2021 Begins A New Era of Arms & Armor at Cowan’s and Hindman Cowan’s and Hindman Auctions are pleased to announce a new era in Arms and Armor with the addition of three new arms historians. Tim Carey has been appointed as the new Director and Specialist of the department, while long-time Cowan’s consultant Tim Prince will formally join the team, along with Ashley Hlebinsky, as Senior Specialists. “For the better part of two decades, Cowan’s has been synonymous with Arms and Armor. With the addition of such talented experts, we are reaffirming our commitment to maintaining our position as the industry leader and look forward to expanding the department into new and exciting categories,” said Jay Krehbiel, Hindman’s Chief Executive Officer. Tim Carey is a 40-year veteran of the sporting arms and outdoor recreation industry. Carey joins Cowan’s from Griffin & Howe at Hudson Farms in Andover, NJ where he was responsible for the acquisition, appraisal, and consignment of top-tier firearms consignments from important makers such as James Purdey and Sons of London, Holland and Holland, Boss and Co. David McKay Brown and John Rigby and Co. “My top priority is maintaining the level of excellence that bidders and consignors have come to expect from Cowan’s over the years,” said Carey. “Cowan’s will remain a leader in historic firearms and militaria from the American Revolution, Civil War, the settling of the American West, and beyond. I think our clients will also be excited by some of the new directions we’ll be taking the department in the coming months.” Tim Prince is one of the most widely known and respected experts in the Arms and Armor field. A member of the prestigious American Society of Arms Collectors, Prince has published numerous books on Civil War-era arms and has appeared as a featured appraiser on the popular PBS television series Antiques Roadshow since 2016. Prince’s relationship with Cowan’s also dates back to 2016 when he began cataloguing 19th century and Civil War-era military arms for Cowan’s on a contract basis. During his time at Cowan’s, he has catalogued and evaluated some of the most valuable and unusual pieces handled by the auction house. As Senior Specialist, Prince will help the department locate and solicit collections and consignments as well as increase his involvement in the cataloguing process. “It’s an honor to formally join the Cowan’s and Hindman family,” said Prince. “I look forward to continuing my relationship with all the buyers and consignors I’ve met along the way and look forward to being part of this new chapter.” Ashley Hlebinsky is one of the foremost authorities on firearms history, technology, and culture in the United States. Hlebinsky began her career at the Smithsonian Institution where she simultaneously earned her Master’s in American History with an emphasis on firearms and militaria from the University of Delaware. By 25 years old, Hlebinsky was Curator in charge of the Cody Firearms Museum, one of the largest and most prestigious firearms museums in the United States. Also a member of the American Society of Arms Collectors, Hlebinsky is an author for several popular and academic publications as well as a television personality and producer. “I have been immersed in arms and armor material for over a decade, and I am thrilled to be able to work with Cowan’s and Hindman to help preserve the history and culture of this collecting category,” said Hlebinsky. “It is even more exciting to be part of a passionate team, with such an established presence and proven success in the auction industry.” The Arms and Armor department will continue to operate out of Cowan’s Cincinnati location with all auctions continuing to be held on site.

18 Rare H.E. Dimick of St. Louis Shotgun 10 gauge, 30” barrels, no S/N. Browned Damascus patterned barrels, color casehardened receiver and locks, checkered pistol grip stock with smooth steel buttplate and checkered splinter forend with contrasting tip insert. Side lever action breechloading cartridge shotgun apparently altered from an originally percussion gun with one-piece stock altered to a hinged two-piece stock secured by the break off breech and wedge. Highly figured walnut stock appears to be spliced at the rear of the pistol grip. Rib engraved H.E. Dimick St. Louis Mo, locks engraved with game scenes and marked H.E. Dimick. Horace Dicmick (1809-1873) was major gun maker and retailer in St. Louis ca1849-1873 and was a contemporary of other notable St. Louis gunmakers like the Hawkens and TJ Albright. Dimick firearms from this period are extremely desirable and collectible, and this is a particularly interesting example of Dimick’s work. ex Jim Davis Collection $1,500-2,500
23 Confederate Naval Cutlass by Thomas, Griswold & Co 21” spear point, semi wasp-waisted blade, 26.25” overall length. 5.25” sand cast brass hilt with fish scale patterned grip without rivets and US “drooped wing” Eagle motif cast into the pommel cap on both sides. Blade secured to the hilt with a simple peen at the top of the pommel cap. Sheet brass half-basket guard with rolled edge reinforcement and separately applied brass quillon at top of guard. Blade marked on the reverse in two lines THOMAS GRISWOLD & Co in an arc over NEW-ORLEANS and with the number 8 stamped on the blade at the guard. This scarce Confederate naval cutlass was based upon the US Model 1841 Ames naval cutlass and was produced by the New Orleans firm of Thomas, Griswold & Co which had been the long time fancy goods & military equipment dealers Hyde & Goodrich before the war. Thomas, Griswold & Co produced a wide variety of edged weapons for the Confederate south during their short time in business from the summer of 1861 through the fall of New Orleans on May 1, 1862. Most of the edged weapons, including the naval cutlasses are marked “T.G & Co / N.O” rather than with the full name of the company and the city spelled out. These fully marked examples are quite scarce and desirable. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $3,000-5,000 6

