EXPLORE ITS RAW YET ROMANTIC LANDSCAPE, IT’S ABUNDANCE OF WALKING TRAILS AND MOUNTAIN PATHS AND WANDER THE SHORES OF THE MANY RIVERS, LAKES AND COUNTLESS BEACHES. BLUE FLAG BEACHES

OF DONEGAL

Donegal is the county that boasts the most Blue Flag beaches in Ireland, along with the longest coastline in the country. You will never find yourself far from a beach in Donegal! Whether you prefer long stretches of golden sands or small, inlet coves, there are literally hundreds of beaches to explore. Here we have provided information on some of the Blue flag beaches you will find along Donegal’s wild and raw coastline.

Bundoran Blue Flag Beach

Located around 250m north of Bundoran, this is a sandy beach facing Donegal Bay that is popular with surfers. The beach is life guard patrolled during the bathing season between June and August and duty times can be found on the information board on the beach.

Carrickfinn Blue Flag Beach

Carrickfinn beach is an extensive sandy beach backed by extensive dunes and is located close to the charming village of Annagry, a Gaeltacht area, full of the culture and heritage of this unique region. The grasslands around the bay are full of spectacular wildflowers in spring and summer and the beach is a

safe place for bathing with all the facilities the family will need for the perfect beach day. Lifeguards are on duty from June until September.

Culdaff Blue Flag Beach

Culdaff beach on the Inishowen Peninsula is a long sandy beach popular with surfers, with a number of surf schools operating here. The long sandy beach is popular for swimming, walking and other water sports and is only 50m from Culdaff village. The two beaches here, the small beach and the big beach, can be very busy during the summer months. Lifeguards are on duty from June to September.

Downings Blue Flag Beach

Downings beach takes pride of place in the sheltered Sheephaven Bay, near Downings village, in the Gaeltacht area on the Rosguill Peninsula. The beach is particularly popular with windsurfers. It is a busy beach during the peak season. It is also wheelchair accessible and close to the village and its shops and toilet facilities. Lifeguards are on duty from June until September.

Fintra Blue Flag Beach

Located on the South West coast of Donegal, Fintra is approximately 3kms from Killybegs. The wide, rural beach has fabulous views of Donegal Bay as far as Benbulben mountain in county Sligo. The sandy beach is backed by dunes and grassy hills and is perfect for a family day out building sandcastles and playing beach games or simply just splashing in the waves. Lifeguards are on duty from June until September.

Stroove Blue Flag Beach

Located on the east coast of the Inishowen Peninsula, Stroove beach is just a few miles north of Greencastle and is adjacent to two lighthouses. It is a relatively small beach and is great for a family picnic or a brisk walk on the Inishowen Head Walk. Visitors are asked to ‘Leave No Trace’ and take all rubbish home with them as under the PII PIO programme, Donegal County Council does not provide litter bins at this beach. Lifeguards are on duty from June to September.

WILD IRELAND

Step back in time to an ancient woodland inhabited by wolves, bears, lynx and wild boar! Located in an ancient Celtic rainforest, Wild Ireland offers sanctuary to many animals which have been exploited, abused and hunted to the point of extinction, providing a safe space for these animals to recover, both physically and mentally.

Wild Ireland focuses on animals that were once native to Ireland so they are perfectly adapted to the environment. Brown bears, European wolves and lynx all now live among other animals in large natural habitats, back together in the Irish forest for the first time in thousands of years. The lakes are home to swans, geese, ducks and even an otter!

Children can take the fairy trail around the forest, listen to tales of Irish folklore and finish off with a treat in the onsite café and giftshop.

COUNTY SLIGO

YEATS COUNTRY

FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ONE OF IRELAND’S LITERARY LEGENDS W.B YEATS AND EXPLORE HIS HOME COUNTY, A WILD, UNSPOILT, ROMANTIC LANDSCAPE BURSTING WITH LAKES, RIVERS AND MAJESTIC MOUNTAINS AND ITS DRAMATIC COASTLINE SHAPED BY GORGEOUS , SANDY BEACHES. WITH VIBRANT, CULTURAL TOWNS AND COUNTLESS HISTORICAL SITES, SLIGO IS A NATURAL WONDERLAND OF EPIC PROPORTIONS.

