LA RINASCENTE 5th Floor Piazza Fiume, Rome - 2011
The request by La Rinascente was to design the fifth floor of the historic building by Franco Albini in Piazza Fiume. It is the floor that expose lingerie and children fashion, so the project began with a research about the right furniture for that kind of merchandise.
The aim of the project is to create a space full of light, with a great use of white, lights mirrors and shape that could reflect this sense of brightness. The colours and the materials for everything are chosen to provide a sense of elegance and wellness.

UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY Columbia University Campus Manhattanville, New York - 2015
The project consists of the definition of the masterplan for the new Columbia University Manhattanville Campus in Harlem, huge cultural and commercial centre in the northern part of Manhattan. The island is structured by an orthogonal grid that defines the hierarchies of the urban layout, but, in the same
time, is indifferent to the natural orography of the soil. The project is situated in an area that is absolutely exceptional for the behaviour of the Manhattan grid but also for the not-flat soil that characterized it. The proposed scenery is to invert the roles: what used to be caesura became an architectural object.

THE SOIL The ground floor of the new Columbia Campus is designed as a place where everything could happen. The spaces are not differentiated as serving and served but by a height-hierarchy: main spaces are the highest ones. These open spaces are spaced out by redbrick volumes that contain the most “close functions (as auditorium, shops and restaurants.

CITY IN THE UNIVERSITY Columbia University Campus Manhattanville, New York - 2015
The purpose of the project is to bring the variety and the complexity of the city inside the academic building. In fact, the ground floor is completely public and accessible directly from the Broadway and 125th Street, and from the great riverside park, and all the spaces of the three
great functions that are included in the building (Academic Conference Centre, Columbia Business School and Lenfest Centre for the Arts) with their vitality are shown by the volumes and the glass set in this continuous space.

THE WALLACH ART GALLERY The Wallach Art Gallery is designed as the last space before the park and the highway: the openings on the walls frame the background making it be a sort of artwork.
In this way the viaduct is not only a feature to cross the depression: is an architectonic object to enjoy from the outside but also from the gallery.
11
THE MAIN AUDITORIUM The Academic Conference Centre identifies itself in the great main auditorium. It has designed as a huge volume that raises over a study hall allowing the light penetrate into this one.
This volume wants to be a sort of monument that denounces the beginning of the new Columbia Manhattanville Campus.

THE BALLET Scenery Northern Italy - 2014
Northern Italy is a contact point between the South and the North of Europe but it hasn’t got a clear identity: it’s not as Berlin, London or Paris that works as focal points of the neighbouring areas. The aim of the project is to make of Northern Italy a reference point without creating a unique pole or monument. In fact this solution would delete the real vocation of this
place, which lives of its heterogeneity. The project designs Northern Italy as a sort of market place, a space where different realities meet each others. In this sense the strategy is to densificate the borders and let the centre be built by a weave of small scale controlled by the local productive unit.

RE-CYCLE MAMELI Mameli Barrack Milan - 2014
The project that affects the ex Barrack Mameli, tries to define an intervention way that claims the use of the public areas donated to the city rather than destined to the more common speculative intervention. Examining the nowadays economic situation, the project faces the period between the dis-using of the area and a possible future re-contraction operating in a low-cost
and totally-reversible way. Three are the strategies: alteration of the soil, addition of micro-architectures to the existing ones and creation of a huge conservatory as a hub for new start up. The aim is to re-activate the area trying to stop the possible future construction.

POINT, LINE, SURFACE General Masterplan for the Ex Guinness Area Dublin- 2012
The project designs a new masterplan for the ex Guinnes Factory Area in Dublin. The areas is characterized by a sort of a “L” shape, is set very close to the Liffey River and the train station and is enclosed by a redbrick wall. The request was to project a residence area and some public space and the aim was to create a “surface” that
is a great flexible public square from which have origins a “line”, that is the river-font, designed as a public space with a new flooring, stairs, sittings and trees, and “points” as the different kind of accommodation set in the two residential areas, enclosed by the redbrick wall which controls the accesses and the collective space.

ZIP IT, SESTO General Masterplan for the City Sesto San Giovanni- 2011
The aim of the project is to find strategies to solve the urban problems of the Sesto San Giovanni city. In this case the city presents three poles, the North Park, the city centre and the ex Falck area retrained by Renzo Piano Building Workshop, divided by three great infrastructure: Fulvio Testi Boulevard, Antonio Gramsci Boule-
vard with the huge Buozzi overpass, and the railway. The project wants to operate in two ways: deleting this three caesuras with a different strategy for each one and creating a “green corridor which crosses all the city linking all the public spaces and small parks with tree lines and alterations of the soil.

