Too addicted to eat One in five Australians would rather go without food, than be without internet access for a day, according to a study commissioned by Telstra. Anthony More men (24 per cent) than women (19 per cent) said they would prefer to go without food than internet access for a day, with internet out-ranking the mobile phone, pay-TV and clothes shopping as the most essential daily-living tool. The findings have revealed our growing reliance on the internet, with most Australian households hosting at least four internet enabled gadgets, with one in five homes operating all of these gadgets at once.

and relationships. It also becomes a problem when people feel more comfortable with their online friends than their real ones, or they can’t stop themselves from playing games, gambling, or compulsively checking their smartphones, tablets, or other mobile devices.

Internet Addiction, otherwise known as computer addiction, online addiction, or Internet addiction While time spent online can be hugely disorder (IAD), covers a variety of productive, compulsive Internet use can impulse-control problems, including also interfere with a person’s daily life, work, cyber-relationship addiction (eg. social

media addiction), net compulsions (eg. compulsive online gaming), information overload (eg. compulsive web surfing) and computer addiction. The most common of these Internet addictions are net compulsions and cyber-relationship addiction. Many people turn to the Internet in order to manage unpleasant feelings such as stress, loneliness, depression, and anxiety because the internet is an easily accessible outlet. When someone loses themselves online they can temporarily make their feelings such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, depression, and boredom disappear. As much comfort as the Internet can provide, it’s important to remember that there are healthier and more effective ways to keep difficult feelings in check. These may include

exercising, meditating, and practicing simple relaxation techniques. Signs and symptoms of Internet addiction vary from person to person. For example, there are no set hours per day or number of messages sent to indicate an Internet addiction. But some general warning signs that your Internet use may have become a problem are losing track of time online, having trouble completing tasks at work or home, isolation from family and friends, feeling guilty or defensive about your internet use and feeling a sense of euphoria while involved in internet activities. Male Student Advised to Bring Female Date to Formal Anglican Church Grammar School (An all male school in Brisbane’s South) has advised one of their students to bring a female date to the school formal in June despite the student asking to bring a male date.

Headmaster Dr Alan Campbell said that the formal in June was seen as a “social and educational opportunity” for boys to learn how to “mix and mingle” with

“Ladies”. “One student has sought advice on the matter and he was advised that, in keeping with the schools tradition and guidelines around the formal that it was the school’s recommendation and strong preference that they bring a young lady,” he said. The schools policy was first revealed in 2008 when then-Premier Anna Bligh weighed in on the issue, saying that she supported the schools decision to discuss

the issue within it’s community. Queensland’s Anti-Discrimination Commissioner Kevin Cocks said that the school could be open to a discrimination complaint and that he would encourage schools to be accepting. However the school is not alone in it’s policy with Queensland Catholic Education Commission Executive Director Mike Byrne saying that catholic schools were also committed to modelling their behaviors in keeping with the values of the Catholic Church.

nestled into the crust of your favourite Pizza Hut pizza.” Reporters from The Guardian had the privilege, or misfortune, of taste testing the new Pizza Hut crust, and their reviews are basically what we expected: “It tasted exactly like I expected it to taste: like a cheap supreme pizza with a pie tacked on to the end. Not great, not the worst thing I’ve ever eaten, but

evoking enough fond memories of my childhood to go for a second piece. Happy to say I fell for the fad but I won’t be going back for thirds.” The whole experience of the Four’N Twenty Stuffed Crust Pizza is summed up perfectly by one of the reporters, “Should come with a warning: ‘Do not consume while sober.’”

Man Gets Shot and Posts Selfie Before Calling for Help A 20 year-old man who was shot whilst in the middle of a shooting spree in Arizona, decided to take a selfie and post it on Snapchat, before calling an ambulance. Isaac Martinez who works at restaurant Bistro 13 was approached by a gunman that demanded he hand over the keys to his car. “He (the gunman) came in and demanded my keys for a getaway car. Of course I said no, and next was him pulling out a gun and cocking it. Soon as I saw it I started stepping back. And yelled for everyone to step back and get down.” Martinez said. “Next thing I knew I was hitting the ground, got up as fast as I fell, and ran out the back exit.” Martinez added, “At the same time the assailant had started taking off in my chef instructors car. When I saw he had gone. I noticed the cops

and fire trucks down the street and went there.” Before seeking help though, Martinez decided to post a photo of himself to Snapchat, blood staining and dripping from where he had been shot in the shoulder. Martinez didn’t stop there either, he continued documenting his injury and posted another photo of himself in a hospital bed, with his gunshot wound clearly visible. Martinez was very lucky however, the bullet had hit him from behind and went straight through his collar area. Any higher or lower it could have hit an artery or shattered his shoulder blade.

