Brian T. Shirley Just in me for the new school year, here's an ar cle on those lovely li le creatures we call "children". This, of course, is fic on. Or is it? As an entertainer and WEB TV Series creator, I did an interview with a gentleman to find out about an interes ng theory he had. Sir Elton John once sang that "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids". Well, according to Assistant Principal Gib Gerbner, Captain Fantas c got it wrong. Gerbner said, “I thought a lot about the song "Rocket Man" over the years and I asked myself , Why? Why can't they raise kids on Mars?” Mr. Gerbner started to get a li le emo onal, then con nued. "A er doing a lot of research and praying, I'm believe Mars would be the perfect place for children to be schooled. For one thing, they would be very far from Earth. And the bonuses don't stop there." says Gerbner. He and his wife of 37 years, who is a re red school teacher, have no children of their own, but have been looking at the Mars situa on for many years. "Children would learn at an advanced rate there as the Mar an environment would actually make them smarter. There would be no cell phones, TV or Internet on Mars, so all they would be able to do is to learn," explained the drooling Assistant Principal, who will be re ring a er this school year, he hopes. "No one wants to be an Assistant Principal anymore, so they keep begging me to stay on. I do it for the...children? Yes, that's it." Gib said as he stared out at his front yard hopefully. "Think of how exci ng it would be for them! They would catch all kinds of interes ng new

Mars IS the Kind of Place to Raise Your Kids diseases. Perhaps sores on their arms that grow mouths and talk to them. Or maybe a cold that produces blue mucus. I get chills just thinking about it." Gib wiped the sweat from his forehead and con nued. "You can't sag your spacesuit on Mars! You'd be headed for a cosmic funeral," Gib said in a very serious tone. " Here's a scenario a lot of parents run into these days. Let's say you have a daughter beginning to date. Now here comes her perspec ve suitor to your door with his pants waist down around his thighs, a ta oo of a misspelled word on his neck and a nail running straight through his nose. All you can think to yourself is, 'If this kid can't operate a belt and a pair of pants, he's going to have a real problem figuring out how to use a condom.' However!! If my program were in place, you could slam the door in his face, turn to your daughter and say 'You're going to Mars!!!'" Gib clapped his hands and laughed gleefully. "Now I realize that this could happen on Mars as well. But if your daughter did get pregnant on Mars, when she returns with the child, you tell her that she's not raising a Mar an baby in your house. What's she going to do call you a 'Mar an‐a‐phobe'?" Gib laughed again, then got serious. "I'm joking, of course. That would be your grandbaby, but a er 5 years or so, guess what? Time for that Mars kindergarten, oh yeah!" Gib raised his fist in victory. " Yes, I'm afraid Elton dropped the ball on this one. Well, I'm off to prove that Saturday night is NOT alright for figh ng. I'm thinking Thursday a ernoon is the way to go. Later Honky Cat!!" said Mr. Gerbner as he walked out of his house and locked me and my film crew inside. Brian T. Richard G. Pugh Every summer since moving to Reno in 1973 I have enjoyed joining my friends in our “Pure‐in‐Heart Bow Hunt Club”. Usually there are a couple of doctors, den sts, a lawyer, and a few other ‘hunters’: our success rate is unblemished. In all those years we have never harmed a deer or other living cri er! And, and yes, deer tags from the Dept. of Wildlife are in hand…….that is when we are lucky in the annual draws. That lack of success has never meant we don’t try …for example we bring plenty of deer bags, have always prac ced our archery skills, sharpened our arrows, and have accumulated numerous recipes for cooking up a mess of deer liver! But, alas, we have never had the excitement and enjoyment of such a dish. However, we all have valued very good company, the shop‐worn stories, and outrageous jokes! One of our greatest hunters of long standing is encouraged to recite the epic poem “The Crema on of Sam McGee” by Robert Service, a cherished camp tradi on. His recita on is not always flawless a er a few drinks of a delicious beverage I’ll men on later. We have enjoyed hiking in some beau ful country and have seen deer…frequently lots of ‘em… but those have always been the female variety….harming one of those beau es has always been ’verboten’ during all 43 years of “bucks only’ hiking/hun ng. In early September, the aspens are beginning to change colors and the evenings are ge ng to be right nippy. Later the coyotes sing their mournful chorus reminding us we are guests in THEIR home. The nippiness is rarely felt around a blazing campfire and the enjoyment of several drinks of “Who Shot John?” the delicious beverage men oned earlier.
Out Back Nevada A er forty‐three years of venturing out in the wilds of the Silver State, a toll is being taken on our inveterate hunters. The long hikes are ge ng shorter, and the complaints of sore hips, knees, and shoulders are becoming more frequent. Ge ng up at the ‘crack of eight’ in the morning is, sadly, becoming the norm. However, our hiking with hopes of scaring up a deer is s ll far be er than si ng up in a tree stand and wai ng for hours and hours for unsuspec ng bucks to pass underneath only to feel the steel of our razor point arrows. Please tell me, where’s the sport in that? I will con nue to do this hun ng, eh, hiking, as long as I am able. It is the highlight of my Nevada year. Maybe next year, one of us will actually kill a deer and, please, not a road kill either, but sadly that will end of our Nevada Adventure.
A er coming to Reno from Charleston, S.C. in 1973 to accept the posi on of CEO of the Nevada State Medical Associa on and serving as Director of Physician Rela ons at Washoe Medical Center for two years, Pugh re red in 1990. Later he helped establish Health Access Washoe County (HAWC) and served as Board Member and President for several years. He has served as Adjunct Clinical Instructor at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and authored four books through the History of Medicine Program there.

