9 Wellness Trends That Are Changing the Way You Spa

Caroline Tell - Sunday Edit

Whether you’ve been a regular spa-goer for years or see it as a special treat, the spa is a form of selfcare for many of us. What makes the experience exciting every time is that the spa industry is constantly pivoting with improvements, advancements, and new trends that promise to reform us from the inside out. The pandemic has created a vast shift in what people look for out of a spa experience, their expectations of facials and bodywork, and their comfort levels in close quarters to strangers. According to experts, here are some of the spa trends you might notice that shift within wellness culture.

A Wider Variety Of Customized Treatments

Gone are the days when you walk into a spa, pick a simple treatment off a menu and leave. According to Denise LaPalm, spas have already been offering a holistic approach to the body and mind, too. And this will only become a deeper part of a spa’s DNA in the coming year. “Personal treatments for guests who feel tired or stressed out, depressed, are fighting an illness, or have aches and pains will help to differentiate spas and make their guests feel more special,” she says.

Quick, No-downtime Treatments

With an increased online presence, enhanced filtering and the need to wear a mask in public, many cut back on the amount of makeup they applied because it wasn’t necessary anymore. However, even with less foundation and cover-up, many still chase after that flawless, perfect complexion, making skincare treatments highly demanding for many spas.

Shawnda Dorantes MSN, APRN, FNP-C has noticed a greater desire for quick, no-downtime treatments. This means the end of ‘musky chemical peels that leave your face sensitive and inflamed’ and the beginning of the ‘spa day on your lunch hour’ crowd. “This is fairly unsurprising as we live in a fast-paced culture centered around immediate gratification,” she notes

This type of treatment could be what Dorantes calls ‘baby Botox’ when younger patients seek this injectible as a preventive measure. “Instead of waiting until they already have fine lines and wrinkles that they want to treat, they are starting the treatment first to prevent those fine lines and wrinkles from forming,” she says. “There’s a heightened demand for this, especially in the eye area, as this area tends to show signs of aging first. In addition, this trend seems to fall under the natural, make-up-free skin trend because as people spend more time makeup free, they’re able to notice any preliminary signs of aging that they want to prevent from worsening.”

An Uptick In Natural Ingredients

With the cost of inflation skyrocketing, more people are turning towards natural sugar scrubs, soaps, and salt polishes, according to Claudine S. Riemer.

spa innovation

In addition to being generally more affordable, people are also becoming more mindful of what they put in — and on! — their bodies. “The environment is a big player here as well: choosing natural ingredients is a way to take care of the earth by avoiding damaging chemical compounds from being absorbed into our body and washed away into the earth,” she adds. In reaction to this trend, Riemer predicts more spas will want to draw a higher emphasis on where their ingredients come from.

Treatments That Strengthen Muscles

A big trend in medical spas is devices and treatments that work in a whole new way, according to Brian Nourian. So instead of erasing imperfections, why not heal yourself from the inside out? Or giving your face a workout to build strength?

With Emsculpt Neo and Evolve Transform, you can get rid of unwanted fat and build muscle in one treatment. And as Nourian explains, feeling stronger can help people with more than aesthetics.

“In the next few months, there will be a new device called Emface from BTL Aesthetics, and we foresee it taking over because it will also focus on strengthening the facial muscles. This gives faceliftlike results without going under the knife,” he predicts.

“People love pairing them with their already healthy lifestyles of working out and eating healthy. These treatments are a real boost if you add them to your current workout routines since they will speed up your goals.”

Implementing An Element Of Nature

Riemer predicts more spas will offer a natural element as part of their services. “We will see more outdoor type therapies and treatments that involve the ocean, the wild desert or forests, allowing people to reconnect with themselves and mother nature,” she predicts. “Spas will embody more of an ethnobotanical ethos, bringing guests outdoors into open-air treatment facilities that allow an immersion of nature.”

A Resurgence In Bathhouse Culture

Did you know the word ‘spa’ comes from a bathing town in Belgium? It’s an acronym for ‘Salus per aquam,’ which translates to ‘health through water.’

And in the 1990s, when spas gained popularity in the United States, they needed to have a water feature (a Vichy shower, hydrotherapy tub, and so on) to be considered an authentic ‘spa experience,’ according to Lisa Starr.

Though water hasn’t been essential for many years (there are even water-free pedicures!), Starr predicts a resurgence in bathhouse culture. As she explains, the healing powers of water are well-documented, but these new iterations also highlight the element of community.

“Throughout the U.S., there are hot springs locations

where you can enjoy warm thermal waters, alone or with friends, at any time of year, but we are now seeing bathing experiences brought into suburban and even urban environments,” she continues. “Think of a fitness center hot tub experience on steroids.

Pools with cascading streams and jets, warm and hot options, steam rooms, tepidariums, saunas, cold plunges, and loungers to rest on before taking another dip, are popping up all over.”

Higher Demand For Touchless Services

Contactless treatment offers increased due to safety and well, to save on labor costs, according to Vance Soto. These include meditation salt booths, sound baths, LED light bed services, meditation pods, private baths, hydrotherapy, infrared blankets and saunas, float pods — and more! Even as more people are willing to be up-close-and-personal again,

“These services are a win-win all around because the investment is in the equipment but offers the guest a service they want that’s human-less but still enables the guest to maintain their wellness routine,” he says. “These will become more mainstream and part of wellness routines.”

The Downfall Of Niche Centers

Starr says the last decade has seen tremendous specialization in all aspects of business, including beauty and wellness. This might mean a spa that only offers waxing, facials, or massages. And later, only nails, lash extensions, or blow-dry bars. However, in several difficult years for the wellness industry, many consumers have been inspired to rethink their priorities and time management. In other words: Starr doesn’t believe customers will want to have to visit four different places to meet their beauty and wellness needs. Instead, they’ll seek a one-stop shop.

“Expanded treatment menus may have options for face, body, massage, hair, nails, waxing, and even unattended wellness options,” she continues. “You may discover a spa with a juice bar component, movement therapy, or yoga studio incorporating a few spa treatment rooms or meditation rooms. It’s certainly easier to visit one location for more purposes, and you may discover something you didn’t realize you needed in your life.”

Bodywork Becomes A Necessity, Not A Luxury

Believe it or not, Soto says his bodywork business has doubled since before the pandemic. “I think people have realized how important taking care of themself and their body has become,” he continues. “We have more regulars than ever before for massage and bodywork. Guests that once considered it a ‘luxury’ have changed their perspective to view it as more of a necessity.”

pHformula: SYNERGY advanced serum

An age-reducing, concentrated serum with an innovative synergy of ingredients to address multiple signs of ageing and improve skin texture, resulting in a healthy, vibrant skin. This advanced serum contains growth factors and a micro-algae derived bio-retinoid for a multidimensional activity. Contributes to minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, visibly firming and providing skin elasticity. Recovers skin luminosity with a lifting effect. Quick-absorbing with a silky finish.