Lamb with a Human Face Blasius Lavrentiev, from the village of Chirka in south-western Russia had been waiting all week for his prized ewe to give birth. He got the shock of his life when he went to check on the newborn lambs to discover that one had a human face. The 45-year-old farmer said, “We had quite a tough winter and when I noticed she was pregnant I was delighted as it meant I would be able to sell the lambs and start making some money again. But when I went down to see how it was going I nearly died from shock when I saw what looked like the hairy face of an old man staring up at me.” Local vet Dorofei Gavrilov said, “From what we can make out the anomaly is a result of the farmer giving the Lambs mother too much vitamin A.” Lavrentiev’s shock turned to delight when he was offered 10 times more the usual price for the lamb from a circus. Several other inquiries have also come since then.

“Whatever has caused it she’s a little beauty and I definitely won’t be selling her for anyone’s dinner table either as the buyers want her on display,” Lavretiev said. It looks like this little lamb is safe from the chopping block.

Kim Kardashian pregnant with baby #2 Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have announced that they are expecting their second child. The news of their pregnancy comes after they were starting to lose hope. “But I do realize I’m going to have to go through the pregnancy again. Mine was a really difficult pregnancy. It’s tough. Of course I want to have another child. We’ll see. I’m going to have one more, and see what it’s like.”

The 34-year-old Keeping Up With the Kardashians stars road to motherhood has been full of problems the second time around. “I grew up with siblings, so if I could just snap my fingers and have four, I would have four,” she said.

“I want a boy and another girl; I want it to start happening straight away. I loved being part of a huge family— and I want that for North. We’d do IVF if nothing happens, but we both want to keep trying naturally,” she said. “A few years ago I was told I could never get pregnant. Three different doctors told me the same thing, which is why I wanted to have my eggs frozen. I was just about to do that when I found out I was pregnant with North.”

However despite their problems, Kardashian and West continued on their quest to conceive and even saw a fertility specialist on multiple occasions. Eventually Kardashian decided to do something different. “I have done everything so perfect to try and get pregnant. I eat differently—no sugar. You can’t dye your hair. Literally, teenagers on, like, meth get pregnant in two seconds,” she joked. “I figured I’m going to do everything that I want to do, and that includes going platinum. Hopefully I will get pregnant doing all the wrong things! I’m totally changing my tactics.” “Actually, the doctor said he thinks I’m having sex too much. He said, ‘One time is more powerful.’ This is, like, way TMI!

So, you know, we’ve tried everything. So now I’m kind of over it. I’m over trying. I’m over over-thinking it, hence why I dyed my hair blond,” she explained. “I’m going to do everything—drinking coffee, eating chocolate. There’s a list of things you shouldn’t be doing and I was perfect for a good eight to 10 months, and now I’m like, ‘I don’t understand, so I’m going to do whatever I want and I’m going to dye my hair platinum.’” The Selfish author also said. “He always said, ‘Trying for Baby No. 2 isn’t as fun as Baby No. 1.’ I did go through a lot with the delivery, and so we faced a couple challenges, but we’re literally trying everything that we can to make it happen.”