John Loranger This work of fic on, like Salinger’s “For Esme—with Love and Squalor”, is rooted in the devasta on of World War II. The author, Walter M. Miller, was an American airman who par cipated in the ba le of Cassino in Italy, where the Germans had set up defenses in and around a famous abbey. The abbey itself, founded by St. Benedict in the 500s A.D., was finally bombarded by the Allies in 1944. Such destruc on impressed—and trauma zed—Miller, and the eventual result was A Can cle for Leibowitz. Published in 1959, it is a science‐fic on classic. The story opens around the year 2600, some six hundred years a er a twen eth‐century nuclear holocaust. A young monk named Brother Francis, while enduring a solitary Lenten penance in the desert, discovers a number of items in the rubble of a fallout shelter. The items include handwri en notes, a grocery list and a blueprint of some sort. Such things are considered sacred by the monks of Brother Francis’s monastery, who belong to an order devoted to the preserva on of ancient wri ngs and ancient knowledge. These items in par cular are treasured because they may have belonged to a twen eth‐century martyr named Isaac

Edward Leibowitz. Although the monks preserve the material faithfully and me culously, centuries will pass before another Galileo or Einstein is able to decipher the meaning of these “sacred relics”. This first part of a three‐part novel takes place in terrain that used to be the western United States, but the society and culture that’s portrayed evokes Western Europe a er the fall of the Roman Empire. Part 2 is set during a Renaissance‐like period and Part 3 resembles our own technologically advanced age. The novel’s central theme concerns the pa erns of history: the rise and fall of civiliza ons and rebirth from the ashes. But equally important is a theme concerning the perpetual conflict between the values and beliefs of religion and those of secularism. The novel’s historical perspec ve conveys a sense of the transitory nature of human society and is as applicable to the present age as to any other. One is reminded of the famous scene at the end of the 1968 version of “Planet of the Apes”, when Charlton Heston encounters the Statue of Liberty and damns humankind for its wanton self‐destruc veness. But the effect in Miller’s novel is, for

However, if she is a baffling character, she is also very fascina ng and I’m glad that she was included. Another mysterious figure is that of a certain immortal wanderer who is present off and on throughout the novel.
