INTRODUCTION

TRANG NGUYEN 22/11/1994 I’m Trang Nguyen, a graduate student at Politecnico di Milano studying Master of Science in Architecture - Built Environment Interiors. This course gives me opportunities to practice architecture in different scales. Architecture is a vast subject containing a variety of aspects. For me, an architect is a person who defines the relationship between these aspects; connecting the city with buildings, connecting buildings as a whole with each room inside them. The relationships are different based on each specific project. Then, make sure the flow of life run smoothly from the small scale to the big scale, from the private life to the community one.

Industrial buildings in the XXI century

O N E R O O F

DETROIT WATER-FRONT DISTRICT Detroit is a well-known industrial city with architects Albert Kahn and Julius Kahn who improved the construction system inside a factory named the Kahn system. By their advanced reinforced concrete, three main innovations in factory construction happened at that time: Bigger spans, one roof building (the three-dimensional concrete frame makes this possible), and the combination of steelash window and concrete framing was used for the first time. The three factors made brilliant daylight inside the factory following higher worker productivity and created favorable conditions for the development of the moving assembly line. That’s what happened in the 20th century when we’ve dreamt about the machine and manufacturing system. Without that dream, we definitely don’t have those wonderful innovations. In the 21st century, we pay more attention to the environment. We want to live conveniently with both artificial cutting-edge technology and natural features. The image of an innovative industrial area with the emblematic chimneys whom we used to be proud of, became an environmental disaster. People want to see more green in that image. A similar tendency has happened with Detroit. Therefore, the current trend in architecture is to combine nature and human living. Unlike a machine, nature doesn’t need us. However, we need nature. We want to see the sunlight comes through our window, we love to feel a summer breeze in the garden, and those poetic autumn falling leaves are great sources of inspiration for a huge number of romantic songs. If we want to live with nature, let’s create a convenient box, put it near a tree, and live inside it. The project also imitates a one-roof-building of Albert Kahn.

D R A W I N G S Drawings are artworks. A drawing is where life meets technology, which shows science and nature simultaneously. My favorite part in architecture is spending time with them.