HOUSING IN BOVISA Tranformation of the ex Montedison area Bovisa, Milan - 2012
The request for this area was to create a social and student housing in an ex industrial area between the train station and the university. The project consists in five social housing building, one student residence and a series of terraced houses. The shape of the buildings close to the Bovisasca Street is designed to create an urban continuous facade and to
be opened to the interior of the area, where are set the public spaces. The terraced houses have the access directly from the public space and are protected from the railway by a sort of “green gap thank to which the tram is allowed to reach the station quote.

VISPA Competition “Schulanlage Walka mit Auditorium” Zermatt, CH - 2016
The competition requested to design a new school for 600 students right in the centre of Zermatt in Switzerland. The complex program required a kindergarten, primary school, day care, gym hall, auditorium, community rooms and reorganization of external areas around the building. The ‘V’ form foyer reflects the Zermatt valley combining culture and education, two crucial components of a student’s upbringing. The jagged facade profile was inspired by the rugged mountains of the area with the upper part of the window jutting out to provide sun protection and assisted by a concealed shading system. The building consists of two main bodies; a long and narrow upper structure includes the kindergarten,
primary schools, day care, staff rooms and library and sits on a wider structure which has the community rooms, canteen, gym hall, auditorium and foyer. The whole building is accessible by neighbouring schools and community. A central u-shaped stair provides access to all levels and is opposite a breakout area also on every level with benches and planters for students to use as a waiting area. The entry foyer provides a visual and physical connection between the auditorium, canteen, community rooms and gym hall and transparency between the school and community programs. The auditorium is able to expand by using the foyer stairs, which connect the upper level canteen and community rooms.

RHEINPARK Feasibility study and proposal for the open space Basel, CH - 2016
The Rheinpark is a big park which runs along the Rhein river in Birsfelden, a city in the countryside of Basel, Switzerland. At the moment the park is a sweep of grass with some historic trees. The client requested a feasibility study for a densification of the area and a concept of the open spaces. The first step was a deep analysis of the area and the city of Birsfelden and then, the concept has
been developed: the parcel is seen as the confluence between tcity and nature; the city strip starts whith an hard surface and becomes green with some vegetable gardes which could be use by the tenents of the apartmens or rented by the citizens of Birsfelden, the nature strip is more organic and “wild, and could preserve the local flora and fauna.

APARTMENT IN ROME Private Residence Piazza del Popolo, Rome - 2016
The request by the client was to design the interiors of the existing apartment to guarantee spaces which could be more appropriate to the nowadays lifestyle and, in the meantime, increase quality and value of the apartment. The project began with a deep analysis of the existing spaces, and of the requests of the client. Than, the internal layout of the apartment has been rethought, considering the flows and the needs of the people who would use the spaces: a division between day-area and night-area has been provided, with a “jolly” room which could be use as an office or a guest bedroom.
In the west area of the apartment is set the day-area with an open kitchen, a dining room and a living area towards an historic fire which the client wanted to maintain. In the night-area, designed as separable with some other walls, are set two large singe room and a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom. For a major efficiency a “service block” is thought, which includes the en-suite bathroom, the main bathroom and a service toilet for guests or for the office.

NEVICATA ‘14 Competition “Atelier Castello” - 1st Prize Piazza Castello, Milan - 2014
The competition was about the transformation of Piazza Castello, the square nearby the Sforza Castle of Milan for Expo 2015. The project image the square covered by snow: Everything can happen. Snow is considered as a sort of origin for every kind of path, shape or use. In this sense “Nevicata ‘14” is white, covered by “calcestre”,
the same material present in the park back to the castle, and here everything can happen: below the paving there is a network of water, gas and electricity connected with sewers that are set everywhere. Here everyone can put the equipments furnished in the little storehouses present in the square

To: Whom it may concern
I met Letizia Pasello during her studies at “Scuola di Architettura Civile” part of the University “Politecnico di Milano”.
She was one of my students in the course “Architecture and Construction Design Studio 2”, part of the Master of Science degree in Building Architecture, and she also developed her thesis project with me as supervisor. In the last two years she worked on the design of two projects: the Masterplan for Columbia University’s expansion in Manhattanville, New York, and, more in detail, the Business School, the Academic Conference Center and the Lenfest Centre for the Arts for that Campus. Her works consisted in an urban design proposal and a detailed study of the building.
She developed knowledge and capabilities on everything regarding the design of academic buildings, from research on the site to its details, integrating concepts of technology, design, structural engineering and building management.
She worked and studied hard to make her best, often going beyond the expectations, demonstrating her learning abilities in the subject and obtaining one of the highest grade among her classmates.
For what has been in my experience, I can say that Letizia is most suitable to pursue a successful career in the architectural field.
Sincerly, Prof. Arch. Francesca Battisti
