When We Give God Our Dreams
KATE HARRELL
EDITOR – PIEDMONT CHRISTIAN NEWS June 26th marks a decision that will continue to transform the face of this nation for our children and grandchildren. We are still on the front-lines of a very real and explosive battlefield that is only just igniting. Commenting on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to make same-sex marriage a constitutional right, Pastor Robert Jeffress (FoxNews. com) predicts the floodgates have officially opened on lawsuits involving christian colleges and predictably, churches. “Once you enshrine gay marriage as a civil right, which is what the court did today, then anyone who opposes gay marriage will be guilty of a civil rights violation,” Jeffress added. At this point, the public doesn’t know what to be more frustrated over- the court’s decision, or their disregard of the state’s constitutional right to determine marriage laws. The case in point is, the Court may have decided a legality, but

WHAT IS F3?
F3 is Fitness Felloship and Faith. Founded in Charlotte, our mission is to plant, grow and serve small workout groups for the invigoration of male community leadership. We do that based on following the recipe of three major components: Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith.
FITNESS
Open to men of all ages and fitness levels, F3 workouts are fashioned in a way to keep the group together, while pushing individuals to operate at their maximum level. Our model of rotating leaders keeps the group, also known as the PAX, challenged with new exercises and training. A varied workout keeps the PAX in supreme continued on page 5
Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 ESV Sometimes God sees you in your wilderness and does a new thing that you were totally not expecting. Those dreams He placed in your heart as a five year old may still come true after all…. From the time I was a little girl, I dreamed of owning a store. I would set up shop in my bedroom and advertise to the rest of the house. I was growing up in a Christian home that was nestled on my grandparents’ farm just outside of Raleigh, NC. I grew up loving Jesus and gave my life to Him in a Baptist church at the age of nine. I was sold out for Jesus and would share Him with anyone I knew. Music was an important part of my life. God also gifted me with a brain that loved chemistry, physics, and math, just as much as I loved literature and music. Perhaps this lethal combination of being technical AND artsy led to me turning away from God…. continued on pg. 4

A Word from the Publisher TONY HARRELL,
PIEDMONT CHRISTIAN NEWS As we all probably have over the last few days, I’ve spent a good bit of time seeking Gods guidance as to how I should react and respond to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the 26th of last month. As usual, the answer I was seeking didn’t expose itself in a thunderous fashion. I am beginning to learn that seeking God’s will is very much a practice in perceiving something familiar, differently. Rarely, if ever for me, does God provide an earth shattering epiphany. Which leads me to my conclusions on this issue. For us as Christians, what really changed on the 26th of June 2015? Did God speak down from the heavens and concede His inaccuracy? “Oops, my mistake guys, I was wrong about this one. I sure am glad I created you folks to hold me accountable!” Not exactly the way it went down is it? Man has always made an effort to justify his sin, and not just those of the homosexual lifestyle, all men, all sin. Frankly, it happens every day, and by far more than nine Justices. We all want to feel good about who we are, sin or no sin. Yes, this was a monumental decision for our nation, and we most certainly will feel the effects and witness changes due to this Court’s opinion, but it was just that, the opinion of nine mortals. Through my searching, I came to the conclusion that nothing was any different on the 27th of June than it was on the 25th of June. God is still God, sin is still sin, right is still right, and wrong is still wrong. Man still has a desire to justify his sin, and Scripture is still here to remind us we can’t. As for me and my family, we will continue to define God, sin, right and wrong as they are defined by the dictates of Scripture. I will continue to raise my children in a home that adheres to Scripture, and sees it as the ultimate authority on truth, and I will teach them to recognize any deviation from that truth. I will continue to plead for God’s grace and forgiveness of my sin, before praying that someone else recognize their own, but I will continue to pray for both. I will continue to love my fellow man, regardless of the sin in their lives, lest I never be loved due to the sin in mine. I will continue to pray that we recognize the arrogant stance we as a nation take when we even refer to an earthly court as being the SUPREME Court. Yes, we will all need to adjust to the coming changes, but just as I did everyday prior to the 26th of June, I continue to pray that we never acclimate to an environment of sin- any sin. I came across a simple little line the other day that put it all in perspective for me, and it read like this: SPOILER ALERT: God wins!

