Oregon announces relocation to Blaine
The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) announces that its Board of Governors has approved the relocation of the Oregon Tradesmen to Blaine, Minnesota.
Beginning in the 2024-25 season, the Tradesmen will be rebranded as the Minnesota Moose. The Moose will be a part of the NA3HL’s West Division and will play out of Fogerty Arena in Blaine.
“The Tradesmen have had tremendous success on the ice in our four years in Oregon,” President of the Tradesmen Bill McCoshen said. “We want to thank our coaches, staff, players, billets, sponsors, and fans for their support over the years.”
The Moose will be coached by Todd Sanden, who has won four Fraser Cup Championships as Head Coach and General Manager of the North Iowa Bulls. “The Moose will fit perfectly into the
NA3HL footprint and provide another great opportunity for players to gain exposure and advancement opportunities in the state of Minnesota,” NAHL Commissioner and President Mark Frankenfeld said. “Fogerty Arena has been a tremendous partner with the NAHL, and I believe that will continue to be true with the NA3HL and the Moose making Fogerty their new home.”
The NA3HL is the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III Junior league and serves as one of the top training grounds in the country by providing the best coaching, exposure and developmental vehicles available for student-athletes in its classification. The NA3HL will be entering its 15th season of operation during the 2024-25 season. It is the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior hockey league.
Minnesota Wildnerness to join NA3HL
The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) has announced that it has approved the membership of the Minnesota Wilderness.
The board of governors approved Wilderness owner Barry Bohman’s request to purchase the Minnesota Loons of the NA3HL for relocation. The Loons, currently home in Breezy Point, MN, will be moved to Northeast Minnesota and will be rebranded as the Minnesota Wilderness.
“We are excited about the new opportunity for continued exposure of players at the NA3HL level in the state of Minnesota,” NAHL Commissioner Mark Frankenfeld said. “The Wilderness are a great storied franchise in the NAHL, and having an NA3HL team under the same umbrella will provide great advancement opportunities for players.”
The NA3HL Wilderness will bear the same colors, logo and uniforms as the
North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) Minnesota Wilderness squad. The Wilderness will begin playing in the NA3HL’s West Division, which includes four other teams based in the state of Minnesota.
“We are thrilled to bring the NA3HL to Northern Minnesota,” Minnesota Wilderness (NAHL) General Manager Dave Boitz said. “We believe that having another team in the area will just give that many more players a chance to continue to develop their game and prepare for the next level. Many good players in the arena are not quite ready for the NAHL, so this will give those players that extra year or so that they may need to make the jump.”
The NA3HL Wilderness are expected to play out of Eveleth, MN.
The Wilderness will begin building its roster immediately, with the help of the NA3HL Draft scheduled for April 24.
The NA3HL will be entering its 14th sea-
son of operation during the 2024-25 season.
It is the only USA Hockey-sanctioned Tier III junior hockey league. A current Hermantown Hawk will soon be suiting up for the Minnesota Wilderness.
Forward River Freeman signed a tender with the club out of Cloquet.
Just this past season, Freeman had his best year with the Hawks, tallying 22 goals and 27 assists. The year prior, he would have just 13 goals and 14 assists.
Number 23 played a big role in leading Hermantown to the Class A title game, before falling to St. Cloud Cathedral.
Freeman and the Hawks finished with an overall record of 20-9-2.
Duluth East defenseman Christian Houser and Duluth Denfeld forward John Scott both inked tenders with the NA3HL Minnesota Wilderness.
They’re the latest local talents on the team after Minnesota would pick C-E-C
forward Ryan Jones in the NA3HL draft last week.
Just this past year, Houser skated in 26 games for the Greyhounds, totaling two points.
Scott on the other hand, would have 20 goals and 14 assists for the Hunters.
Stepan named new GM
The Minnesota Wilderness’ NA3HL team has their first head coach and GM.
On Tuesday, the club announced that Zach Stepan will lead the team in their first season.
He comes from the Des Moines Buccaneers of the USHL, where he spent the last two seasons.
Prior to that, he’s had stints with NAHL clubs in the Aberdeen Wings and the Chippewa Steel.
Stepan played collegiately at Mankato and was drafted by the Nashville Predators in 2012.
