Recent figures show that more than 4.4 million women are avid golfers - and they're playing more than 60 rounds a year on average. Its aim is to increase the participation of women in golf while benefiting the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign, a nationwide campaign to make women aware of their risk for heart disease -- the number one cause of death among women -- and to take action to reduce that risk. Women have been playing golf at Pinehurst since its first golf course opened in 1898. The Pinehurst Women's North/South Amateur Championship started in 1903 and continues to this day as a leading women's golf event. Special all-women's golf schools are also available.
