MEDIA INFORMATION

Media wanting to interview Austin Peay State University student-athletes, coaches or staff must contact the sports information office, which will arrange the interview. The best time to conduct interviews with student-athletes is after practice sessions, which vary by team, as do rules for interviewing at each team’s practice – please check with the sports information office for more information about a specific sport. Media that attend a practice session are asked to keep their distance from the action and not to talk to student-athletes or coaches while practice is occurring. A media relations representative will assist you in interviews after the practice’s completion. Team meetings before, during or after practice are private and not accessible to the media. Interviews that can not be conducted at that time will be arranged around the student-athlete or coach’s schedule. Phone numbers of student-athletes will NOT be released to the media and media should NEVER attempt to call student-athletes at home. It is requested that media give the sports information office enough advanced warning when they want to (a) arrange an interview or (b) attend a practice. Last minute interview requests cannot be guaranteed to be honored. The Athletic Department will do everything to respect the requests of the media and it is expected that the media respect the policies set forth by the sports information office.

THIS IS AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY

ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, stateassisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 9,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

For a decade now, Austin Peay men and women’s golf teams have held their home golf tournaments in the Fall. From 1999-2003 the tournament was named the Precept Intercollegiate, but a new partnership was formed. As of the 2004 season, it has been deemed the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. The women tournament is a two day, two-round event played at the 5,960-yard Clarksville Country Club. The men’s tournament is a two day, three-round event played at The Links at Novadell, a par-72, 6,841-yard course in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Austin Peay has had much success on both sides at the event. Staci Lynch (2006) was the last Lady Govs golfer to win the women’s tournament. The Lady Govs have won the team title twice, in 2000 and 2002 The Govs have won their event six times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008), while having the individual medalist six times as well. Grant Leaver (2005,2006) is the only two-time champion. In 2008, Erik Barnes shot the program’s first-ever sub-200 round at the tournament with a 66-66-67 for a 199.

GOVS HEAD COACH KIRK KAYDEN Kirk Kayden was named Austin Peay men’s golf coach in July of 2004 and he has not only sustained the Govs 60-year golf tradition, but he has pushed it to a higher level as evidenced by APSU capturing the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The Fremont, Ohio, native took over the Govs program after Austin Peay had won three consecutive OVC Championships from 2001-03 and has since led the team to 51 program records in five seasons. In the 2007-08 season, the Govs set the 18-hole team score record after setting the 36- and 54-hole records in the previous season. Under Kayden’s guidance, the Govs have set 23 team records in all. Individually, the Govs have set the top three 18-hole scores, nine of the top-10 36-hole scores and nine of the top-10 54-hole scores. During that span, eight Govs golfers earned All-OVC recognition, including two Freshmen of the Year (Grant Leaver, 2005; Erik Barnes, 2007) as well as the 2009 OVC Player of the Year (Barnes) and five OVC All-Tournament selections. After a rocky start in his initial APSU season (2004-05), the Govs closed out with four top-five finishes – including a second-place finish at the OVC Championship, which saw Justin Metzger and Yoshio Yamamoto finish in the top-10. The strong finish in Kayden’s initial season would be a sign of things to come for the Govs. The Govs set a 54-hole team record, three tournaments into the 2005-06 season, at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, firing an 11-under par 829, but finished second. Kayden used that finish, the following week, to motivate the Govs to their first tournament win of his tenure at the Xavier Invitational, where the Govs shot a three-round 843. In the 2006-07 season, the Govs blew up the record books with a win at the Belmont Intercollegiate. A 28-under par, 824, bettered the previous 54-hole mark set at the 2005 Earl Yestingsmeier, by five strokes. Along with the 54-hole mark, Yamamoto fired a school-record 64 – a record that later be match by Barnes at the same course in 2008. The Govs went on to earn seven top-five tournament finishes that season.

