Drew Howard: Comedian, Actor, Personality, Producer
I
want to welcome a friend and fellow Comedian/ Actor Drew Howard to the BTS Entertainment Corner. We've been working together for several years now. He had a radio show at the same internet station I had BTS Radio Show and when his show was winding down, he became the producer of my show. Drew has been in several Bengleton Socks web series episodes, BTS on the Road, also the short films Two Go In...One Comes Out. A Socumentary and he played the lead role in Dine with the Devil. When Drew's not performing or acting, he's hosting trivia or working on projects for Drew Howard Entertainment. He's also produced comedy shows at Ms. Roses in West Ashley for over 3 years, featuring nationally touring comedians. Most of the shows have been sell outs. He's also one of the auxiliary judges for the NSAEN Online Film Festival which is starting its 3rd season. Drew's been there from the beginning. BTS: Welcome Drew, I've known you for a while but my readers haven't, can you tell them how you got started in the "business"? DH: Well I've always had an ability to make people laugh. I was kind of a class clown in elementary school, and as I grew older, friends and family told me try comedy. After years of thinking about their advice, I signed up for the Stand Up Contest at Theatre 99 in Charleston, and fell in love with the stage. I started going to open mics, did another contest with Dave Ugly, who introduced me to Tony Kemp, and things just went from there.
BTS: You just finished your first short that you shot, starred in, edited and produced. How was the experience? What did you learn from the process of making Snow Day? DH: In January of 2018, there was a freak snowstorm that hit Charleston. I was "snowed in" at my apartment, and this was around the time we were working on Two Go In, so I was kind of thinking in a film creation way, and I just got the camera out and started filming. Within about five minutes, I had the idea for Snow Day. I recorded the raw footage, then kind of put it on the back burner. When we were making Dine With The Devil, Brian (T Shirley) and I discussed the idea, and I basically asked for Brian's blessing to make a Bengleton. Brian gave me the green light and after a few days of editing in my spare time, Snow Day finally came together. Making Snow Day taught me not to wait next time I want to take a chance on a new or different venture. It sat on my camera for over a year before I finally had the courage to finish it. BTS: Stand-up, improv, radio show host/producer, trivia host, acting, now film making. Do you have a favorite or do you just enjoy them all, especially whatever you currently doing? DH: Honestly, I enjoy whatever it is that I'm doing at that moment. It was a natural progression. Friends I made from stand-up were doing radio, so I went on their show, met Boyd and Brad. They were looking for more content, so my radio shows were born. Improv and trivia were the same way. I host trivia the most, currently four nights a week. (Continued on page 8)

Avoid 3 Of The Biggest Branding Content Mistakes To Better Your Business Image
he athletic gear and apparel giant, Nike, is one of the most globally recognized brands with its iconic "swoosh" logo with its well-known slogan asking competitors to "Just Do It!" Over the years, Nike has signed a number of professional athletes, famous Olympians and other sports-related celebrities to promote their brand and logo as a part of their wardrobe both on and off the field, court, inside and outside of stadiums. However, in 2018 Nike marketers missed the mark with a campaign aimed at raising awareness about social injustice and discrimination that brought their brand the wrong kind of attention.
1. A Full-Face Faux Pas We won't soon forget the print and media campaign featuring former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick with a black-and-white photograph of his full -face bolding stating, "Believe in something. Even if it means sacri cing everything." As we know, Kaepernick's refusal to stand for the playing of the National Anthem before game time raised many eyebrows among patriots while garnering support from activists. While his method of protest using freedom of speech as a platform on the football eld was respected by supporters, many Americans were seeing red with Nike's Choice as a spokesperson for their brand. The backlash (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/09/04/nikeshares-tumble-after-company-reveals-new-adcampaignfeaturing-colin-kaepernick.html) following the release of this campaign sent their stock into a tailspin and found former fans of their products cutting the Nike logos from apparel and burning their shoes on social media platforms publicly showing their protest over
Kaepernick's image associated with this brand. There are many lessons to be learned here from how embracing controversy could adversely affect your brand to the importance of choosing an in uencer wisely. In the case of Kaepernick, it was his past behaviors that were influencing consumer's reactions, but a brand can't afford to place their complete trust in a celebrity's future endeavors either.
2. Grave Mistake For A Beverage Brand Distributors of the unique Dr. Pepper beverage, the British distiller Cadbury Schweppes released an ad campaign that literally raised some grave concerns associated with their brand. Hidden inside an advertising campaign was a suggestion the company had stashed a coin potentially worth up to $1 million dollars somewhere inside Boston's historic district. One of the clues led scavengers to believe the artifact would be found in the city's centuries-old Granary Burial Grounds. This popular tourist attraction is the final resting place of many memorable American revolutionaries and patriots including Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and John Hancock. Before potentially hundreds of treasure hunters would likely desecrate the nal resting places of these historical heroes, luckily the City of Boston got wind of the message and locked the gates to the cemetery. This still left dozens of angry consumers unable to claim their prize and countless other customers upset after reading about the event in headlines (https:// consumerist.com/2007/02/26/dr-pepper-treasurehuntbanned-by-boston/). Dissimilar to Nike's nightmare, it was the location where the campaign was meant to ultimately unfold that was the most problematic. (Continued on page 14)

