LUXURY ESCAPE Zaya Nurai Island, Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi’s exclusive luxurious gem on Zaya Nurai Island

We love the grandeur luxuries from the Middle East that give us a look at exclusive luxe community living. Nadia Zaal, the chief executive and co-founder of Zaya Retreats had designed a luxe retreat island with product designer, Drow of Drow Studio who joined forces with AW2 where the Paris-based architects responsible for a number of award-winning resort projects. We thank our Contributing Editor, Michelle Karam from Travel Junkie Diary (www. traveljunkiediary.com) for sharing with us her experience at Zaya Nurai Island (www.zayanuraiisland.com).

ituated along the pristine waters of the Arabian Gulf in Abu Dhabi, Zaya Nurai Island is an idyllic getaway, perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and truly relax. Before visiting this über exclusive island we were told that it has been dubbed “The Maldives of Abu Dhabi” - but why categorize it as such? A unique getaway, in our opinion should work on developing its own identity, rather than comparing itself to other great travel destinations.

OUR JOURNEY TO THE ISLAND Our journey took just over an hour from Downtown Dubai. Not wanting to make the long drive, we were extremely grateful for Careem, who sent a driver to bring us to the Welcome Center on Saadiyat Island. Fleets of speedboats that leave the mainland every half an hour provide direct access to Zaya they develop a booking system for speedboat transfers to avoid long waits for guests with reservations.) 3-course lunch menu with selected beverages priced at AED 350 per head with unlimited soft drinks, AED 450 with select house beverages and AED 650 with bubbly. Zaya Nurai can book Careem services for you directly upon placing a reservation. RESORT CONCEPT AND INSPIRATION The name Zaya Nurai was derived from the Arabic word Noor, meaning light. We saw this concept displayed throughout the island, as the spacious designs allowed light to pervade every aspect of the guest areas and villas. Zaya Nurai prides itself on “doing things differently,” as the staff (consisting of over 30 different nationalities) told me. It was apparent from speaking with the team as we toured the island via a buggy (no cars allowed!) that this is a concept the island truly encompasses. 14

BEACH RETREAT VILLA (32 ROOMS) We were invited to stay in a Beach Retreat, a spacious and classily designed villa with our own private perature controlled 30 degrees) looking out onto a (semi) private white sand beach. The 110 square meter space, we were told, was designed to blend into the land-

caught straight from the sea and herbs grown on site. For Breakfast, we dined at the Terrace, a French-style restaurant overlooking the Gulf, where we tasted the Spicy Shakshouka, Granola Encrusted Chocolate Brioche French Toast and Buttermilk Pancakes. Yum! We were treated to a 7 course dinner at Olive, the island’s Mediterranean inspired

surrounding beauty and tranquility of the environment. The interiors, designed by Etcetera Living, in cool grays and blues, did just that and matched perfectly with the color of the turquoise mangroves.

which included (our personal favourites) toasted Capellinni Pasta with Mushroom Carpaccio, Wayfu Beef Sirloin with a Peringueux sauce, and a White Chocolate Parfait garnished with angel hair, chocolate clay, and fresh berries.

Fitted out with all of the latest technology, such as Bose surround sound entertainment systems (we danced around the room for hours) and luxury amenities by Aqua di Parma, the one thing the room did not have was a clock, allowing for a complete loss of time and relaxation.

Our 24-hour butler service was also extremely helpful, available to meet our every need. In-room dining was delivered promptly to our Villa where we ate poolside. We tried the Jumbo Prawns, Burrata Salad, Smoked Salmon Sandwich and Gourmet Burger from the Beach Burger Bar.

SPA AND RECREATION As the spa has still not opened, we had the option to have a Zayan wellbeing massage in our room and it was truly incredible, as we both fell straight asleep. Our masseuse explained that Zaya Nurai takes a holistic and contemporary approach to wellness, lying in the attempt to strike a balance between physical, mental and emotional health. generous spaces provide the ultimate in comfort. If you are looking for something even more spacious, 6 bedroom Beach Estate Villas are dotting the perimeter of the island; each with its own private beach and undisturbed views of the Arabian Gulf. Note: We were told that each 20 million dirham plus home has been purchased, with owners now working to customize their interior design elements.

An interview with Jason Brooks London Sketchbook by Jason Brooks, published by Laurence King Publishing is a stunning gift book that brings the big smoke to life through beautiful illustrations. It is the follow-up to Jason Brooks’ hugely successful Paris Sketchbook. Part guide book, part illustrated journal, this whimsical take on the swinging city will appeal to both London lovers and fashionistas. Jason Brooks’ sumptuous new book takes you by the hand and leads you through cobbled streets and leafy garden squares (stopping off at coffee shops and bustling markets along the way). Be escorted to eateries and transported down the Thames. Skirt through London’s iconic shopping streets, taking in galleries and museums as you go. London Sketchbook is a luxurious gift book that explores and encapsulates the essence of the capital city through gorgeous imagery. From the West End to the Square Mile and from Liberty to hipster hang-outs, Brooks explores modern-day London through his unique visual his gorgeous fashion illustrations, which feature regularly in Vogue and ELLE, travel has been a recurrent theme in Brooks’ work and, with this new volume, his picturesque adventures continue to amuse and inspire. Jason Brooks began working regularly for British Vogue after winning the Vogue Sotheby’s Cecil Beaton Award for Fashion Illustration. Jason has drawn at the couture shows in Paris for the Independent newspaper, those in New York for Visionaire and London Fashion Week for ELLE. Jason chats to Sha Anderson as we get a glimpse of his inspiration and amazing talent. SA: How has the digital world changed your work methods? JB: I began making digital images in the late 1980’s and Vogue published one of my illustrations using computers as a medium in around 1991, so I took to them quite early on. I’ve always loved drawing and been interested in exploring new and different tools to make pictures (as a child I was an etcha-sketch addict for a while!) so playing with computers seemed quite a natural thing to do alongside all the more traditional media I used particularly pastel but these kind of effects are wonderfully easy to achieve digitally so I moved more and more er anywhere in the world so that suddenly made the marketplace for my illustrations expand and I saved a fortune in couriers, mounting board and tracing paper. SA: How would you describe your illustration style? JB: At the moment my illustration style changes quite widely depending on who I am working with and the look I want to achieve. For both London Sketchbook and Paris Sketchbook I used a range of media and styles to try and capture all kinds of textures, atmospheres and subjects that I discovered in each city. My work is all about sharing my view of the world and hopefully making people feel pleasure in that shared experience. I can’t help being a bit of a chameleon in terms of my artwork, I’m always searching for how to do it better but hopefully that keeps it relevant and interesting-standing still would be deadly. I do seem to keep returning to drawing beautiful far from what I want to achieve.