The synergistic effects of Liposomed growth factors, microalgae derived Bioretinoid with retinol-like properties and ubiquinone contributes to minimise fine lines and wrinkles, visibly firms, provides skin elasticity and promotes cell activation. Secretome growth factors are key for intercellular communication to preserve the skin extracellular matrix, increase collagen and elastin production as well as increase the regenerative potential of fibroblasts. It has proven to redefine the facial contour with a firming effect, provides an elevating lifting effect, and recovers skin luminosity. Niacinamide in synergy with Mandelic acid and Glycyrrhetinic acid target inflammageing, helping to inhibit proinflammatory mediators and light damages.

Understanding a few of the Active Ingredients

NIACINAMIDE . A skin soothing action targeting inflammageing. It has potent antioxidant properties and contributes to the stimulation of collagen synthesis to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Niacinamide helps to reduce skin sallowness, redness and blotchiness. Contributes to the improvement of the skin barrier function. Additionally, slows down melanosome transfer to the keratinocytes to contribute to the reduction in hyperpigmentation.

LIPOSOMED GROWTH FACTORS are a complex consisting of 5 growth factors, an amino acid and a vitamin that is stabilised within a liposome, improving its penetration and efficacy. The Liposomed growth factors consists of EGF (Epidermal Growth Factor), IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor 1), acidic and basic FGF (Fibroblast Growth Factor), VEGF (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor), fermented folic acid (vitamin B9) and an amino acid, Acetyl Glutamine. Working in synergy for a powerful antiwrinkle effect due to improved collagen and elastin synthesis, promotion of cell proliferation, differentiation and migration and enhanced wound healing effect. Cells are revitalised due to improved cell energy. Skin hydration is improved which will help to reduce trans epidermal water loss and improve skin barrier function.

MANDELIC ACID . Due to being one of the highest molecular weight AHAs, it penetrates gradually and uniformly into the skin. Its keratolytic properties promotes cell turnover and renewal, helps to refine uneven skin texture, contributes to the stimulation of collagen and GAGs, and contributes to a more eventoned complexion. Mandelic acid also helps to reduce hyperpigmentation dyschromia's and contributes to the reduction in post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH).

MICROALGAE DERIVED BIO-RETINOID is a next generation bio-retinoid of Xanthophylls' apocarotenoids encapsulated in a delivery and dermal-epidermal junction proteins, resulting in age-reducing benefits. Helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Powerful antioxidant that helps to improve endogenous skin defence mechanisms to help protect skin cells against several types of ageing. It has moisturising and soothing properties and assists to reduce pore size.

Whether caused by the digital revolution, the pandemic or the dawn of a new decade, more spagoers than ever are asking for uniquely tailored spa experiences, from personalized treatments to fully customized spa packages. Pulse spoke to spa leaders to find out what is driving the trend and how your spa can take advantage of the opportunities afforded by customization and personalization.

Crazy for Customization

Peoples haved changed the way that they world view themselves, their health and their lifestyles. Ask any spa director about market demand right now and you'll hear the same thing: people are crazy for spa. In fact, many spas currently report that the only thing keeping them from smashing any and all revenue records is the industry's profound staffing shortage. A greater appreciation for a customized approach to wellness is at the heart of this renewed interest in living healthier, longer lives; that is, spagoers are coming to spas not just seeking spa experiences, but customized, bespoke spa experiences. In a study of consumer attitudes towards wellness released earlier this year, McKinsey & Company found that “a substantial majority of consumers around the world say they prioritize personalization now more than they did two or three years ago.” In the U.S., more than 88 percent of consumers value personalization more than before; McKinsey & Company also report that customers in Brazil and China are particularly willing to trade privacy for greater personalization.

It's hard not to see consumers' growing valuation of custom experiences as connected to the wearable technology boom. In a world where everyone has a Fitbit or Apple Watch that constantly tracks their personal health in order to make personalized recommendations, why wouldn't consumers expect wellness experiences to also be tailored to them?

It's not that simple, however. Laura Martinez, director of spa at the Four Seasons at the Surf Club, views a proclivity for custom spa experiences as a reaction against technology. “We're so connected and virtual in so many ways,” says Martinez, “but at the end of the day, people still need that physical connection.” Viewed this way, the increasingly digital world in which we live is precisely why consumers are craving physical treatments now more than ever. Todd Shaw, Chief Experience Officer of Fountain Life-an integrated platform for healthcare and wellness-sees these increases as the product of existing organic trends within the industry. “I think we're all just sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Shaw says. “My parents' generation is trying to stay as healthy as long as they can, my generation is trying to be healthier, and the younger generation is making even healthier decisions. It's this movement that's happening organically.” Part of that, adds Shaw, is the realization of how much harm has been done by choices we now know to be deleterious to one's health, such as smoking, alcohol or added sugar: the knowledge of our past sins inspires us to be better in the future.

Diverse Approaches, One Goal

Virtually all spas are now trying to offer more customized, personalized, or bespoke spa experiences with the same goal in mind: a transformative experience. In the past, hotel spas, in particular, often resisted offering customized services out of a desire to present clients with a

spa innovation

standardized high-quality experience that they could rely on from location to location. Many years ago, says Cecilia Hercik, director of spa and wellness at Sea Island Resort, “We were so focused on consistency and protocols that we did not allow our providers to use their whole toolbox. Now, I think many we have realized that service providers can create very unique, personalized services.”

The picture is different now at Sea Island, which recently launched a variety of self-guided journeys that allow spa-goers to chart their own path through the spa's facilities. Sea Island's four self-guided journeys are designed to draw attention to the spa's communal facilities-including a cascading waterfall pool, an aromatherapy area, and a sound therapy area-some of which may be confusing for customers to find or use without specific direction. Each guest receives a laminated waterproof “menu” that they can carry around which outlines the self-guided journey for them. Through this clever use of spa facilities, Sea Island Resort was able to add an experience that feels tailored to each customer without having to invest significant capital or manpower in its implementation.

Martinez at the Four Seasons at the Surf Club creates custom experiences during the treatment itself through engaged conversations throughout the customer journey. “At the end of the day, it's really about listening to our guests' needs and being interested,” Martinez says. The spa uses every touch points - the initial booking call, the in-person check-in, the conversation with the therapist before the service begins to ask smart questions and listen closely to the answers.