Mila Kunis being sued for theft Mila Kunis is being sued by childhood friend and aspiring singer Kristina Karo for allegedly stealing her chicken when they were children. The ‘That 70’s Show’ star is being sued for $5000 by her childhood friend Kristina Karo for allegedly stealing her pet chicken, Doggie, and there’s a small chance that Kunis could be forced to pay up. Doggie mysteriously disappeared one day and Kunis later admitted to stealing her, Karo claims, Kunis said to her: “Kristina, you can have any other chicken as a pet, you have a whole chicken farm.” Karo says the pair were inseperable while growing up in Ukraine, until Kunis allegedly made off with Karo’s chicken, apparently causing the aspiring

singer lifelong emotional trauma that requires psychotherapy. Kunis, now 31, immigrated to the US with her family after the alleged theft and Karo eventually came to terms with the devastating loss of her pet, however Karo claims therapy and a little compensation for the pain and suffering, totalling $5000, should fix her up. The outrageous lawsuit outlines how the alleged crime 25 years ago is preventing Karo from “pursing the American dream”. So far, that dream has amounted to the recording of a single titled “Give Me Green Card”.

The Reinvention of Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber is making all efforts to let his fans know that he’s changed. He has spent the last two months on a campaign to change his public image and break away from the reputation he had created for himself. overshadowed his career and made headlines instead. After four years, the relationship ended and this gave Bieber’s team a great opportunity to change the public’s focus from the relationship and back to his music. One source said, “It’s good that she isn’t around, he can be taken more seriously. That’s what everyone wants. Being in the headlines for your love life is distracting to the actual product.” After eighteen months in the spotlight, Bieber’s team decided to impose a total media blackout. Bieber was fast becoming disliked for his antics and his team had to do something about it, and fast. “They decided to take him out of the limelight for a bit,” says a source. “Purposely giving the public some space. He was overexposed. The time also allowed Justin to do some intense soul searching.”

Bieber’s team gave him an ultimatum at the end of last fall; they gave him the option to change his behaviour or raised the very real possibility that he might get dumped by his record label. “It was an intervention of sorts” said an insider, “They knew the only way to fix things was to threaten to take it all away.”

The insider also added, “They had had enough of all his ridiculousness. They told him his record company was in danger of dropping him. It was an ultimatum. His behaviour had become unacceptable.” With the threat of being dumped by his record label, Bieber was left with no option but to change. When Bieber and Selena

Gomez first started dating, they kept their relationship very secret for a long time. This is a trick used by many teen heartthrobs, the aim being that they are more marketable and popular if they are perceived by their fans as being single. When Bieber and Gomez’s relationship was starting to no longer be a secret, this

Bieber’s circus was now finally over. Without the daily headlines of Bieber pictured getting up to no good, there were no more stories for the tabloids to cover. With Bieber now out of the headlines and consequently out of the publics’ consciousness, this gave his team time to devise a plan as to how they were going to

reintroduce him to the world. To turn his bad reputation around Bieber had to remind the public that he was a likeable guy; he had to remind them that he was the same sweet Canadian You-tube star. His team decided the best thing would be to put him on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, unfortunately the pressure got too much for the singer, he looked nervous and inauthentic. It was a failure. Later that night, Bieber struck gold when he recorded a heartfelt confession speech into his phone, and the speech came across as honest. He recorded in a soft voice, “I was not who I was pretending to be…We often pretend to be something we’re not as a cover up of what we’re truly feeling inside and there was a lot of feelings going on in there, just being young and growing up in this business is hard, growing up in general is hard…I really want people to know how much I care, how much I care about people…” The truth is the transition from child star to adulthood can be a rocky road, look at what happened to Britney Spears. However there is no doubt Bieber possesses more than enough talent to last a long time in the public eye.

Why Sia hides her face Australian singer Sia Furler has been hiding her face for years; she sat down with Sunrise recently and opened up about why she shuns the spotlight. Sia performed her hit single Chandelier live in the Sunrise studio wearing a multicoloured tinsel headpiece which almost concealed her whole face, and a Kimono-like gown that covered her from head to toe. Co-host Samantha Armytage asked her why she still shuns the spotlight and chooses to wear a wig in public, Sia’s response was. “Because it’s ugly, it makes me feel hunted. You feel like prey and they’re the predator and you’re being hunted…You go into fight of flight. Would you like to spend your life feeling like prey? Probably not.” The 39-year-old singer also described celebrity attention as “unpleasant”, and that she only ever wanted a “regular life” while doing what she loves and making music. “It’s just like wanting to have a regular life just like a regular person and still be able to make

www.xceler8news.com

music and sing … but without having to sacrifice just having a regular life, that’s all.” Sia said. Sia is constantly asked why she chooses to cover up. She addressed the topic after dropping her music video for Chandelier. “I don’t want to be famous, or recognisable,” she told Chris Connelly on Nightline last year. “I don’t want to be critiqued about the way that I look on the internet. I’ve been writing pop songs for

pop stars now for a couple of years and I’ve become friends with them and see what their life is like and that’s not something I want.” The Grammy-nominated artist also added, “I was at Target the other day buying a hose and nobody recognised me and my song was on the radio. And I thought, ‘Okay, this experiment is working’.”