nyone who has spent a night or two in the wilderness knows that there is always a potential for danger. Most likely nothing too bad will happen—but you know that it could. James Dickey’s “Deliverance” actualizes that potential for danger, and evil, with impressive force. Published in 1970 and set in the American South, it concerns four city men who go on a canoe trip in the wilds of Georgia. Their weekend adventure plunges harrowingly into the very heart of darkness. The book’s first-person narrator is Ed Gentry. Early on, one gathers that he is undergoing a crisis of some sort; probably of the mid-life variety. His three companions are Lewis Medlock, a likeable but fanatic survivalist who thrives on danger; Bobby Trippe, a superficially pleasant fellow whose nature is not inclined to roughing it; and Drew Ballinger, a law-abiding and musically talented family man. The rape-episode in “Deliverance” has gained notoriety in popular culture via the deservedly acclaimed film adaptation. But the protagonists have more to contend with than that alone. The river itself becomes an extreme menace; and when the men decide, in a three-to-one vote, to cover up the entire incident in which they’ve become embroiled, they run the risk of facing murder charges. The narrative also includes an uncertainty element, as when Ed is constrained to kill a man who may or may not be the enemy. Not to be overlooked is the untamed beauty of the setting, a quality that is present in both the book and the film. The latter effectively captures the ringing calls of birds, the buzz of insects, the croaks of frogs and the constant
Deliverance by James Dickey
thunder of foaming rapids. The book depicts these wilderness wonders with even greater clarity, as when an owl perches on Ed’s tent intermittently during the first night. Or there is the following nighttime description of the river: ‘It was the most glorious thing I have ever seen. But it was not seeing, really. For once it was not just seeing. It was beholding. I beheld the river in its icy pit of brightness, in its far-below sound and indifference, in its large coil and tiny points and flashes of the moon, in its long sinuous form…’ The book is not without flaws, however. At times it is too chatty, and a few of the details seem implausible. Worse still is Ed’s hardhearted, contemptuous regard for Bobby, the victim of rape. On the other hand, Ed’s most redeeming trait is his consistent respect for Drew, whose decency he never disparages. There are moments in “Deliverance”, especially in its darkest places, that seem almost too real. It is as if you are reading about something that actually happened to the author, to James Dickey. But I trust that it did not happen, that it is not a true account of an appalling incident disguised as a piece of fiction. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

TOPIC: Socialism vs Capitalism
Perspectives from many sides
It has been a volatile period in history with dramatic splits between people and parties. Rather than maintaining silence, What’s the Story™ would like to contribute some down to earth, peoplefocused OPINIONS. These do not reflect our view necessarily; they reflect the views of people who identify as one of the parties listed. If you belong to one of these parties, your view might be different than what is expressed. That is to be expected. Our goal is to provide perspectives and contribute to the conversation, not by yelling, anger or disruption but by sharing as many views as we can allowing EVERYONE to express their First Amendment right to Freedom Of Speech. “Of the people, by the people, for the people”.
WHAT WE ASKED: Socialism vs. Capitalism-Why is there a question in the U.S.?