Another popular approach to offer customized spa experiences and tailored treatments combinations is to charge by time, not by service: this is how Tereza Zanchi - a spa with 10 locations in Brazil, provides customized treatment packages. A client can book either a 30-, 45-, 60-, 90- or 120-minute session and combine services a la carte. “A customer could do thirty minutes of shiatsu plus thirty minutes of reflexology, for example,” says Co-Founder Katja Guimaraes. “Charging for the time makes it easy to operate. For a small difference in price, the confusion of charging by the service, isn't worth it.”

Building a Business Case

The business benefits of offering customized services are, for the most part, self-evident. Customized experiences lead to happier spa-goers who are more likely to return to the spa. At the same time, the higher price point attached to more customized and personalized experiences also means greater revenues and bigger profit margins. However, there are benefits that are less intuitive. For example, Hercik notes that customized treatments don't only lead to happier clients: they lead to happier staff, too. Allowing therapists to use their full range of skills to customize services reignites their passion. “The excitement you see on the therapists - they went to school with that inspiration? They had a gift and a passion. Sometimes we clip their wings a little bit too much.”

On the other hand, there are challenges to offering customized services. Staffing is a major obstacle. In order to coordinate customized packages that bridge fitness, massage, aesthetics and more, “you need a qualified individual that understands different areas of the spa,” says Hercik. While that person

can be the spa director or spa manager, taking the lead on customizing treatments can be too timeconsuming to be practical. Timing can also be a sticking point, according to Martinez. “Looking at the provider's perspective, timing is hard,” she says. “How much time do they need to listen to the guest? Some guests open up really quickly. Others, not so much.” Training staff on human psychology and how to ask effective questions can help overcome the timing challenge, but costs both time and money on the front end. Behind the scenes, managing back bar inventory is also made more difficult by customized treatments: it's harder to anticipate product use when offering custom treatments.

Todd Shaw speaks to ways that customization adds to the burden of responsibility, too. This is especially true for Fountain Life, which works with a client on a total healthcare evaluation that includes traditional medicine as well as spa, wellness and fitness. “Right now, a doctor can feel comfortable because they're playing within the standards that have been approved,” says Shaw. At FountainLife, which uses advanced diagnostics in order to proactively measure and improve health, they don't have the luxury of convention, and this adds to their responsibility. While the stakes at a spa might be different. When we create a customized massage or facial, I send it to my therapist and I say, 'No protocols, use your whole toolbox and do whatever is necessary, this allows your spa to offer a customized experience at very little additional cost by eliminating the need to spend time guiding a client to book the correct service at the time of reservation. Hercik adds, “I think sometimes we overthink it by trying to find too many wellness counselors when the practitioner can do all that for you.” Echoing Hercik's advice, Martinez adds that you could also start even smaller by offering an exclusive customized experience to only your spa's most frequent customers.

Getting Started

None of those challenges are insurmountable, though; says Martinez, “At the end of the day, all of this is worth it when you see the guest blown away by their experience.” If your spa wants to implement new ways to customize treatments, there are small but smart ways to start doing so.

One way is to offer a single custom treatment that is sold only in one time length. Allow your therapist to use any methodologies and products that they feel will benefit the client's needs.

If you're hesitant to begin offering fully customized services, you can still make the spa experience more unique by personalizing your services; while the methodologies might be standardized, smaller aspects-like aromatherapy oils, beverage choice, etc. can be altered to suit a client's specific preferences. It's especially impressive if your spa remembers these preferences, says Shaw, by actually attaching them to a client's profile in your spa booking software. The idea of personalization doesn't have to be crazy. Just show people that you care about the details. In providing a customized experience, therapists have to feel comfortable and confident in stepping away from standardized protocols; in doing this, they take even more of the spa-goer's happiness into their own hands.

THERANAKA PRO+ COLLAGEN 3D ARCHITECT COLLECTION

In our quest for the most effective ingredients to deliver unparalleled results in skincare, our extensive research led us to the remarkable anti-aging properties of collagen, a timeless and proven solution.

However, with the ever-changing demands of consumers and the increasing importance of sustainability, we were determined to go beyond merely being animal-friendly. That's why we introduced Col-Frag Remastered™ , a revolutionary and technologically advanced concept of collagen that not only surpasses traditional collagen in efficacy but also ushers in a new era of collagen innovation.

As the skin ages, the complexion can appear tired and in most cases, lack vitality. Meet the Pro+ Collagen 3D Architect Collection, a new generation of agedefying technology that helps preserve youthful firmness and luminosity. While it replenishes the skin’s natural moisture reservoirs, it is stimulated with new generation active ingredients that helps to plump and firm the skin, targeting the problem from multiple levels and enhancing skin brightness.

Col-Frag Remastered™, the hero to the Pro+ Collagen 3D Architect Collection, acts as a building block and booster for collagen synthesis, and tightens the dermis and epidermis while preventing aging, the exact reason why this range is collectively referred to as 3D Architect, boosting collagen on multiple levels within the skin.

Col-Frag Remastered™ is a special substance that is made by imitating a specific part of human collagen, which is a protein found naturally in our bodies. This imitation is created using a sustainable technology called vertical farming where wild plants are used as "biofactories" to produce this substance.

The important thing about this imitation is that it is made to closely resemble the natural structure of the collagen fragment, including the necessary modifications that make it work efficiently. These modifications are crucial for the effectiveness of the collagen.

This luxurious age-defying skincare collection envelops

the skin in velvety moisture and offers superior skinplumping hydration. From Tech to Tools, the Next Generation of Beauty

These days, technology is about more than the latest social media app. It is the next phase of the $445 billion global beauty market, infiltrating everything from blue light masks and pore vacuums to AI experiences and customized algorithms. Just when you thought you nailed your facial cleansing routine, a new electronically charged appliance that promises to target skincare concerns such as aging, acne and hyperpigmentation comes out. Or just when you finally figured out your ideal foundation tone, now machine learning can figure it out for you, andoffer a lip color to match. But technology is not just about selling products. “The purchase is not the end-game anymore,” L’Oréal’s Chief Retail Officer Marc-Alexandre Risch told WWD last year. “It’s about engagement with the brands, it’s about the lifetime value of your customers.”

Right now, more than 180,000 people are attending the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and the main event? Beauty. Advances in beauty and wellness technology have you seeing double digit grwoth.

The Tools

Remember how state-of-the art the Clarisonic seemed when it launched back in 2001? The fact that you could utilize a battery-charged bristle brush to get a deeper facial cleanse was mind-blowing. Fastforward a decade or two and now you can perform all facials thanks to the many massagers, steamers, blackhead extractors, at-home microdermabrasion kits and blue light acne masks on the market today.

