Core & Shell + Tenant Improvement (FF&E)
Contributions Exterior Facade Detailed and coordinated, with the glass consultant, the innovative slump and etched glass curtain wall. Vertical Transportation Designed, detailed, and coordinated all cantilevered feature stairs from cellar floor through the 5th floor, the convenience stairs on all BOH spaces, and the details for passenger and service elevators.
Interior Tenant Improvement Documented and executed drawings from the demolition phase through construction administration for vestibule detailing, glass guardrail details, floor finish and transition details, ceiling transition and partition details, and door and hardware details plus schedules. Weekly Coordination Led weekly design coordination calls with client, consultants, and team.

Building Code, Fire Protection, and Life Safety Researched, documented, and executed the design for fire shutters required in atrium conditions, the slab edge conditions requiring smoke baffles with respect to the approved CCD1, the code required fireproofing of existing and new structural members, and coordinated the sprinkler layouts for atrium and stairs.

Nike House of Innovation 000 My journey with Nike began with the CD documentation for the Core & Shell of the 650 5th Avenue, New York Flagship Store. The late nights of iterative detailing, weekly deadlines, and coordination between various consultants and Nike Design blurred together, but these were all crucial steps that led to one of the projects I am most proud to have been involved with. I use to think modeling, rendering, and the documentation of a project was the most thrilling part of architecture. Putting ideas onto paper was a step towards making a project real. Little did I know the excitement was just beginning. This project became more exciting when construction began.

Our first task was the construction of a 6-storey beast of a barricade, constructed along 5th Avenue and 52nd Street. A plywood encased, structurally sound barricade was required of any construction along 5th Avenue. What made this unique was the struggles we had documenting and constructing all of this by mid-November, before the Holiday Embargo which prevented any construction to occur outside of a barricade. This enormous, time sensitive, and costly task foreshadowed the great undertaking ahead to create Nike’s new House of Innovation 000. For the next year and change, Nike produced various innovative designs behind this forest green barricade before it was revealed to the public.

Nike’s innovation can be first experienced by the newly invented slumped and etched glass facade which hung from the 7th floor of an existing building and supported by a solid steel mullion systems. The glass facade was etched and slumped at a 23.50, the angle of the Nike Swoosh. This combination of slumped and etched glass had not been done before, thus it was tricky to meet the tight deadline of realizing this, while performing all the necessary tests to guarantee the performance and stability of this facade. But with just one panel produced, all tests were conducted and it performed better than we all could have imagined. With this, the production of all 71 standard slumped and etch panels and 4 angled panels took shape.

THIRD FLOOR T.O.F.F While theA.F.F. facade was in production, the 17'-2 7/8" B.O. DECK demolition process began. First with the existing 16'-6 3/8" A.F.F. facade, in conjunction with the existing interiors, and7'-0" the partial removal of the existing slabs. GUARDRAIL In the interior, a grand atrium was introduced GL-101 METALproudly PIPE HANDRAIL which showcases 9 and 10 feet wide, MT-102 terrazzo grand staircases. The stairs cantilevered off each floor with only a hanger supporting the entire systems across 5 floors. Glass guardrails flanked one side to allow for a continuous view SECOND FLOOR T.O.F.F in and0'-0" outA.F.F. of the slumped glass facade, which captured the motion of people as they traversed each floor. The blurring of motion reflected
Nike’s saying that, “Everyone is an athlete.” Steel guardrails flanked the other side of the stairs, illustrating the raw and industrial look Nike favored. CL

A fun innovative and sustainable design introduced by Nike was the incorporation of recycled Nike shoe soles, coined “the Nike grind”, into the terrazzo floor tiles throughout the store. Flecks of neon rubber highlight the black, gray, and white terrazzo within the store and long the grand stairs. So how did Nike plan to achieve the new experience of Nike retail? It is all about the unique, customized user experience.

In the front of house spaces, ceiling, floor, and power and data systems were set up so that it allowed for the most flexibility. For instance, a unistrut ceiling grid allowed for Nike to change their store layout easily, furniture and fixtures floated as needed, and the first floor included a raised floor system that allowed for an endless configuration of space with ease. This allows Nike to change the user experience as frequent as they wanted, presenting as many stories as they please, which trust me, Nike does frequently update their spaces-- as frequent as every 2 weeks.