ocialism vs. Capitalism – Why is there a question? People in the United States often confuse socialism (or democratic socialism in this case) with Communism, but they are totally different. We experience democratic socialism every day. We see its implementation in our fire and police forces, our infrastructure would not be possible without democratic socialism. However, thanks to the folks at FOX News and other Conservative leaders, democratic socialism’s relationship with our society has been demonized until most people have no idea what it really is. Republican leaders have not put forth an infrastructure bill nor have they supported one in many years, mainly because the newer echelon of leaders refuse to realize that infrastructure is used by everyone, including their rich donors. They won’t allow spending money for actual benefit, but are happy giving it away as incentives. They identify bills as wasteful when they (Continued on page 11)

istorian Alexander Tyler 1747-1813 knew something about the nature of freedom…….. It doesn’t last. “Democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only last until the people learn that they can vote for themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on the majority always vote for the candidate promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that always collapses over loose fiscal policy(taxing and spending), always followed by a dictatorship”. The average life of the world’s greatest civilizations has been two hundred years.” So why the shift from freedom to bondage? It’s called the pride cycle; it goes like this. A people break free from oppression and bondage and return to a moral standard of living, even returning to a humble walk with their creator. They promise to never forget God again and so he blesses them with peace, plenty and happiness. In their new prosperity, they work hard and enjoy the fruits of their labor and spend time in (Continued on page 11)

ocialism. The simple definition is: “The government will give you everything you need for free, tell you what to do and…trust us!” So what is the attraction that socialism has on young people (millennials)? I asked a Millennial about socialism. He basically came back with, “What’s wrong with free?” I explained that someone has to pay and that our country cannot stay strong and competitive in the world market if we are broke. Millennials want something for nothing and socialism would definitely bankrupt our country. We study history in school to learn from our past mistakes. Socialism has failed in other countries, so why should we go there? To lose? Capitalism is a proven success story, why switch now? When I was in the military, we used to say, “If it is not broke, don’t fix it!” I can tell Millennials how to get stuff for free without voting for socialism… join the military! BTS: As you grow as an entertainer, has your vision for your career changed any? I know mine has, it seems to be a natural progression. DH: I don't know if its so much the vision for my career changing, or if its just the way the world is changing. Entertainment used to be a very controlled environment. A few gatekeepers at the top decided where your career path went. Even cable and satellite didn't change the landscape like streaming and video on demand has. Now, it's become easier for creators and entertainers to connect with their audience, but the audiences have become smaller and more niche. You find a more passionate and supportive audience this way,
Comedy on Facebook and @entertainmentDH on Twitter. I'll post the trailer on there first. Bengleton Socks Snow Day is currently in festival submissions, but a public screening will take place sometime over the summer, and hopefully it will be available online and streaming by the end of 2019. And there's a list of Bengleton ideas that hopefully Brian, Lance (Morrison) and I can make in the near future. BTS: I must say it's been really cool to watch you grow in all these different aspects of your career and personal life. You just got married to a very wonderful and supportive lady. How has she been there for you through all of this?
BTS: I know you're working on some new projects, can you share any of them with our audience and where can they find your stuff?
DH: Summer is amazing. She is very supportive of all that I do. She works the door for the Ms Rose's Comedy Hour, she's always the first to see whatever I'm working on and there for me to bounce ideas off of.
DH: I can't say much at the moment, but a teaser trailer is coming very soon, based off a South Carolina legend. I'm very excited for this because it is the most ambitious endeavor that I've embarked on. Be sure to check out Drew Howard
BTS: Is there any advice...warnings you have for those entertainers just starting out or even some of old crusty dogs still out here running the road? DH: Be flexible. And "no comment"

Give Your Memoir More Authority and Authenticity
memoir is simply the story of what happened at a particular time and place in one’s life. That time and place is the context in which a story exists. To give the story authenticity and authority, it’s a good idea to weave in things that were present, such as: a popular song or movie, cars, toys, radio/TV shows, styles and fashions, fads, hairstyles, appliances, news headlines, celebrities and politicians to identify the era, as well as physical landmarks to nail down the place in which the story occurs. In a short memoir written to illustrate this concept, I included some of the issues of the day: Out there, in the middle of the ocean, we were hungry for news. In addition to the Hungarian Revolution roiling, Eisenhower and Nixon had just been reelected… Elvis Presley was hotter than hot—any news of him was bound to be titillating. … Grace Kelly had recently married Monaco’s Prince Ranier and we girls were eager for news of the fairy tale couple. Further down in the story I wrote: …Finally, as the voyage neared its end, the Statue of Liberty came into view…
From the politicians, celebrities, and events mentioned, the reader grasps the era in which it occurred. The mention of “the middle of the ocean” and “the Statue of Liberty” identifies location. These items were not the story, but they made it more real and therefore more interesting. The story was about the long ocean voyage from Bremerhaven, on the North Sea, to the New York Harbor in November, 1956. As you add in tidbits pertinent to the context of your story, you’re giving your reader a very real experience. It’s generally not necessary to define or describe a detail; just a passing mention might be enough, e.g: Before going to bed, I set my hair in rollers and wrapped my head in toilet paper. If you want to give more detail, such as the fact that the “rollers” were frozen orange juice cans, feel free. It’s an interesting detail, but not crucial to the story – unless, of course, it is. If you need a little help remembering what was happening at the time of your story, there’s always Google. What did writers do before Google? I remember, do you? (Continued on page 10)

