MESSAGE FROM OUR

INTERNATIONAL UICH PRESIDENT Dear Colleagues and Friends of Clefs d’Or, My very best wishes from Canada on this 60th Anniversary, a Society that will always embrace the history and traditions of its European roots, but also one that continues to grow and develop with such promise in the newer regions as the Americas, Asia, Middle East, Africa and Oceania. Allow me to present this Special Edition Revue of our 60th Anniversary which is a magnitude project documenting our history. I am so grateful to each and every section for having contributed in sending their history, all 42 sections are present under one cover. The massive history part was composed by the French Section under the Presidency of Lionel Lorans. Merci de tout coeur! Many thanks go to Michael Romei who managed all this project, Emmanuel Vrettos for coordinating the sponsors and Shujaat Khan our hero shipper. We also enter the countdown to the much anticipated 60th International Congress in Queenstown, New Zealand next April. We are filled with joy and optimism about what will be delivered to our colleagues from around the world. Since 1994 when our friends in Australia first hosted an international Virginia Casale congress in that region it has been our desire to return and soon that wish will become reality. President Staufer, his organizing committee and all the members in New Zealand, are showing great courage and determination in preparing for this major event and we are confident that they will rise to the occasion. It is very clear to see that the passion and enthusiasm they are displaying to the world, reflects a new reality for UICH. These different zones have brought a new energy, having participated at the last Asian congress in Hong Kong and the last Pan American congress in Las Vegas. Today I am so honored to announce that for the first time ever, we have a Pan European congress organized in Bucharest, Romania. On behalf of the International Executive of UICH I wish you the very best for your celebrations of these 60 years of Excellence in Service. Les Clefs d’Or stand proud of setting this benchmark of excellence which is being copied by so many industries adopting the word concierge… from the car rental to health care. This reputation of concierge is from Les Clefs d’Or and we must educate the rest of the world of this heritage for the next generations to come. Happy 60th Anniversary in Service through Friendship & Excellence !!! Virgina Casale President UICH, Les Clefs d’Or

MESSAGE FROM OUR

INTERNATIONAL UICH GENERAL SECRETARY This Historical Monument not only allows us to celebrate collectively our 60th Anniversary of UICH but truly examines and shares our very rich and steep history. Recently at our 17th Pan American Congress in Las Vegas we heard a brilliant lecture by Jeff Arnold, Chairman of the Forbes Travel Guide. Mr. Arnold spoke about the importance of social media and technology in our industry, as well as the importance of sharing. "Concierge are born for this, said Mr. Arnold. He said it was even in our DNA!!! In retrospect 60 years ago the headline might have read "Concierge Give Birth to a New Idea" Global Social Networking!! It is an art-form practiced by concierge since the birth of our organization. As we celebrate our 60th Anniversary, we reflect on the time-tested methods of reaching out to our colleagues around the globe, and embrace the technology that enhances what we have already been doing for decades. We have been well ahead of the curve in communicating globally. Perhaps it really is genetic!!! Congratulations and Happy 60th Anniversary to Everyone!!

ON THIS DAY APRIL 25TH 2012…... SIMULTANEOUS SKYPE VIDEO CONFERENCE CALL BETWEEN LAS VEGAS AND CANNES, FRANCE

On this day April 25th 2012 in celebration of our UICH 60th Anniversary. Les Clefs d'Or USA while attending our 17th Pan American Congress in Las Vegas organized the very first and most historical Skype Video Conference Call together with our colleagues in Cannes, France the location of the original 1952 celebration. We were able to raise our glasses and toast together from our morning Las Vegas meeting to their evening dinner celebration in France. Shown in the photos below: The entire LCD USA Board together with International President Virginia Casale, General Secretary Michael Romei, and 3rd VP Simon Thomas. The left photo is most interesting; its actually the photo of us in Las Vegas as viewed from France. This was another truly momentous and historical moment and we wish to thank Mr. Harald Mootz Director of Concierge Relations Les Clefs d'Or USA for his very kind organization together with modern technology.