67 Rare LSM Marked Winchester 3rd Model 1866 Musket .44RF, 27” barrel, S/N 33289B (mfg. ca1870). Blued finish, brass frame and furniture, smooth straight-gripped walnut stock with carbine butt and forend secured by two barrel bands. Two-line Winchester barrel address with KING’S IMPROVEMENT marking. 3rd Model block number stamped serial number on triggerguard tang, with matching serial numbers on buttstock and buttplate. Triggerguard tang stamped L.S.M. under lever and 27 C 2 past the lever lock, indicating the musket was proxtpery of the Louisiana State Militia. Equipped with 900-yard ladder rear sight, musket pattern combination front sight/bayonet lug, sling swivels in toe of stock and on upper barrel band. Tap door in butt for cleaning rods, which are missing. The Louisiana State Militia was a post-Civil War, Reconstruction-era state militia force that helped to support the newly installed Republican government that was attempting to establish the rights of free men in Louisiana and integrate them into the general populace and maintain general order within the state. The militia was comprised primarily of freed African American men, serving under white officers. The majority of the men were armed with surplus British Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle Muskets from the Civil War era, which were marked in the same fashion as this gun, with the “LSM” and then rack markings identifying the regimental unit, company and gun number. In addition to the Pattern 1853 Enfields, a few hundred Winchester Model 1866 Muskets were acquired circa 1870-71 for use by the force, like the example here. The LSM was heavily engaged in various skirmishes to support the
Reconstruction government during the early 1870s and were universally despised by the pro-Democratic populace, many of whom were former Confederate soldiers or at least Confederate sympathizers. The heavily disputed state gubernatorial election of 1872 resulted in both the Republican and Democratic candidates declaring victory and the two opposing factions attempting to govern simultaneously. In 1873, major violence broke out at the Colfax Riot (or Massacre) where a large number of the Democratic supporters, primarily former Confederate soldiers, attacked and killed a number of the LSM members. The events came to a head the following year when the Democratic supporters took over the state house, resulting in Battle of Liberty Place (also known as the Battle of Canal Street) where the LSM again clashed with Democratic supporters. In this conflict roughly 300 of the Winchester 1866 muskets were captured by the opposing forces. The insurrection ended when President Grant threatened to put it down by force by sending in Federal troops. After the conclusion of the hostilities the captured arms were returned to the LSM and it appears that at least some were retained as mementos of the turbulent times by some members of the LSM. Today examples of the LSM marked Enfields appear from time to time on the collector market, but the LSM marked 1866 Muskets are a true rarity. A very scarce and historic Winchester musket from the Reconstruction Era, not often found for sale. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $4,000-6,000 VIEW THE COMPLETE CATALOGUE AT COWANS.COM