Hours and days of research at the library, going through reels and reels of microfisch. But what if what you’re researching doesn’t come up on Google? Your local library is still a good source, and the librarian will be most helpful. One of the best resources is your town’s historical society. If you no longer live in your hometown, give that city’s historical society a call. I’ve only had very positive experiences with longdistance research, as well as up-close. They’ll be thrilled you’re writing a book and want to include historical memories about their favorite city. Dropping time and place bits into your story is easy and fun, and it enhances your reader’s enjoyment. Carol Purroy has taught memoir writing for nearly 30 years, and has written and published a How-to/Why-to book on the subject: YOUR LEGACY; The stories of your life. interfere with tax cuts, instead of supporting funding to fix roads and bridges. The interstate highway system is one of the largest socialized programs ever conceived and was the product of a Republican president who would be drummed out of the party under today’s conservative litmus test. Republicans downplay socialized medicine as a failure in all the countries who have it, yet the citizens of those countries often are amazed that such an advanced country as the United States still has a profit driven medical care system that costs lives every year. The idea of socialized medicine is so demonized that only the most liberal of democrats will even mention it. The Affordable Care Act, a law that was supposed to lay the groundwork for reforming medical care, has been watered down until it is simply a give away to large insurance companies, while doing little to control medical costs. Only the rules concerning pre-existing conditions serves to help those who really need care. The differences between socialism and communism are wide, but due to a press corps that owe allegiance to their own conservative masters, the two are almost unilaterally spoken of as the same thing. Socialism doesn’t mean government owned businesses, where communism is exactly that. Russia isn’t even governed under true communistic principles anymore, which says a lot about its true efficacy. Under the current administration, citizens see what truly capitalistic principles deliver. Capitalism is entirely about profit. Conservative leaders speak of the free market economy as if it should be held as a standard for our society and as the only way to move our country forward. The free market gives businesses (Continued on page 13)

the pursuit of fun. They begin to forget their past bondage and their promise to live good clean lives and eventually once again they forget their God. Life isn’t as good as it once was, things begin to break down. Then, when a nation turns against their God they look for security from those who are oppressing them. When they lose their stuff, through theft and taxation, and by the way, one in the same, they lose their hope. When hope is gone , sometimes they return to God. It the pride cycle, from bondage to humility, from humility to repentance, from repentance to prosperity , from prosperity to bondage and the cycle continues. It’s the lazy; its those seeking for power over the lazy who are pushing socialism. It’s total control; it’s the lust for power. It is the nature and disposition of almost all people as soon as they get a little authority as they suppose, they will immediately begin to exercise dominion and control over others. So are we as the once great guardians of freedom, now ready to give up our freedom for security? Seems so doesn’t it? It is the dumbed down who plead for socialism. But of course this has been the plan for decades. Create a problem that only the government and
free transportation, free education and training and even free medical care! When I mentioned that to the Millennial, he replied with, “But isn’t the military a hard life? Don’t they yell at you?” “Yes it is and yes they do,” I replied and added, “but more than worth it.” He shot back with, “Not for me.” Is this what our country has become with the arrival of social media and smart phones? Young people are all over social media and are talking about socialism like it’s the greatest thing since the advent of sliced bread! Given the growing sensation of socialism with young people, as a country, we need to come together and have this real conversation. Let me take this time to paint a picture of socialism in action… Larger private companies would come under the control and ownership of the government gradually. The government would direct every aspect of your life. The 2nd Amendment is gone… forever. Martial law could be initiated at any time. You are told what doctor to see with long lines. The only transportation available to the masses will be what the government authorizes (Green New Deal). What food is available is controlled by the government. Speech would be restricted.