LES “CLES D’OR” ACTUALITÉ INTERNATIONALE

HISTORY OF UICH 50th anniversary of Les Clefs d'or: the origins of the Concierge Profession in europe By Jean Gillet, Grand Conseiller a Vie and President d'Honneur (translated by Marjorie Silverman and Andre Damonte) After the fall of Napoleon the First in 1815, peace finally returned to Europe. The grandees of the world wanted to discover another country other than their own and thus they created the concept of traveling for pleasure. Great Britain, the great victor of the conflict, the richest power in the world at the time, isolated on her island, furnished a generation of fortunate men and women, who tired of their climate and especially the London fog, went out in search of new horizons. Switzerland, the welcoming country par excellence, offering its magnificent mountains, its lakes and pastoral countryside, was the privileged goal of all these tourists in quest of well-being. Thus, toward the end of the 19th century, Swiss hostelry saw the light of day. The mountain resorts were at the beginning the most sought after. Mountaineering, the Alpine flora, and the snow contributed to their appeal. History tells us that Chandolin, the highest village of Europe, which is inhabited year round, knew its success from butterfly collectors, a sport that appealed especially to the English of this era. The infrastructure of hostelry developed very rapidly to please this clientele. A new profession was created: "the porter of the hotel." His job was to receive the clients in horsedrawn carriages from their arrival at the stations and convey them and their baggage to the hotel. During their stay, the porter was omnipresent to advise and help the guests in all circumstances. He was their secretary, their confidante, and often their friend. And very importantly, at the time, the porter spoke many languages. Thus was born a profession, which is today called concierge "Clefs d'Or.” At the beginning of the 20th century, Swiss hoteliers, fortified by their experience and professionalism, left to conquer new markets. Ritz, Osello, Schwenter, Badrut, Rey, and Crettaz created the grand hotels of London, Paris, Monte Carlo, Rome, and established in their properties "Swiss service" with a concierge and his team at the disposition of the clientele. After the war of 1914, international tourism knew a prodigious expansion. Everywhere in the industry, competent employees were in demand and, of course, the Swiss were highly prized. In 1919, three Valaisan friends decided to leave Switzerland to conquer the world. All three had worked in grand hotels as members of the hall staff and conciergerie. Their objective was London, where the grand palaces were run by Swiss hoteliers. Having arrived in Paris, Ferdinand Gillet decided to stay in the French capital. The other two made their way to London. A few years later, we find: Mr. Meyer, Chef Concierge of the Grosvenor House, London Mr. Clivaz, Chef Concierge of the Cumberland, London Mr. Gillet, Chef Concierge of the Hotel Scribe, Paris Of course, they kept in touch with each other, which benefited their guests. In Paris in 1929, eleven Parisian concierges met to get to know each other and to exchange their knowledge on the profession. After their various meetings, they decided to found a friendly society and gave it a symbolic name: Les Clefs d'Or. A president was chosen: Pierre Quentin, hero of the 1914-18 War and holder of Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur. Franyois de Chaume succeeded Mr. Quentin. Around the year 1935, Ferdinand Gillet, Vice President, decided with his old friends in London to organize a meeting in Le Touquet, which was halfway between London and Paris, so that English and Parisian concierges could get together. This was a success that continued unti1940. After the Second World War in 1945-46, the Clefs d'Or regrouped with strength and vigor. Ferdinand Gillet took over the mantle of President, which was handed to him· by Franyois de Chaume. Ferdinand Gillet, remembering the Franco-English meetings, decided to regroup all the European concierges into national sections, which in turn, would form a great friendly society, Les Clefs d'Or Europeenne. He traveled extensively, visiting the various countries; and was fortunate to find in each country a concierge of great valor in a grand hotel who was enthusiastic about this project. In 1951, at J.C. Bonvin's Hotel du Golf at Crans sur Sierre, Switzerland, he organized a meeting of twelve concierges who decided to create the "Union Europeenne des Portiers des Grands Hotels" UEPGH, which was founded at the Hotel Carlton in Cannes in 1952. This meeting brought together six active countries: Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, Ireland, and Switzerland, plus two additional observers: Belgiumand Denmark, and one guest counuy, Spain. It was a huge success and was welcomed by hoteliers and media alike. The Board was chosen, and Mr. Ferdinand Gillet was elected President. From year to year, the number of national sections increased and contact was maintained by a Congress every year for the men only, because at that time there were no female concierges. In 1967, for health reasons, President Gillet handed over the Presidency to the First Vice-President, Theodor Godde of Germany. Those who knew him will remember him as the epitome of "Le Concierge" (tall, good-looking, with great charm, and speaking 6 or 7 languages). Unfortunately, Mr. Godde died in 1969, and the Presidency was taken over by our great friend Oscar Wirth (Switzerland). His appointment was confirmed at the St. Moritz Congress in 1970. The year 1970 was remarkable for two great events. The first was at the time when the tension between Israel and the Arab countries was most delicate. At the Assembly of the St. Moritz Congress, our friend Mr. Anakar, President of the Moroccan Section, presented our friend Mr. Alfred Kahn, President ofthe Clefs d'Or Israel. This symbolic gesture was widely broadcast by the media, who congratulated the Clefs d'Or on having stronger bonds of friendship than the politicians had. The Assembly changed the name of our friendly association to "Union Intemationale des Portiers de Grands Hotels" UIPGH. Secondly, in October, the death occurred of our founding President, Ferdinand Gillet. All the sections were represented at his funeral to accompany him to his final resting place. After that, the continuation of our friendly meetings contributed to the resplendence of the Clefs d'Or. The important event that took place under my international presidency in 1978 was the acceptance of the USA section, which had a lady, Holly Stiel, as Chef Concierge, assisting President Thomas Wolfe. From then on, it was accepted that women could be good concierges, and I am happy to say that it was under my presidency that ladies were admitted and recognized in Les Clefs d'Or. The future proved my decision to be right, for not only were the ladies extremely charming, but they were also excellent professionals. (I must say that it wasn't easy, for many were against this decision.) The rest you know well. The national sections increased in numbers every year. Our association took on greater and greater importance, but we must never forget that we are all at the service of the tourist and hotel industries, and, more than professional values, we must maintain the fraternal friendship that has allowed us to reach our present position. Finally, I should like to say that I personally am very happy and proud to have been able to continue this ideal of tolerance and peace in the spirit of our predecessors by transmitting our spirit and our values to the younger generation. We are building the future.

The stature and personality of the doorman has always played an essential role in luxury Hotels and the Tourism hospitality business; The continuous care for which the administrative unit and management take to hire a colleague shows the value they consider for this position. The doorman also called concierge brings his contribution in the accomplishment of multiple tasks, which makes him a department head. He knows everything about his company. He is like the central point where all minor or major problems coming from the client converge and need to be solved as quickly as possible without any error. Therefore the skills required are numerous. Good manners, warm welcoming, a good knowledge of foreign languages is essential. Good tourism background, good mail skills, everything regarding travelling by boat, train, plane. These are the basics to which should be added many other skills which make the professional capacity that requires management and clients. Watching the friendly relations between doormen it came clear that expending these relationships could be a plus. The first exchange and cooperation meetings were limited in the beginning and became more and more frequent and fruitful. The enormous evolution in all fields that happened between World War I and World War II including touristic development led to many problems and diversity of the work, which disturbed our traditional job. Therefore it was essential to develop our friendly exchanges.