WHEN WE GIVE GOD OUR DREAMS continued from page 1
In 1994 I graduated with a B.S. in Textile Materials Science and entered Graduate School in the same major with minors in Economics and Psychology. By this time, I was also unfortunately “majoring” in boys, alcohol, and partying. There are literally moments of my life that I don’t remember….I had been given SO much, and I was throwing it all away. I met my future husband while in graduate school. He was not a believer and had barely ever attended church. And obviously, I wasn’t walking with the Lord as I once had. With only one semester of graduate school left, I dropped out and Chas and I were soon married. And it was not “happily married” for at least the first 8 years. We did everything we could to destroy our marriage because, obviously, we had not invited God to be a part of it. BUT GOD kept us together, kept us from killing each other, and kept us from talking about our problems with others. In the eyes of the world, we were both hugely successful in the corporate world. God moved us to Rockingham County where we both found lucrative jobs and moved up the ladder. We had everything but the One thing we needed… I had lots of time alone in the car to think and to listen. And God was talking. He was telling me to get back to church, and more importantly, to Him. My upbringing was coming back to me.
Train up a child in the way he should go, And when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 NKJV This verse doesn’t say that we will not EVER leave what we have learned. And I was coming back and going to bring my husband with me. We started attending church, Chas got saved, and life started to become different. Over a period of weeks, I felt God telling me to quit my career. I approached my husband who was in shock. He reminded me of the bills we had to pay and the serious debt we had. So, I prayed and prayed hard. And Chas’s heart softened. He told me I needed to do what God was telling me. After eight years of being on the road and working out of my home office, I asked for my first face to
face meeting with my boss. He was a very tough, regimented boss, but a believer. I talked to him for a few minutes about things that concerned me in the company and then I handed him my resignation letter. What happened next totally caught me off guard. He begged me to stay for at least 6 months to help find and train a replacement. And he offered to continue my pay and let me work just two days a week. This would free me up to start volunteering at church immediately. I prayed about it with my husband over the weekend and took his offer. And in those 6 months, we got out of debt. Six months later, my husband walked away from his career and joined me. After a few years of serving on staff at a church, we left and went on the road. We traveled throughout the southeast helping churches with administrative and marketing needs. Then, God called my husband to plant a church in Greensboro. Calvary Chapel Greensboro is a wonderful place of come-as-you are people, contemporary worship, and verse-by-verse solid teaching. That meant I became a pastor’s wife. Wow. Didn’t see that coming. Lots of work there including, up fitting a building, counseling, playing piano for worship, leading a ladies’ Bible study, and supporting my husband. Then I started using my hands and my artsy side. And collecting vintage. I started participating in craft shows and renting spaces in antique malls. Then one day, I was in the little town of Madison, NC where our “careers” had started. After having a doctor’s appointment, I was looking for a little consignment store in downtown. The building they had been in for years was full of primitive antiques with a little “for sale by owner” sign in the window. My husband called to see what I was doing and I told him about the store. I had no idea what God was working on….. We have held investment properties for several years and my husband informs me that this very day, we had gone under contract on an apartment complex. We would need another investment property very soon. My heart was flooded with emotion. I had tucked that little
girl’s dream so far away, but it was still there…..
Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. Psalm 37:4 NKJV We called the number on the sign and got a voice mail which opened with John 3:16. When we met with the owner, he dropped the price LOWER than what we were planning to offer. And then we stood in this 95 year old building and prayed. We went under contract and were given a key before we closed so we could start cleaning, measuring, and planning for artists and collectors. The day we closed on the property, we prayed in the lawyer’s office. How often does that happen?? It took a few weeks to get things ready. We would be in the store late at night and folks would drop by and share their testimonies. We often heard “I have no idea why I’m sharing this,” but I knew. God gave me my dream so He could get the glory. He reminded me of this through each testimony I heard. We opened just before Thanksgiving in 2013. I started a weekly ladies’ Bible study in April of 2014. Several ladies come each week and one grandmother has given her life to the Lord that had never even opened a Bible. People come in throughout the week that are beat up and broken. It is an honor to stop whatever I am doing, lay a hand on their shoulder and PRAY. While I love to receive compliments on the art and vintage collectibles in the store, the biggest compliment I have received has been from multiple people telling me that Jesus is in this place. As long as I am here, He is welcome. And He will get the glory. He made this all possible. He gave me brains to get an education which gave me a great career and enabled me to get out of debt when He called me. And after all those years of finally realizing that it is all about HIM, He gave me the desire of my heart that I had as a five year old little girl in her bedroom.
And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Romans 8:28 NKJV And, oh, how I love HIM.