Jr. Blues forward Wright signs NAHL Tender
The St. Louis Jr. Blues of the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) are pleased to announce that forward Mason Wright has signed a NAHL tender agreement with the Shreveport Mudbugs of the NAHL’s South Division. Wright, 17, wrapped up his first season of junior hockey playing for the St. Louis Jr. Blues. Prior to joining the Jr. Blues, the 6’2” forward played three seasons for O’Fallon Township High School, tallying a whopping 107 points in 50 games. During his time in the NA3HL, Wright appeared in 47 games for St.Louis, tallying 42 points (18 goals, 24 assists), in 49 games, the leading scorer for the Jr. Blues. Of his 16 goals, Wright made an impact on special teams, scoring 2 powerplay goals and 5 shorthanded goals. As a result of his success, Wright was se-
Danbury Jr. Hat Tricks
lected to participate in the Top Prospects Tournament where he registered 2 goals and 4 assists in 2 games.
Wright is the 1st player to tender for St. Louis.
A tender is a contract, of sorts, a player signs announcing his intentions to play for that particular NAHL team and that NAHL team only. Once a player signs a tender with an NAHL team, his playing rights belong to that team within the NAHL and he may not be recruited by any other NAHL team. Each team is granted ten (10) tenders, which include two (2) tenders exclusively used on players from the NA3HL - plus or minus any trades - which became active on November 1st. Tendered players are not eligible for the 2024 NAHL Draft.

Kyle McClellan wins 2024 Mike Richter Award
University of Wisconsin senior and former NAHL goaltender, Kyle McClellan, (Austin Bruins 2018-2019) has been named the 2024 recipient of the Mike Richter Award, given annually to the top goalie in Men’s NCAA Division I Ice Hockey.
The Manchester, MO native had a stellar season with the Badgers, posting a 24-12-1 record, maintaining a 1.94 GAA and a yearly save percentage of .931, tied for the best save percentage of any goalie in the NCAA. Of his 24 wins, 7 were shutouts, the most by any goaltender during the 2023-2024 season.
“It’s pretty special, and obviously, it’s a team accomplishment. It shows how far our team has come both on and off the ice,” said McClellan. “It’s an honor to be selected among the other goalies in the NCAA. With Mike Richter going to school at Wisconsin and being named the award, it’s a huge honor. With the journey that I’ve had, I’ve hit almost every level of play. It’s not a rush to get where you are; just keep working for it.”
In addition to earning the Richter Award, McClellan was named the Big Ten Goaltender of the Year, the first Badger to earn this award in Program history. He was also named a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award. McClellan has taken home additional awards as well, including being one of the ACHA All-American Scholars in 2021-2022, was named to the Big Ten First All-Star Team this season, and the NCAA West Second All-American team.
Prior to transferring to Wisconsin his junior year, the 6’1” netminder spent two seasons at Mercyhurst University. Throughout his four years at the NCAA level, McClellan had an overall record of 41-35-3, a 2.35 GAA and a .926 save percentage. As a result of his notable NCAA
career, the Iowa Wild of the AHL have signed McClellan one-year, one-way contract contract for the 2024-2024 season. With the Austin Bruins, McClellan posted a 22-17-4 record, 2.31 GAA and a .926 save percentage, tallying 5 shutouts throughout the year as well. With his
success, he earned a spot on the Omaha Lancers in the USHL the following season.
“The league was smaller when I was playing but with what the NAHL does, players receive every opportunity to be seen by NAHL scouts,” said McClellan.
“We are all so proud of Kyle winning the Richter Award and all of his accomplishments since his time in Austin,” said Steve Howard, head coach of the Austin Bruins. “We knew we had a special goalie by the way he carried himself on and off the ice. I have personally enjoyed following his career and watching his development over the last five seasons. We all expect to see many more and wish him all the best with the Iowa Wild.”
The Missouri native also spent four seasons developing in the NAPHL with the St. Louis Selects and CarShield AAA at the 16U and 18U levels.
“I always knew Kyle was an elite goaltender from a young age when he was with our 16U team (St. Louis Selects AAA),” Head Coach of CarShield AAA Kyle O’Kane said. “He was always very focused every time he was at the rink. Extremely proud to see his hard work and dedication pay off with winning the Richter.”
He is the third former NAHL goalie to win the award, joining Connor Hellebuyck (Winnipeg Jets - Odessa Jackalopes) and Jack LaFontaine (Kansas City Mavericks - Janesville Jets). Congratulations Kyle!

NORTH AMERICAN PROSPECTS HOCKEY LEAGUE
EXPOSURE REDEFINED
NAHL Prospects Challenge
The North American Hockey League (NAHL) has announced the schedule for the 2024 NAHL Prospects Challenge, which will take place from May 17-19, 2024. The games will be held at Fogerty Arena and the NSC Super Rink, in Blaine, Minn.