This idea led to the creation on October 6th 1929 of CLEFS D’OR which was officialized during a ceremony on October 26th at Noel Peters Restaurant, 24 passage des Princes in Paris 2éme, and ratified during our first general assembly which gathered 75 participants on November 27th. 11 Paris Doormen (Pierre Quentin : Hotel Ambassador Paris, N°2. L. Righi : Hotel Royal- Malesherbes Paris, N°3. M. Masson : Hotel unknowed , N°4. J.F. Carrère : Hotel Algéria Algeria, N°5. S. Savi : Hotel Carlton Paris, N°28. J.L. Laurençot : Hotel Windsor Paris, Mr. Teush : hotel unkown) got together and were thrilled to see this project starting. Pierre Quentin became president of this new association for 3 years.

The first head office of the clefs d’or was 7 rue du 29 juillet in Paris and moved in 1932 to 217 rue Saint Honoré (building where Pierre Quentin was living) In 1936 The Clefs d’Or moved to 12 rue Cambon in Paris.

Rapidly we received applications from everywhere. Almost all the Doormen from Luxury hotels became members. The drastic statuses in the selection of the members allowed us to say that they were the elite of the profession. Following the rapid development the original aims became obsolete. The association which had solid basis developed quite rapidly. The orientation was moving towards new creations. Social work, employment and friendship were on the agenda.

During the General Assembly held on October 22nd 1932, Francois Dechaume succeeded to Pierre Quentin During this assembly Pierre Quentin was elected Honorary Member receiving many applauds Francois Dechaume along with all the members brought the energy and dynamism to make the association a prosper one. FRANCE

In 1933, Mr Bertholier one of the founding member retired. Among quite a lot of realizations, The important one was the Professional Directory created in 1930. It was the permanent link between all active, honorary and benefactor Clefs d’Or members, and also an indispensable tourism guide.

1933 and 1934 were rought years due to the world crisis. To keep our treasury we had to decrease the membership fees and find honorary members among our most well-known stores which did not know our association.

In 1935, the touristic season was up in France thanks to Georges V Jubilee in London and the World Expo in Brussels which brought in Europe quite a lot of tourists On October 22nd 1935 Pr Dechaume presented the annual report of the association and the work done during that year. He also presented his resignation as well as the one of his Committee for which the mandate was ending. Unanimously this resignation was refused and they were all reelected. 1936. On that spring the number of tourist seemed even more than 1935 until the June events (June 7th 1936. Agreement under the presidency of Léon Blum, between the Confédération Générale de la Production Française (Managers Union) and Conféderation Générale du Travail (Workers Union) n companies, elected personnel delegates, a salary increase between 7 and 15%. Managers also agreed on paying vacations and time of work was brought to 40 hours per week). From the very beginning the Clefs d’or spent lots of time and energy in order to defend the profession among managers and workers unions. Due to the particular situation of the concierge, his department head role, but also a moral contract with the personnel and the clients the task was quite delicate and difficult Clefs d’Or delegates were recognized by Management Delegation as well as Workers Delegation and they were able to defend Concierge Statuses 1937 was the year of the Paris World Expo. The advertising department of the World expo committee had recognized the Clefs d’or as official delegate between concierges and Foreign Luxury hotels, which generated lots of exchanges. On that year the Belgium Section was created

In 1938 more that 900 000 foreign Tourists came to France. Our provinces and more particularly our touristic regions saw an increase between + 20 and + 50% and this even with the major international events that took place in spring and summer that year which jeopardized peace in Europe. The Clefs d’or kept their good relation with all the international members; that year was also painful with the death of our dear colleague MASSON, treasurer, founding member of our association. This was a great loss.

On October 26th 1938 was held our yearly General Assembly. Our president François Dechaume presented the activity of the association and for the second time tried to resign after 3 additional years as president and once again all the members refused and voted massively for him again as head of the Clef d’or. He was reelected for 3 years as well as the Board members Our annual Gala in the Hotel Lutecia was held on November 5th and was a success. Several important representatives from the Tourism and hospitality business attended our cocktail. Many hotel owners also attended our Gala which proved that our association was well perceived After 10 years of existence our association was proud of the spectacular development but the war started; It was such a sad period for everyone in the association. During that time we tried to help each other as much as we could In the absence of President Dechaume, arrested by the Germans, Ferdinand Gilled took over the presidency and handled everyday tasks.

The war ended.Right away, all the vitality of our association was back. A massive information meeting took place gathering the pioneers, the president, who’s liberation had been a joy for all of us, was present (Francois Dechaume had been arrested on August 27th 1940 and put into Jail in Dijon during 7 weeks, then he was transferred in Germany where he stayed till 1941 in 8 different prisons!). This meeting that was conducted by Vice President Ferdinand GIllet, was aimed to establish the major objectives of our association by servicing the best we could the Hospitality Business but also by keeping the professional advantages of doormen. The schedule of our next general assembly was put decided.

This 1st assembly since 1938 took place on March 30th 1946. After this information meeting it was great to see that our friendship was even more tightened. This was confirmed with the participation of a lot of members from all parts of France bringing all their support. Since 1932 President Dechaume had gathered the trust of all our members. During the 1946 session he explained why he was leaving the profession (During a committee of alertness held on March 14th 1941, President Francois Dechaime suggested to switch our association into a professional union. This project never happened. On December 14th 1941 he stated that his current activities did not correspond to his role as president. The executive committee wanted him to remain President but the entire work load was given to the Vice president Ferdinand Gillet) and therefore his position in the association.