In the 2007-08 season, Kayden coached the Govs to five top-five tournament finishes—the Troy University Invitational, the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate, the Aldila/Middle Tennesse Intercollegiate, the Arkansas State Indian Classic and the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The season also marked the first full year with all Kayden-recruited golfers. The Govs had nine top-five finishes, won three tournaments as a team and Barnes won two tournaments (F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate and the UK Bluegrass Invitational) as an individual. Kayden was an outstanding prep golfer at Fremont St. Joseph’s. In 1991, he won the Division III Ohio High School Golf Championship and was voted the Ohio High School Golfer of the Year for his outstanding play and overall sportsmanship. Kayden then signed to play his college golf at Toledo, one of the Mideast’s top Division I golf programs, where he was coached by John Jasinski, now Notre Dame’s head coach. He was a three-year letterman for the Rockets, including winning the Ohio Collegiate Classic as a junior. After graduating in 1997 with a bachelor’s in sports management, Kayden worked as an assistant golf professional and substitute teacher. During this time, Kayden was asked to run the high school golf program at Central Columbia High School, where he became interested in coaching. After one year at Central Columbia, Kayden was selected to start the golf program at Terra Community College, also in Fremont. In the first year of the Terra program, the team advanced to the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Regional Tournament and finished the season ranked fifth nationally in Division III. During Kayden’s three years at Terra, he coached three all-conference academic players and four all-conference players, including the 1999 Ohio Community College Athletic Conference’s Player of the Year, Dave Omlor. In 2001, Kayden was hired by Greg Nye to become Penn State’s assistant. Nye, the former head coach at Bowling Green, had recruited Kayden out of high school. He went on to play an integral part in Penn State’s appearance in three straight NCAA Regionals, including a 15th-place finish at the NCAA championships in 2004. He helped coach Penn State’s Athlete of the Year (Andy Latowski in 2001-02), the Big Ten Sportsman of the Year, (Jonas Hyden in 2002-03) and an honorable mention All-American (Mark Leon in 2003-04). The Nittany Lions also had six All-NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region selections during his tenure. Penn State had the program’s lowest (2002-03) and second-lowest (2001-02) scoring averages with Kayden’s assistance. He is married to the former Melissa Hermes, and they have one daughter, Madeline Amelia, born May 8, 2008.

LADY GOVS HEAD COACH SARA ROBSON During Summer 2005 Austin Peay chose to divide its golf programs and promoted thenassistant Sara Robson to the head coach of the women’s team. That decision has proven to be the right one, as Robson has led the Lady Govs to much success over the past five years. Robson is her sixth season as the Lady Govs head coach after serving two seasons as the combined programs assistant. Throughout the past five seasons, Robson has guided the Lady Govs to seven 18-hole team records, six 36-hole team records and nine 54-hole team records. Individually, Robson’s golfers have set five 18-hole marks, eight 36-hole records as well as five 54-hole records. In all, Robson’s teams account for more than 40 team or individual records. Her first two seasons as the Lady Govs head coach each showed a steady improvement for a program that would quickly become established in the league. Robson led Austin Peay to an improved stroke average in each of those seasons, working to develop a foundation on which to build for the future. She brought in local standout Staci Lynch for the 2006-07 season and was not disappointed. As a freshman, Lynch was the Lady Govs top scorer in 11 of 12 tournaments, finishing with eight top-10 finishes. She won two tournaments – the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate, where she set the program’s 36-hole record at 140, and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. Lynch finished with a 76.3 stroke

average, which remains the best of any Robson-coached golfer, and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. During that season, the Lady Govs had three top-five and seven top-10 finishes: the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, the Troy Women’s Intercollegiate, the Ann Rhoads/BSC Shootout, Belmont Intercollegiate, the Saluki Invitational, the EKU Spring Invitational and the OVC Championship. The Lady Govs had six top-10 and two top-five finishes in 2007-08, led this time by another freshman, Chelsea Harris. The Metropolis, Ill, native posted a 78.96 scoring average and became the second Lady Govs player to earn All-OVC honors in as many years. Harris also was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and finished third at the OVC Championship with a 234. The 2008-09 season was a banner year for the Lady Govs. Harris was named first-team All-OVC while earning OVC All-Tournament honors with a fifth-place finish at the event. The Lady Govs recorded a .321 team stroke average, improving by almost three strokes over the previous season. Robson’s impact on the Lady Govs has seen success not only on the golf course, but also in the classroom. In fact, during the 2008-09 season Lady Govs sophomore Catie Tucker was named to the National Golf Association Division I All-American Scholar team and received the OVC Medal of Honor for highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport. Tucker also was one six APSU golfers named to the OVC Commissioners Honor Roll. These high academic standards have been the norm for Robson’s teams throughout her tenure. In any given semester, the Lady Govs have never had fewer than three golfers earn some kind of academic distinction. Robson came to APSU from Belmont, where she served one season as a student assistant after playing for the program from 1998-2001. Her duties as assistant included keeping team statistics and assisting the head coach in all administrative aspects. In the summers of 2001 and 2002, Robson was assistant academy director for the Indiana Golf Association. There, she was a group mentor and taught designated programs and clinics. Robson is currently certified as a class A status in LPGA Teaching ranks and as a club professional. Previously, she was a junior golf office assistant for the Tennessee Golf Foundation. The Metropolis, Ill., native graduated in May 2002 from Belmont with a degree in religion and elementary education. She is married to Eric Robson.