nside the thick fog of confusion, a blurry vision of haunting images seems to spin around within memories of yesterday’s thoughts and moments.
Our Connection
“Walk the Turtle”
I feel you each day, your spirit lives inside my soul. I am one day closer to holding you in heaven. I love and miss you, Brittany.
Echoes of voices, laughter, and cries replay deep in the grieving soul as waves hit the shore and ocean mist fills the air; we are but a grain of sand. Seasons are changing as dusk begins to cover each day, a spinning world of contentment and despair circles upon our emotional walk through life. Happiness lost among troubled times as blessings pour out among the stars; we hold the key to overcome our fears and loss as love prevails in time. Sentimental streets and back roads of dirt are met by the crossroads of peace as we wander into tomorrow’s challenges uncertain if our end is near. Walk the turtle without bitterness or resentment inside our hearts as we surrender to the orchestration of a divine presence felt by our connection.

solve, then offer a solution that requires government compassion that brings about another government boondoggle which creates more taxation and oppression. Capitalism is no different in the end. If the same wicked people who orchestrate socialism also orchestrate socialism, the end result of both is still bondage. When the love of money is the root of all evil, evil will always have power to oppress the masses. The only solution is to return to virtue. As Samuel Adams said “a general dissolution of principles and manners will more surly overthrow the liberties of America than the whole force of the common enemy. While the people are virtuous, they cannot be subdued but when they lose their virtues they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. God Help us!
What you hear and read will be censored. Keep in mind that the unintended consequences of socialism could lead us into a dictatorship like China with a president for life! Millennials believe in the redistribution of wealth and are clearly looking for leadership in a world that is confusing. I can assure you, that if we adopt socialism over capitalism, it will strike a death knell for the middle class. Socialism is NOT an experiment that I want to experience as it would cripple our country beyond anything that you could imagine. As a country, we need to: cherish and preserve our Constitution, promote capitalism, defend the free exchange of ideas, secure our borders and stand solidly behind our President to Make America Great Again!

true power over, not just how they do business, but how our leaders decide how we live our lives. Businesses are donating money to politicians and demanding laws that protect employees, the environment and how we all interact be limited or stricken from the books altogether. Allowing big business to pollute at will, lower worker safety standards and create an economy that delivers profits over everything else. Democratic socialism and its principles must continue to support services needed to help the poor, homeless, fire and police, infrastructure for roads, maintaining the power grid, keep water flowing into homes and sewers to carry waste away. Without these programs, our country and the wider world will become a desolate wasteland.

3. Big Brewer In Legal Hot Water Brewers of Coors Light beer crafted a pair of confusing slogans for their popular beverage back in the nineties that caught the eye of the New York State Attorney General's office. A pair of companion slogans stated, "Coors Light won't slow you down" and "There's no slowing down with the Silver Bullet tonight" were quickly lost in legal translation. "The ads were designed to make consumers believe that drinking Coors Light would not affect coordination and other physical and mental abilities," stated Attorney General Robert Adams in a press release (https:// www.apnews.com/173345e11ef93d8ddfd9c27ad2876f1 5). "This is a very dangerous message" added Adams and some of the consequences Coors Light faced included: • The removal of all existing advertising and refraining from placing new ones using the "objectionable slogans and implications" • Associative displays on the "Silver Bullet" jet and race car on television ads would also cease to exist • Reimbursement of court costs paid by the company totaled $100,000 Obviously, for the crafters of this Coors content, it was their verbiage that veered them off course with this campaign. LeRue Review 3 Chapter View If you’re an author, you may know that, often, publishers request only a few chapters of your book to consider for publishing. If you can wow them in those first pages and chapters, paint a good picture of your characters or in some way, grab them, you might get to the next step in consideration to publish your book.
Opening sentences are an important aspect of any book or article. Mager missed the mark on this aspect of Emmylou and the Pixels; however, she makes up for it in the story that follows. Good dialogue between family members as Mager sets the stage well for a little suspense and intrigue even as she pulls on your heartstrings with a Mom recovering from chemotherapy treatments. I was reminded of the many trips I made with siblings as Emmylou’s brother, Levi, got carsick as they made their way through the winding mountain roads. If LeRue was accepting manuscripts in this genre, we would consider this one a potential winner.