Naturally the assembly choose Ferdinand Gillet, current Vice President as President. He knew that taking over from President Dechaume was a heavy task but he knew that the members trusted him and that he could count on them and the committee. Every one contributed in continuing the development of this prestigious association which had tremendously well started

From now on our statement was: The Clefs d’Or Servicing French Hospitality and Tourism. With method the reorganization was pursued in various fields Contacts were reestablished, reinforced and increased. New members came on a regular basis. Relations with our honorary members and sponsors were never neglected and we were able to publish our directory again.

Relations with our foreign colleagues existed before the war; they were now back on tract and extended. The association had been put to sleep during the war, but now the prestige and authority of the association had for the past 10 years was back.

The important section RIVIERA ( Côte d'Azur: Cannes, Nice, Monte-Carlo, Menton, Saint-Raphaël...). had also merged, when local delegates developed in several regions we were able to gather and create new sections This activity could not be undertaken without lots of energy, good will and belief in this association. The president took an important role of the workload, travelling to prospect in France as well as North Africa and many other countries. Active members of the committee brought their precious support by talking highly of the Clefs d’Or. In the association the development and consolidation of our relationship continued growing with meetings, group meetings outside of Paris. Nevertheless the evolution was oriented towards bigger horizons. The worldwide amazing progresses created new ways of living which influenced Tourism and Hospitality conditions. Our worries to solve new problems, increasing needs, with a growing workload were constant preoccupations for the doorman The association had to coop with these needs has they appeared. Abroad members are more and more, emulation, helping. Groups are created, get organized and meet together. Reports for the president as well as members from their trip abroad show how much the spirit and ideal of the Clefs d’or develops positively.

A network gathering friendship and service joined together several European Countries (France, Germany, Denmark, UK, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Spain).

The 3 important days in Cannes 25,26, 27Th of April 1952 rewarded for all the efforts. Patience and perseverance the members had put together in order to organize this meeting. The delegates came for 9 countries (France, Germany, Denmark, UK, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Spain) They all gathered during the congress and decided to create L’Union Europeenne des Portiers de Grands Hotels (European Union of Luxury hotel doormen), U.E.P.G.H. The statuses were approved by all; It was decided to establish the head office in Paris 12 rue Cambon, Ferdinand Gillet was elected president. The official consecration was sealed by the participation of Mr Viers Delegate of the Tourism office, during the inaugural session and the international Hospitality association was represented by Mr Mero. The later put to the disposal of the organizing committee the Hotel Carlton ballrooms. This wonderful place on the croisette could not have been a better place to become the birthplace of our association. Mr Jean Medecin, Mayor of Nice, Mr Antoni, Mayor of Cannes, Mr G. Olivier General Superintendant of the tourism and information of Monte Carlo as well as many other officials attended our congress which made of this congress a memorable success. The Clefs d’Or became an integral part of the European Union; The basis of U.E.P.G.H. were created, each concierge association had to create and register in each country the section under the name Clef d’or (Les Clefs d’Or Suisse, Le Chiavi d’Oro, Die Goldenen Schlussel E.V. with the same statutes that had been defined during several meetings in 1952. After their registration each country needed to send an official application form to be accepted by UEPGH. With these enlarged basis, the association developed its activity, had new advantages, and better solutions thanks to a more efficient collaboration.

Admission requests started to arrive to the head office of U.E.P.G.H. in June 1952: UK(6-6-1952), Germany (211-1952), Italy (29-11-1952), Switzerland (2-5-1953), Belgium (10- 11-1954), Denmark (1954), Austria (18-9-1954), Sweden (5-5-1956), Ireland (10-4-1960), The Netherlands (1-07- 1960), Norway(3-4-1962), Spain (3-4-1962), Morocco (18-21964), Greece (24-2-1965).

Each active member was automatically integrated in the European Union. Nevertheless the association kept its initial nature, but the increasing interest for this association was positive. An Example of this increasing recognition was the reward given to President Gillet, The Medal of Touristic Merit well deserved with all the personnel investment and indefatigably efforts in favor of our profession, which through our president rewarded the entire profession. Foreign delegates really worked hard and quickly to create national sections, committees according to the statuses and spirit that had been defined in Cannes. The European Union was going to grow as 20 years ago our national association had grown. This evolution kept on increasing rapidly. In December 1953 was held in San Remo le Second International Congress. 172 delegates from 9 countries attended among which 50 French participants from all over the country.

Creation of the International Revue, vote for the Keys, request were sent to our respective government in order to ease our young members foreign travels; these were the major topics discussed along with the planned agenda. These were 3 very positive working days in San Remo.

Feedbacks were very positive only 20 months after the creation of this International Congress and we could measure all that was achieved. Board of director meetings, touristic travels and other events gathered periodically, in various places, Delegates and Members for various countries with a spectacular expansion. In these friendly manners ideas were developed and friendship kept on growing. All this was used in an efficient way to please our clients as we had acquired experience thanks to these exchanges.

In 1954 the International congress was held in Munich, Morocco beginning of 1955 and the Paris Congress at the end of 1955. It must be quoted that this congress was held under the patronage of the tourism General board.

The Clefs d’Or and the organizing committee were able to count on the support of the Councilors of the City of Paris, The Tourism Board and Paris Region. Official organizations, main Luxury hotels and Honorary and Sponsors of the association. Mr Boucoiran, CIO of the Tourism Office attended the congress along with many other influential people. The 250 participants representing 13 countries (Germany, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Italy, Switzerland, UK, Ireland, Austria, France, Sweden, Spain and Morocco) We were all very sensible by the attention that the above people had shown to our association. They were all gathered in the Ambassador, 3 avenue Gabriel in Paris. All the wonderful receptions, apart from the congress meeting, were much appreciated, with on the last day, the Gala of this French Clefs d’or Congress which celebrated on that occasion the 25th Jubilee of our association During that Dinner President Gillet rewarded all our “veterans” Pierre. QUENTIN, François DECHAUME, F. LAURENCOT, S SAVI, C. DUVAL, F.CARRERE, L.SIGAUT. This was done in recognition to all the pioneers of Our association. An additional day allowed all the participants to visit, following an invitation of the Professional Committee of Champagne Vine, all the famous Champagne cellars.

