Apple iLife ’09 session with Dave Mara Contact info. for Dave Mara marra@apple.com www.marrathon.com twitter: marrathon Notes: iLife comes preinstalled on all new macs (since Jan 2009) and includes: Garage Band, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and iWeb. Garage band, iPhoto, and iMovie are software that are meant to be places where you produce content, while iDVD and iWeb are two software programs made for the purpose of sharing the content you produce in other programs. iPhoto ‘09 • Continues to offer the “events” feature which was added in iLife ‘08 o In “events” view, to choose a different key image, scroll the mouse over the event from left to right. Find the image. Rest your mouse on the image you’d like as the key image and hit the spacebar. That image is now the new key image for that event. o In order to view the metadata for an image, choose the photos menu followed by “Show extended info.” • Introduces “faces” which detects faces and begins to name pre-‐detected faces on new images added to iPhoto. Faces will recognize a person’s face despite aging or weight loss/gain. • Introduces “places,” allowing users to sort and store images based on where image was taken, given the camera used has a gps connection and writes the location into the metadata. iPhones have this feature. iMovie ‘09 • New to ’09: Precision editor, Advanced drag and drop, dynamic themes, animated travel maps, video stabilization, and new transitions. • Adjustments made to one video clip can now be edited as a “batch” by selecting the clip with the desired adjustments, copying that clip (ctrl+c or edit>copy). Then select the clip(s) that you would like to apply those adjustments to, and choose “paste adjustments” from the edit menu. Adjustments will be applied to selected clips. • The greenscreen and other features (such as picture over picture) can be enabled through >iMovie >Show advanced tools • iMovie font panel (new work from apple) is customizable through iMovie preferences. Garage Band ‘09 • 65 built-‐in instruments • Can record live instruments and add as track • Allows for up to 64 tracks and music compositions up to 2,000 measures long • Can print out scores

New to iLife ’09: new guitar experience (can plug and play any electric guitar with an adapter), magic garage band jam (automatically adds instruments that sound good with what you are playing), learn to play (embedded lessons on piano and guitar), artist lessons (famous folks teaching you how to play specific “hit” songs). When selecting a project when Garage Band opens initially, choosing one option (songwriting, podcast, instrument, etc.) doesn’t lock you into only that option. Some project settings have unique attributes (e.g. songwriting has provisions for adding text). Demonstrated both software-‐based and hardware-‐based piano. The one hardware piano was a Korg Nano Key which sells for <$50 and had octave control and pitch bend. When creating using apple’s pre-‐loaded loops, the loop choices are reduced based on loops you’ve already chosen. Garage band is set to only allow you to choose things that will “match” your preexisting selections. The option key duplicates a loop.
• iWeb ‘09 • New in ’09: o Added widgets bar (including countdown, etc. includes the option of adding any widget using html). o Facebook notifications o Can upload via FTP o 3 new themes iDVD ‘09 • also has themes like iWeb and iPhoto slideshow • slideshow in iPhoto exports to iDVD
