Ranelle Golden: A FilmMaker That Knows How to Transcend

I had an opportunity to catch up with Ranelle Golden, filmmaker and founder of the Cosmic Film Festival. Brian (B): You have led an interesting and at times, a very challenging life. How have these trials and triumphs shaped your writing and creating, particularly with your book Twin Curse and the short film Saving Amy? Ranelle (R): Ah, Twin Curse, my baby. This project was a book I published and then bought the rights back to so I could further develop it. It started as a story for my kids and grew into a trilogy. It's a bucket list project for sure. Saving Amy was my first film I ever made. It was a short development to promote the feature screenplay. It was also the first film I ever directed, because my hired Director didn't show up. The crew picked me, and the rest is history. B: How did Hit Women come about and where are you with the project right now? R: Hit Women isn't exactly what people assume from the name. It was inspired by my best friend’s cheating husband and her desire to seek some help in how to deal with it. I couldn't help her but I could write about it, taking on subjects often taboo and making people think while they laugh. In 2015, we made a series trailer for all written (Continued on page 5)

History of Japanese Religion

by Masaharu Anesaki In a 1974 movie called “The Yakuza”, it is claimed that the Japanese do not believe in a heaven or hell. Granted, the film’s story/ screenplay was written by three nonJapanese (Paul Schrader, Leonard Schrader and Robert Towne) but “The Yakuza” seems authoritative where Japanese culture and history are concerned. I mention this at the outset because most Westerners know little about the Japanese except what they learn via cinema and television. Another reason I mention it is because non-Japanese “experts” have a habit of making bogus generalizations similar to the one above. An effective antidote to misrepresentations of this type is Masaharu Anesaki’s “History of Japanese Religion” (1930). Though it emerged from the first-half of the twentieth century and is somewhat antiquated in

Book Review

places, it provides readers with a rich and epic picture of Japan’s religious story. As presented by Anesaki, Japanese religion is shown to be as diverse as it is profound. He approaches his subject, not as an aloof outsider, but as a historian who is himself religious (Buddhist). As such, his observations are consistently insightful and yet critical when necessary. There is nothing partisan about him. For example, his treatment of the Christian presence in Japan is conveyed in a fair and sympathetic manner. Readers learn about the introduction, growth and eventual destruction of Christianity under the Tokugawa Shogunate during the 1600s. ‘Thus was established,’ Anesaki writes, ‘a reign of national seclusion lasting over two centuries, certainly due to the “evils” of Kirishitan [Christianity] but more to the caprice or cowardice of a tyrant.’ (Continued on page 7)

Eddie Floyd For those who are familiar with World Matters, we do business as America Matters Media and we are seeking sponsors who truly care about making a difference in our community. We are the “Home of Community Radio”, and our community is now the world. Since June 1st of this year makes 11 years for me, personally, being clean and sober, I would like to dedicate the rest of my life with a different type of “A. A.”. I’m calling it Alcoholics Announced. Companies, churches or other caring organizations can sponsor our new show for the discounted rate of $210.00 per month. The way I look at it is this: If we can save one life and family per week, then the show will be a tremendous success and it will not be long before we syndicate it in our nation and around the world too! I have been in radio for over three decades both directly and indirectly. This feels like a way to pay back to society and God for the fact that, while I was drinking, I never hurt anyone. But, I also know that “There but by the Grace of GOD, go I”. So it is time to repay both with this show. If you personally have a story to share or would like to be involved with this venture, I would love a call from you at 775-384-4444, or stop by our studio in the Reno Town Mall. We air in front of a live audience, and will take

questions or comments from them, as well as toll free calls around the world at 844-790-8255 (TALK). I personally think the original A.A. not only has been extremely successful saving lives and families, but also feel that Alcoholics Announced can do the very same thing. For additional details on how you can help save a life with this show, or add help to a family member, friend, or associate, either stop by and meet with me personally or (Continued on page 7)

13 episodes. We've been working to pitch it for full development. It's proving to be a long process. B: I'm Executive Producer of the NSAEN Film Festival and I've seen and heard a lot about your Cosmic Film Festival. Tell us about the genesis of this entity and is it more than just your average film festival? Where can people go to find out more? R: Cosmic was born of my desire to find more opportunities to recognize women in film and to promote filmmakers