All workouts are led outdoors in public venues and require no other equipment than your body. This component of the program addresses the human need for spiritual fulfillment and the attitude of the PAX focus on gratitude.

“F3 Greensboro began on October 11, 2014 with one Saturday morning workout and since then we’ve had around 260 guys workout with us at least once. Now we have 9 different workouts spread over 5 different mornings throughout the week. Some guys come every day, some once or twice a week. I am guessing we are currently averaging about 70-100 men working out together throughout the week.” - Paul Wingate (Wojo), F3 Greensboro

Spiritual Parenting
BY: NATE KINGSBURY LEAD PASTOR – SHADY GROVE WESLEYAN CHURCH
BY: MATT RICHARDS FAMILY/CHILDREN’S MINISTER, FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH
Luke 15:28-32
Growing up as a pastor’s kid, I saw some things that almost made me not want to be a pastor: regular church attenders getting upset over the color of the carpet; church families being upset on who my parents went out to eat with on Sunday night after church; the church board frustrated on how much money was spent on the bus NATE KINGSBURY ministry to reach kids in our community that needed Jesus.
Don’t misunderstand my article, I love the church and believe it’s the hope for the world, but it can also be the most hurtful places in the world. Many times, we can’t see the good that is happening in the church or the way the Holy Spirit is moving because we are majoring on the minors, instead of seeing the amazing way God is working.
days and Thursdays each week, with students completing their teacherdirected work at home on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. We will offer Kindergarten-3rd grade for the 20152016 school year. Lucie Anderson,

I watched my Dad’s heart be broken by the Church, and their desire to look inward instead of outward. It’s not just pastors who gets hurt, people get hurt in church everyday, and many times they never come back because of it. Many of us in the church have to wake up to the harm we may be causing.
A University-Model School to Launch The Covenant School, a classical University-Model School is opening in Greensboro in September 2015. The Covenant School will meet at our central campus located at Westminster Presbyterian Church on Tues-
tary students attend school (central classroom) two days a week and are in their home (satellite classroom) three days a week.