TREAD SOFTLY IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF WB YEATS

William Butler Yeats was one of Ireland’s most famous and significant poets. As a poet and a playwright, his works were hugely influenced by Ireland’s heritage and political history. Although born in Sandymount in Dublin, it is Sligo that is known as Yeats country, and Yeats came to regard Sligo as his spiritual home, having spent long periods of time in his earlier years in Sligo.

He was born into an extraordinarily talented family. His father was the renowned portraitist John Butler Yeats, his sisters Susan (Lily) and Elizabeth (Lolly) were innovative craftworkers and printers and his brother Jack became Ireland’s most celebrated painter. His mother was a member of the business family, the Pollexfens, of Sligo and it was because of this connection that he came to know and love Sligo.

Yeats absorbed the folklore of the area through conversations with the locals and he immortalised much of the Sligo landscape in many of his poems. One of his best known poems is ‘The Lake Isle

of Innisfree’. It includes Yeats’ own personal questions on spirituality and Irish identity. He longed for a simple life in the peace of the Sligo countryside, but the pull of city life was always there.

“I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfree,

And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles made;

Nine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the honey-bee, And live alone in the bee-loud glade. And I shall have some peace there, for peace comes dropping slow, Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket sings; There midnight’s all a glimmer, and noon a purple glow, And evening full of linnet’s wings. I will arise and go now, for always night and day, I hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements grey, I hear it in the deep heart’s core”.

He called Sligo “The Land of Heart’s Desire”.

His love for the mighty Benbulben along its coast led him to write the poem “Under Ben Bulben”.

His relationship with the mountain continues to this day as he requested to be buried in the mountains shadow in Drumcliffe cemetery, with a simple headstone which reads “Cast a cold Eye, on Life, on Death, Horseman pass by”.

The WB Yeats statue in Sligo town was created in 1989 by sculptor Ronan Gillespie to mark the 50th anniversary of Yeats’ death. The statue was unveiled by his son and is a contemporary, bronze statue around 2m in height.

It is engraved with the words of some of his best known poems. It is located on Stephen Street overlooking the Garavogue river and is one of Sligo town’s most photographed attractions.

PLACES TO SEE

DOOLOUGH VALLEY

FAMINE MEMORIAL

A trip to Doolough Valley is a special experience. Nestled between the Mweelrea mountains and the Sheefry hills are two lakes that the Wild Atlantic Way winds along.

At the northern end of the valley is a cross built in memory of the victims of the “Doolough Tragedy”.

During the Great Famine in 1849, many desperate inhabitants from Louisburgh set off on foot in search of food from the authorities at Delphi Lodge. However, their pleas were rejected and they were turned away.

On their return journey across the valley, many poor souls perished from hunger and exposure to frost.

A yearly walk is held along the route in memory of those that died and the cross serves as a stark reminder of one of the most tragic periods in Irish history.

CÉIDE FIELDS

Indulge yourself in a vast prehistoric landscape, a natural, wild ecology of blanket bog, dramatic cliffs and coastline along with the award winning Céide Fields Interpretive Centre.

Beneath these wild boglands in North Mayo lie a system of fields, dwelling areas and megalithic tombs which together make up the most extensive Stone Age monument in the world! The discovery of the fields began in the 1930’s when a schoolteacher noticed piles of rocks which were uncovered as he cut away peat for fuel. The ensuing excavation of dwellings and tombs revealed the way of life of people living 200 generations earlier, a community of farmers who cleared large areas of forest for use as farmland.

The Céide fields are the oldest known field system in the world, at over 5 and a half millenia old!

LOOP HEAD

LIGHTHOUSE

Did you know the Loop Head Peninsula was recently voted as the best place to holiday in Ireland?

It is the true essence of the Wild Atlantic Way with its panoramic cliff views and countless activities to choose from, whether you want to stay dry on land or feel like braving the wild water of the Atlantic ocean. With charming seaside villages full of cosy pubs and restaurants serving delicious fresh local seafood and plenty of quiet, unspoilt beauty spots, a visit to Loop Head is sure to provide you with an unforgettable experience of the real Ireland.

The area also attracts the attention of geologists from all over the world , eager to explore its natural archaeological wonders including dramatic cliff-scapes, sea stacks, stony coves, sand beaches and estuarine mudflats.