R: Oh boy, what can I share. We have three episodes done, and in post. We are working to release in June if all goes well. However, we've been approached by international distribution and a few other exciting things I can't talk about yet. Though we still have three episodes to finish for the full season. The talent in this show is amazing too. I'm very greatful to the whole Transcend Team. B: From books, to music and film making, you are working on an incredible career. Any advice....warnings for us creative types? R: My best advice from experiences I've had, is to register your work and make sure you get releases from everyone when you are making a film. But most importantly, don't dream - do. My motto is #DreamInAction. Every step counts, even small ones. Claim it and don't be afraid. overall. One of the things I do is interview and write articles on as many as humanly possible of our submitters. We also work hard to bring workshops and panels that will benefit filmmakers at all levels. I have a personal mission to help people understand that doing contracts even as a small indie filmmaker is vital. I'm also amazed at how many filmmakers don't know about or realize the chain of title. Then struggle with trying to get distribution and not having documentation. I worry about them. B: You have a new TV series coming out called Transcend. Spill the beans, we want to know all about it, or as much as you would like to share.

Richard G. Pugh The Siegfried and Roy act on the Las Vegas strip ran for many years and was very popular; it was truly a sad day when it was canceled. They made the strip come alive with their feats of legerdemain and illusions of disappearing animals, cars and such. Their specialty was ..making large cats simply vanish! They had a very large home ....more like a castle fortress...and that's where those animals had freedom to roam at large. One day, Roy came home with a brand new pair of expensive shoes he was going to exhibit at that night's performance but he made the mistake of leaving them by the back door and that is where they disappeared. A search began. Roy located his shoes in the grasp and teeth I think it is good that books still exist, but they do make me sleepy. -Frank Zappa http://coolfunnyquotes.com

of his largest and most possessive white tiger. He knew this particular feline very well; there was little point in trying to retrieve them so he called in his veterinarian who darted and tranquilized his beauty. They loaded the 'sleeping beauty' him in a wheelbarrow and headed back toward the mansion. As they approached, from the balcony came a curious question from his long time partner Siegfried: "PARDON ME, ROY, IS THAT THE CAT THAT CHEWED YOUR NEW SHOES?" After coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the position of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Association and serving as Director of Physician Relations at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh retired in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

His book introduces readers to an impressive array of religious figures, some of whom have about them a distinctive glow of holiness. The ones that stood out for me are Hōnen (1133-1212), the great founder of Japan’s Pure Land Buddhism; Nakaye Tōju (1608-48), a Confucian who was called “the Sage of Ōmi”; Kino (1756-1826), a nondenominational religious teacher and prophetess; Kurozumi Munetada (1779-1849), a Shinto teacher whose religion ‘verged on monotheism pure and simple’; and Ryōsen Tsunashima (died 1908), a Christian mystic. There are many others who are noteworthy, but these struck me as especially attractive or intriguing. Anesaki concludes his history on a somewhat pessimistic note. The organized religious bodies of his era—in particular, Christian, Buddhist and Shinto—are subjected to a measure of sharp and no doubt deserved criticism. For example: ‘The missionaries who still play an integral part in many of the Churches are often too much representatives of their respective nationalities; they identify their own national manners, habits, even prejudices, with the Christian religion’. However, the overall effect of “History of Japanese Religion” is positive. From no other source have I gained (Continued from page 4)

such a clear and comprehensive description of its titular subject. Moreover, Anesaki’s book excels not only as an instructive historical guide but as an affirmation of the human need for religious purpose. John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

Fear Nothing

“Walk the Turtle”

Perceptions of the mind are created as we walk along the paths of life; we cross those bridges and face certain turning points that bestow change. Beyond comprehension or understanding, we find ourselves in positions that prepare us for the next milestone of our journey; wisdom guides us. Unexpected circumstances and people are placed upon our heart, compassion to embrace the unknown and to seek our soul purpose is in fate. Scripture is available by the divine for us to overcome any hardship as well as receiving an unconditional love felt by the warm light of our savior. Walk the turtle with focus of truth, a desire to encourage fellowship by lending your helping hand and being kind to yourself as you fear nothing.