79 Colt Single Action Army Artillery Revolver Type II .45 Colt, 5.5” barrel, S/N 115340 (mfg. ca1885). Blued and color case hardened finish, smooth walnut one-piece grip. One-line Hartford barrel address, three-date in threeline patent marking on frame, U.S marking on frame. Black powder frame and bullseye ejector rod tip. Matching numbers throughout with the exception of the barrel, which is 120XXX, typical of the “Type II” artillery revolvers that were apparently in nearly unissued condition when they were initially altered from 7.5” to 5.5”, resulting in some being all matching guns and others simply receiving the shortened barrel from another revolver in the same batch, resulting in an all matching gun with a mismatched barrel like this example. Many of these guns were subsequently returned to Colt for refinishing and refurbishment prior to or after the Spanish American War during the late 1890s and early 1900s. It is this cataloger’s belief that this is likely one of those early alteration guns that was in near new condition and that was subsequently returned to Colt for refinishing ca1896-1898. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt letter that confirms the original shipment of the gun to the US Government on September 30, 1885 and later returned to the Colt factory for alteration to “Artillery” configuration. This is a “stock” statement that accompanies almost any M1873 returned to the factory by the government during that period. Revolver retains weak D.F.C. inspections on the bottom of the barrel and on the cylinder, with no inspection on the frame (which is sometimes correct) and with only the enigmatic G on the triggerguard and butt. Extra first two number “11” were added to the last four on the cylinder, likely during refurbishment. Left grip with weak script FH (Frank Heath) cartouche, the correct final inspector for DFC guns in this serial number range. No date is visible or DFC cartouche on the opposing side. A clear block R.A.C. (Rinaldo A. Carr) inspection is present on the base of the grip, the correct re-inspection for a Colt factory refurbished M1873 revolver. The bottom of the grip is also lightly scratch marked: JUNE 1898 / H THOMAS / 4th OVI BAND / Columbus, OH. Harry H Thomas is listed on the roster of the 4th OVI’s band during the Spanish American War. Interestingly while a search of the Springfield Research Service Serial Number books did not find this exact revolver, a number of guns in very close proximity were issued to the 1st US Volunteer Cavalry (The Rough Riders) as well as a couple that went to other OVI regimental bandsmen. The markings could well be legitimate and appear absolutely believable. Includes a Colt factory letter. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $5,000-7,000 VIEW THE COMPLETE CATALOGUE AT COWANS.COM

These incredibly high-quality Sauer & Sohn’s combination hunting guns were ordered by the Luftwaffe circa 1941 for use as survival guns and were delivered in 1941-42 in aluminum transit cases that included a full range of accessories and ammunition. The right shotgun barrel was intended for use with birdshot and 25 of those cartridges were included in the case, while the left barrel was intended for use with Brenneke slugs for use against game, with 20 of those supplied as well. The rifle barrel on the bottom was chambered for the immensely powerful 9.3x74R cartridge, similar to the .375 Nitro Express and more than capable of dealing with most dangerous game. 20 Rifle cartridges were included in the kit as well. The rifles were primarily issued to pilot of Junkers JU-87 Stuka Dive Bombers and Messerschmitt BF-109 Fighters during the North African campaign. While some 5,000 of the guns were ordered most sources note that only 2,456 were delivered, making these a scarce a desirable addition to any advanced collection of World War II German small arms, particularly a collection that centers on the Luftwaffe. The M30 certainly holds the distinction of the being the highest quality and most expensive “survival gun” ever issued in military service. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $6,000-9,000

Equipped with the John Garand designed mount for the M84 telescopic sight, with correctly countersunk screws in the hinge plate. Includes an M84 marked scope S/N 47864 with original eye cup. A 6-53 dated MRT leather cheek rest is attached to the butt and an OD Green web sling is installed. Throat erosion 3.5, muzzle erosion could not be measured due to interference from the flash hider. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $2,500-3,500

241 **German Capture Polish Eagle Radom VIS wz35 Pistol with Shoulder Stock Holster 9mm, 4.6” barrel, S/N 38050. Blued finish, checkered hard rubber FB logo grips. Left side of slide marked in two lines: F.B. RADOM / 1939, followed by the {Polish Eagle} and then VIS-wz 35 / pat. Nr 15567. Matching serial numbers on frame, slide, extractor and mainspring housing. Further disassembly was not performed. Barrel lug numbered 058 and marked with German {Eagle} proof and {Eagle}/623 Waffenampt. The German proved and inspected barrel is technically mismatched but this is not uncommon on early captured Polish pistols that were reinspected. No external Waffenampts are present. Type I with slotted backstrap for shoulder stock, takedown lever and decocker. Tiny Polish Eagle inspection forward of decocker lever and small D/2 in an oval on the left front web of the triggerguard. Pistol is accompanied by a very high quality reproduction shoulder stock/holster combination with storage for 2 magazines. The general belief is that no original VIS 35 stocks exist and that if any do, no more than a few survive. The stock was not technically adopted until 1939 and production may well never have began prior to the German invasion on 1 September 1939. As the stock is not contemporary to the production of the pistol and not original, mating it with the pistol creates a Short Barreled Rifle (SBR) under NFA regulations, so the stock is sold only for display purposes and is not to be connected to the pistol. Includes two magazines, one an apparent Polish production magazine and a second that is {Eagle}/189 inspected on the floor plate and stored in the stock. From the Collection of Charlie Hinton $4,000-6,000