It is also one of three places in Ireland that broadcasts a DGPS signal, which improves the accuracy of GPS navigation systems used by mariners. The most iconic feature though is perched proudly at the very tip of the Loop Head Peninsula, surrounded by cliffs sculpted by Atlantic storms.

Loop Head Lighthouse is a major landmark on the northern shore of the river Shannon, perched 90 metres above the wild Atlantic seas. There has been a light here at Loop Head since 1670!

It was originally a coal brazier on a platform on the roof of the cottage lighthouse where the lightkeeper lived. The first ‘tower’ lighthouse was built in 1802 which was replaced with a new tower in 1854.

The lighthouse made the switch to electric operation in 1971 and was eventually automated in 1991.

The lighthouse has breathtaking views of the Wild Atlantic Way and all the charm and romance of an old school lighthouse.

A visit to the lighthouse allows you to uncover its fascinating history through interactive exhibits in the lighthouse keepers cottage or you can take a guided tour up the lighthouse tower to the balcony, which has jaw-dropping views as far south as the Blasket Islands in Co Kerry, and north to the Twelve Pins in Connemara.

PLACES TO SEE

EXPLORE CLARE

THE BURREN

The word Burren comes from the Irish word “Boireann” , meaning rocky place. The Burren covers an area of approx. 360 sq kilometers, stretching from north County Clare to East Galway.

It is one of the largest areas of limestone in Europe, which is over 780 meters thick in some places! It is home to an eclectic mix of flora and fauna usually found in very different habitats, including wild orchids.

It is also home to a 5,800 year old dolmen, Poulabrone Dolmen, which is one of 80 tombs found in the area.

Before heading into the Burren, be sure to visit to The Burren Centre in the village of Kilfenora. Here you will get a great introduction to the famous UNESCO Geopark and will have you up to date on the history of the area, from its geology to its ancient tombs and also the various farming practises that have been used in this unique and wild landscape.

AILLWEE CAVES

Located in the heart of the Burren, this 1km long cave system is thought to be 1 million years old!

It was discovered in 1940 by a farmer who followed his dog inside, yet he told absolutely no one about what he found for 30 years! Only then did it begin its transformation into a tourist hotspot.

Guided tours of the cave system last approx. 30 minutes and you can see and learn about stalactites, stalagmites an underground waterfall and even the bones of the long extinct Irish brown bear!!

There is also a dairy which sells delicious cheeses and fudge, and a birds of prey centre with flying displays featuring eagles, falcons, hawks and owls.

DOOLIN CAVES

Ok ok , another cave .. but this often overlooked, limestone wonderland is just as worthy of a visit as the Aillwee Caves.

Its main feature is the “Great Stalactite”, the longest stalactite in Europe at 23ft in length that took over 70,000 years to form!

Its important to note though that there are 125 steps into and out of the cave although every 10 steps there is a landing and handrail.

Other features include a 1km eco trail around the outside of the cave, a café serving tasty salads, sandwiches and baked goods, and Doolin Cave Pottery, which sells local arts, crafts and keepsakes.

THE CLIFFS OF MOHER

These iconic cliffs are the most visited attraction in Ireland with around 1 million visitors each year.

Stretching 8km and reaching 702ft at their highest point, on a clear day you can see the Aran Islands, Galway Bay, Maum Turk mountains and even as far as the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry.

The panoramic views are truly breathtaking so after taking the obligatory selfie, put the phones away and take it all in.

The cliffs are a breeding site for over 20 species and 30,000 pairs of seabirds and in the Spring, Atlantic Puffins arrive in their thousands for nesting season, making March through May the perfect time for bird watchers to visit.

Take a walk along the cliff top and maybe wander into the award winning visitor centre and enjoy the pictures and exhibits on show.

KING JOHN’S CASTLE

LIMERICK

Located in the heart of Limerick’s medieval quarter and standing along the banks of the River Shannon, this site dates back to 922AD to the time of the Vikings and is Limerick’s most iconic landmark. The castle itself was built around 1200 on the orders of King John during the first Norman conquest of Ireland. Its not hard to see why it is regarded as one of the most impressive medieval castles in Ireland.

The castle dominated the area for centuries and saw Limerick thrive as both a port and a trading centre during the Middle Ages.

