Contrasts
The natural world in all its manifestations has always brought joy and renewal in my life and in my work as an artist. But we also live in the world of human beings in personal relationships and as part of a bigger societal context which affects all humans no matter how different they are from each other. Human actions run the gamut from the positive to the negative physically, emotionally, creatively, in the life of the mind and in many other ways…many shine in the light but some live in the shadows or emerge from deep darkness. Deep down in myself those dark human actions have always spurred an enormous outrage, dismay and near non-comprehension. They have an all-encompassing name: humans’ inhumanity towards other human beings. It has always existed. And right now, millions of people suffer from wars, violence, poverty, hunger, displacements, and political policies indifferent to their plight… This body of works attempts to highlight the contrast in my mind between the wonder and transcendence of the natural world and the current suffering resulting from human beings’ inhumanity towards other humans. Images of some of my favorite places in nature—deserts, the night, and mainly in this exhibit, water— accompany contemporary images of humans in dire circumstances. It is the light of human generosity that will give them hope. — Anne Slaughter

Anne Slaughter
Anne Slaughter was born in Belgium in 1934. She received her BA/MA magna cum laude from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and later pursued art classes at the University of Virginia, the Corcoran and Virginia Commonwealth University. She was one of the founding members of the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville. She showed for over a decade with Troyer, Fitzpatrick & Lassman Gallery in Washington D.C. and with Les Yeux du Monde since 2002. Slaughter has exhibited extensively in many solo and juried exhibitions, and her work is in private, corporate and museum collections in the United States and abroad. It has been reviewed in national magazines and newspapers, including the Washington Post and Southern Accents, among others. Her retrospective at Second Street Gallery and Les Yeux du Monde in 2006 was accompanied by the book Terra Incognita: Anne Slaughter, Forty Years. At age seven, in 1942, Slaughter fled Brussels with her mother and brother, first by train and then walking all night from occupied to unoccupied France, beginning their six-month journey to England to join her father. This experience along with the memories of her return to the bombed-out city after the war resonate throughout her life’s work. In Contrasts, these memories surface again as she evokes migration and the injustice of walls built to separate us and systems that do not benefit all. In contrast to her monumental depictions of “humans’ inhumanity toward others” seen in The Wall of Broken Dreams and The Wanderers, Slaughter also offers Hope in the painting of the same title and in her evocations of sublime land and seascapes. In part because of her layering and surface materiality as well as her reduction of the image to its most essential, these paintings are not only timely, but also timeless and universal. — Lyn Bolen Warren Director