Do they work? It depends on what you are trying to fix. “For simple at-home solutions, like pore cleansing or exfoliation, some of these devices can work incredibly well,” says Claire Wolinsky, M.D.,a New York-based dermatologist. “However, if you have severe acne issues or deeper fine lines, there’s only so much an at-home device can do before inoffice professional treatment is required.”

Our favorite tech tools? We are currently loving the voice-enabled smart mirrorson the market that adjust lighting or embed cameras to view your skin in microscopic detail. We are also super excited about the Kerastase Hair Coach, the first-ever series of smart hairbrushes and styling tools that can detect damage and dryness from roots to ends. This one was introduced last year at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show and has only grown in popularity.

The Apps

These days you are just one swipe away from a luxury facial, rock star blowout, or from a dermatologist who can prescribe the optimal cream for rosacea. Beauty brands and experts are now utilizing our cell phone addiction to do good in the world, or at least make us look great. Beautylishis an app that features the latest beauty trends and

spa innovation

products as well as professional reviews, peer-topeer tutorials and a custom purchasing system so you never have to leave the app to achieve the look of your dreams.

Meanwhile, Indulge is a nail app that lets you scan and save any color to get its name and brand information. If you are the type to show off that fresh manicure, you can share your new look with anyone in your contacts and keep a record of what shades worked best.

Artificial Intelligence

Merriam-Webster defines Artificial Intelligence as an area of computer science that explores how intelligent behavior is simulated in computers. It also covers how a machine imitates intelligent human behavior.

So, what does that mean in the context of beauty? Various brands are now relying on such “intelligent behavior” to create actionable solutions for consumers. My Beauty Matchesprovides personalized recommendations that help consumers find products for their skin types or haircare colors. Using machine learning is a win/win all around as it drives higher conversion rates online and helps retail partners understand their customers. Beauty.aidetermines how we define the most beautiful people in the world. It analyzes fine lines, facial structure, skin tone and age to determine global winners. L’Oreal-owned ModiFaceuses chatbot technology like Facebook Messenger, which allows users to upload selfies directly into the chat to try on products virtually.

My Beauty Matches

But, before you go swapping out your brunette mane for platinum, know that getting your dream look is not always seamless in real life. “Often these apps create a digitized experience and tonally it can appear perfect on the screen, but in reality, the science of color doesn’t always work that way,” says Elisabeth Lovell, founder of Brooklyn’s Whiteroom Salon. “In reality, switching out your hair color can be an 8 to 12-hour project, which an app may not always recognize. Also, the picture may not account for hair damage done in the process.”

Augmented Reality

Whether via 3D glasses in-store or on a smartphone at home, consumers are increasingly calling upon augmented reality (AR) to experiment in the beauty or fitness space. In a new study conducted by virtual beauty app Perfect365 and Poshly, 78 percent of millennial customers were found to purchase cosmetics if they could preview them in advance. Similarly, arecent Intagestudy, commissioned by Perfect Corp., found that users of its YouCam Makeup app(which uses 3D face

scanning to apply the product to lips, eyes, brows, and cheeks) are1.6 times more likely to purchase cosmetic products and 2.7 times more likely to spend money on beauty products than non-users.The numbers do not lie, consumers want to preview products virtually before deciding whether to purchase a new highlighter or blush palette. Coty, Inc. just recently that it has developed for its Wella Professionals salons an augmented reality mirror allowing customers to try on a range of hair colors.

Meanwhile, Sally Hansen’s ManiMatchapplies similar technology to fingernails, where the app scans your hand and then lets you choose from any number of Sally Hansen nail products to virtually try on.

In the fitness industry, everyone is speaking about Mirror. It is a connected fitness system that streams live and on-demand classes to users in-home via a sleek responsive display. During class, the instructor will provide real-time comments and even personal shout-outs to keep you motivated. You can sync a Bluetooth heart rate monitor (complimentary with purchase) or Apple Watch to enable competition mode.

Innovation in the Spa Space: A Consultant's Perspective spa innovation

I often get asked how did I become a wellness & spa consultant? I truly can say consultancy chose me. I started out as a distributor in the spa industry and as my company grew and the industry grew, so did the demand from my clients grow for guidance by an expert. Every client requests the best possible advice, and it is imperative that I stay abreast of the trends and innovation within the global industry to advise my clients accordingly.

In the realm of spa equipment, innovation is not just about introducing something new; it's about turning a vision into reality while meeting my client requests, consumer demands, and addressing infrastructure, architectural and budget availability. As a leading consultant in this dynamic industry, my role is to navigate the intersection of innovation, creativity, quality, profitability, and energy-efficiency to deliver solutions that elevate both client satisfaction and business success.

Understanding the Essence of Innovation

Innovation is more than just a buzzword; it's a driving force behind progress and evolution in the spa industry. At its core, innovation encompasses the ability to conceive and implement novel ideas, technologies, or processes that enhance the way spa professionals deliver services and consumers experience treatments. Whether it's pioneering advancements in device technology, introducing groundbreaking treatment modalities, or reimagining the client experience, innovation serves as a catalyst for positive transformation.

Meeting Client Requests / Consumer Demands

One of the primary roles of a consultant is to bridge the gap between client requests and consumer demands. This involves understanding the unique needs and objectives, whether they're seeking to expand the spa's service offerings, improve treatment efficacy, or optimize operational efficiency. By collaborating closely with clients, I strive to identify their pain points, aspirations, and desired outcomes, ensuring that any recommended solutions align seamlessly with their goals.

Simultaneously, consumer demands play a pivotal role in shaping the direction of innovation within the industry. Today's consumers are increasingly discerning, seeking out treatments that deliver visible results. Moreover, there's a growing emphasis on personalized experiences and sustainable practices. As such, I work to anticipate emerging trends and

preferences among consumers, guiding clients towards equipment and technologies that resonate.

Navigating Architectural Logistics

Innovation cannot exist in a vacuum; it must be integrated within the broader framework of infrastructure and architectural logistics. Whether it's a standalone spa, a multi-functional wellness center, or a high-end medical clinic, the physical environment plays a critical role in shaping the efficacy and accessibility of treatments. As a consultant, I collaborate closely with architects, designers, and facility managers to ensure that equipment installations are seamlessly integrated into existing spaces, optimizing workflow efficiency and enhancing the overall client experience.

Moreover, I consider logistical considerations such as space constraints, power requirements, ventilation systems, operational requirements and regulatory compliance. By proactively addressing these factors, I help clients avoid potential pitfalls and streamline the implementation process, enabling them to realize the full potential of their investment in innovative equipment.