A visit to this iconic Limerick landmark allows you to experience 800 years of history with the help of 21st century touch screen technology, 3D models and discovery drawers.

Numerous exhibitions document the history of the castle, the history of

Limerick and the life of King John himself.

In the courtyard you can find a medieval campaign tent, a blacksmiths forge and scenes from a 17th century siege all combining to help recreate the atmosphere of this fascinating era. Visitors can also try their hand at some Medieval games in the outdoor courtyard including archery, horseshoe throwing and tug of war, and then take a break in the on site Siege café.

There is also an archaeological site to explore with excavated findings from 1900/1901 showing how the site on which the castle stands was once a Viking village.

You can also climb the tower and enjoy stunning views over Limerick city and the River Shannon.

The area around the castle is known as King’s Island and is the oldest part of Limerick city. The narrow winding streets and alleyways are a classic feature of medieval town planning.

Now for something really unique, why not abseil from the amazing viewpoint of the castles gatehouse turret! King John’s Castle together with Nevsail Watersports and Adventures offer this unforgettable experience where you can take in the incredible views of Limerick’s rooftop while descending the historic walls.

Running on selected dates throughout July and August and available to book through the website.

KERRY’S BREATHTAKING BEAUTY ENSURES IT IS ONE OF IRELAND’S MOST POPULAR HOLIDAY HOTSPOTS.

SKELLIG MICHAEL

STAR WAR FANS UNITE

This UNESCO world heritage site dates back to the 6th century. The 217m high jagged rock was home to the Skellig Monks. Here they lived an isolated life, in stone beehive-shaped huts. These huts were expertly built in such a way that not a single drop of rain water penetrated their walls.

The monks spent their days tending to their gardens and praying in the church. They lived on a diet of fish and bird eggs.

The nearby smaller island known as “Little Skellig” is also home to many species of sea birds, and is now home to the worlds second largest gannet colony.

The monks were subjected to numerous attacks from Vikings before eventually abandoning the island and relocating to the mainland at Ballinskelligs Abbey in the 13th century. The island was further used as a place

of pilgrimage for centuries to follow. In more recent years, Skellig Michael has shot to the top of many peoples bucket lists due to the fact it features in one of the most famous and iconic film franchises ever made .. Star Wars!

Scenes for Star Wars Episodes 7 and 8 were filmed here with Skellig Michael becoming “Ahch-To” , legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker’s remote sanctuary. The natural features of Skellig Michael fit perfectly into director JJ Abrams vision for the Jedi Temple.

If you don’t fancy making the trip to the islands you can visit the Skellig Experience Centre on Valentia Island located just over the bridge from Portmagee.

Here you can get a brilliant introduction to the two islands through graphics, film presentations, models and exhibits. More information can be found on their website www.skelligexperience.com.

Various local licenced boat operators run trips to Skellig Michael during the tourist season from numerous locations along the Skellig Coast such as Portmagee, Derrynane and Ballinskelligs .

The season for trips to Skellig Michael runs from mid May to the end of September and all trips are, of course, weather permitting.

Non landing trips allow you to see both the original and more modern lighthouses on Skellig Michael.

Some operators run eco tours with the chance to get up close to the seabirds, seals and, if you’re lucky, dolphins too.

SPIKE ISLAND

THE ISLAND FORTRESS

“The island fortress built to defend an empire that became the largest prison in the world.”

Located in Cork Harbour and just a 15 minute ferry ride from Cobh harbour, this former monastery, fortress, prison and home is steeped in more than 1300 years of history. The story of Spike Island is the story of Ireland.

According to the earliest known recorded history of the island, a monastery was founded here in the 7th century. Monks would walk the island for some 300 years until Vikings arrived in Cork Harbour.

It then became a smugglers and pirate hotspot!

Work on a fortress began in 1779, and the iconic 24 acre, star-shaped Fort Mitchel was built which was able to house 3000 men.

By the 1850’s it was the largest prison in the world and housed up to 2300 inmates, crammed into the cells, as the famine raged through Ireland, forcing many starving people to resort to stealing food. Thousands of prisoners were also transported from Spike Island to Australia and the Americas.

