hough I decided long ago to maintain some degree of

skepticism where any historian is concerned, I enjoy and trust Paul Johnson above the rest. His epic study, “A History of the American People”, comes to mind in a special way. Divided into eight parts, it begins with Colonial America. Most of us, I think, have only a vague grasp of this period. We might picture darkly garbed puritans, witches and witch-trials but little else. Johnson sharpens and expands the view. He does the same within each of the parts that he deals with, any one of which can be read on its own.

A History of the American People by Paul Johnson Book Review “A History of the American People” is almost a thousand pages long. But readers who do not want to tackle the whole thing can choose a topic of interest from among the eight parts. Civil War America, for example (Part Four), is under a hundred pages long but is packed with engrossing information about the people and events that were involved in this specific period of America’s past. Johnson touches on nearly every significant force, good and bad, that has been in play throughout America’s history. The political leaders are dealt with extensively but not exclusively. We also learn much concerning the country’s artists, writers, thinkers, entrepreneurs and inventors. Readers could spend a lifetime pursuing the endless array of individuals and (Continued on page 6)

known for her appearances as Mrs. Dodds/The Fury in Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, Paranormal Activity 3, American Horror Story and Rob Zombie's Lords of Salem, Maria Olsen has worked on more than 100 feature films and over 150 shorts, television shows, music videos and commercials since 2005."

An Interview with Maria Olsen tied to it. How is that film doing? MO: Jamie and I recently heard from the producers that the film is now officially out of post-production! We haven't yet been told how, and through who, it will be distributed, though, but, as soon as we know, and as soon as we have been given permission to share, we will be shouting it from the rooftops. We're holding thumbs that it will be out before the end of the year. BTS: I have noticed that 2018 seems to have been pretty busy for

She also appeared in a national commercial during the 2018 Academy Award ceremony!! *BTS ENT Corner Trivia Brian T. Shirley (BTS): Well, I believe this may be my 3rd or 4th interview with you over the last several year Maria and it's always a pleasure! Not only are you an amazing actress and director, but you help some many others out as well. Let's start with one of your latest ventures, I'm talking about your "The MOnster Shares Auditions" FB group. It's a great resource to find auditions; how do you do it? Marial Olsen (MO):Well, if I gave away all my secrets there'd be no reason for anyone to join my group! Seriously, I'm a member of a gazillion Facebook acting groups, and I have a full roster of 5,000 friends, so I figured out a way to search thru my groups' and friends' data base for certain hot terms like "audition"and "casting". Then I just take a look at the posts that turn up in the search and share them with my group. Originally, I was doing this just for myself, but then I thought "why not let everyone share in the opportunities I'm finding?" With this in mind, I created the group, and invited everyone to join. It's open to talent with all levels of experience and from anywhere in the US. A lot of people are saying they're finding opportunities there they would never otherwise have found, and my Lil MOnsters are booking projects too, which makes me just SO happy! Come and join us and, above all: Go Get 'Em, Lil MOnsters!!!! BTS: The last time we talked (on the air, "What's the Story?" radio show) it was actually a double interview with you and actress Jamie Bernadette for the movie "I Spit on Your Grave Deja Vu". Great interview with you ladies and you let us know this version actually had the original director from the first film

you; anything coming up you can't wait to talk about? C'mon, who we gonna tell? MO: So far, I've shot at least 12 feature films in 2018, and the year isn't over yet! Let's see if I can remember them all… • •

e have a nest of Cooper’s Hawks living in the tall cottonwood trees in our neighborhood and they are systematically killing off our beautiful quail, and doves. It’s a massacre! Over the years we have seen quail and their young scurrying about the ‘hood adding a measure of charm and beauty. Well, we have all heard the old saw about “Where there is something to eat, there will also be something there to eat it!” One particularly gruesome area in my back yard is the favorite spot for hawks and their young to dine on the easy pickings of helpless critters and their numbers are being reduced substantially. For the past two years all the quail nd their young are gone and I don’t mean they have simply looked for safer places to live. The music of the Mourning Doves is gone. All that is left in that killing area are feathers and various other non-digestible parts of once beautiful birds. Last year I called the County Wildlife office to see what choices were open to me. A suggestion was made to plant thickets and shrubs where the little ones might hide and sternly warned me not to go about shooting the hawks with my air rifle or slingshot. This is not allowed since hawks are a protected species with stiff penalties for violators. Also not permitted is the setting of traps and attempts at relocating these killers elsewhere. At one time we had a huge owl who would