The history of our Association has glorious roots and has been attended during these 60 years by great concierges. In more recent years the Association has found the strength to regenerate after some years during which raged a little adamantine situation. This occurred in conjunction with the Presidency of Giorgio Chiesa that since 1995 it is used in giving the breakthrough and in restoring values of the Italian Les Clefs d’Or. It is so arrived at the dawn of the second millenium with a regenerated and steeped in consideration and virtues that hark back to the profession of the concierge. The route started in 1995 amid many difficulties, obstacles and even violent opposition was led first by Mario Eroico, succeeded in 2001 to Chiesa and today by Federico Barbarossa. These three Presidents, each in his position but united by a single goal, meant that UIPA today can live happy moments of awareness and high regard worldwide.

LES “CLES D’OR” ACTUALITÉ INTERNATIONALE

MEMORIES OF AnDRE DAMOnTE by Marjorie silverman, President d’honneur, UiCh

It was an honor to travel to London to deliver the Eulogy for Andre Damonte at his funeral on March 16, 2012. Assembled were all of the people who meant the most to Andre during his life, his son, Paul, his beloved and beautiful grand daughters, many other family members, the British members of Les Clefs d’Or who were the first to recognize Andre’s leadership abilities and elect him vice-president (1969-1975) and president of the Great Britain section (1976-1981). Four past international presidents represented Les Clefs d’Or, Albert Ostertag, Roger Bastoni, Marjorie Silverman and Robert Watson. Both Roger and Robert in addition to being past presidents had the pleasure of also working with Andre at his concierge desk at The Carlton Tower Hotel. Also present from Holland were Ben Wahlte and Brian MacKenzie and from Hungary, Gyorgy Kalmar. After the funeral the British section under the chairmanship of Simon Thomas organized a beautiful luncheon where we spent a few hours celebrating the life of Andre and what he had meant to each of us. You, fellow members of Les Clefs d’Or from around the world, have written some moving tributes to Andre and these will all become part of his legacy. I have been reflecting on how to memorialize Andre for all of us and in doing so, I will concentrate on two periods in his biography that illustrate his diplomacy, dedication to LCD and his openness to new ideas and acceptance of different cultures. I had the great good fortune to work closely with Andre for two decades, the eighties and the nineties.

In the 1980’s Andre was ascending from 3rd Vice President to President of UIPGH. His incredible language skills made him the great simultaneous language interpreter for Les Clefs d’Or. In the early 80’s, the meetings were conducted in French but we were rapidly accepting countries who were not so bilingual or multi lingual as the Southern European sections and it became Andre’s job to bind us together with diplomacy and fluency in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. The USA was accepted as a member country in 1978. True to our heritage as a rebellious colony, we were quickly set apart as an “outlier section”. Our profile was different. We accepted and promoted women, gays and concierges of all colors and ethnicities and we had a variable workforce in a new profession in the USA with no apprentice system to provide us with skilled staff. It was thought that we needed a “minder” and dear Andre was given that dubious responsibility.

LES “CLES D’OR” ACTUALITÉ INTERNATIONALE

So began his unique collaboration with our section where he was able to successfully understand us and “interpret” us to the top table in Europe. From 1983 to the end of 1998, Andre never missed one of our annual national meetings (all at the same time he was ascending to the presidency and assuming the role of General Secretary for 8 years in the 90’s). He advised us, nurtured us and promoted us to our colleagues around the world. He put us on the Les Clefs d’Or map of the world, as a section worthy of attention and recognition for new ideas, particularly in the areas of management and education. In the USA we referred to Andre as our Godfather and we made him an Honorary member of our section. We were not the only section, Andre took under his wing to tutor—he went on to enable other countries to gain acceptance in Les Clefs d’Or, most notably Singapore, the Philippines, China and India, where he was sent to train at the Oberoi hotels in Mumbai in 1993. In 1992 having finished his duties as President Sortant, he thought that his 10 years at the top table were over and that now retired from his hotel job, he would join his colleagues as President d’Honneur and a member of the Conseil des Sages. Alas, that was not to be as Les Clefs d’Or came calling again. In Marrekech, Morocco at the General Assembly, Andre was asked and accepted the duties of General Secretary, arguably the most arduous job in Les Clefs d’Or. The General Secretary is the communicator for the organization, the nerve center, the person who nurtures new sections, calms new Presidents, often handles the day to day management of the association.

Many in Les Clefs d’Or, who have been there from the beginning have observed that the job was perhaps never better done than in the 90’s when it was done by Andre. Every piece of correspondence was answered immediately, new forms were created, Public Relations information was disseminated. He was on the telephone around the world from morning until night advising, cajoling, fixing, consulting, moderating in French, Arabic, Spanish and English. He brought to the job an energy and intelligence that would be rare in any organization. Many of us looked forward to his well-crafted minutes, his elegant speeches and his diplomatic letters. (This was in the days before email was universally available, facebook, blogs etc.). He served an additional 8 years under four presidents and I am grateful that the last two of those years were under my presidency. For two important decades, Andre was a towering figure in Les Clefs d’Or. He was the heart and soul of the organization and he personified the best that we represented in terms of fine service and professionalism. He was a conciliator and always looked for ways to unite us. For me personally, I enjoyed every minute of my long collaboration with Andre Damonte and I am proud to count him as my friend. Andre learned the Art of the Concierge from our founding fathers and daily in his job he exemplified kindness, grace and fortitude. He taught our culture and values to the younger generations around the world and in so doing he transmitted the ideals of tolerance and peace, the cornerstones of our Les Clefs d’Or spirit. In Andre’s memory, we must continue to build our future. And so we are, by celebrating the life and legacy of Andre Damonte. Salut, dear Andre, Vivrent Les Clefs d’Or.

