DISSERTATION

Brasilia is a result of the Modern Movement architecture experience. My research tried to comprehend how that urban space influence the citizens life, mostly the pedestrian aspect. In consequence, how that involvement create an image of the city that get bind to the subjects feelings and memory. We can then define how their social quality of life is, detecting coldness, vacuity and isolation. Different studies found relevant overviews on Brasilia pedestrian practice and their reflections on emotions and feelings. The result of that research underline how invisible and immaterial are the aspects that need to be inquired. The silent effects emulate Brasilia’s morphology. The causes are: *spatial segregation of the lower classes; *social isolation; *fragile identity; *lack of communal space;

SALVADOR

PEDESTRIAN LIFE: The city has an open look to the horizon because of the principles it was built. The green is ubiquitous and there is an unitary settlement. Pedestrian life has been projected for a local scale and not on urban scale.

PEDESTRIAN LIFE: Similar to the European cities, there is one Old Town. It is a typical Brazilian colonial city that shares morphological and architectural similarities with most European cities.

“Entrequadra” are facilities area between the “Superquadras”(residential area). The commercial Entrequadras use to be cut by driveway paths and comb parking. We can count 56 areas like that, 28 for every wing, all of them look almost the same and are uniformly distributed on the city.

The city of Salvador contains colonial characteristics architecture, that remains European style. It is a city that attracts a lot of tourism, due to the Old Town and the festive atmosphere. The residences are alternate with the facilities; the pedestrian area communicates with the pedestrian routes, which invites walks.

In those pictures, Pub & Restaurant “Beirute” by day and by night. It is one of oldest restaurant in the city as well as one of the most important meeting point. It is still a private place though. Since the constant repetition of Superquadras and Entrequadras models, there is a big lack of urban meeting points, that could give inducements to the city, adept to be characteristic and identi fiable.

The Old Town, despite the slope, is a very visited place, both day and night, by the citizens as well as the tourists. Besides the Old Town, there are other meeting squares on contemporary district, as Rio Vermelho. There are some particular cases, even in the America Continent, where we can find this phenomenon, because some cities have inherited the European way to build.

URBAN PARK WINTER GARDEN

ADVANCED ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

That experiment contains part of my first research about public space. I have been attracted by the ancient Roman way life. During the Roman Empire, before Constantine, it was usual to build a lot of public spaces, more than now, because demands and needs were made in different circumstances. For example: Both water and entertainment was something to find outside from home. Today, having infrastructures and electronics stuff, we need less public spaces. In Europe we do not feel so much that kind of need because our cities has inherited from ancient way to build cities. Is totally different if we think about the America Continent. Their cities are mostly car’s dependent and don’t use public spaces as European cities do. This research is about a communal space. Is an open-hall-terrace space divided in 3 floors, in the middle of an Urban Park. There you can do some sport, Yoga or stretching when is raining or when the Sun is too strong. Is a protected space in the Winter and a bower place in the Summer. There is also one open Theater to play music or have fun with some comedy or drama actors. Some mirror pools to contain the romanticism of lovers.

ARCHITECTURAL TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT

Even that experiment contains part of my research of public space. The idea is to make possible to enjoy a service, like a lounge bar in a Park. It is a pleasure stop, where you can stay for a while, take a healthy drink enjoying the green landscape. During a bad weather, if someone is running in the park for example, it could be useful an arrangement where you can comfortably waiting till the rain passes away. On that project, I tried to make workable something that is not too intrusive in an urban park. Outside, overhead in the front, there is a led illumination, usable as TV projection as well during important game events. The structure is build with steel and reinforced concrete, and the foundation is made by iglo technology. The Stand is covered by glass and concrete.

ANCIENT ARCHITECTURAL CONSERVATION AND HERITAGE

This is the ancientest construction of Fabrica di Roma, where all around is developed the fortress. We do not know exactly when the original church has been built, but we can estimate it between XI-XII century. It has been transformed many times, because of the needed circumstances and some earthquakes. Now it is totally abandoned, inside became a sort of warehouse. It is not a Vatican propriety anymore. We made a full analysis of all over the front, back and inside. Then we decided just to clean it with a maintenance of the structure. We realized it was not a good place to start some activity, because the structure is small and it is not easy to get some infrastructures in a place where everything is ancient.
