ABOUT/ interior designer //vocal practiser // clay player // sea diver // barista // cat lover : ) Yannis graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and has established her experience in interior design at companies such as Edge Design Institute and Marc & Chantal Design. She was involved in various high-profile projects such as K11 retail and office showsuite in Guangzhou, wayfinding and signage design for Hong Kong Children’s Hospital, Citygate commercial showsuite for Swire Properties, the creation of VIP Lounge and Information Centre for TaiKoo Li Chengdu, as well as the Swire VIP Lounge at Art Basel HK 2014. Yannis has an eclectic range of interests – when she’s not in the office you may find her in her kitchen experimenting on a new recipe or making a latte at the cafe, in her studio practicing with her band, creating her own pottery collection or boxing at a fitness centre.

Visitors can control the orientation and size of the projected plan on the UMU glass based on their preference by the corian stone touch control next to the model.

To create an immersive showsuite for a crown jewel development in Guangzhou, at the base of the Guangzhou CTF Finance Centre, we emphasised the playful and innovative character of K11 Concepts with a holistic environment that included custom fragrances and a surreal design to transport visitors to the wonders of childhood, such as the treehouse of their dreams. Never forgetting the goal of the showsuite, each element combined to create a compelling experience of K11’ s unique retail vision.

the architecture

The pavilion is targeted at the passive house certification. According to the PHI (Passive House Institute) standard, the building must be designed to have an annual heating demand as calculated with the Passivhaus Planning Package of not more than 15 kWh/(m2a);and the building must not leak more air than 0.6 times the house volume per hour (n50 ≤ 0.6 / h) at 50 Pa (0.0073 psi) as tested by a blower door. Those strict standards make a lot of limitation of building insulation, area of openings & windows, air tightness of windows & doors, thermal bridges, even the rational space form & shape coefficient. Those limitation made the design work not so free as usual.

the approach As the leading development bring the passive house technology to large residential project in Mainland China. This experiential pavilion aims support the developer also to act as an education centre to the public. Visitor can have more understanding of the passive house technology, the positive benefits it can bring to our future living quality no matter on energy saving, health issue, the climate change or avoid pollution, etc.The Longfor passive house pavilion itself is a passive house which allows visitor experience the real conditions and the comfort it provide to our life. The exhibits involved lots of interaction devices and game in order to convey a fun and interesting experience instead of static data and illustrations.

“Our modern cities are made up of sharp angles and reflective surfaces that allow you to anticipate what lies around the corner. This play between people and architecture sets the scene for unexpected encounters and connections.�

artist statement The measure of our lives is in the routine, and breaks from it, that defines modern life. Cities have a way of organising days into train schedules, closing times and carefully orchestrated meetings that dictate the rhythm of urban lifestyles. But vibrant cosmopolitan communities also have a bustling humanity that sets the stage for serendipitous connections and surprises that rise above the everyday to become indelible memories. These special moments link people and are made more precious for the fleeting nature of each encounter. The installation is an optical maze that catches viewers off guard with filtered views, sound and around-the-corner vantage points. It brings people together, whether they are strangers or old friends. Using concepts borrowed from periscopes and magicians’ props, the mirrored walls bounce reflections from around the installation and transmit secret glances and lively expressions between viewers in all corners of the space. To enhance the feeling of the disjointed, but very real connections, the installation is linked by the continuous thread of a graphic yellow line. It turns, disappears and shows up again throughout the entire space and reinforces the perception of the angles found in the mirrored walls.

The 115 square meters of the lounge, overlooking Victoria Harbour and the Hong Kong skyline, is animated with 10 glass and mirror panels that create a myriad of visual perspectives, engaging visitors in a playful and fun manner. The 2.4 metre tall panels are made of 5 colours of glass that refract and tint views from throughout the lounge space. With precise positioning, the mirrored angles bounce reflections throughout the installation and visually link people standing on the continuous yellow pathway. Visitors are invited to take photos, hide amongst the maze and otherwise interact with the panels.

The playful monkey can support well the specialist out-patient clinic environment by engaging the patient in a number of activities distracting them from typical medical procedures performed on that floor.

The long-legged flamingo may be depicted exercising like a ballet performer or gymnastic athlete e.g. balancing on one leg to support messages about rehabilitation (eg. gait lab).

The big hearted and cuddly panda could be the perfect companion for children in the cardiology unit, the character may be depicted feeling tired or sleepy after mild exercise (an experience children with a heart condition may share).

A character symbolizing parenthood would be well suited for this floor (neonatal unit, parents overnight rooms, ambulatory chemo centre). Kangaroos can tell reassuring stories of strong bond between parent and child.

The parrot, along with other colourful birds could be depicted eating fruits and resting in the tree canopy, a suitable allegory for the general ward’s environment.

The pink dolphin may be pictured taking a bath to dry its spots (e.g. chicken pox). The sea/water environment suits depiction of small floating creatures that may support messages about life being full of microscopic life (bacteria, viruses), most being “good” or “neutral” for people but sometimes some are causing diseases which our bodies have to fight.

Following one user’s recommendation, the long legs of the octopus can have many meanings with regards to patients with neurophysical conditions. Procedures with lots of wiring, theme of longevity, connection among families... etc. Also, the under water environment suggests freedom and well being.