The Society of the Golden Keys of Great Britain and the Commonwealth is proud to have been one of the founding sections of the UICH, and to have had two of our members become International Presidents, namely Robert Burdeyron from 1972 – 1974, and Andre Damonte from 1989 – 1991. Andre Damonte also held many other positions on the Executive Committee, including General Secretary for many years. Two other International Presidents also have very close links with our section, namely Roger Bastoni, and Robert Watson, having both worked in London. We also supported Singapore until they became a member section in 1986. We have held two International Congresses in 1975 and 2012 and are now one of the largest sections within the UICH, having gone from strength to strength, now with over 300 members. Latterly we have been one of the sections with the most delegates at International Congresses. Following the 2012 Congress, at our 60th Anniversary Cocktail party on 23rd April we donated the entire proceeds of the Bulldog Raffle, over £10000 to Hospitality Action, the Society’s nominated charity.

The German Section has evolved over the years, especially with its continual increase of female members, who have a huge impact on our commitment to service through friendship. One of our major goals is to give each member the opportunity to consistently train and develop themselves to create even more personalized experiences for our guests. We want to detach ourselves from the still existing tarnished reputation of a concierge, by remaining loyal to traditional principles, yet applying modern managing tools. We are proud of who we are and what we do – and we are proud to be part of this international community.

The Irish section was founded in 1952 and has been prominent on the international scene ever since. We have a strong society of over members in the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland combined. We hold a once monthly meeting in one of our member’s hotels and also visit our sponsors on occasion to hold meetings. All meetings are well attended, leading to a "healthy" society. Ireland has hosted three international congresses and Mr Denis O’ Brien of the Shelbourne Hotel served as International president from 2005 to 2007. Each year the Society awards the “Jimmy Connor” award for Concierge of the year at an Annual AGM weekend. The Current President is Mr Martin Mulholland of the Europa Hotel in Belfast. The role of the society is to support our concierge, providing a network of experience and communication. This enable’s our members to perform their roles as outstanding Concierge throughout the country. We strive to promote our organisation to those who are eligible, but also to enlighten our current team of the wonderful friendship that exists with all of our international colleagues. After the success of our first magazine, we begin publishing our second edition, modern and elegant welcoming our excellent relationship with our partners but also by providing background articles about our industry and also on our profession. Our ambition is to not take us too seriously but to focus our organization on friendship and professionalism. Thanks to new generations we try to develop through "work shop" new relations with in the travel industry (eurostar and thalys) as well as with Brussels airline and the airport administration. Our Association was created on November 2003. At the beginning, we were a small group of Concierges who decided to gather in order to build consensus and support each other, exchanging information and knowledge to provide a better service to our guests. Today our Association has experienced an incredible growth. In 2006 we received our first Golden Keys, at the present time we are 27 members. During this time we have accomplished many things: organized a Pan American Congress, won the 2011 Andy Pongco Award, have the recognition of the “Secretary of Tourism” and will also be hosts of the 2015 International Les Clefs D’Or Congress. It is also extremely important for us to help developing the South American Countries such as Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay and soon Ecuador y Venezuela. We are delighted and proud being part of Les Clefs D’Or International and committed to it as we were at the beginning. Happy 60 Anniversary to all!

The roots of the Austrian section go back to the year 1874. The so called „Wiener Hotelportier- und Fremdenführerverein“ was founded with the purpose to create a national network of workers in the hospitality industry. Out of this association Les Clefs d´Or Austria emerged in 1954 to join the UICH the same year. Since then, besides securing the high standards and regulations of the UICH and beeing a productive, active and growing section, one of our major aspects always was the education and training of our future generations. Young people and students are our future and it is our responsibility to involve them in our work and skills to assure the importance of hospitality and service as concierge. These efforts were directed in a complete new sphere in 1990. A simple question was keeping our minds busy for a while already: What can be done to join the past, the present and, most important, the future of our beloved hospitality business and what is the best way to point out the importance of our society and secure the need of a Les Clefs d´Or Concierge in modern times? A congress in Vienna took place in the year 1978, it was opened from the former international President Mr. Adoph Schneider. A group of motivated colleagues came together to reflect on this important question to come up with a simple and great idea. Why not join our respected and well known society of professionals with an institution that trains motivated young individuals. A very fruitful and successful cooperation with the renowned tourism school in Bad Gleichenberg was born. A special concierge training is offered since then and every year we have between 80 and 100 graduates from this course. This school trains our future managers and for us it is essential to give them a feeling for the position of the concierge and what he does for a hotel what cannot be measured in figures. A few years back we extended our program and started a similar cooperation with the Tourism School Semmering and have now well over 100 graduates every year. One of our associations many milestones was definately the 54th International Congress in Vienna from March 18th to 23rd 2007. More than 400 collegues from all over the world joined this congress and the meetings, workshops and the networking will remain in our memories for a very long time. The Austrian section is growing and very active with regular meetings. Due to the high standards of our association we are well respected by the General managers of the hotels as well and we look very positive in a bright future to fulfill our mission “SERVICE THROUGH FRIENDSHIP”.

Czech Republic is rather young section in the field of the society of Les Clefs d’Or. Being established in year 1991 we have been privileged to host the international congress in year 1999, since that time our section participates on international congresses and works very closely with other member countries in Central Europe Zone.

