Recent figures show that more than 4.4 million women are avid golfers - and they're playing more than 60 rounds a year on average. Women have greatly impacted golf spending in equipment and in travel nationwide, and are garnering a larger market share each year, by using golf to exercise, relax and improve their careers. Encouraging this trend is legendary Pinehurst Resort, which, along with their LPGA pro Donna Andrews, will serve as a host club for Women's Golf Week, June 4-10 featuring free clinics, course instruction and programs on the rules of the game. Andrews, who is helping to organize Women's Golf Week at Pinehurst, says, "Women are playing golf in record numbers and Pinehurst is committed to giving junior girls and women every chance to learn, play and enjoy golf." Women's Golf Week is a collaboration of the top U.S. golf organizations, including the PGA's Play Golf America and the Executive Women's Golf Association. Its aim is to increase the participation of women in golf while benefiting the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign, a nationwide campaign to make women aware of their risk for heart disease -- the number one cause of death among women -- and to take action to reduce that risk. Women have been playing golf at Pinehurst since its first golf course opened in 1898. The Pinehurst Women's North/South Amateur Championship started in 1903 and continues to this day as a leading women's golf event. Special all-women's golf schools are also available. ABOUT DONNA ANDREWS A U.S. Solheim Cup member, Andrews' career highlights as an LPGA Tour player include wins at the PING/Welch's Championship, ShopRite Classic and the Nabisco Dinah Shore.
