SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT PART I The International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City resettles 500 refugees each year. Many of these refugees resettle in South Salt Lake City (SSLC), currently a very industrial and run-down area. In efforts to revive the location and better integrate refugees into the community, this project was organized. Senior class members of the interior design (ID) program at Utah State University (USU) collaborated with the Landscape and Environmental Planning (LAEP) students to propose several new amenities to be incorporated into a final, chosen urban plan. This proposal includes both residential and nonresidential spaces, such as mixed housing units, recreation facilities, restaurants, and so on. MIXED HOUSING For the first portion of the project, teams were organized among the ID students to propose variations of mixed housing units. “The Pines is the housing design my team presented.
B
THE PINES Based off the inspiration of a pine cone, The Pines proposal includes a siteplan that radiates from the center, creating a central area for living, dining, and entertaining. The plan consists of two different building designs with units varying from 640 square feet to 2,800 so that a variety of community members may be attracted.

SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT For the housing units that were designed, students then individually designed three spaces - two residential and one community space of the student’s choice. RESIDENTIAL SPACES The residential areas portray the same unit, one designed for a western (or American) client and the other for an eastern client. Each student was given a typical nationality that would appear in the refugee population of South Salt Lake for their eastern client. The nationality I was given was Burmese. The following includes research images and design inspiration for their living space as well as my design for the same living space for the western client. COMMUNITY SPACE For my community space I wanted to design an area that focused the needs of youth and children. My final design, a playroom, consists of life-size legos, large foam blocks, technology for games, and a snack area for parents and children.

SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT PART II The second portion of the redevelopment project included the organization of teams among ID and LAEP students to help create different options for urban plans. After such collaboration and the process of presentations, one urban plan was chosen for ID students to integrate their projects. This final urban plan, along with the six others that were designed, were then proposed to the city of South Salt Lake. The projects I designed to incorporate into the urban plan include an incubator space, transit center, and bike shop with a terrain park.

SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT iNCUBATOR SPACE An incubator space essentially serves the purpose of a temporary business space, giving community members the opportunity to start their own businesses. The idea is that classes can be given on business fundamentals before and during the operation of a person’s specific business, and once his/her busniess becomes stable, he/she can become independent in running his/her business This is an excellent option especially for refugees who, through this program, can learn market to their skills in turn for a source of income. My design incorporates chain retail stores and restaurants to create balance and stability financially. For the incubator space I wanted to keep a neutral backdrop for the different business that would potentially use the space. I also wanted a contemporary design that was clean, fresh, and light.

SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT TRANSIT CENTER My main inspiration for the transit center was color. I wanted something bright and fun but yet not too overpowering. The main elements I designed to incorporate this idea was colored glass and a bridge. The Transit Center sits along 2100 South in South Salt Lake where the S Line, a major streetcar system of Salt Lake, is proposed to extend.

SSLC REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT MOUNTAIN BIKE SHOP+TERRAIN PARK For my third choice of project, I wanted something that would attract youth and serve as a source of recreation for them. With Utah being a great place for mountain biking, I thought this would be a great opportunity to design a space that would give youth the chance to have a mountain biking experience without the hassle of traveling to a farther away destination. The idea of this retail shop would allow the renting of bikes to customers who may not be able to afford their own bikes. Customers may then use either the rented bikes or their own bikes in the terrain park located adjacent to the rear of the store. The main architectural element I wanted to incorporate into this design was an abstract, sculptural frame surrounding the entrance. Overall, the store has strong elements graphically with a contemporary style.