ISRAEL On the 16th of April we gathered members of LCD Israel to celebrate 3 subjects: The new 1st concierge lounge in Israel that was opened at Intercontinental Tel Aviv, to give an honor membership for 2011 to Mr.Avi Varsano, our former LCD Israel president and to commemorate the 60th anniversary of "Les Clefs D'or" Israel. Israel was one of the early members of "Les Clefs D'or" and on this occasion I want to congratulate that this organization will continue to grow and flourish through it's slogan: "In service through friendship". 18 FULL MEMBERS AND 20 ADHERENT MEMBERS The Golden Keys Association of Chinese Taipei was pre-established in 1998. 3 phrases were built in the development of the association, Mr. Pirodon, Former General Manager of the Inter-Continental Hotel Taipei, (Imperial Hotel) who brought new concept while reported to this island; a concierge desk was set up to offer warmest hospitality to travellers who stayed in the hotel. Ms. Jill Wei was the first Chief Concierge at InterContinental Taipei with Mr. Pirodon’s appointment and was honoured as the first key holder in Taiwan after the training in Manila with Mr. Andy Pongco, President of Les Clefs d’Or Asia. To follow with Mr. Pirodon’s development of Concierge, along with the tremendous efforts that Ms. Jill Wei had devoted into, Mr. Andy Pongco was invited to share his experience of development association as such, so that the attention from all the leading hotel Concierge leaders in Taipei was congregated. Soon, a monthly meeting pattern was formed with the content of experience sharing, problem solving and relationship building. The groups of 12 from various hotels are leading members of the committee, demonstrators of “Service through Friendship” and strong support forces to the official establishment of Taiwan Golden Keys Association. To ensure and comply with the legal and the practice, the Ministry of Interior of Republic of China had its governmental recognition positioned in February 2001. Nevertheless, after 5 years striking efforts on earning a worldwide recognition in the Les Clefs d’Or International, the members of committee participated the Asian Congress 2001 in Singapore, World Congress in China 2000, Belgium 2001 and Greek 2002. After, the President of Les Clefs d’Or International, Mr. Aldo Giacamilo, paid his visit and reviewed the association in early December, 2002, Les Clefs d’Or Chinese Taipei was finally and proudly announced later in the International Congress 2003 Biarritz France, as well as the 50 anniversary of the worldwide organization, as the 36 Chapter individually. The Golden Keys Association of Chinese Taipei is convinced that being an individual chapter, members could obtain more efficient information and experience shared throughout the belief and the practice of “Service through Friendship”. Members are not only performing in their daily profession with pride but having the mission and responsibility of keeping up to the progress as a leading group in the hospitality field in Taiwan as well as in the world.

From the start on the Hungarian section was very active, because Andras Gunst, the Founder President set the place for us. As newcomer he wanted to show for the colleagues from 23 countries his organizing talent and the capacity of the team under his leadership. Take in consideration, that Hungary was the first, so named ”socialist country” from behind the “Iron-courtain”, admitted to the family of the-that time- UIPGH. Already after the admission, in 1985, Hungarian Golden Key organized an international “rendez-vous” in Budapest. It was an informal meeting with the new friends who became curious about Hungary. Then in 1987 took place in Budapest a Comité Directeur, that obtained high appreciation among the participants. This introducing process was crowned by the organization of the International Congress in 1988. The echo of that is still in the air and in the heart of those who came this legendary event. During the following years Hungary was always present at the Comité Directeurs, Congresses and took part in the work of different committees concerning e.g. professional education or amendment of the Statues. In the history of the Hungarian Section there is an ever-shining moment at the Congress in Rome ( 1996) Andras Gunst was elected as International President. He obtained the summit of his professional career and at the same time gained reputation for his homeland In Hungary Mr Gunst was followed” in the chair” by Mr Matyas Radich and Mr Laszlo Orosz. The active President is Mr Tamas Ungar. He took over the leading position in 2006. He works a lot for the Association and the members see the benefit sof it : As a result of his activity we can say. that the Hungarian Golden Key is really a friendly cercle that realizes a “social life” within the professional environment and has obtained reputation in so many connecting area, amid the collaborating partners. Beyond managing of the international life of the Hungarian Section, Tamas Ungar is at the same time Director of the Central European Zone of UICH, which give him plenty of tasks. Although Hungary is a small country, its presence and impact in the life and development of UICH was always significant. Hopefully it’s acknowledged in the leading body of our – already worldwide - organization.

Turkey has so much to offer her visitors; breathtaking natural beauties, unique historical and archaeological sites, steadily improving hotel and touristic infrastructure and a tradition of hospitality and competitive prices. Therefore, it is not surprising that this country has recently become one of the world's most popular tourism destinations. Due to Turkey's diverse geography, one can experience four different climates in any one day. The rectangular shaped country is surrounded on three sides by three different seas. Its shores are laced with beaches, bays, coves, ports, islands and peninsulas. The summers are long, lasting as long as eight months in some areas. Turkey is also blessed with majestic mountains and valleys, lakes, rivers, waterfalls and grottoes perfect for winter and summer tourism and sports of all kinds.

The Association “Chaves de Ouro de Portugal” was created in 1971 and joined the U.I.C.H Les Clefs d’Or in 1972. In December 1972 had its first National Congress. The Association promoted 3 International Congresses, the 24th in Lisboa (1976), the 31st in Funchal (1983) and the 57th in Lisboa (2010). During the year of 2011 the benefits for the members have been improved and 4 new departments has been created, the Law Department (supported by 3 lawyers), Training Department, Travel Department (organizing all the trips of the members) and the Communications Department. Our aim is to teach, and show, the passion of “In Service Through Friendship” to the new professional generation.

