EILEEN DAVID IN PLACE
OCTOBER 6 - NOVEMBER 11. 2023
The expressive oil paintings of Eileen David present a tranquility through her technical mastery of light, color, and shadow. Whether depicting the residential charm of San Francisco, where she currently resides, the grids of industrial urban life, or the steady strokes of swimmers, David’s observational paintings elevate every day moments to masterful scenes.
David spends time exploring San Francisco, making observations and connecting intimately with her surroundings. The understated aspects of every-day life fascinate her. She says, “As I roam the streets of the city or while driving in my car, I feel as an explorer, searching for those moments when I get a visceral response to what I see. Observation of same scenery repeated over time, the play of light in different atmospheric conditions, eventually render the ordinary, extraordinary.”
Her paintings of light-filled neighborhoods feature the underlying symmetry of the cityscape, as do her industrial paintings of highway overpasses, fuel trucks, and steel bridges. This exhibition not only highlights these beautiful built landscapes, but also features, in a diametric switch of subject to the human, her series of swimmers she observes in San Francisco Bay. Painted with deep blue, turquoise, and green colors, these works show a play of light and movement. The bright swim caps and swimsuits draw focus to the subjects, as if seeing them in quiet stop-motion while on their purposeful swim.
Born in New York City, Eileen David studied at The Arts Student League of New York, SUNY Purchase, New York, the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at San Francisco State University and a Master of Fine Arts at San Jose State University. Over her career, David has been awarded with various honors including a Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant and a Catherine Urban Scholarship.