INTERVIEW FEATURE Graphic artist and Fashion illustrator Jason Brooks

INTERVIEW FEATURE Graphic artist and Fashion illustrator Jason Brooks By Sha Anderson. SA: What are your favourite materials to work in self using often? JB: A lot of my pictures start with drawing using pencil or pen on paper, particularly my digital work ironically, so I use Conté graphite 3B pencils or Palomino Blackwing pencils to sketch out ideas. I also a have a favourite pen which is a bit of a trade secret which I buy in bulk and I love note books and sketchbooks so have a collection in all different shapes and sizes. Without advertising too much, Leuchtturm Hay, Daler, Fabriano and Moleskine all make wonderful sketchbooks but I also pick up old autograph books, photograph albums, ledgers etc. as they sometimes have wonderful paper to draw on. Although I sometimes get referred to as a ‘vector artist’ for print and online I use Photoshop which is non-vectors and usually scan in my drawings and sketches for ‘post production’.

my shoulder but it really was truly a memorable and beautiful experience. With London I was able to stay with friends and I knew the city better, but really getting to grips with modern London and exploring new areas really made me appreciate deeply what an extraordinary place it is. Putting the books together and illustrating ly love every second. SA: Would you like to be illustrating another Sketchbook based on an Asian city? JB: At the moment I am working on New York which is completely different again but I would absolutely love to try and capture an Asian city. Tokyo seems the obvious choice, it might require more glossy paper, with all those lights but I think that would be incredible. I love drawing at markets in particular so I’m sure I would love all the new and exotic things I would see and de-

an illustrator and it’s a lifelong struggle to get better at this one skill. When I look back I am and I’m always looking to create better work and improve what I do. That itch of dissatisfaction and curiosity is one of the things that keeps me motivated. I have also been lucky to live in a stable and peaceful part of the world, and have worked very, very hard so that has lead to the little bit of success I have had so far. Still a long way to go and a lot to do! SA: What inspires you ? JB: Inspiration can come from anywhere and cities are certainly places packed with inspiring sights and experiences. too, so I would love more opportunities to show what I can do, and to work with exciting people. I’m also getting to grips with Instagram (@jasonbrooksart) which is inspiring both in terms of discovering people and in creating little squares of imagery that work in this format. Again, something I hope to get better at.

JB: My favourite part of creating these books is the adventure and pleasure of travel itself and the challenge of sharing that pleasure - so I spend a month or so over several trips in each city really exploring and recording as much as I can. For Paris Sketchbook I rented apartments, made appointments to draw at certain places, went to the supermarket, travelled around on the Metro and generally tried to become as much of a local as I could. It was quite hard work with a huge amount of walking in all weathers and seasons carrying books and materials over

wo years ago, style expert and blogger Jennifer Scott delighted fans and followers with Lessons from Madame Chic: 20 Stylish Secrets I learned While Living in Paris. In it, she introduced readers to simple style tricks like the liberating 10-item wardrobe, Le No-Makeup look, and countless other daily techniques designed to empower readers to emulate Parisian elegance and simplicity. Now, Madame Chic is back, and this time she’s turned her tasteful eye to life at home. In AT HOME WITH MADAME CHIC (Simon & Schuster, October 7, 2014, $23.00), Jennifer explains the morning send-off need not be chaotic, it’s possible to look stylish with minimal time and effort, a little forethought makes it possible to serve a home-cooked dinner every night, and details like music and scented candles can set the tone for the whole family’s evening. Organized by the pleasures that can be found throughout the day, this charming, helpful book is full of ideas, playlists, recipes, beauty routines, and advice that can turn an irritating day into an enjoyable experience. Divided into two primary sections, “Chez Vous” and “Les Routines De La Journée,” Scott’s book teaches readers how to move beyond the seeming mundanity of housework and approach life at home with intention and poise. Each chapter unveils surprisingly

simple tips for how to streamline routine and de-mystify Parisian sophistication. For example, in a chapter titled “The Pleasures of the Afternoon,” Scott proposes solutions for midday exhaustion, perfume applied in the morning, taking shoes off to walk through the grass, and smiling unexpectedly at passersby. In “The Pleasures of the Evening,” Scott outlines precisely how to make every family meal special with tricks as simple as clearing the table of non-dinner-related material, using dishes even if you’re plating takeout, and encouraging the use of traditional table manners. Scott passes on her lessons with the same self-deprecating humor and infectious enthusiasm that has drawn 15,000+ subscribers to her website The Daily Connoisseur (www.dailyconnoisseur.com).