Conditions inside the prison were so awful it earned the name “Ireland’s Alcatraz”. The prison eventually closed in 1883 and the fort was then used by the British and later, by the Irish military. It became a prison once again in 1985 and lasted until 2004.

Whilst there, visitors can take an optional guided tour or wander the cells and hear stories of the islands dark but fascinating past. Pay a visit to one of several museums and exhibitions showcasing the islands history or take the 5km ‘Ring of Spike’ walking trail and walk and enjoy the incredible views,

and finish your visit to the island with a relaxing tea or coffee in the café and a visit to the giftshop before returning to the mainland.

Other activities available include a children’s fairy house hunt, an archaeology dig, a cinema club , after dark tours and even paranormal investigations!

A trip to Spike Island is a truly fascinating and memorable experience. Spike Island is reached by ferry only from Kennedy Pier, Cobh and advanced online booking is strongly recommended.

THE GREENWAY

Opened in 2017, the Waterford Greenway is one of the most scenic cycling routes in Ireland.

Also known as the Déise Greenway, this 46 kilometre stretch of glorious pathway runs from the historic Waterford city to the picturesque seaside town of Dungarvan.

Set amongst the backdrop of the Comeragh Mountains, the trail travels through time and nature, following the historic railway line that operated from 1878 until the 1970’s, and takes you across 11 bridges, 3 viaducts and through a 400 metre long tunnel , passing through some of the South East’s most fascinating historical places such as Viking sites, medieval ruins, Norman castles, old railway stations and a Famine workhouse.

It runs along the banks of the River Suir to the stunning beaches of Waterford’s Copper Coast. The greenway also forms part of the Atlantic Coast Route, a European long distance cycling route which passes through Norway, France, Spain, Portugal, Ireland and the UK.

The trail can be broken into 6 stages. Cycling the length of the greenway should take between 3 and a half and 4 hours , depending on whether you stop at the halfway point for lunch.

Coach House Coffee, located in the grounds of an old Famine Workhouse is the perfect spot to stop for a much needed energy boost with a delicious coffee and cake! When you reach the finish line, enjoy a dip on Clonlea Strand to cool down in the summer months or spend some time exploring the rocks along the strand.

You can walk part of the way, cycle in both directions or cycle one way and get the bus back to Waterford city. If you would like to cycle the greenway but don’t have a bike of your own don’t worry, there are plenty of greenway bike hire spots along the route.

Waterford Greenway Bike Hire operate from Waterford City, Kilmacthomas and Dungarvan and carry a wide range of bikes for men, women and children.

GET A FACELIFT WITHOUT GOING

UNDER THE KNIFE

Filo Aesthetics in Cork is a nurse-led leading aesthetics clinic for all your skin care needs.

Owners and registered nurses, Ryan and Christina are passionate about providing their clients with medically guided skincare treatments. Ryan believes that there is an over-reliance on artificial substances via injectables.

Ryan is a big advocate of aiding the body in producing what it naturally requires for healthier and younger looking body, hair, and skin by solely supporting its raw materials instead of adding external elements.

He urges his clients to do more research for alternatives to such treatments and consider a more natural route. FILO’s newest state of the art technology called Sofwave™ is a great solution.

Sofwave™ is the latest technology to revitalize the skin through innovative stimulation of the production of new collagen. Sofwave™Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology is FDA cleared for lifting the eyebrow, submental, and neck and reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

The impressive treatment is done in clinic with zero needles. It is safe, effective and only gets better over time. When clients walk into FILO desperately looking for skin tightening and a facelift, Ryan quickly suggests Sofwave™ along with an entire skincare plan that they can easily follow at home.

The best part about Sofwave™ is that it is only done once a year. Loss of collagen and elastin is the reason for fine lines and wrinkles. Sofwave™ provides a constant boost of new

collagen that will continue to keep the skin plump and firm for an entire year. The heat from the machine causes a targeted injury that triggers a very powerful boost of collagen production which tightens and lifts the skin.

As opposed to a real facelift, this treatment is clean, and it is fast. The entire process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on which part of the face is treated.

FILO’s message is to take good care of your skin even at a younger age to avoid serious damage in later years. However, and unlike other facelifts out there, Sofwave™ is actually ideal at any age as it is only using raw materials of your body but we urge anyone who start to show signs of ageing to speak to Ryan about their options.