Selfie payment technology

Dallas Buyers Club asks pirates to name a price for illegal downloads The film studio behind the movie Dallas Buyers Club has been reportedly sending letters to alleged pirates in Singapore asking them to name their price for illegally downloading the movie.

“Using on-line payments to buy things is always a big headache,” Ma said. “You forget your password; you worry about security. Today we’ll show you a new technology, how people in the future will buy things online.” Ma demonstrated the technology by purchasing a souvenir stamp from Alibaba’s e-commerce site and announced, “In six days this stamp will be delivered to the office of the Mayor of Hanover.” So in the very near future we may not need our wallets to pay for anything, taking a selfie might be all that’s required.

Dallas Buyers Club LLC sent letters to 77 customers of Singaporean internet service provider, M1, which they alleged downloaded the movie illegally. They gave the alleged pirates just three days to respond with a written monetary offer of compensation, they also demanded they delete and stop using any unlicensed versions of the film still in their possession. The lawyer acting for the studio in Singapore, Robert Raj, has said that his client has not demanded any specific sum for damages from the alleged pirates in the letters, but confirmed it has received and accepted “quite a number” of written offers. This news follows a successful court order for Dallas Buyers Club LLC to obtain contact details of alleged pirates from the ISP in Singapore. In Australia, Dallas Buyers Club LLC won an injunction to order several Australian internet service providers, including iiNet, to hand over

the identities and residential addresses of 4726 account holders whose internet connections were allegedly used to share the film. However the judge placed a number of restrictions on what Dallas Buyers Club LLC could do with the information. Justice Nye Perram ordered that any letters sent to alleged illicit pirates must first be seen by him. He said this would “prevent speculative invoicing”, which may not be lawful in Australia. He has also ordered that the privacy of individuals is to be protected, meaning that the identity of the alleged pirates cannot be disclosed by Dallas Buyers Club LLC. University of Sydney Associate Professor Kimberlee Weatherall, who specialises in copyright law, said what Dallas Buyers Club could do in Australia would depend on Justice Perram’s judgment.

A 12-year-old boy has been left with horrific injuries to his face after a mobile phone he was using exploded. When the battery started to run out of power, Fang placed the phone on charge so he could continue to use it.

The founder of Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba, Jack Ma, unveiled a new e-payment system called ‘Smile to Pay’ at the CeBIT IT fair in Germany on Wednesday. The technology uses facial recognition software from a Smart-phone camera as a digital signature and a spokesperson for Alibaba said that the Chinese company was quite serious about developing the technology. ‘Smile to Pay’ will be first launched in China, before slowly being rolled out to other countries.

To notify you of a phone call for example you could set the ring to buzz

four times and flash red, for an e-mail you could set the ring to vibrate once and flash blue. The ringly is water resistant and has the ability to work with iPhone and androids. It is also claimed to be very responsive and often buzzes before a competing smart watch. The ringly also comes in a wide variety of gemstone choices so personalisation is high on the company’s priority list. However the ringly cannot be resized so when picking one, customers will have to choose carefully. The battery also lasts for one day and the ring must be recharged nightly via its ring box, which contains two small metal connectors and a Micro USB power connection on the back.

“I realised it was getting warm, but didn’t think anything of it,” he said. “When I had it to my ear it suddenly exploded. Afterwards, I realised I was bleeding heavily and clutched at my face.” Both the boy’s parents were at work, so he calmly called an ambulance and was taken to hospital. His father, was quickly notified and rushed to the hospital with his wife. “He looked a terrible mess. There was a huge hole in his cheek and you could see his jawbone,” he said. “He had burns and cuts on his hands, arms and legs. The wound on his face alone was 4cm long.” Police confirmed that the mobile phone was an older model that had been extensively used. “We believe that the battery was defective, there was a short circuit, or the phone was not being properly charged. But we are still carrying out tests,” investigator Jian Shen said. .