The NAHL Prospects Challenge is a valuable addition to the league’s developmental pathway. By incorporating both 18U and 16U teams assembled by NAHL Member teams, it offers a platform for young players to compete at a high level and gain exposure to NAHL coaches and scouts.
The strategic timing of the event alongside the Robertson Cup enhances its significance, as it allows for increased participation from NAHL teams and expands the geographical reach for scouting and recruitment efforts. This alignment
creates a synergy between showcasing top-tier talent at the Robertson Cup and providing a platform for up-and-coming prospects to make their mark.
Moreover, the educational aspect of the Prospects Challenge is noteworthy. It provides an opportunity for players to learn from NAHL coaches and staff, gain insights into the league’s standards and expectations, and understand the pathway to advancement within the NAHL and beyond. Overall, the Prospects Challenge aims at nurturing young talent, strengthening the league’s talent pipeline, and fostering connections between players, and teams.
“You can really see the success of last year’s event in the growth this year,” Director of Player Personnel Dennis Vickers said. “Last year we had 16 (18U) and 14 (16U) NAHL branded organiza-
tions. This year boasts 24 (18U) and 22 (16U) NAHL branded organizations. This provides players an opportunity to prove themselves in front of the NAHL coaches and scouts, and allows the NAHL teams to use a subsidiary tender on players participating in the event. It’s a win-win.”
The event is designed to maximize exposure for the players and bring together teams for like minded and enhanced competition. Each NAHL member club is eligible to enter one 18U team and one 16U team in the event.
“The prospects challenge is a great event for the players to gain experience on the ice and exposure from NAHL teams,” NAHL Commissioner and President Mark Frankenfeld said. “The players should expect to have a great experience and great hockey being played in front of NAHL Scouts. The event provides the
16U Prospects Challenge Schedule
players a chance to be evaluated and perform as they look to earn the opportunity to tryout and hopefully make an NAHL team some day”
Having a three-game round-robin followed by semi-final or consolation, as well as championship matches, it provides a platform for teams to assess talent and for players to showcase their skills. A minimum of four games ensures that each team gets a significant amount of playing time, allowing coaches and scouts to thoroughly evaluate the players’ performances. The three, 17-minute periods offer ample time for players to demonstrate their abilities and for teams to strategize and adapt during gameplay. The Championship Games are scheduled for 3:00 and 3:15 p.m. puck drop on Sunday, May 19.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – The Minnesota Wild, in partnership with Minnesota Hockey, Pure Hockey, the NHL, and the NHLPA announced today that registration for the 2024 Little Wild Learn To Play Program will open at 10 a.m. CT on Monday, May 20 at www.wild.com/ littlewild. The 2024 Little Wild Learn To Play Program will host 22 sessions across the State of Hockey including the third annual all-girls session at TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
The Little Wild Learn To Play Program is for first-time boys and girls hockey players. Eligible participants must be between the ages of 5-8 as of Sept. 1, 2024. The maximum number of participants per location is 65.
The program is intended for children who have not participated in organized youth hockey programs before or are planning to participate for the first time during the 2024-25 season. Children who have previously participated in the Little Wild
Program are not eligible to participate again. Those in violation of this rule will not be able to participate and their registration fees will not be refunded.
For $189, participants will receive four, one-hour on-ice sessions led by the Minnesota Hockey American Development Model team and a full set of hockey equipment. Kids who do not have skating experience are strongly encouraged to take skating lessons prior to their first
Little Wild on-ice session if possible. All equipment fittings for the 2024 Little Wild Program will be held in person at the following Pure Hockey locations: Woodbury (August 2-4) and Burnsville (August 9-11). Registered participants will receive an email with information on equipment fitting dates and times at a Pure Hockey location. For in-metro participants, you can try on your gear instore, take home the jersey and stick, and
the rest will be shipped to you. For out of metro locations, there will be an option to use an online link to order your gear and have it shipped.
All participants will be invited to attend a preseason Minnesota Wild game at Xcel Energy Center during the 2024-25 season. Little Wild participants will each receive a FREE ticket to the game and have the option to purchase additional tickets through a special ticket offer.
Boise To Host 2024-25 Rivalry Series Game
USA-Canada match-up set for Nov. 10 at Idaho Central Arena COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.
– The first location of the 2024-25 Rivalry Series was unveiled today by USA Hockey and the Idaho Steelheads. The U.S. Women’s National Team will face Canada on Sunday, November 10, at the Idaho Central
Arena in Boise, Idaho.
The game will serve as the third game in the 2024-25 Rivalry Series, with two additional November games in the United States to be announced in the coming weeks.