Innovation Through Creativity and Quality

Creativity is the lifeblood of innovation, fuelling the development of imaginative solutions that push the boundaries of what's possible in the spa industry. Whether it's conceptualizing cutting-edge treatment protocols, designing intuitive user interfaces, or crafting captivating marketing campaigns, creativity infuses every aspect of the innovation process. As a consultant, I encourage clients to think outside the box, challenge conventional wisdom, and embrace a spirit of experimentation and exploration.

However, innovation must also be underpinned by a commitment to quality, reliability, and profitability. In the fast-paced world of spa equipment, there's no room for compromise when it comes to performance, safety, and durability. That's why I advocate for clients to prioritize reputable manufacturers and suppliers known for their track record of excellence. By selecting equipment that meets rigorous quality standards and undergoes thorough testing and certification, offer reliable warranties, clients can minimize risk and maximize the return on their investment in innovation.

Embracing Energy-Efficiency for Sustainabity

Innovation isn't just about achieving something new; it's also about advancing sustainability and

environmental responsibility. In an era of growing eco-consciousness, energy-efficiency has emerged as a key consideration in the design and operations. From LED light therapy devices to laser systems with advanced cooling mechanisms, there's a myriad of energy-efficient technologies available that not only reduce carbon footprint but also lower operating costs.

As a consultant, I advocate for the adoption of energyefficient practices and technologies as part of a broader commitment to sustainability. Whether it's recommending equipment with low power consumption, optimizing treatment protocols to minimize waste, or implementing eco-friendly disposal methods, using alternative energy sources like solar, I help clients embrace an approach to environmental stewardship. By integrating energy-efficiency into their operations, clients not only contribute to a greener future but also enhance their brand reputation and appeal to eco-conscious consumers.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Innovation

As we look to the future, the landscape of spa equipment innovation continues to evolve at a rapid pace. From advancements in artificial intelligence and robotics to breakthroughs in regenerative medicine and gene therapy, the possibilities are virtually limitless. However, the true measure of innovation lies not just in its novelty but in its ability to deliver tangible benefits and analysis of the guest to professionals and consumers alike.

As a consultant, my commitment to innovation remains unwavering. By staying abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and consumer preferences, I strive to empower clients to embrace the future with confidence and conviction. Whether it's harnessing the power of virtual reality for immersive spa experiences or leveraging data analytics to personalize skincare regimens, or a complete digital detox approach, I'm dedicated to helping clients unlock the full potential of innovation.

In conclusion, innovation is a multifaceted endeavour that requires a delicate balance of creativity, quality, and practicality. By aligning client requests, consumer demands, and infrastructure considerations, while embracing energy-efficiency and sustainability, we can chart a course towards more harmonious, beautiful spa and wellness spaces.

Key Questions When Investing into Aesthetic Equipment, with a Budget

When considering an investment in aesthetic equipment, especially with budget constraints, it's crucial to ask yourself several key questions to ensure you make a well-informed decision:

What are my specific goals and objectives? Define your objectives clearly. Are you looking to enhance existing services, expand your treatment offerings, attract new clients, or improve efficiency?

What treatments or services do I want to offer? Identify the specific aesthetic treatments or services you intend to provide. This will help narrow down the type of equipment you need. Easier to sell and market “trending” treatments and procedures

What is my budget? Determine your budget constraints upfront. This will guide your decisionmaking process and help you focus on options that align with your financial resources.

What are the ongoing costs? Consider not only the initial purchase price but also ongoing expenses such as maintenance, servicing, consumables, and training.

What is the potential return on investment (ROI)? Assess the potential revenue generation and profitability of the equipment. Calculate the ROI based on factors such as treatment pricing, demand, and utilization rates.

What are the space and infrastructure requirements? Evaluate whether your facility has adequate space, power supply, ventilation, and other infrastructure necessary to accommodate the equipment.

What are the regulatory and compliance considerations? Ensure that the equipment complies with relevant regulations, certifications, and safety standards. The South African market requires registration with SAHPRA for any energy-based device

What is the reputation and reliability of the manufacturer or supplier? Research the reputation, track record, and customer reviews of the manufacturer or supplier. Opt for reputable brands known for quality, reliability, and after-sales support.

What training and support are provided? Inquire about training programs, user manuals, technical support, and warranties offered by the manufacturer or supplier. Adequate training is essential for safe and effective use of the equipment.

What are the technology and features? Evaluate the technology, features, and capabilities of the equipment. Consider factors such as versatility, ease of use, customizable settings, and compatibility with existing systems. Patient safety and clinical efficacy is most important.

What are the potential risks and limitations? Assess the potential risks, side effects, contraindications, and limitations associated with the equipment and treatments. Mitigate risks by conducting thorough research and seeking expert advice.

Have I compared multiple options? Explore multiple equipment options, brands, models, and suppliers to make an informed comparison. Consider factors such as pricing, features, reputation, and suitability for your specific needs.

By asking these key questions and conducting thorough research, you can make a well-informed decision when investing in aesthetic equipment, even with budget constraints.

Complementing this action, Beta Arbutin contributes skin-brightening properties, enhancing overall luminosity. Together, these ingredients deliver comprehensive management of hyperpigmentation issues, fostering a more uniform complexion while ensuring compatibility with diverse skin types due to its well-tolerated nature.

In parallel, the Peptide Booster embodies SKNlogic's commitment to anti-aging and skin revitalization. Formulated with advanced peptides and multi-weight hyaluronic acid, this booster offers a transformative experience for the skin. Peptides, renowned for their ability to stimulate collagen and elastin synthesis, work diligently to improve skin elasticity and firmness, thereby reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Meanwhile, multi-weight hyaluronic acid deeply penetrates the skin's layers, providing intense hydration, plumping effects, and bolstering moisture retention for a supple and rejuvenated complexion.

Both boosters exemplify SKNlogic's dedication to integrating cuttingedge ingredients with proven efficacy into their skincare arsenal. Biologique Recherche's PROGESKIN Serum

Biologique Recherche continues to push the boundaries of skincare innovation with the introduction of their latest breakthrough, the PROGESKIN serum. This serum represents a significant advancement in anti-aging technology, specifically designed to combat cellular senescence, a fundamental process in the aging of skin cells.

Understanding Cellular Senescence

Cellular senescence is a natural biological phenomenon characterized by the irreversible cessation of cell division while remaining metabolically active. This process plays a crucial role in tissue regeneration and the elimination of damaged cells. However, as we age, the balance between cell renewal and senescence shifts. Accumulation of senescent cells in tissues, including the skin, contributes to a pro-inflammatory environment that accelerates visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and pigmentation irregularities.