In the story of “the prodigal son”, we put most of our attention on the Prodigal, but what about the older brother? He did everything that was right- to honor, respect and obey the father. Scripture says the older son was upset when the wild son came home. The older son had every right to be bothered, but it was sad that he didn’t show up to the party. Instead, he was frustrated, angry, selfish and could only see the flaws of his wild brother, rather than seeing his own
self-righteousness that lived inside of him. The older son allowed bitterness to rule his life and could not forgive the wild son for his reckless living and the pain he had caused his father. You see, the wild son confessed. He came home to the father. He humbled himself and came clean and longed to just be one of his fathers servants. He realized the messes he had caused. The older son could not see the bigger picture or recognize the transforming power that repentance had brought to the son and to the father. So how about you? Are you the older brother who is too caught up in self-righteous that you can’t see the sin that exists in you? Listen Church, we can’t point our fingers, judge, gossip and claim to be a Christ follower and be the church. If we are not careful, we may be unable to see the sin that lives in us. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? Matthew 7:3 You may have done everything right and can’t see your wrong, but please don’t miss the party. Open your eyes to the good work the Lord is doing. Don’t allow bitterness to eat away at your insides to where you don’t see the work of Jesus Christ that is happening right before your eyes. Don’t allow self-righteous to blind you from seeing the big picture. Learn a lesson from the father who runs to his son with his arms open wide, willing to forgive and accept him back, not as a servant, but as his son. Make a choice today to be like the father, with your arms open wide with much love, forgiveness and mercy to extend.
Storytelling
I love sitting next to a fire and watching the flames dance around. However, what I love even more are the stories that are MATT RICHARDS told when people are sitting around a fire. Maybe it’s the shape of a circle around the fire that creates intimacy. Maybe it’s seeing the flames in the contrast of a dark starry night. As those flames rise, so do our stories, about the past, about family and ultimately about our Creator. I think the art of storytelling is fading, just like a fire does when you don’t keep adding wood. Reading is Fundamental recently posted results to a survey that state that 1 in 3 parents of children ages eight and under read stories to their kids each night. As kids are younger, they learn what storytelling is through the books that are read to them. Not only does this have implication on their educational growth, but also their spiritual growth as we are not taking full advantage of this precious time in our day. There is something so intimate and precious about entering a child’s room that gives a parent a chance to have a personal discussion with a child on their turf. As Spiritual Parents, we should take this time before bed to tell the story of God to our children, which I believe is the most important role we have. When our kids are younger, it shows them how God has been moving throughout history. As our kids
grow older and move up through elementary school and into middle and high school, those stories should take on a more personal style as we also begin to share how God is working in our lives; that is the true essence of Spiritual Parenting. So when our kids are ready to move into this world on their own, they have a perspective that God has moved throughout the course of history and is still moving today because they have heard the story and also seen and heard it lived out in our lives. When the story of God is told this way, it shows how God redeems the world and redeems us. It tells the story of salvation through Jesus Christ for all mankind and for us. It’s a story that uses sinners across time to accomplish God’s narrative, not our own, which brings us all hope that God can use any of us. And most importantly, it shows our children, and reminds us, how we have been inserted into His story through grace, creating a unique chapter we need to tell for the glory of God. So I encourage you this month, to turn the TV or electronic devices off a few minutes early and do some storytelling. If your kids are younger, read them some classic Bible stories. If your children are older, read the Bible with them and talk about how God is moving in your life. Or even take it one step further, build a fire outside or turn on the fireplace and see how the Holy Spirit works as you watch the flames dance around.

Change BY: BRUCE BOYER KERNERSVILLE The rose garden in the backyard was in need of replacement. It was old and worn out. We dug up the BRUCE BOYER dead roses and removed the large section of red brick rocks that the roses bordered. Below those red brick pieces, the clay soil below had become packed down and hardened over time. After tilling the clay we covered the area with 4 inches of rich topsoil, and planted grass seed, covering the entire area with straw. Then we watered the area frequently to help the seeds to sprout into new grass. We look forward to a fresh stand of grass that will enhance our backyard. There are times when we need to start fresh with areas of our personal life. The old ways have to go and be completely removed from our lives. As a way of resisting change, we may have hardened over time, requiring the softening of our heart in order to move on. A fresh outlook creates a fertile atmosphere for growth. Change doesn’t come easy, so we need to nurture it for the best possibility of success. We may even protect ourselves from outside interference while we are in a fragile state of change. Can you see the correlation of a fresh start in life with the fresh start in the backyard? It all starts with the discarding of the old, worn out ways of doing things. Then, we prepare ourselves to be receptive for the new seed. The fertile topsoil of our garden is similar to the Word of God in our own lives. Its nutrients allow for a new way of life to flourish. Once we receive the seeds we nourish the area with water just as prayer and the Word of God nourishes our soul. In the garden we add straw, to keep the moisture in and protect the seeds from birds that might otherwise
prey on the seeds. In our lives, we surround ourselves with supportive people of faith. They encourage us and keep us true to the new direction in our lives. It is not easy to make real change, but careful nourishment and loving Christian support helps bring new life. In time, some new grass will come to the surface, and then will eventually spread to become a full stand of grass. It may take additional seeding to help fill in the bare spots, but with perseverance we will succeed. The same can be true of a new way of life in Christ.

It is worth the effort. Set your sights on a fresh start in something important to your overall well-being. It could be better health habits, establishing a new routine, or perhaps just being a better spouse. It could also be truly accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, or strengthening your faith. God is the creator of everything. Ask Him to help you, surround yourself with supportive people and then make a concerted effort to do the right things in His name. God will make it beautiful.