CURREnT nUMBER OF MEMBERS 16 FULL MEMBERS AND 21 ADHERENT MEMBERS. How it all started On the first day of a seminar in Singapore, Manny Suarez and Claire Cuadrado were introduced as delegates from the Philippines – and they didn’t even know each other! That is how Les Clefs d'Or Philippines started. The seminar was entitled, "A Seminar on the World's Least Known Profession." Held through the auspices of Les Clefs d'Or Singapore, the seminar opened their eyes to the world of conciergerie. On their first day back at work in Manila, they started to compare notes and focused on how to form a local association of concierges.

LES “CLES D’OR” ACTUALITÉ INTERNATIONALE

PHILIPPINES

Except for the 5 star hotels in Manila, no one knew what Concierge is all about. Meetings after meetings, members started to join Manny and Claire. Amongst the first to come in were; Jobel Ramos of the then Hotel Nikko Manila Garden, Robbie Gonzales of The Manila Peninsula, Marc Bernie Corpus of The Mandarin Oriental, Marie Zulueta of Hotel Inter-Continental Manila, Rorie Ylagan of then The Westin Philippine Plaza, Vic Cruz, Roland Diokno, Gina Rivera and Gana of The Manila Hotel and Andy Pongco of then Manila Midtown Ramada Hotel. Thus saw the birth of the "Concierge and Guest Services Association of the Philippines", with the logo resembling very much that of a Swiss bank. In the years that followed, Les Clefs d'Or Philippines would be in talk shows, featured in daily newspapers and magazines. The then member’s high profile made the association members fair game for headhunters. Members have been offered higher positions in the corporate ladder, lucrative positions in tourism related establishments and lately to telecommunications and realty firms. Thus saw the exodus of members to Front Office Managers, Directors of Rooms, Resident Managers and even General Managers in hotels, resorts and country clubs. Upon entering the new millennium, the association had seen 2 unforgettable occasions which would forever shape and mould not just the national association, but also the entire world. From the most memorable 52nd Les Clefs d’Or Congress in Manila, to our beloved Andy’s sudden departure, we are all touched and changed with the turn of events. The three year hiatus after our mentor’s departure indeed has served as a wake up call to all of us. We cannot let andy’s legacy in his home country perish when the rest of the world commemorates his memory every year with none other than the andy Pongco award. The time has come and the time is now. With the zeal of youth infused to the new and growing team, we aim to go forward with dedication to bring forth Andy’s dream into constantreality.

POLAND The Polish Concierge Association, established in 2008, is proud and happy presenting its new official logo introduced right after Poland has become the 43rd country section of the U.I.C.H. “Les Clefs d’Or”. This wonderful success, finally took place at the 59th UICH Congress in London in 2012. Thanks to the unanimous decision of 42 countries, our Polish flag appeared on the International UICH banner. Our most precious memories of the last four years include remarkable friendship shown by the Danish and Hungarian sections, who supported our efforts right from the start. Presidents of these sections paid a friendly visit to Poland in 2009 in order to see the Polish Concierges daily work & to provide us with the perspective into the UICH requirements and rules. In 2010 we had the honor of hosting the UICH Central European Zone Meeting with gala events... ...with official meetings.....and with informal day of sightseeing. All this great adventure started for us in 2008 at the 56th UICH Congress in wonderful Copenhagen, where I first met many of my future Friends. ...and now let me use the opportunity to say thank you in the name of all our Polish members!

LES CLEFS D’OR POLAND

The first congress visited by concierge from Russia was a congress in Rome in 1996 and it was the first brick in creating the Russian chapter. After this congress our “founding father” Eugene Bagdasarov with the great support of the management of the Baltschug Kempinski hotel started the process of getting the legal entity for the Russian chapter and getting an International status. We should say big THANK YOU to Andras Gunst and Hungarian colleagues for the support and guidelines and for accepting first Russian members as affiliated members to their section. Nowadays Russian section is becoming larger and stronger. For the past 3 years we enlarged from 12 members to 37 and more and more youngsters and new concierges are interested in Les Clefs d’Or association in our country and our neighbours from former USSR republics. As of 2012 we have members in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Kyiv and Kazan and we were in contact with concierges from other cities in Russia and Ukraine. In 2011 we were able to host a Zone meeting and in 2012 9 of our active members including President Pavel Nikolaev were present at the London congress as well as our Founder Eugene Bagdasarov and it was the largest representation of our chapter on International congresses ever. As part of our main local activities, oOur members from Kyiv on yearly basis organise charity events for the orphanage “Chebyurshka” and it is noticed and appreciated by local community and authorities; in addition we have monthly training for all concierges (not only for members) in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In April 2012 we had an annual meeting devoted to the celebration of 60th anniversary and a special video was created, which you may see on the Facebook of Les Clefs d’Or Russia.

Service through Friendship reigns supreme in the lion city as Les Clefs d'Or Singapore celebrates its 26th year this 5th of June, 2012. This ever growing chapter of the Society of the Golden Keys welcomes new and promising members from the most sought after hotel properties, island wide. In a most recent gathering of members at the Amara Hotel last 16th of May, 2012, Mr. Jerry Soh, Founding President, re-energized the values and core principles of the organization with the aim to restore the true meaning of the society to its members and highlight the objectives of Les Clefs d'Or. Moving forward, the goal of each member in Singapore is not only to widen their contacts and yearn for continuous learning and improvement, but also to encourage and inspire the younger generation of Concierges by carrying out the DNA of the society with a sense of responsibility to the community and the industry. Believing that the Concierges of today are the leaders of the future, Les Clefs d'Or Singapore builds up with a pursuit to guide and prepare all its members for brighter years to come.