The Role of Progerin and Klotho

Biologique Recherche's research has focused on two key proteins central to the senescence process:

Progerin: This abnormal protein accumulates naturally with age and disrupts cellular function and the integrity of the extracellular matrix. Its presence leads to thinning of the skin, loss of elasticity, and the appearance of wrinkles. By targeting Progerin, PROGESKIN serum aims to mitigate these effects, promoting firmer, more resilient skin.

Klotho: Known as the "Youth Protein," Klotho is essential for maintaining cellular health. It enhances the skin's resistance to oxidative stress and supports mechanisms that counteract aging at a metabolic level. By preserving Klotho levels, PROGESKIN helps sustain youthful cellular function and appearance.

Clinical studies have demonstrated that regular use of PROGESKIN serum leads to measurable improvements in skin firmness, elasticity, and overall radiance. Users have reported a reduction in the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, as well as enhanced hydration and a more even skin tone. These benefits underscore the serum's efficacy in addressing multiple signs of aging simultaneously.

Biologique Recherche's PROGESKIN serum represents a significant advancement in anti-aging skincare, targeting the root causes of cellular senescence with precision and efficacy. By addressing the imbalance created by Progerin accumulation and supporting the protective role of Klotho, the serum offers a comprehensive solution to combat the visible signs of aging and promote long-term skin health.

Innovation in Sustainability: No Rinse Body Wraps

Dr. Christian Jurist, MD, AMS, FS, Pevonia's medical director of global education, defines no rinse body wraps as treatments that operate entirely without water. These treatments do not involve spraying, wetting, or rinsing the skin, though they may incorporate water-based products and the use of humid or steamed towels at certain stages.

Pevonia offers two distinctive no rinse body wrap treatments: the Cactus & Agave and the highly favored Crepe-No-More. Both treatments are celebrated for their anti-aging benefits, with the Crepe-No-More standing out for its remarkable efficacy in rejuvenating body skin and enhancing body contouring results.

Spas and their clientele are increasingly prioritizing sustainable treatment options that minimize environmental impact, especially in regions like South Africa, which have grappled with water shortages and restrictions. Pevonia addresses this critical need with its range of eco-friendly body wraps formulated with 100% absorbable ingredients that require no rinsing. These pioneering treatments effectively reduce water consumption, making them ideal for spas with limited shower facilities or rooms not traditionally equipped for water-based therapies. The Surging Popularity of Saunas spa excellence

The sauna market is growing globally by about 5 percent annually, as per research from GWI and the growth is strongly linked to the megatrend of wellness.

The evolution of saunas and steam rooms within the global spa industry embodies a seamless blend of tradition and innovation, driven by the growing demand for holistic wellness experiences. Across diverse cultural landscapes, spas are revitalizing these age-old practices by integrating cutting-edge technology, adopting sustainable principles, and embracing unique design concepts. This transformative approach not only meets contemporary expectations of relaxation and rejuvenation but also enhances overall well-being through personalized experiences and a commitment to sustainability. As trends continue to evolve, the focus remains steadfast on maximizing health benefits and crafting unforgettable spa journeys that cater to a diverse clientele.

Embracing Diverse Design Concepts

Saunas and steam rooms worldwide are undergoing a renaissance in design, drawing inspiration from cultural traditions and contemporary aesthetics to create distinctive and immersive wellness environments.

1. Scandinavian Simplicity and Naturalism

Scandinavian design principles have profoundly influenced spa architecture, particularly in sauna construction. The emphasis on minimalism, natural materials, and serene atmospheres resonates deeply with the concept of relaxation and connection with nature.

In Finland, the birthplace of the sauna tradition, spas integrate Finnish pine, spruce, and other native woods to create warm and inviting sauna spaces. These designs often feature clean lines, large windows offering views of natural landscapes, and simple, functional layouts that enhance the sauna experience. Sauna-goers immerse themselves in an environment that evokes a sense of tranquility and purity, contributing to both physical and mental relaxation.

2. Japanese Zen and Onsen Influences

Drawing from the centuries-old tradition of Japanese onsens (hot springs), spas around the world incorporate elements of Japanese design to evoke a sense of purification and serenity in steam rooms and baths. Materials such as bamboo, tatami mats, and natural stone are employed to create a harmonious blend of simplicity and elegance.

In these spa settings, guests experience a seamless

transition from the calming heat of the sauna or steam room to the contemplative ambiance of a traditional Japanese soaking tub. The integration of Japanese design principles emphasizes the holistic nature of wellness, promoting relaxation, mindfulness, and the rejuvenation of both body and spirit.

3. Modern Architectural Innovations

Beyond traditional influences, contemporary spas are exploring avant-garde architectural concepts to redefine the sauna and steam room experience. Cutting-edge designs incorporate futuristic elements such as glass panels, LED lighting systems, and sculptural forms that challenge conventional perceptions of spa spaces.

Architects and designers are experimenting with innovative materials and spatial arrangements to create visually striking sauna environments that inspire awe and foster a sense of exploration. These modern interpretations not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of spas but also contribute to a dynamic and immersive wellness journey for guests seeking novelty and sophistication.

Integration of Technology

Modern spas are leveraging technology to enhance the sauna and steam room experience, offering guests greater control and customization: Smart Controls: Advanced systems allow users to adjust sauna temperatures, humidity levels, and lighting through intuitive interfaces such as mobile apps or touch-screen panels.

Virtual Reality (VR): Integrating VR technology into sauna sessions to provide immersive experiences, including guided meditations or virtual landscapes, promoting deeper relaxation and mental wellness.

Integration with Hybrid Wellness Experiences

Saunas and steam rooms are increasingly integrated into comprehensive wellness programs that combine heat therapy with other modalities to optimize health benefits and enhance overall well-being.

Wellness Retreats and Destination Spas

Wellness retreats and destination spas leverage sauna and steam room experiences as integral components of holistic health programs. These venues offer guests immersive retreats that combine daily sauna sessions with activities such as yoga, meditation, nutritional counseling, and fitness classes.

In destinations like Iceland, thermal springs and geothermal baths are incorporated into wellness retreats, providing guests with opportunities to experience the therapeutic benefits of natural hot

springs alongside modern sauna and steam room facilities. This integration allows for a multifaceted approach to wellness, addressing physical, mental, and emotional well-being through a combination of ancient healing traditions and contemporary wellness practices.

Fitness and Recovery Integration

Fitness centers and athletic clubs are recognizing the benefits of sauna and steam room therapies for enhancing athletic performance, promoting muscle recovery, and reducing the risk of injuries. Sauna sessions are often recommended as part of postworkout routines to aid in muscle relaxation and facilitate the removal of metabolic waste products.

Innovative spa facilities within fitness centers offer members access to dedicated sauna and steam rooms equipped with specialized features such as cold plunge pools, contrast showers, and heated loungers. These amenities support comprehensive recovery strategies that optimize physical conditioning and support long-term fitness goals.