Mrs. Brewer had contracted Polio at the age of seven - 1945. As a result, she had either been in leg braces or in a wheel chair most of her life. However, she still gave birth to four children and adopted two others (one from an affair her husband had in the early 1970’s). She was able to forgive her husband and rekindle their marriage through God’s grace, love and comittment. shortly after Mike’s return from deployment, Everlene was forced into a nursing home in order for others to take care of her. Mike would often visit his in-laws in Motley, and every time, make a point of visiting Mrs. Brewer. Her life is filled with the most interesting stories and her disability is not a hindrance, but a blessed gift that she uses to share her life and lead people to fulfill their own inspiring purpose as servants of God. Her positive attitude and remarkable demeanor towards others, lends a powerful light that only comes from the spirit that controls her and the witness she is for so many people. Since her husband was in the Army and Mike was in the Navy, she is particularly fond of Americans in uniform. In addition to heading up Sunday School for her Nursing home in Altavista and now Norfolk, she also has led the nursing home in Altavista, Virginia in becoming the one nursing home (despite its size) to send more cards and letters to more of our service members than any nursing home in the country. Her dedication and prayers for our service members are unparalleled. Mr. and Mrs. Brewer spent most of their lives in poverty and struggled in many ways just to feed their family.
However, if you were to hear her testimony and read her life’s story, you would be amazed at how God has worked in her life and what joy she brings to people by witnessing to the Glory of God and how God has made such a difference in so many areas of her life. The story takes the reader from depression-era Virginia and the joining of Everlene’s parents to the present day agony of a modern nursing home. Throughout the story, emotions paint a picture of a woman of incredible feeling and substance and a life full of wonder and amazement. Mike hopes you enjoy the book and you are blessed to be a witness to such a remarkable life.

The current interest rate environment has caused many people to take a renewed look at their finances, specifically their retirement strategies. As a result, there has been an increased focus on annuities. While not appropriate for everyone, annuities can be a useful tool for retirement accumulation and creating income in retirement. Annuities are worth a look to see if they fit into your overall retirement portfolio.
inherited lump sums of money into retirement income for your lifetime, regardless of how long you live. Your income payments will begin right away. These products can provide a range of benefits including income options, you decide how to start taking income by choosing from among several payout options, including lifetime income. If you pass away during the guaranteed period, your beneficiaries may continue to receive annuity payments for the rest of the period, or the present value of any remaining payments.
An annuity is a contract you purchase and fund DOUG JONES JR. to receive money over a specified period of time plus interest. When you purchase an annuity, the insurer agrees to repay your money – plus the interest it earns – either in a lump sum or over a period of time you select. These products come in a variety of different specifications and can be used as fixed and guaranteed income in retirement- some even offer the potential for significant growth. Annuities are intended for long-term retirement goals and taking withdrawals or surrenders from these products may result in additional charges, so be sure when considering annuities to consult with a financial representative. Always remember that guarantees are backed by the strength and claims paying ability of the organization or company you’re working with. Below is a quick primer from Thrivent Financial on some basic types of annuities.
If you are near retirement and are concerned about whether you have the right portfolio of products in place, annuities might be worth a look. You can also choose an annuity which may offer a higher interest rate for increased growth and can offer a sense of reassurance by providing retirement income. If you’re looking for retirement income options, talk with your financial representative to see if an annuity would fit into your financial strategy. You can read more at www. thrivent.com/annuities.
Deferred Fixed Annuities: You can purchase a fixed annuity with a lump sum payment, or with flexible premiums (several payments over time), and receive a guaranteed minimum rate of return. The insurance company will pay interest at a fixed rate, which is usually established when you purchase your annuity. That rate is guaranteed for one year. In subsequent years, the rate may change as interest rates fluctuate but will never fall below the guaranteed minimum rate listed in the contract. These contracts will then pay out over a length of time you choose, including an option for lifetime income. A deferred fixed annuity may be right for you if you want guaranteed, dependable growth and plan to take income down the road, such as during retirement. Variable Annuities: These have values that fluctuate over time, according to the performance of the investment options and fixed accounts selected. Investments in fixed accounts earn at least a minimum interest rate guaranteed in the contract. These will also allow you to accumulate assets on a tax-deferred basis to help meet your retirement goals. This means your money has the opportunity to grow faster, because you don’t pay taxes on earnings until you actually withdraw them. Immediate Annuities: These can help you turn assets or