French Tourists Charged with burning a Quokka Two French tourists have been charged with animal cruelty after allegedly trying to burn a quokka on Rottnest Island, off Perth in April. Police allege that two French tourists attempted to burn a quokka by igniting an aerosol spray with a lighter. The marsupial survived but was singed in the incident. Detectives questioned the two men on Rottnest Island the following day, and seized video evidence. Police said both men were evicted from the island and have each been charged with a count of animal cruelty. The video of the incident will not be released to the public. Quokkas are small, endangered marsupials protected under state and federal legislation. They are found exclusively on Rottnest Island.

SunSwift is a not-for-profit, entirely student-led organisation and the team rely on donations and sponsorships to continue operating. They hope to finish the car by July.

This isn’t the first incident where quokkas have been mistreated, in February, five quokkas were found dead and their heads had been stuffed into plant protectors. The Western Force rugby club also fined two of its players after mishandling quokkas on the island in 2007.

Educational book causes a stir

An educational book about how a baby is conceived, which was made in 1975, has been doing its rounds on the internet and causing a stir. How a Baby is Made was written by Danish author Per Holm Knudsen, and goes into a lot of detail about the baby-making process. It starts off when a man meets a woman, then goes onto conception, and finishes with the actual birth. The book started causing a stir when Crysta-Mai Elassaad shared photos of the book on Facebook. After 160,000 shares, a large number of adults who know exactly how a baby is made were calling the book everything from absolutely hilarious, to creepy, to even traumatising, all thanks to the book’s rather graphic cartoon illustrations. The information the book provides is actually very accurate, but the picture that’s really freaking people out is that of the baby being born. What’s also bizarre is that the book has been selling on Amazon for as much as $612.

Teen Cannabis use Causes Long-Term Memory Loss A recent study has suggested that Teenagers who use cannabis heavily can suffer brain damage leading to long-term memory loss as an adult.

Professor John Csernansky, from Northwestern University in the U.S. co-led the study and said, “The memory processes that appear to be affected by cannabis are ones that we use every day to solve common problems and to sustain our relationships with friends and family.” People in their early 20’s who used cannabis heavily in their teens were found to have an abnormally shaped hippocampus, the region of the brain vital to memory. The study, is one of the first to suggest that, that particular region of the brain is shaped

differently in heavy cannabis users. This altered shape is related directly to memory impairment. A total of 97 individuals took part in the study and each undertook MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans of their brains, the scientists then used new computer software to fine-map the scans. The participants also undertook narrative memory testing in which they listened to a series of stories for one minute, and then had to recall as much content that they could remember approximately 30 minutes later. Prior research by the same team has also linked bad short-term memory to abnormalities in other parts of the brain, namely the striatum, globus pallidus and thalamus. SPORTS DRINKS NO BETTER THAN A CAN OF COKE Sports drinks are popular with active young people, but research has shown that one bottle is as sugary as a can of coke and it would take an hour of high-intensity exercise to burn off the kilojoules it contains. The Checkout, on ABC, examine the claims made by the multibilliondollar industry and the truth about their products. “I was surprised at just how aggressive the marketing was and how long it’s been going on,” Ben Jenkins from ABC’s The Checkout said, “It uses spurious science and makes claims about endurance.” Gatorade advertisements back in the 1960’s made the claim that the drink would get into your system “approximately 12 times faster than water.” Sports Drink companies don’t focus their advertising on hydration as much anymore, because of a crackdown on products. The Australian Dental Association has said that ingesting acidic drinks after exercise poses a high risk of dental erosion. In response to this Gatorade made the bizarre suggestion that consumers should use a squeezy bottle to ensure the drink doesn’t touch their teeth. While Powerade made an even more bizarre suggestion that people should minimise contact time by “swallowing immediately and rinsing your mouth with water regularly”.

Many sports drinks have extreme marketing strategies, their advertising appears at major sporting events, they sponsor sporting teams, and in Gatorade’s case, even sponsoring the Australian Institute of Sport’s fluid intake guide.