The evolution of saunas and steam rooms within the global spa industry reflects a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and cultural authenticity. Enhanced Sports Performance and Accelerated Recovery

After enduring the challenges, such as the recently held Comrades Marathon, athletes rightly deserve meticulous care and thorough recovery methods to rejuvenate their bodies. One increasingly popular method gaining traction is the Ozone Sauna Treatment.

The Ozone Sauna Treatment presents athletes with a comprehensive strategy for recuperation. By integrating the advantages of ozone therapy with the soothing ambiance of a sauna session, it facilitates healing and revitalization across multiple dimensions.

Athletes can reap many benefits from ozone therapy - both for performance and recovery. It boosts the oxygenation of tissues, while also increasing the production of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP. This shortens recovery times from sports injuries and highintensity exercise and increases energy levels. It also assists with sore muscles and slows anaerobic fermentation, which combats the buildup of lactic acid in muscles.

Various studies have been conducted on the use of ozone technology for athletes, and results have shown that sessions can help increase an athlete's endurance, the capacity to build muscle, and even increases brain function. It also increases blood flow to the heart, which reduces the amount of strain your body takes during a workout.

One of the conducted studies showed that male runners who engaged in an average of 12- to 30minute sessions twice a week, immediately after intense running sessions, experienced a 32% increase in the distance they could run before reaching the point of exhaustion.

Another case study showed that a group of athletes who underwent frequent sessions in between training increased their physical fitness by 53.7%, as opposed

to the 11.55% of the group who did not.

These findings underscore the potential of ozone sauna treatment as a valuable adjunct to an athlete's training regimen, offering a range of benefits that contribute to enhanced performance and accelerated recovery.

In addition to its performance-enhancing effects, ozone sauna treatment also holds promise as a means of post-race recovery for athletes, such as those participating in the Comrades Marathon. The combination of ozone therapy and sauna heat creates a synergistic effect that can help alleviate muscle soreness, reduce inflammation, and promote relaxation, enabling athletes to recover more quickly and return to training with renewed vigor.

Lastly, a focused benefit is improved sleep by reducing stress and anxiety, leading to more rest and increased energy & improved performance. As one of Salvagente's clients recently shared her testimony: “Our whole family has been using the ozone steam sauna regularly for the past few weeks. All of us experienced an increase in sleep quality starting after the first session. A session in the sauna is very relaxing and a definite stress-buster!” Thank you! ~ Petra”

The therapeutic effects of ozone therapy are mediated, through several mechanisms:

1. Oxidative Stress: Ozone is a powerful oxidizing agent, meaning it can react with and neutralize harmful substances in the body, including toxins, pathogens, and free radicals. By inducing oxidative stress, ozone therapy may help eliminate these harmful agents and promote detoxification. So facilitating and speeding up the recovery of damaged cells.

2. Immune Modulation: Ozone therapy may

modulate the immune system by stimulating the production of cytokines and other immune mediators. This modulation could enhance the body's natural defense mechanisms and potentially improve immune function.

3. Improved Oxygenation: Ozone therapy may also enhance oxygen delivery to tissues by increasing the release of oxygen from hemoglobin and improving blood flow. This improved oxygenation could benefit various physiological processes, including cellular metabolism and tissue repair. So, accelerating the growth of muscle and tissue, while the higher levels of oxygen in the body increases the energy available for muscles to use.

Furthermore, ozone sauna treatment may aid in detoxification, helping to rid the body of metabolic waste products and environmental toxins accumulated during intense physical activity. By purifying the body at a cellular level, ozone therapy supports optimal physiological function, allowing athletes to perform at their peak and maintain overall health and well-being.

In conclusion, ozone therapy emerges as a promising adjunct to sports therapy, offering athletes a range of potential benefits. Its capacity to reduce inflammation, enhance blood flow, promote healing, and bolster immune function positions it as a valuable tool for optimizing athletic performance and accelerating recovery. However, athletes must approach ozone therapy with diligence, seeking guidance from qualified professionals and weighing potential risks against benefits. With proper oversight, ozone therapy holds the potential to revolutionize sports therapy, empowering athletes to reach new levels of excellence in their athletic pursuits.

Discover Hypochlorous Acid (HOCLI) with Soopa Skin

If you've never heard of hypochlorous acid (or HOCLI), you soon will. The ingredient isn't exactly new, it's been around for almost 200 years. It was the French chemist Antoine Jerome Balard (18021876) who first discovered HOCL as the infectionfighting compound found naturally in the white blood cells of the human body. HOCl was used thereafter by armies in World Wars I & II for the treatment of injured soldiers for wound cleaning, wound care and to neutralise chemical and fire burns. Bear in mind, the antibiotic penicillin was only discovered in 1928.

HOCl works to break down the cells that are creating an infection by destroying the cell membrane and it's DNA, thus halting it's replication or growth process. When used to cleanse the skin or to cleanse environment surfaces, HOCl solution works in much the same way.

So it's no surprise that this extremely versatile ingredient is being used in a number of different ways. HOCl has its important place in skin care, but it's also widely used in healthcare, the food industry and the farming industry as just a few examples.

HOCl can be stabilised for a period of about 12 months if stored in the correct packaging, kept below 25C and protected from UV rays. Because of its anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal properties, its uses in the clinic and in our homes is almost endless.

Problem Skins and Break-Outs

Because of its anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, HOCl is an excellent partner in your usual problem skincare routine. It calms and soothes the skin, while neutralising the p-acnes that causes infection. Its gentle nature means you can spray your skin frequently during the day to keep the

bacteria from repopulating and causing further breakouts. Its wound healing abilities mean your lesions clear up quicker and leave fewer marks on the skin.

Professional use: Spray the skin before and after doing extractions.

Home use: Spray the skin after cleansing, allow to dry, then follow with your usual skincare routine. Spray regularly during the day (every 1-2 hours depending on the severity of the breakout).

Post-Aesthetic Treatments

Slow wound healing and scars can result from prolong inflammation and skin tissue damage. HOCl's anti-inflammatory properties help reduce unwanted swelling and redness resulting in better wound repair. HOCl is also a powerful oxidising agent responsible for killing pathogens that can cause infection and scar formation.

Professional use: Spray on the skin before and after treatments such as chemical peels, laser, dermabrasion, dermaplaning, microneedling, microblading and tattoos.

Home use: Use on a clean skin twice a day and use regularly during the first 1-7 days post-treatment. The mist will cool the skin, keep it free of foreign pathogens, reduce redness and itching, and speed up the healing process.