Fitting rooms were designed to provide the customers with ample space and a lighting system that adjusted to various conditions through the touch of a button. For the convenience of customers, the cellar floor featured a new concept for Nike, known as the Speedshop, where customers can quickly browse and purchase the hottest trending items or pick up items purchased online stored in the Nike lockers.

Back of house supporting spaces were just as important, allowing for ample storage of all their products and convenience stairs were designed for the ease of employees accessing each floor. Hidden within one of the floor’s back of house lies the rumor room, a room for VIP guests only that housed the latest and greatest. Through 2 years of hard work designing, detailing, and constructing, through collaboration with a series of trusted consultants and contractors, with a design team that had a passion to experiment with innovative design, this project is one I can proudly present, which opened on November 15th, 2018 -- just in time for the holidays.

Nike 669 N. Michigan Ave
Flagship Renovation
Contributions Coordination, Documentation, Construction Administration Execute all coordination between Nike Design, the G.C., the structural engineer, and the MEPF engineers, detailed all documentation sets for both Phase 1 and Phase 2, reviewed all shop submittals and RFI, filled and obtained building permits for both phases, and completed construction administration for phase 1. Vertical Transportation Designed, detailed, and coordinated all cantilevered feature stairs on 1st to 2nd floor and 3rd to 4th floor.
Nike Chicago Flagship Store Among the crazy deadlines of Nike 650, I solely worked on the documentation, coordination, and construction administration of the Nike Chicago Flagship Store renovation. Phase 1, completed on December 12, 2018 included the introduction of 2 new feature stairs made of steel and wood. This aided customers through the store, since the original layout had hidden escalators located differently on each floor. Since the competion of the stairs, the usage of the stairs outnumbers that of the escalator and elevator combined.

Phase 2, with construction scheduled to begin mid January of 2019 and completion by March, includes the refinishing of floors, updates to all interior fixtures, introduction of new fitting rooms, and the highly needed expansion of stockrooms. More to come on this phase soon.

Millennium Mills: A site on the docks of East London, has been abandoned and unused for almost 30 years. The site is 30 acres with a large art deco building and a smaller silo. It is situated on the Royal Docks, which is connected to Thames River and is also currently unused. The original purpose of the building was for flour milling, the process of which called for a lot of vertical machinery. The gaping holes in the floor plates are the remnants of this process.
Gasification: A series of vertical processes, fitting the vertical nature of the building. The goal is to produce enough energy on the site to provide for the Docklands Light Railway and revitalize the docks. Municipal Waste: The biomass selected for the gasification process is municipal waste. The challenge is to find the area of London whose waste will size the gasification requirements on the site, and determine how much energy is possible given those limitations. With this proposal, an input and output loop is created: the waste from the city is sent to East London via the river and the docks in order to produce energy to run the passenger train that links East London to the city center.
Proposal: To re-purpose the old flour mill with a gasification process that revitalizes the site which positively affects the neighboring area. It requires access to a constant stream of biomass, which can be brought by ship directly to the site.

What is a neighborhood and how can the architecture affect its spaces?
The Site: A highly congested area of Brooklyn, where a multitude of unpleasant vehicular thruways overlap. The Proposal: 5-600 feet tall, high density, mixed-use towers, will be proposed situate within a park to create a unique neighborhood character within this neighborhood of Brooklyn. This neighborhood will act as an icon in the skyline, will be responsive to the local conditions, and will provide for the neighborhood a much needed urban green space. The Goal: To optimize each of the five towers towards certain conditions that enhances the program within.

Why the towers in the park scheme? The park would divert the high speed traffic under the park, creating a destination above ground that residents of the surrounding neighborhood can enjoy. Cars are hidden from view within this area, and are either parked below the park or driven into the towers where elevators lift them to designated areas for parking within. The towers can provide higher density, mixed-use living for this up and coming area of Brooklyn.
3. Each segment of the towers is then rotated according to the ideal view pending their location within the park and the overall program of the each segment. 4. Programs within each segment are further refined and distributed based on the optimization of the view. Typically people can see best 30 degrees to the left and right, and 15 degrees down, if they are looking straight forward. If the window panels on the structure do not fit within the field of view and if the panels are not at least 30 feet away from the core, the program behind these panels would be allocated to parking, back of house, or other core functions.
Setting the parameters: Each tower is optimized to face all residential units towards highly coveted, local views including the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, the Freedom tower, or views back into the park. Residential units include studio units, single bedrooms, and family units. Retail and community functions face the public spaces, where they are easily and most visible. Non-ideal views will be set for parking, back of house and core functions.
5. An additional criteria is set for the community program in these towers. In order to provide more to the neighborhood, the top and bottom floors of the top two segments are specifically reserved for community functions. These areas included additional balcony spaces, due to the odd overlaps of the segments from the rotations of each segment. As well, at these points, additional structure is needed to support the cantilevers of the segments. Heavy trusses line these floors on which the floors below were hung off of. Thus although the trusses obstruct views in all directions, these floors had the most unique conditions that cater towards the more unique community functions.
The development process: 1. Preferred views of the neighborhood is determined. 2. The tower is divided into three segments. The height of each segment is determined by surrounding local conditions with the height of the top segment set so that the lowest level of this segment starts at the top of highest tower in the field of view towards the bridge. The middle segment then is set so that the surrounding context directs the view inward towards the park. The bottom segment is set at a consistent 120 feet tall on all towers.

