer?" Well, I have played with it a li le in my show here and there during this one bit that I do, but that's about it. I told her I would get here one in a few hours. One thing I have learned is to say "Yes" to things, even if it's scary, if it can help you out. I spent a few hours watching You Tube videos on how to do the chant, how to do the filler, learning the numbers and it was very hard to begin with. I knew I needed to get this down quickly, so I prac ced as much as possible and got it to a point where I was comfortable to record it. I don't think I'll win a compe on, and I don't know if I'll get the part, but I will use it for a small part of my show and it will make a difference. I really felt I had accomplished something and will keep prac cing because now I can't wait to bring it into my show. Also, not only did I find a new talent, I learned to keep on learning. Expanding your talents, as I've wri en in the past, can never be driven home enough and some mes I need to be reminded of it. You have to

Keep Learning first say "Yes" then dive head first into new territory to see what you can do. The small victories can add up to a bigger one, but you have to have the small one's first. They're important because they keep you going!

Tropic of Cancer

by Henry Miller I first stumbled across the name of Henry Miller, the liber ne, while reading a book about Thomas Merton, the monk. Some comparison was made between the two writers, and since I was already an admirer of Merton, I became curious about Miller. This occurred while I was in the Navy, serving on the USS Blue Ridge, which had an excellent library. The first book of Miller’s that I found was actually “Tropic of Capricorn”. Opening it at random, I read some passages that sounded like the sort of bragging I heard from promiscuous sailors ad nauseam. So my interest waned and I returned the book to its shelf. A few years later, a er the Navy, I decided to read “Tropic of Cancer”— considered to be Miller’s most important book. It was published in France in 1934 but was banned from the U.S. un l 1961. However, as we all know, these “scarlet le ers” of the modern variety tend to prompt cheers instead of jeers and Miller was no excep on to the rule. His book is not a novel in the ordinary sense, but more of a fragmented autobiography / literary rant. It is set in Paris (where Miller had exiled himself from the United States) and its primary focus is on the author’s bawdy adventures, with philosophical and ar s c reflec ons woven throughout. His wri ng powers were such that he could ra le on, poe cally and indefinitely, about anything at all.

Book Review

Some mes he would overreach and lapse into dazzling gibberish: e. g., ‘I am the gorilla who feels his wings growing, a giddy gorilla in the center of a sa n‐like emp ness…’ and so on. One minute he sounds like another A la the Hun, aching for conquest and violence; the next he fancies himself a new and improved Jesus. One of the more striking episodes concerns a visit to a Catholic church. Miller is thunderstruck by what he sees and hears: the bowed heads, the murmured prayers, the dim candlelight, the priest in black, the altar boys. Apparently he has never experienced the like before. And while he plays well the role of an innocent savage, his disdain and incomprehension smacks of empty swagger. Throughout the book he is like an inverted Pharisee: a man who puts his badness on display in order to receive applause from others. Sadly, the applause was not and is not in short supply. Certainly one can legi mately call Henry Miller an original talent, but he was not an absolute original (no one is). Before his “Tropic of Cancer” there was Hemingway’s “The Sun Also Rises” and Celine’s “Journey to the End of the Night”. Both of these earlier novels are comparable to Miller’s—and both are be er. Hemingway had a profound sense of biblical vanity. Whether sexual bliss is a ained or thwarted, by the end of “The Sun Also Rises” we are le with nothing but the spiritual barrenness of Continued on page 8

Ecclesiastes (“vanity of vani es, all is vanity”). And yet this is no atheis c vision. God is present in Hemingway’s book, an available hope that is nonetheless missed by his novel’s chief protagonists. Celine’s novel bears an even stronger resemblance to Miller’s, but its overall effect is more sa sfying. If nothing else, “Journey to the End of the Night” is much funnier. Miller’s book could have been just as funny, but he was too preoccupied with playing the Nietzschean overman and hyper‐cri cal messiah. Finally, a note of cau on to unwary readers: “Tropic of Cancer” teems with obsceni es and is more misogynis c than “sexy”. Granted, it might be less shocking today than it was during the pre‐internet era; but its notorious reputa on was not unwarranted.

Claudene Wharton Whether rich or poor, residents of the United States or China, illiterate or college graduates, parents who have books in the home increase the level of educa on their children will a ain, according to a 20‐year study led by Mariah Evans, University of Nevada, Reno associate professor of sociology and resource economics. For years, educators have thought the strongest predictor of a aining high levels of educa on was having parents who were highly educated. But, strikingly, this massive study showed that the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500 ‐book library has as great an effect on the level of educa on a child will a ain as having parents who are barely literate (3 years of educa on) compared to having parents who have a university educa on (15 or 16 years of educa on). Both factors, having a 500‐book library or having university‐educated parents, propel a child 3.2 years further in educa on, on average. Being a sociologist, Evans was par cularly interested to find that children of lesser‐educated parents benefit the most from having books in the home. She has been looking for ways to help Nevada’s rural communi es, in terms of economic development and educa on. “What kinds of investments should we be making to help these kids get ahead?” she asked. “The results of this study indicate that ge ng some books into their homes is an inexpensive way that we can help these children succeed.” Evans said, “Even a li le bit goes a long way,” in terms of the number of books in a home. Having as few as 20 books in the home s ll has a significant impact on propelling a child to a higher level of educa on, and the more books you add, the greater the benefit. “You get a lot of ‘bang for your book’,” she said. “It’s quite a good return‐on‐investment in a me of scarce resources.” In some countries, such as China, having 500 or more books in the home propels children 6.6 years further in their educa on. In the United States, the effect is less, 2.4 years,

What’s the Story?TM Share it! Page 11

The Power of Home Libraries than the 3.2‐year average advantage experienced across all 27 countries in the study. But, Evans points out that 2.4 years is s ll a significant advantage in terms of educa onal a ainment. For example, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey, Americans who have some college or an associate’s degree, but not a bachelor’s degree, earn an average of $7,213 more annually than those with just a high school educa on. Those who a ain a bachelor’s degree earn $21,185 more each year, on average, than those with just high school diplomas. The study by Evans and her colleagues at Nevada, UCLA and Australian Na onal University is one of the largest and most comprehensive studies ever conducted on what influences the level of educa on a child will a ain. The researchers were struck by the strong effect having books in the home had on children’s educa onal a ainment even above and beyond such factors as educa on level of the parents, the country’s GDP, the father’s occupa on or the poli cal system of the country. Having books in the home is twice as important as the father’s educa on level, and more important than whether a child was reared in China or the United States. Surprisingly, the difference in educa onal a ainment for children born in the United States and children born in China was just 2 years, less than two‐thirds the effect that having 500 or more books in the home had on children (3.2 years). The study, “Family scholarly culture and educa onal success: Books and schooling in 27 na ons,” was published in the journal, Research in Social Stra fica on and Mobility (Science Direct).