HOCl for Nail on Hands and Feet

Warmth and moisture in your shoe is the perfect environment for fungal infections such as Athlete's Foot. Spray between your toes and in your shoes to kill the fungus.

Professional use: Spray HOCl on your clients hands or feet to neutralise bacteria or fungus.

Home use: Think frequency over quantity when you use HOCl. Nail fungus or Athlete's Foot can take some time to clear, so keep up your spraying routine, and be sure to spray the whole hand or foot to prevent cross-contamination.

HOCl for Beards and After Shaving

Beards can harbour millions of germs which can cause skin irritations, and possibly be responsible for impetigo for their partners. On average we touch our faces 23 times per hour, transferring germs from our hands to our faces, and potentially causing rashes and break-outs.

Whether you shave your face or shave your legs, we risk tiny cuts and irritations. HOCl will help reduce infection, calm and refresh delicate skin.

Professional use: Spray lightly on the area after shaving. Allow to dry.

Home use: Spray the skin after shaving to soothe and purify the skin. Spray the beard area at least 3-4 times a day for bear health

Not all HOCl products are created equal.

Packaging protects the integrity of the solution. Glass or opaque PET bottles with fine mists that don't rust easily, are the best options. The product remains stable for about 12 months, so don't trust claims for more than that. Ask questions: What is the pH, what is the ppm of the chlorine (parts per million) and what is the ORP (Oxygen-Reduction Potential)? How do you quickly tell if the product is fresh? It smells like swimming pool water! But this is a small price to pay for a “miracle in a bottle”.

Intentional Selfcare Strategies for Wellness Professionals

By Mandy Trollip - Founder of The Soul Khaya

As a wellness professional, embarking on a journey of intentional self-care and embodied wellness should not be viewed as a personal indulgence, but rather one which is both personally and professionally imperative.

Having spent over three decades dedicated to nurturing and guiding others through their wellness ambitions and intention's, I have learned that the ability to convey the wellness message to my guests unequivocally begins with my own sense of wellbeing.

I do concede that in our fast-paced, demanding, and stressful world it is not always easy, it requires commitment, and the awareness that the primary focus of nurturing and restoration begins from within.

What does intentional selfcare and embodied wellness and mean?

At its core it means feeling safe, being at home, connected and comfortable in your body. Feeling connected to your body allows you to be in the present moment.

The present moment is the only time when we can truly live, experience, and impact our lives. The past is gone, and the future is yet to come. The present is where life happens, it is where we have the power to shape our reality. It is the only moment where we can practice mindfulness, take a deep breath, and truly experience life as it is.

Feeling safe is our most basic human need. When we feel safe, we are open to performing at our best, on every level, but when challenged by threat or adversity our ancient safety mechanism, called the stress response, causes our bodies to shift into a defensive state to deal with the perceived danger.

Your body has one simple response to a threat, it does not differentiate! Your triggers may sometimes be obvious and sometimes not, for example encountering a dangerous situation of being threatened by a hooded stranger, being rejected by a loved one, receiving a message notification on your phone late at night, opening a bill, not making your monthly sales target, receiving a “look” from your boss, smelling a particular fragrance, or feeling a familiar uncomfortable body sensation or pain, all have the same chemical effect in your brain and body.

Here lies the challenge! The pressures of everyday life can feel like stress is your constant state. If your stress becomes relentless, the chemicals which are only intended for short bursts of stress response, begin to cause damage within the very circuits they were designed to balance.

Any threating situations, often before you have even registered them consciously as a threat, set into motion a cascade of physiological processes.

A quick and accessible calming tool to practice when you have been triggered, are feeling stressed or overwhelmed is the STILL method.

spa innovation

S - Stop and step away from the situation.

T - Temperature. Lower you body temperature, splash cool water onto your face and the back of your neck.

I - Inhale. Just breath, three long slow deep belly breathes.

L - Lay. Find a place to rest for 2 to 5 minutes by either lying or sitting down.

L - Launch - When you feel calm, grounded, and ready, then launch and reengage with the activity or person.

Beyond the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle by ensuring quality nutrition, sufficient sleep, and at the very least moderate fitness, there are diverse strategies and practices we can embrace and implement daily. These bring balance into our internal and external experiences and rewire the central nervous system into a state of safety and calm, ensuring this becomes a default response in challenging times.

It all begins by treating oneself with kindness, compassion and care, the same way in which we strive to treat our guests. It is worth noting too that the positive energies of gratitude, love, happiness, kindness, serenity, awe, and peace are indeed contagious.

As an alternative to our high intensity lifestyles, and to counteract the effects of our demanding industry, active REST could be an ideal solution for wellness professionals with constraints on their time. A careful selection of the below strategies may well manifest restoration and rebalance on every level.

Physical REST

• Sleep - go to bed an hour earlier than normal.

• Nap - take a 20-minute nap during the day on off days/weekends.

• Walk - 20 minutes a day.

• Gentle movement - 3 minutes of gentle body rocking and shaking.

• Hum - A regular daily humming routine can help enhance the parasympathetic nervous system and slow down sympathetic activation.

• Stay well hydrated - essential for every single function in the body.

• Make healthy and nutritious wholefood choices to suit your body and fit into your lifestyle.

Emotional REST

• Set boundaries for yourself and honour them! You do not have to be everything for everyone.

• Set boundaries for the people who form part of your life.

• Practice acceptance. If you cannot accept a situation in your life, make the choice to change it.

• Allow space into each day to unload and release your stress in some way or form.

Mental REST

• Have a daily gratitude practice.

• Take regular breaks during your day.

• Practice a brain dump activity. E.g. Journaling

• Schedule worry time

Sensory REST

• Allow yourself time to be still and quiet with no interruptions.

• Put you phone on DND

• Have a break from screen time /bule light. Especially before bed.

• Use the healing powers of aromatherapy, soak in a warm lavender EO bath, in candlelight, with soothing background music.

• Simply place your feet down on Mother Earth and ground yourself

• Use the healing power of frequency, music, and sound therapy.

Social REST

• Spend time alone

• Spend time with people who have a positive impact on you.

• Make choices which bring happiness and joy into your life.

• Learn to say no

Creative REST

• Engage in a hobby

• Make something without overthinking and being critical of yourself. Just immerse yourself.

• Be in nature and truly allow yourself to BE there.

Spiritual REST

• Pray.

• Meditate.

• Practice breathwork.

Intentional selfcare and embodied wellness practices should become part of the foundation of your basic health practices, they offer the opportunity to return to baseline wellness and safety as part of our everyday life. Ideally these practices should be a lifestyle and not merely reserved for when we encounter threats, triggers, and stresses. Afterall you are a wellness professional, and everyday should be a selfcare day!