For example, one tower may be generally programmed as follows. The top segment typically houses the prime residential program or programs that desire highly coveted views of the city and other iconic points of Brooklyn, such as the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges. Due to the height of this segment, views from here are unobstructed. Thus this top segment rotates towards one of the iconic points of the city. The middle segment is primarily residential. It rotates towards the center of the park for a more private and peaceful view inward. The bottom segment holds the most public functions such as retail and other commercial and community programs. This segment rotates parallel to the nearest street, exposing the greatest surface area directly towards the street.

Niche, a recess particularly suitable for a person to occupy.
As population increases and the available space decreases, cities must decide how to handle the constant stream of corpses that go unclaimed every day.
Urban liche is driven by the interest not only in the concept of a cemetery, but specifically a cemetery within the city.
Because of both the limitations of space inherent to the urban context of New York City and due to the space requirements involved in the practice of traditional burial methods, cemeteries have been pushed to more rural areas and as a result to this, have been rendered vast “dead” zones. Even when few cemeteries are located within the city, the stigma attached to the concept of cemeteries creates a similar “dead” zone in the usually dense and bustling urban fabric.

The grim conception of cemeteries attaches a stigma to these desolate, vacant, empty spaces that are an unavoidable part of the future of our cities as death is inevitable. How might the way in which we physically deal with these unclaimed dead bodies, what can we do with them where we put them how we feel about them, and potentially revitalize the current grim conceptions of cemeteries and in turn, bring a new vitality to these “dead� urban spaces? What is the future of cemeteries?

HOW MANY BODIES FIT ON A 20,000 SQ. FT. PLOT OF LAND?
The goal is to de-stigmatize the physical and psychological implication of death and places of death creating a publicly used space while contributing ecologically and economically to the long existing practical problem of what happens to these unclaimed corpses in the limited urban condition of NYC.
Through the process of promession, the concept of a “cap� for the number of bodies in a cemetery is removed and is the initial catalyst that enables our proposal to move the cemetery back into the city. The question then is, how can we create a constantly living and thriving urban, public space?
Given a 20,000 sq. ft. site, the square footage is quickly filled by traditional burial and only holds a fraction more when cremation is used.

The human body is 70% water and the nutrients of the body is equivalent to one 50-pound bag of fertilizer which can feed 10 apples, 58 grape vines, 600 plus cauliflowers, etc. In other words, the corpse can feed and water crops.

DE-CENTRAL PARK
Situated on the end lot of a typical Manhattan block, the site is exposed to the east. Considerations of sun exposure and wind influenced the machine to come above ground. The machine tower is justified to the north to block the wind and it exposes optimum surface area of orchard space to the sun. Thus, the horizontal, vertical, and inclined surfaces can then be treated as productive growing surfaces.

Death is internalized. Through the machine, the body immortalized. ENVIRONMENTAL life is revitalized. The machine is contained within the mass of the ground and the mass of the tower internalizing the process. The body as a corpse is always hidden while the mechanics of the machine at times become revealed to the public.

The anatomy of the machine-- first, the corpse is delivered, hidden from the public below ground.
The water is then separated through the main body mass in the freeze dry, vacuum separation chamber.
It is refrigerated for 2 to 4 days.
The remaining mass is then sent through filters and magnets to separate metals and other impurities such as implants and fillings.
Then it is sent along a wheel and belt to freeze in liquid nitrogen for 4 to 6 hours. It is then sent up on a vibrating belt which shatters the body into tiny, unrecognizable pieces.
The remaining nutrients and the collection of water is fed through the pipes to the orchards which supply the market space below.