Living off the land is so rewarding and a blessing to a families budget. Growing your own food, whether it be a few tomatoes and cucumbers or SUSAN BERRY bushels of varying vegetables, is very smart in many ways. It is healthier since you know where your food comes from and you are getting exercise while gardening. It can save a substantial amount on the family grocery budget and it is a fun family activity. The garden can also be a great place to have a personal retreat and intimate time with God. We all have a path that seems to draw us closer to God, for me it is my gardens. Whether I am sowing seeds, planting seedlings, pulling weeds or spreading compost I find my time in the garden is where I get many revelations, creative ideas and inspirations. So for me, my gardens serve two very significant purposes in my life. I get quality time with God and I help my family live a more self sustaining life. I have recently discovered a gardening method that has been around for twenty years or so. It is called Back To Eden gardening. It was presented by Paul Gautschi via a film he made which can

The Global Missions Group
Get Involved MISSION TRIP DATES: JULY 31-AUGUST 11
BY STEVE WOOD AND CINDY WOOD GLOBAL MISSIONS GROUP
A
little over a year ago, my friend of nearly 40 years, Dr. Sherman Harris, contacted me about partnering with him and some others in the building of a church along the banks of the Amazon River. Sherman felt God leading him to start an independent, non-profit interdenominational Christian agency to assist in building local churches across denominational lines. The Global Missions Group was born out of this vision. Our founding board members were Sherman Harris (Southeast Nazarene Church, GSO); Roy Jones, (Shady Grove Wesleyan Church, Colfax), and Steve Wood (Forsyth Friends Church, W-Salem); Rick Pucket, Assembly of God). At the invitation of local Christian leaders in the Manaus, Brazil area, Sherman and I embarked on an exploratory mission in December 1-10, 2014, to Manaus, Brazil. We traveled by boat along the Rio Negro and Amazon Rivers. We met with church leaders from the Wesleyan Seminary, the

Church of the Nazarene, the New Baptist Church, Presbyterian Church, and the leaders of the wonderful ministry of Amazon Outreach. After 10 days of prayer, visitation and consultation, Pastor Manuel Lima, District Superintendent in Amazonas, asked if we could help. Global Missions Group accepted the invitation as a precipitating and providential rendering of our involvement. The group of new believers there in the little village of Santa Isabel, have been praying for a church in which they could worship, teach, lead Bible study and conduct weddings for nearly a decade. GMG accepted the challenge! We are now involved in the last stages of the planning and preparation for our missions trip, July 31-August 10, 2015. On July 31, we will depart from Raleigh for the trip. GMG has committed to bring 25 workers for for construction ministry, teaching, worship leaders.
Currently, the Lord has provided 20 team members from all across the state of NC. We are praying for at least 10 more. The cost is around $1950 per person, which will cover air fare, food and lodging for the entire trip. The trip requires a passport and Brazil Visa. We are asking God’s people, and you the reader, to do one or all of three things: Pray • Give • Go The cost for the construction of the church building is $15,000 US dollars. We are still accepting contributions for this ministry. Would you and your church prayerfully consider partnering with us? You can contribute online by visiting our Facebook page----facebook.com/ globalmissionsgroup---and follow the links there for giving and for more information about the mission project. We have a brand new compilation CD produced exclusively for this project. The CD contains 22 great inspiring Christian songs ranging from traditional, country, bluegrass, folk, Southern Gospel and contemporary Christian, original and hymns. Contributors to the CD include The Dixie Melody Boys, Steve Wood, Lane Loman, Chris Allman of Greater Vision, and other regional singers and songwriters. The CD is not for sale, but is available to all who contribute to the project.

