Tech Hub Talks Business Edge Hill University has unveiled its new £13m Tech Hub, which is open to businesses across Lancashire helping to strengthen relationships and encourage economic growth across the region. The Tech Hub houses the UK’s first 4k resolution virtual simulation CAVE (cave automatic virtual environment) giving student’s and businesses access to cutting-edge 3D technology, with the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in a virtual room and experience real life scenarios in 4k resolution – anything from emergency situations to complex surgery and lab reactions, other facilities at the Tech Hub include: • A Harvard-style lecture theatre • The Tech Sandpit: bringing together students and businesses to discuss and share ideas. • A Hatchery: workspace for entrepreneurs to tap into skills and knowledge of the University and local industry to work on new business ideas. • Interact with the Tech Hub's child-sized robot.

The building has been developed with the aim of opening up facilities to local businesses and creating an environment for collaborative partnerships, with an invitation to approach the University with project proposals. The Tech Sandpit will allow technology businesses to carry out research, utilising the skills and knowledge of academics and students. The Hatchery will help support graduate technology companies as well as creating space for budding entrepreneurs and new business ideas. The Tech Hub aims to be a key resource for employers across Lancashire and beyond, including those in the food manufacturing and digital creative industries, allowing the University to support advanced industry in the region. UKI Express Transport expands within Skelmersdale Freight forwarding and warehousing specialists UKI Express Transport has relocated within Skelmersdale to a sizeable 100,400 sq ft of warehouse space, situated on the thriving Gillibrands commercial area. Peter Gummerson, Managing Director of UKI, said: “This move was imperative for our continued growth and in order to support our large portfolio of clients who currently ship in excess of 190,000 tonnes per year into and around the United Kingdom”. UKI carry over 1500 separate consignments per day throughout the United Kingdom, via road, air and sea, so location was a key factor

when searching for a new distribution centre. Dennis Dwyer, Orbit Development’s Divisional Director, said: “This is a significant letting for the site and demonstrates that the commercial market for units of this size is alive and kicking. Skelmersdale has an enviable location for logistics operators with its location being so close to the M6 and the motorway network. We are continuing to market the site with a further 374,400 sq ft of refurbished distribution warehouse accommodation, with the first phase of 186,560 sq ft ready for Jan 17 and second phase of 176,600 sq ft ready for users in Feb 17”.

Spotlight on the Place Board The Skelmersdale Place Board is a collaboration of private and public sector leaders brought together to successfully deliver an exciting and important strategy for the town. Their vision is to drive forward their plans and encourage individuals, businesses and organisations to become Ambassadors and champion Skelmersdale as a great place to do business. Boost Business Lancashire are offering Lancashire businesses a bespoke Sales and Marketing programme ‘Selling Made Easier’ specifically aimed at MD’s who sell or have teams that sell. Join Ormskirk’s new Business Forum Dave Coyle owner of The Cricketers, Ormskirk is keen to establish a new business forum specifically aimed at town centre businesses. The new forum will allow businesses the opportunity to hear first-hand about town centre initiatives and be involved in future events. As set out in the Ormskirk Town Centre Strategy the Council has forged new partnerships with community organisations, businesses and Edge Hill University who work together to use innovative ways to enhance and promote the town and encourage a strong sense of pride through community engagement. The new business forum will have a place on the Ormskirk Town Centre Management group and contribute to improve Ormskirk’s offer as a great shopping and visitor destination. Dave is actively engaging with businesses and has already attracted a number of retailers keen to be involved. New visual brand for Ormskirk Does your business or organisation have a connection with Ormskirk?