Hawks frequently visit the area and his presence would set numerous brave small birds and hawks on a steady attack…raising such a ruckus the owls would soon leave. I haven’t seen that owl for several years now. Another suggestion offered by friends was to get one or more cats to manage the hawks and that that should do the job! It only made the matter worse as cats destroyed as many birds as the Hawks did! Several years ago I bought one of those mean looking electronic owls with yellow eyes that would set off a sound resembling an owl though not even closely. I fastened it in the “HAWK DINING HALL” area and it did create an effective disturbance for a while. The adult hawks and their new chicks would dive bomb that fake bird with a vengeance. Periodically I would go out and relocate it in a different location since it was being beaten up pretty badly. It still works to some extent and there were fewer dead birds or should I say the remains (Continued on page 13)

topics that come up in Johnson’s book. However, as he admits near the start: ‘Such a factfilled and lengthy volume as this is bound to contain errors.’ What I picked up—in Part Eight—was not so much factual errors as a lapse into excessive bias. Here, Johnson slams JFK in a noticeably one-sided manner. He could, admittedly, call attention to something else he stated near the start: ‘The book has new and often trenchant things to say about every aspect and period of America’s past, and I do not seek, as some historians do, to conceal my opinions.’ So be it, and for the most part—though not always—his opinions are congenial to my own viewpoint. I came away from this history with a deepened love and respect for my country. Johnson’s book has drawn my attention to so many things: for example, the religious character of the American Revolution (versus the antireligious character of the French Revolution); or the sheer beauty and size of the land; the many and varied literary accomplishments of Americans; our military might and courage; our tremendous wealth combined with an earnest willingness to aid those in need. Concerning this latter point, Johnson describes President Truman’s push to assist those who were povertystricken elsewhere in the world. Over a $150 billion were directed toward this end. Johnson writes: ‘This effort, in absolute or relative terms and from whatever viewpoint it is regarded, was wholly without precedent in human history, and is likely to remain the biggest single act of national generosity on record.’

John Loranger was born in Butte, Montana in 1961 but has spent most of his life in Nevada. He served in the United States Navy from 1983 to 1987, then worked for the telephone company before retiring in 2011. He has always enjoyed reading fiction and has published two novels of his own: "The Odyssey of Art O'Hara" and "Lions and Souls: the Story of St. Mary of Egypt". His approach to fiction is best summed up by a quote from Walker Percy: "The first rule of thumb, of course, is pleasure. A good book gives the reader pleasure, the sort of deep, abiding pleasure he likes to come back to."

Any one method or training system or do you pull from several sources? Does it depend on the role? character. The first thing I do is read the script, and then I move on to learning my lines. This is an unemotional exercise, and all I want to do is get words in my head. Once I've got that down, and if my role is super-large, I will go through the entire script and make character notes. I will then generally distill a character down into one or two over-arching traits and interpret everything she/it does in terms of those traits. Usually, for some reason, a character's over-arching trait will be love. So you could say that all my human characters, even the most evil ones, are motivated by love. BTS: Any quick audition tips you would like to share, that is, in person or video?

What’s the Story?TM Share it! Page 7

I auditioned on the Monday, and I had a good feeling about it. On Tuesday, I was told that I had booked the job, and on Wednesday, I was rushed into the production offices in Hollywood for a fitting. On Friday, we shot the commercial, and I cannot tell you how exciting it was to be working on exact replicas of the iconic sets from The Shining. Given my lifelong love of horror, I was especially excited, and I COULDN'T BELIEVE IT when I was told that the spot was actually going to air on the drop-down screen in The Dolby Theater during the actual Academy Awards ceremony! We were also told that the spot was actually a highly-stylized commercial for the Academy Museum - remember that

MO: Quick audition tips: learn your lines (very well), know your character, don't be nervous (you WANT to spend your life performing, don't you?), do your best, don't fall on your face! BTS: Now here's a fun question I've never got to ask anyone. What was it like being in an Academy Award / Oscars commercial? Did you have a watch party? C'mon, give all the details, I saw it and recognized you immediately! Congrats BTW!! It was cool! (BTW folks, this was the commercial that looked like the movie "The Shining") MO: THE STORY ABOUT THE SHINING COMMERCIAL:

A few months ago, I submitted for an innocent looking commercial job : Housekeeper wanted for the Overlook Hotel, 50s, severe looking. I noticed the name - Overlook (!) - but never thought anything of it. I was very excited to be called in for an audition - and, while driving to the audition venue, I passed the building that's being constructed to house the Academy Museum, and I marveled at how beautiful it was going to be - and I thoroughly enjoyed auditioning for the spot. I did mention I knew all about Stephen King's The Shining and The Overlook Hotel, and I think my love of horror proved to be a plus!

beautiful building? - and that the director was extremely pleased with how I had performed! After we wrapped, the wait began. I had signed an iron-clad Non-Disclosure Agreement, so I couldn't say a word about the project to anyone! I bit my lip and lived through the next three weeks hoping against hope that the spot would actually air during the televised sections of the ceremony. I mean, if it was shown at the theater during a commercial break on TV, then everyone would see a commercial for Coca-Cola (Continued on page 13)

LeRue Review 3 Chapter View f you’re an author, you may know that, often, publishers request only a few chapters of your book to consider for publishing. If you can wow them in those first pages and chapters, paint a good picture of your characters or in some way, grab them, you might get to the next step in consideration to publish your book.

LeRue is not actively seeking submissions for fiction at this time, but we thought it might be an interesting twist for readers to see how a publisher might view books that are on the market reading just the first 3 chapters. In most cases, these are books that are self-published, but not always. We hope you enjoy reading the “View from LeRue”.

World On Fire by Bill Keuchler The opening chapter of World on Fire begins on September 10, 2218 in the Ural Mountains of Russia. Kuechler does not waste any time getting to the action. In the first few pages, a sleep cloud is dropped from drones and the first assault team is on the move. You meet the Order Preceptor Tatiana Marchenko and her team, learn there is a difference between the Order Controlled World (OCW) and the Order HQ in Shasta. By chapter 3, Kuechler brings the reader to Berkeley, NorCal Region, Federation of American Regions (FAR: former USA) . Kuechler has good pacing and flow and makes it easy for the reader to follow his story. He does an excellent job of making the reader feel like they are in 2218. If LeRue was in the market for this type of novel, we would consider it for publication.

Journey of Togetherness

“Walk the Turtle”

he sensual sound of falling rain along with the distant rumble of thunder fills the darkness inside the deep, late hours of a brand new day, becoming prepared to face the unknown.

Eyes of our mind reside between being awake and a state of sleep as we listen to the intuitive wisdom of our soul, a genuine guidance of love held by the purity of hope is given to our spirit as each morning begins. Music of life surrounds our existence, allow the mind and body to dance with thanksgiving, for we are granted this gift to grow and create among this realm of spiritual beings. A savage heart brings forth the torment to some as a peaceful grace lives inside others, a treatment of patience and compassion can influence all in times of comfort. I did catch a glimpse of The Dolby's stage and the ceremony online, and it was ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I was very excited, absolutely terrified that it wouldn't show on TV and awestruck that all of my heroes and heroines in the industry that were attending the ceremony would see my work. When I got the text that the commercial had been shown on TV during the ceremony, I was absolutely ecstatic! Finally I could tell the world what I had been up to and share the commercial, and my work, with all my family, friends, followers and fans! My Facebook post was instantaneous, and I haven't stopped getting comments on it since. I've also seen that the commercial has gone viral on some site, and horror websites are also picking up the story and running with it. For a horror actress, this was a dream come true! Shirley has teamed up with Comedian/Actor Lance Morrison and Comedian/Producer Drew Howard (Drew Howard Entertainment) to bring together their first official short film. Sprung from the imagination of Lance Morrison, what started as an episode of the

Short Film

“Bengleton Socks” Web TV series, quickly evolved into its own stand-alone film. Drew Howard came aboard and added much depth to his scenes and also pulled in cast member Keith Dee. Then there’s Bill Davis, Larry D Shirley, Sam Shirley, Tamara McClure, Rocky D (who plays 2 characters) and Blair Barna. Music by Veteran Comedian/Actor/ Impressionist, Pete DeLorenzo with his song "They All Remind Me of You" and Veteran Comedian/Musician Charlie Wiener with "Dumb Girl" adds so much to this film.