BY: DEBBIE RHODES LICENSED MINISTER, CENTRAL TRIAD CHURCH
Over the years, I’ve heard an endless number of testimonies or just plain ole ‘moanies’ about being in the wilderness or the back side of the desert. I’ve shared mine a time or two. The Christian journey sure gets us our fair share of passport stamps! What struck me recently about the wilderness experience is that over the years I’ve been so focused on my location and how long I had been there that I’d missed a lot of Godmoments. And in God’s precious way, He revealed to me that the most critical part of the journey is not the duration or location, but the company kept while on that journey. Jeremiah Chapter 2 records that during the children of Israel’s exodus out of Egypt, that it was the Lord who brought them up out of that land of oppression; that He led them through the wilderness, through a land of deserts and pits; through a land of drought and the shadow of death and deep darkness; through a land that no man passes through and where no man dwells. He was with them the whole time! Verse 7 goes on to reveal that He brought them into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and good things. He did it for them – He’s in the process of doing that for me and you too. Even though an area is deemed uncultivated, uninhabited and/ or inhospitable – with God our wilderness can be made into a type of Eden. The wilderness doesn’t have to look so bleak or unwelcoming. After all, God is the Master Decorator and He can make any area look fabulous! Check out Isaiah 40:3-5 “A voice is calling, “Clear the way for the LORD in the wilderness; Make smooth in the desert a highway for our God. “Let every valley be lifted up, And every mountain and hill be made low; And let the rough ground become a plain, And the rugged terrain a broad valley; Then the glory of the LORD will be revealed, And all flesh will see it together; For the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” Of course, the wilderness I’m referring to isn’t a physical location but rather that inward atmosphere of where we really live – from one moment to the next, one emotional response to the next, from one

Got Wilderness? I’ve been wondering what the cover would look like if I titled a book ‘Got Wilderness?’ I can see me standing at the street signs that crisscross – one directional sign would state ‘Desert Valley Avenue’ and the other ‘Wilderness Way.’ Let’s all face the truth – we spend the majority DEBBIE RHODES of our lives in either the desert or the wilderness as we strive to reach our mountaintops – those moments of breakthrough or answered prayer or whatever you consider your mountaintop to be.

