The Function of the Museum
The museum has often referred to as the end of painting, as it often contains the artwork
bound behind glass, store away from the outside world however the museum function has always been geared towards building a permanent home for art; a place in which artwork can be harbored. While preservation of artwork can occur out side the gallery as is seen in the frescos of Giotto’s frescoes and Cave paintings that go as far back as 30,000BC with the found in Altimra, the museums main function is to preserve artwork bringing a eternal feel to the piece.
Museum’s, while presenting a safe harbor to store artwork also gives a more exquisite
experience to the piece. They also take advantage and present works of art in an inviting way for the viewer but juxtaposing un-expecting work together as if in a series. My recent visit to the MOMA Abstract expressionist section, I was greeted by Barnet Newman’s Vir Heroicus Sublimus next to Jackson Pollock, Autumn Rhythm. This selection of artwork, which contrasts so much the emotions in which they portray, is a striking and unusual presentation in which the museum effectively captures.
While many have come to question the role of art in society to day, the museum appears
as a grounding force that art is in fact relevant in today’s society. In a world where art has continually taken up different roles, so has the Museum as it continues to be a safe haven for art today. Art is no longer limited to paint and concept but has now taking a new introspects with the incorporation of the rapid changing world of technology. The function of the museum also allows the bridging of transnational gaps, as work with multi cultural background can be stored and kept under one building.
