Finding Your Voice

If you’re a writer or author, you might think I’m talking about finding your wri ng voice. On the contrary, in this context, the voice you need to find is your marke ng voice. In business, this would be your “brand voice”. Authors and writers need to think like a business, whether you write a series of books or a series of ar cles, developing your voice in marke ng is integral to the success of your wri ng. In an interview recently on What’s the Story? radio show, Tsufit, a coach, former a orney and author of Step Into the Spotlight, men oned the importance of her messages coming directly from her and not a canned announcement or an assistant wri ng her copy for her. So what is Tsufit telling us? Be genuine. Be yourself. Develop Editor: Janice Hermsen: janice@lrpnv.com

rela onships with the people you are trying to reach. As important as this is, it o en takes some me to discover the “right messaging” to use when marke ng whether it is in print or online. It may be uncomfortable to “be yourself” when you’re wri ng marke ng copy. You may think you need to portray a par cular a tude or persona. If the persona you are developing is construc ve and intended to improve your posi on as a writer, make sure you are genuine. It may take some me to develop and may require a few tries before you feel it resonates, but it is worth the

Ya Can’t Take It With Ya, So Leave It Here!

There's an old saying in sports and that's "Leave it on the field". In other words, give it all you have and walk away knowing you gave it all you had. Well, strangely enough, a er going through a small bump in the road with hurricane Irma, I'm even more determined to make each day count more than ever.

living.

It's not that I was ever in any life‐threatening danger, but it did give me a new perspec ve. Also, I seemed to have picked up more gigs and opportuni es just ge ng myself out there more.

I also shot another episode of my web series "Bengleton Socks" which I put together this weekend and was handed the script to another episode wri en by one of my comedian friends who has acted and wri en for this series. I could have made excuses for all of these things and may have done so in the past. I have learned that these are the things that really are worth living for and going through.

When you take an Improvisa on class as I have done, and con nue to perform as an improv ar st, one of the biggest things you learn is to say yes to everything. In improv you have to keep the story moving. In order to do so, you must agree with what the other actors "suggest" or act upon. I have learned this can work in life as well. Now, there will be mes to say no, but, some mes you must go with the flow and take the risk that it may be tough to do something. I think saying yes un l it's either damn near impossible or just doesn't make sense financially is the way to really enjoy

I just got back from hos ng Trivia from a gig I just got yesterday. I did it tonight and last week, I did 2 such gigs on last minute no ce. For one of them, I only got 4 hours no ce before I had to be there and I had no idea what type of Trivia show they needed. I had to wing it.

Be it adversity, crea vity, entertaining or just trying to make money to survive, life must con nue. I have learned to enjoy the full days of produc vity and accept the exhaus on that come with them as well. To look back on a day and think "now I have lived this day!" is a great feeling. As I write this, I must get ready for bed to get up early and drive to Rincon, Ga. a few hours away and do a show for The United Way. I believe tomorrow will also be a day where I feel I gave life my all and le it on the field. I hope to live every day forward like that and I admit I may not have done so every day in the past. I can't go back and change things, but I can (Continued on page 8)

Richard G. Pugh As a long me rider of MOPEDS…I’ve owned five of those neat things…I have become annoyed as the Nevada Legislature, with nothing more to do than create unnecessary regula on, ostensibly to protect owners from alleged the . One Nevada Senator took it upon himself to write a nonsense bill that became a nonsense Nevada law manda ng the registra on and licensing of mopeds which are li le more than bicycles with small motors. As of January 2017, all mopeds must be taken to the highway department and inspected and registered. Then the riders must stand in line and purchase a license plate at over $60.00. S ff fines are to be collected on unlicensed vehicles and their riders! The Las Vegas legislator who introduced this mess created flimsy sta s cs regarding increasing the as the reason for the legisla on. effort. Your marke ng voice needs to portray your message clearly and reach the intended audience. Do you know who your audience is? Do you know where they eat dinner, take their kids for summer vaca on? Are they millennials or seniors or somewhere in between? Do you have a clear message about your “product” (ar cle, book)? Can you describe it succinctly? What’s in it for your reader? Why should they read your piece instead of a writer they know? What makes you unique? If you can’t answer these ques ons, you are figh ng an uphill ba le. Keep in mind, the answers may be different depending on where you are doing your marke ng.

What’s the Story?TM Share it!

Unnecessary Regulations and they were difficult to recover thus requiring government to step in and protect us. Protect us from what? This has never been a proven problem but now it is FIXED! Bicycles do not need to be registered and I dare say they are stolen far more than mopeds. And let’s face it, mopeds are used by many Nevadans who have no other means to get them to their low paying jobs. What’s next…Skateboards? A er coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the posi on of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Associa on and serving as Director of Physician Rela ons at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh re red in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

Ul mately, finding your voice requires some thought and a desire to reach a par cular audience. Be persistent and diligent. Try more than one approach. Eventually, just like in your wri ng, your marke ng voice will resonate. womankind with Sunday and with church, and also with gentleness and kindness ‘which he believed himself doomed to be forever vic m of and which he hated worse than he did the hard and ruthless jus ce of men’. But this revolt against femininity suffers a final and horrific defeat when Joe is killed by a fana c vigilante near the novel’s end. The paragraph in which this shocking murder is described le me outraged but also awestruck. Religious symbolism is present throughout the novel and not exclusively in rela on to Joe. A pregnant woman named Lena Grove and a woodworker named Byron Bunch seem to be pa erned—loosely of course— a er Mary and Joseph of the Bible. In any case these two characters convincingly epitomize, for me, male and female decency. Lena Grove is searching for a scoundrel named Lucas Burch who abandoned her a er he learned of her pregnancy. In the course of her search, she meets Byron; the good man with whom she will undoubtedly se le. He helps her and cares for her, but holds back— shyly, exaspera ngly—from declaring his love for her. I have read a fair number of Faulkner’s novels, including “The Sound and the Fury”, which might be the most difficult one to understand. “The Reivers” was not bad, though I’d recommend the 1969 movie version over the book. “Sanctuary”, while impressive, is Faulkner at his pulpiest, and the 1930 novel called “As I Lay Dying” is uniquely powerful. But for me “Light in August” is Faulkner at his best. Had he wri en nothing else, I would s ll consider him one of the greatest novelists ever.