perspective to another and so on. The wilderness takes on many different forms, such as, a long list of unanswered prayers, unmet goals, unrealized dreams, loneliness, grief, chronic pain or illness, addictions, depression and/ or shattered expectations. Maybe your wilderness isn’t listed here, but feel free to add it as you read. In my oversight of not being conscious of the Good Company I had been in while on my journey – I’d also missed out on asking Him questions, like – what’s the purpose of going around this mountain? Why is it taking so long to get to the mountaintop? Which direction or step do I take next? Please understand – I did ask those questions, but I did not ask HIM. I fussed, murmured and complained to myself with those questions and blamed Him for not being there for me to deliver me out of said wilderness. If I had taken the time to acknowledge Him while dragging my feet through the dry and parched places, I have no doubt He would have shown me the great depth of revelations like the ones found in Deut. 8:2. ‘Remember all the ways which the LORD your God led you these forty years in the wilderness; to humble you, to prove you, and to know what was in your heart – whether you would be obedient or not.’ It’s a good thing He’s so patient and doesn’t give up on those He loves. It’s also a good thing that the wilderness and desert are available for me to have the privilege of walking through with Him. Being in the wilderness is no longer something that I dread but deeply appreciate because without the wilderness experiences, the mountaintop moments wouldn’t be nearly as sweet or precious, in my opinion. The truth is that I’ve never made one step of any part of my journey alone. He’s been with me the whole time. Watching. Waiting. Guiding. Protecting. Providing. Loving. Guess it’s not so bad in the wilderness after all – the scenery isn’t much to look at but the Company is truly beautiful.
For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? Romans 8:24 (KJV)
became white and beautiful and they broke out of the chains and were set free, the jail cells were transformed into crosses. At that time the crowd clapped so loud and I cried, for I knew the message had been sent and our mission was accomplished! We had awards shortly after and were so excited to find out that we placed with a Platinum trophy and 1st Place overall!
“We are family!”
We participated in dance competition for the first time this year, we went to 2 local competitions and a national competition as well! We don’t go for a trophy, but to shåare the news and message of Jesus and to show our students that you can do all things through worship and if you always put God in the center of your life you will gain the greatest reward and trophy in heaven! We went to Rock Hill, SC and performed a dance to Lauren Daggle, “How can it be”, the girls were in all black to represent the sin in their lives and started behind jail cells. Then their costumes
Needless to say, we were, and still are, beyond blessed and overfilled with joy in knowing we were able to go out and share the great news of Jesus and no matter what we have done in our lives, He loves us, He truly love us!! We are so thankful that we have the opportunity to lead kids in worship and dance at the same time and would love for others to join us in this amazing experience. PRAYING FOR PASTORS “Rubadub dub, thanks for the grub. Yay God!” Does a quick prayer before we eat reflect the depth of our prayer life? Perhaps we only feel effective praying when we are on our knees at some special time when we set aside life for an hour. But Christians know we are called to pray “without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). What does that look like? Well, it includes the meal blessing and the “sweet hour of prayer”, but beyond that it is an honest sharing of our every thought with God. For me, that continual sharing often leads me into prayer for specific people that come to mind as I think about day-to-day circumstances; family, friends, missionaries, those unsaved, antagonists, ministry leaders, persecuted believers and others. My pastor is another that must be on that list. When I think about the people that I pray for, the pastor isn’t usually the one with the most urgent need, nor is his need generally the most immediate. But in the big picture, his impact for the kingdom of God is immeasurable and his need for prayer very significant. This “Minute for Your Minister” is brought to you by Energize Ministries-providing encouragement, refreshment and recreation for your pastors and ministry leaders. For more ideas and inspiration about encouraging your ministry leaders AND their
Under his watch, the faithful are nurtured. In turn, they use their gifts to minister, including to those on my prayer list. The pastor’s influence reaches far beyond his own actions. A pastor may never open an orphanage, but someone in his congregation may, and many others may support it. He may never minister directly to the persecuted church, but the youth in the back row (who never seem to be paying attention) may fill that role. There are innumerable things a pastor will never do himself, but thanks to his ministry, his congregation will. That ministry can be awesome at times. At others it can feel like a 24/7/365 parade of pettiness, minutia, tragedy, failure, thanklessness, criticism and struggle that he never speaks of. Discouragement and a weakened ministry can result. If we truly believe in the power of prayer, we must be more intentional in praying for our pastors as they minister the gospel, planting seeds that impact the local and worldwide church for generations to come. spouses, visit energizeministries.com. What is “link2eternity?” BY TONY WATTS It happens all the time, and while the name of this ministry, “link2eternity,” may sound “neat” to some, others may wonder just what I was thinking when I created it. It began when I was introduced to apologetics by an undergrad professor, Dr. Yoho, at what was then called Piedmont Bible College, and it was he who first lit the fire and fanned the flame of apologetics as a discipline and necessity. It was his influence that drove me to stand in the gap in my witness for Christ without fearing those objections so oft paraded as something “intellectual.” It was under his tutelage, then, that I became most confident of the Gospel’s validity as the “power of God unto salvation” that Paul declared it to be in Romans 1:16. Despite all of the challenges hurled at the Christian Faith, then, there is one reality toward which I expedite every discussion possible. It is the one reality that lays the weight of response, both logically and necessarily, upon the mind and heart of each unbeliever, as well as the historical event upon which the Christian truth claims, the Gospel particularly, stand firm. The significance of the resurrection, then, cannot be overestimated, because as the Apostle Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 15, the weight of the entire Gospel rests upon it! If Christ is not risen, he reminds his readers, our preaching is futile, our faith is useless, and our message is a lie. Even more impor-
tantly, he notes, our sins remain, and our deceased loved ones “in Christ” have no hope (1 Corinthians 15:14-18). Need I say more? The Resurrection, then, is the “key stone” of the Christian Faith, and if it falls, every contingent Christian doctrine falls with it. It is the one reality that gives historical and logical credence to all biblical claims, particularly those about Jesus and his work in the sinner’s behalf. It is the evidential and indispensable hub of the Christian Gospel, both for its defense and declaration. Conversely, it is the scoffer’s shame and the skeptics “Achilles heel.” Essentially, the resurrection is humanity’s ever living physical link to the eternal that is securely tethered to the unchangeable historical record, a.k.a. Easter. Hence, “link2eternity.” He Lives! Tony is a preacher and author of “Love Still Wins: Loving God, Eternal Hell, And An Answer To Rob Bell.” Contact him at Tony@ link2eternity.com
