Dear Group Leader: Thank you for your interest in the National Constitution Center. It is never too early to start planning your trip. Whether this will be your first time visiting or a return trip, we hope you thoroughly enjoy all that our museum has to offer. The Center tells the story of the Constitution’s past and explains its current principles to help visitors like you and your group see that you will write the story of its future— and to inspire you to do just that. The Center is now presenting brand new iPod tours of Signers’ Hall. Your group will be able to experience the Center as never before with this dynamic, interactive tour. Meet the Signers introduces visitors to the men portrayed in the bronze statues in Signers’ Hall. You will be transported back to September 17, 1787 in Independence Hall where the delegates to the Philadelphia convention gathered to sign the Constitution. You will hear the delegates speak as you explore the room and learn what they were thinking after four months of working to create this world-changing document. In addition, the Center will host a special traveling exhibition in the fall. From October 5 through December 31, 2007, First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image will examine the evolving role of the first lady. Through historic photographs, period graphics, and personal artifacts—including their gowns— the exhibit traces the social and political accomplishments of many first ladies while highlighting the traditional responsibilities of the position. On-site programming and lesson plans will make this a highly engaging and teachable exhibition for your group. In order to further enhance your museum experience, the Center also offers themed museum packages for groups. Each package includes “Freedom Rising”, guided exploration of the National Constitution Center’s main exhibition, and a themed show. As you can see, the National Constitution Center has a lot to offer your group. Please make sure to book early for your first choice in date and time. Certain months fill up quickly and we want to ensure that you make the most of your visit. Thank you again for your interest in the National Constitution Center. We hope you will join us for a visit soon! Sincerely,
Joseph M. Torsella President and CEO

Experience “Freedom Rising” in the Kimmel Theater
A day at the National Constitution Center is a day your students are likely to remember for the rest of their lives. Why? Because at the National Constitution Center, students will come to understand the freedoms and struggles of our great nation by participating directly in fun, exciting activities that engage their hearts and minds. Their journey will begin as soon as they step into the impressive Grand Hall Lobby, where they can take a moment to view the flags of all 50 states and territories displayed on the Grand Hall Overlook.
Grand Hall Overlook
From that grand space, your group will step into a more intimate setting—an exhibit that will immerse them in the sights and sounds of Philadelphia in 1787. With dramatic murals, soundtracks, and historic artifacts, our exhibit will draw students into the time when a new government was being formed around the revolutionary idea of a government for the people and by the people. The artifacts, which include teapots, toothbrushes, and children’s toys, were all discovered during construction on this very site and serve to bring home the fact that history is about individual people and how they lived.
EXPERIENCE “FREEDOM RISING” Next, your group will enter the Kimmel Theater, our state-of-the-art theater in the round. Here they will experience a thrilling multimedia performance of “Freedom Rising,” our award-winning production that tells the story of the U.S. Constitution—not only of how it was forged, but also of how its content has been challenged and augmented through social movements and the actions of brave individuals over time. A dramatic storyteller will take your students on a 17-minute journey from 1787 to the present, aided by a powerful soundtrack and spectacular images of historical moments presented on a 360degree screen. This powerful performance will not fail to move and inspire those who experience it.

ANENT AND CHANGING EXHIBITS
DeVos Exhibit Hall
MAIN EXHIBITS The DeVos Exhibit Hall, our main exhibit gallery, is your students’ next destination. There, they will have a chance to deepen their understanding of the Constitution and U.S. history through viewing artifacts and taking part in a wide range of interactive, multimedia exhibits. What they encounter within the hall will highlight for them the vital role that our Constitution plays in U.S. culture and history. In the first exhibit, the American National Tree, students will use touch screens to choose some celebrated and controversial Americans they would like to learn more about. Through listening, viewing, and reading the selection on each American, they will learn how individual citizens have altered the courts’ interpretation of U.S. constitutional history. From there, they will move on to view a range of artifacts dating from the birth of our nation in 1776 to the present, including a rare print of the Emancipation Proclamation signed by Abraham Lincoln (during its special exhibition dates) and the robe worn by Sandra Day O’Connor when she served on the Supreme Court. Your students can even put on a robe and claim their seats at the bench, where they can review court cases to see where they stand on constitutional issues.

Signers’ Hall
Their journey continues as they trace the history of U.S. presidents and learn how several presidents influenced the Constitution. Included in this exhibit are presidential artifacts that offer unique glimpses into the lives of our commanders-in-chief, such as the microphone used by Franklin D. Roosevelt for his famous fireside chats and the Hawaiian shirt and pith helmet that comprised the “Key West Uniform” worn by Harry Truman. Also included in this exhibit is a staged area where students can take the Presidential Oath of Office on camera. Might one of them become president one day? They can also take part in two of the most important civic actions in our country: voting and serving on a jury. After entering one of our simulated voting booths, each student can vote for his or her favorite American president. Students can sit in a genuine, twentieth-century jury box from Pennsylvania’s York County Courthouse and exercise their good judgment. Where else can young people experience some key responsibilities of American citizenship in such realistic yet playful ways?
SIGNERS’ HALL After encountering over 200 years of our nation’s struggles and triumphs regarding our essential freedoms, students can meet some of the people who laid the foundation of American government: our Constitution. Walk among the life-sized, bronze statues of the 42 delegates to the Constitutional Convention, who were present when the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787. If you support the Constitution, as 39 of the delegates did, sign the book located next to the statue of George Washington. Your signature will be preserved for posterity on one of the shelves that line the room.

Changing Exhibits First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image October 5 – December 31, 2007
Baseball as America February – May 2008
First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution, examines the evolving role of the First Lady. Through historic photographs, period graphics, and personal artifacts— including their gowns—the exhibition traces the social and political accomplishments of many first ladies while underscoring the traditional responsibilities of the position.
Baseball as America is an exceptional traveling exhibition that examines the widespread presence of baseball in American culture. The exhibition features 500 of the treasures of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum that have left Cooperstown to tour the country for the first time. It combines the “sacred relics” of the game, such as the balls, bats, and uniforms of some of baseball’s top players, with photographs and film clips for an interpretative, dynamic, and interactive experience.
This exhibition was developed by the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, Behring Center, and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service. First Ladies is made possible by A&E Network. This exhibition is presented locally by Macy’s.
The exhibition was organized by The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Cooperstown, New York. The national tour of Baseball as America is sponsored by Ernst & Young LLP.
Note: There is an additional $1 charge per person for groups for this exhibition.
The Kennedys: Portrait of a Family Photographs by Richard Avedon October 5 – December 2, 2007 Funding for this exhibition provided by Rudolf Eickemeyer Jr. Fund and CollinsDesign, an imprint of HarperCollins. (All changing exhibit admission prices are subject to change.)

The audience becomes a part of the action as the characters struggle with how each issue affects their everyday lives. Included in the performance are a debate between two students that erupts during a school assembly over whether saying the words “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance violates First Amendment rights; a struggle among young people and adults over questions of privacy and the rules of search and seizure in the context of our post-Columbine and post-9/11 world; and a sequence in which legal and illegal immigrants offer competing perspectives about access to and responsibilities of citizenship. Incorporating video, contemporary music, and current news broadcasts, this fast-paced performance involves the audience throughout and culminates by asking them to share their points of view on several timely issues.
