William Simpson's painting of Fiddlers' Close. The narrow passage was situated on the west side of High Street. Laid out in the 17th century, it is said to have acquired its name because it was once the home of a number of fiddle players. Many of the houses in the close had wooden upper storeys, as was common in old city centre. Under the stairway on the right of this image can be seen one of the wells which supplied water for the Glasgow Water Company. It was made of cast iron and operated by a key which when turned would release the water. The close was once the location of fashionable residences but by the 1840s it had degenerated to an overcrowded slum, with many of the buildings converted to lodging houses. Contemporary writers described the area as being populated predominantly with poor Irish immigrants. The close was swept away by the City Improvement Trust in 1878.

The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness, and dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour. After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoemaking and glovemaking. • He had a residence in 1886 in 36 South Shamrock Street, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland.

Robert McCONNELL was born in 1929 in Camlachie, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died in 1987 in Vale of Leven, West Dunbartonshire, Scotland aged 58.
Handloom weaving became an important industry in Glasgow during the 18th century and there were thriving communities of weavers in villages such as Gorbals, Calton, Anderston and Govan. Handloom weavers were self-employed and worked from home, weaving yarn into cloth, and it was a trade that could provide workers with a good income. However, the rapid development of new technologies during the industrial revolution resulted in the introduction of steam-driven powerlooms which could produce woven goods more quickly and cheaply than the handloom weavers. Wages and living standards fell sharply; in Govan, for example, handloom weavers who could once earn up to £2.10 shillings per week (£2.50) were earning between 5 and 8 shillings (25p-40p) by 1840. The handloom weaving industry declined rapidly thereafter, although a small number of weavers continued until the early 20th century producing fine and delicate cloths.

Samuel would have worked at a cotton mill in a Spinning Room operating one or more usually two facing each other, spinning machines, each with many spindles, to make thread. Because the floor beneath spinning machines was soaked in the oil from the cotton, spinners usually worked barefoot. Spinners normally employed their own piecers and paid them directly. A piecer mends broken threads during spinning. Often called a “little piecer because they started young. Usually employed by the spinner, rather than directly by the mill owners. A spinner would often employ their own children, thus keeping the money in the family. This would have been the case with Samuel’s daughter, who worked as a piecer in 1871 along with her mother who was also a piecer.
This is the more commonly recognised spinning wheel. Almost always used at home and normally by a woman.

Margaret worked as a Calender. This was a process used to smooth the surfaces of fabric, metal and mainly paper. Women only worked as Calenders in the paper making industry. The process gave a smooth and even gloss finish to paper by passing the sheets (more often rolls) between two cylinders rotating at slightly different speeds. During the nineteenth century health and safety were non-existent with no guarding of moving parts, resulting in many accidents, often serious. Calendering machine

Robert GILLESPIE and his family look to have immigrated to Scotland from Ireland in the 1860’s. There was two serious famines in Ireland, the Great Famine 1840-1845 and a lesser one in the 1870’s. Poverty and hardship would still have been commonplace particularly for Northern Irish Catholics and is the most likely reason they left Ireland. The Irish Catholic generally settled wherever physical strength was sought-after, and therefore became involved in coal mining, dock work and labouring of all kinds. In the latter half of the nineteenth century, it was estimated that between 50% and 75% of all dock-labourers and miners in Britain were Irish. Many were also involved in less skilled weaving and textile work. However, sectarianism, lack of education and, in many cases, language (Gaelic), hindered their involvement in the more highly paid skilled trades.

The definition of a Hammerman is a person who works with metal. They are described as Blacksmiths, Smiths and Forgers.
This was not the case with the hammermen who worked in the shipbuilding industry. Their job was to hammer the hot rivets, using a pneumatic hammer, that the rivetter inserted into the hull of the ship from the reverse side. This was very hard and tiresome work for the Hammerman although relatively easy for the rivetter who was classed as a skilled tradesman and earned substantially more than the Hammerman. Despite the differences in income the Riveter and his Hammerman often developed a bondship and even used their version of Morse Code to communicate with each other despite the deafening noise.

Addendum to James COATS b. 1858
The surname COATS is synonymous with the COATS dynasty of thread makers in Paisley, who went on to be the largest employer in the town’s history.
Investigation into the possibility of Joseph’s COATS ancestors being related has not found any hard evidence. The research would need to go further back than the current findings for both lines. That been said it is most likely there will be a connection. Looking at the births for COATS children for the period 1855 to 1875 shows very few births suggesting they all will be related. The chart below shows total births and male births for the Paisley COATS. 1855–1860 = 65 births (31 males) (2 males from Paisley) 1855–1865 = 126 births (62 males) (2 males from Paisley) 1855–1875 = 254 births (133 males) (7 males from Paisley)

Panning for gold
Looking at the areas that the PRENTICEs and MILNEs lived and died at Peter PRENTICE may well have done his gold prospecting in Ballart. Both Maryborough (about 50 miles North of Ballarat) and the districts of Moonee Ponds and Essondon (about 60 miles East of Ballarat, both in Melbourne). Ballarat was one of the main towns for the mining of gold.
Definition—Engineman or Engine Keeper, Haulage Engineman, Haulage Engine Attendant, Winding Engineman, or Winder

Why did Jane’s children all leave West Lothian?
It appears strange that only Jane’s children left the area, and all of Mary’s children remained. It might have been an unwelcome alliance with their new step-mother and they all up and left as soon as they were of age. This is of course pure speculation however may be worth further investigation. Margaret Charleston was the only child to go to New Zealand where she married James Neilson, so most likely she travelled alone. Christina Dymock married Peter J MEEK in 1875 in West Calder but ws living in London by 1891. Both Elizabeth Grey and William M. look to have emigrated to the United States, most probably to Pennsylvania as the both died there. Both Elizabeth and William married fellow Scots. Elizabeth Greymarried Joseph MacALISTER in 1880 in Whitburn, West Lothian so immigration would have been after that date. There is no marriage record for William in Scotland, however there was a marriage of William PRENTICE to a Mary KENNEDY in 1884 at Cambusnethan, the birthplace of Catherine. This would merit further investigation.
