21 year old Male “The four years I’ve been going to Breakout have guided me from a naive and newly out 17 year old to the 21-year-old man I am today. Breakout has achieved more in its short life than many other groups could ever hope to achieve. It has been a catalyst for change in Donegal and has protected, cared for and cherished the young people that have used it.“

Matthew (Donegal IYMAS Team 2016) “For me the IYMAs are a great opportunity, I learned a lot about the music industry from actually playing, to important aspects such as PR and fundraising. I feel the IYMAs are a great to help artists get on their feet, regardless of winning or not. Overall I gained a valuable skill-set that will definitely by useful in my future in music.”

2016 DYS Board of Directors

I am delighted to have served another year as Chairperson of Donegal Youth Service. It is a role I am very passionate about and I am proud to say that all the directors I serve with on the board of DYS are all highly committed to ensuring DYS remains a high quality youth service. Donegal Youth Service is a vibrant and dynamic organisation, always going the extra mile to provide the best possible service to meet the needs of young people and 2016 was no exception. 2016 is the first year of the current three year Strategic Plan which sets out the work of the organisation and I am delighted to report that all targets were met and many surpassed. You will find illustrated in this report, the wide variety of activities, services and supports in place and the numbers of young people engaged with a progresive, relevant and needs led approach. Everyone in Donegal Youth Service plays a vital role in supporting young people to be happy, safe, connected, healthier and achieving their full potential. Young people are central to the work of the organisation and this ethos is reflected in the services that are so well received by the young people who are part of them. It is incumbent on me to pay tribute to the hard work and dedication of our volunteers who work tirelessly in all parts of our county. They are the cornerstone of DYS and give of their time so generously to our young people, I believe, that as positive role models; the greatest gift we can give young people is our time and attention. I am always so impressed when I meet our volunteers and young people and hear about the great work they are doing in their communities. Once again I would like to pay tribute to our Regional Director Lorraine, who with her encouraging leadership always goes above and beyond to support and promote the needs of the staff, volunteers and young people. As Chairperson, on behalf of the Board I would like to thank all the staff, volunteers and amazing young people for their commitment, energy, enthusiasm, passion and drive over the past 12 months.

“I have had an amazing time for the last three years on the DYS CE Project and I have done a lot of training including First Aid, H&S, Child Protection, Hear4you (listening ear), Youth Work Course (Fetac Level 5 Major Award), Train the Trainer and Restorative Practice. The training I have gained will help me find future employment. I will always be thankful for the DYS CE experience I had especially the many staff and young people I have worked with. I would encourage people to take up the CE scheme as it’s a positive experience - one they will never forget and be valuable to their lives.“