Tickets for the game on November 10 are anticipated to go on sale in June.
The 2024-25 Rivalry Series will consist of five games, with three games taking place in the U.S. in November and two games in Canada in February.
Now in its fifth season, the Rivalry Series was introduced by USA Hockey and Hockey Canada in 2018-19 to provide additional visibility for women’s hockey and showcase the best players in the world.
Minnesota leads the nation in PWHL players
by STEVE MANN MINNESOTA HOCKEYMinnesota’s already strong reputation for producing great girls’ and women’s hockey talent has grown by leaps and bounds during the inaugural season for the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL).
While home to one of the PWHL’s six teams, the State of Hockey is also considered home for 20 of the league’s players (12% of all players), with skaters from Minnesota represented on five of the six PWHL rosters.
For players such as Minnesota forward Claire Butorac, being a part of this first season and playing in front of family and friends has been monumental.
“It took a while to really sink in,” said Butorac, a product of Andover hockey and a Minnesota State alumnus. “Having a PWHL team in Minnesota is instrumental to the growth of the women’s game, as having the highest level of hockey available for young girls to see in person or on TV gives these girls role models they can look up to and also interact with. Getting to have a role in this is something I’ll carry with me the rest of my career.”
Minnesotans Making Their Mark
The heavy Minnesota influence was evident from the very first pick of the PWHL Draft, held on Sept. 18, 2023, in Toronto. Lake City’s Taylor Heise, who played six seasons of varsity girls’ hockey for Red Wing before embarking on an award-winning career at the University of Minnesota, was the No.
1 overall selection by Minnesota (one of seven Minnesotans taken by the PWHL Minnesota club).
Heise, the 2022 Patty Kazmaier Award recipient, was one of 12 total Minnesotans drafted. Those dozen State of Hockey stars made up 13% of all players drafted and 41% of all Americans drafted.
Draft day proved to be just the beginning of the large Minnesota presence on 2024 PWHL rosters. As of April 22, 2024, there were 20 Minnesota natives in the league, including 12 on Minnesota’s roster, 4 with Boston, 2 with Ottawa, and one each with Montreal and New York. Minnesotans make up nearly 40% of all American players in the league (20 out of 54). Massachusetts, Michigan and New York ranked next with 11% each.
“I think it’s awesome to see so many different Minnesota communities represented,” said Butorac. “For
2022 CARROLL GOALIE SCHOOL
the Minnesota-born players on our team, it’s extra special to get to experience this inaugural season in our home state and showcase how special the State of Hockey is. Even beyond our team, there are many Minnesota-born players across the league, which is a true testament to the amount of talent in Minnesota as a whole.”
Community-Based Model Produces Talent
The successful community-based development model emphasized in Minnesota has been on full display for PWHL fans since the new season kicked off on January 1, 2024. This “Minnesota Model” has proven to be key to player development and future success.
According to Butorac, experiencing this approach to development at a young age helped prepare her for her long-term hockey journey.
“I was lucky to have coaches in
Andover that cared about my development and went above and beyond to make sure I was given the resources I needed to reach the next level,” she said. “I believe Minnesota players are so sought-after due to the level of play and skill the players are exposed to early on in their playing careers.”
If this inaugural PWHL season has proven anything, it’s that the influence Minnesota has on the women’s and girls’ hockey universe remains strong and will continue to grow. Case in point: in 2023-24, Minnesota led the U.S. with 13,452 registered girls’ hockey players from 19U and under, including 5,244 8U skaters (22% of all 8U skaters). The PWHL currently has players hailing from Andover (2), Blaine, Bloomington, Eagan (2), Elk River, Excelsior, Lake City, Lakeville, Lino Lakes, Minnetonka, Mound, North Oaks, Plymouth, Rogers, Roseville, Vadnais Heights, Warroad and Wayzata.
“Many of our Minnesota players are involved in their hometown organizations, which creates a sense of community reaching from the youth all the way to the pros. This builds a strong foundation,” Butorac said. “I have had the opportunity to coach youth hockey, and I have seen the increase of young girls picking up the game. The impact for me hits home the most when I am back to coach in Andover. Hearing and seeing the impact this league has had just in my community alone is special, and I can only imagine the reaction is the same around the state as well.”

Tournament entrants from outside Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota: Be informed that Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota Squirt, PeeWee and Bantam teams will likely have some players up to six months older than the USA Hockey age guidelines for those classifications. Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota are using a July 1 age cut-off date while USA Hockey is using a January 1 age cut-off date. If you are concerned about this issue, you should contact the tournament director immediately to determine whether or not you should register for the tournament.
