The program offers opportunities for study and practical work which, through an understanding of the primary elements of architectural composition, will guide the students to the project itself. The aim is to understand the close link between architectural work and regional context. The area of the analysis this year is Locarnese. The course presents a reading aimed at understanding the principles of settlement and the concepts that underlie every thought in the transformation of the landscape. The studio aims to provide the tools to develop a consistent methodology of architectural composition, on the scale of the building and the urban context. The general framework is presented by the comparison between public places, public spaces, private places and residential spaces. The contemporary territory is the expression of everyday living, but also the deposit of all the sediments and layers of history and memory.

HOUSING COMPLEX - SINGLE APARTMENT The housing complex is composed by three buildings, that count 33 flats in total. Every flat was assigned to a student. It is located in the city of Locarno (Switzerland), where the nucleus of the old city ends and the new part of the city starts. The housing complex is composed by different shapes and heights in order to fit to the surrounding context.

ATELIER BLUMER BSc1

Lecturer Riccardo Blumer Assistants Tommaso Alessandrini Matteo Borghi Claudia Broggi

The course entwines some of the major themes of architecture: constructional expertise through a knowledge of the relations between materials and mechanics; the use of geometry as a language of abstraction underlying the design of forms; the observation of nature as a place where time, matter and physics interact in the formation of organic and inorganic processes constituting the morphology of beauty; the manifestation of individual expressiveness with the assistance of specific literary sources and the public vocal expression of one’s own suggestions. The workshop introduces some elements of that process which shapes the ability to distinguish and relate to the physical and social world, in line with one’s choice of profession to which education should always be related.

Looking, seeing, observing, representing. The exercises proposed were based on these four verbs which form a thread linking a logical sequence to be followed each time we wish to translate a datum of reality into its possible representation. Looking (directing one’s gaze to see) is the most general action of our relationship with phenomenal reality. Seeing (perceiving concrete reality with one’s eyes), is the voluntary result of the preceding act; it is the choice that makes it possible to establish a relation based on purposeful decisions. Observing (considering carefully) is an exploration, which approaches the datum of reality, setting it at the centre of our attention.

The course, organized as lectures and practical work, aims to develop in students the ability to interpret, represent and design an object through the correct use of the instrument of drawing in two-dimensional form. It will deal with the rules, procedures and techniques which make it possible to construct a graphic model of reality in the two dimensions of the drawing so as to be accurate and uni- versally legible. Particular attention will be devoted to the relation between the object and the space, the environment to which it is related, and between the object and people, the users, which it has to relate to. The objectives of the course are to identify the methods and instruments for the two-dimensional representation of the architectural project.

Each studio session will work on a housing project, one of the commonest and most representative topics in professional practice, on which the students have acquired a certain personal experience. During the first the semester the detached house will provide an opportunity to deal with a personalized program, with the specifics of landscape and topography, as well as the materialization of architecture and the constructional detail. The following semester will be devoted to the study and analysis of the exclusive and specific issues bound up with collective housing. A course in the Theory of Housing and a seminar in Construction and Design will complete the studio program.

Villa Belvedere The project plans the creation of a research centre for artists inside the Park of the Delta del Po, in the region of Veneto in Italy. The planned building is a villa, that is inspired to the villas projected and realised by Andrea Palladio in Veneto. The project itself reports with the landscape characterised by the presence of water and embankments. In fact the villa is attached to the embankment allowing the sight directly on the canal. The construction material is the brick, that is typical in these zones of Italy.

The course consist of the representation of a topic in a precise location through a series of conceptual diagrams related to the perception of the morphological and conceptual site. Organized as lectures and practical work, it aims to develop in students the ability to interpret, represent and design an object through the correct use of the instruments of drawing in three dimensions. The course examines the rules, procedures and techniques which make it possible to construct a graphic model of reality in the three dimensions. SISTEMS AND PROCESSES OF THE CONSTRUCTION BSc2

Lecturer Franz Graf

Assistants Britta Buzzi Carlo Dusi

The course is conceived as a preparation for the building project and as a conceptual re ection on the subject of construction. The di erent building systems, reduced to models, will be presented by retracing the radical changes they underwent last century. Construction techniques will be analysed. Parallel with the lectures the students will conduct a constructional analysis involving interpretation of a theme and relating construction, space and architecture to each other. On the basis of the plans, constructional details and other documents, students will present the analytical axonometrical redesign or the model of part of a twentieth-century building.

PROJECT AND CONSTRUCTION BSc2

Lecturer Carlo Nozza Assistants Carlo Dusi

The course is structured in two phases and seeks to introduce students to a method of critical analysis of some examples of built architecture, then drawing from it some useful information for the study of architectural design by analogy with the theme dealt with in the workshops. The first stage invites students to deal concretely with the redesign of some details related to typical recently completed buildings chosen in coordination with the design studios. The purpose is to make students aware of the consequences of certain architectural choices and construction materials. The second phase will accompany students in the study of the constructive aspects of their studio project through individual interviews.
