In his more linear works, Pomilio uses line itself as his subject, defining an abstract feeling of space through billowing, rhythmic energy. Here, lines seem to dance against the edge of each drawing, evoking tightly-coiled forces in a state of equilibrium. In another series of monochromatic panel-based drawings that fold away from the wall, Pomilio’s sweeping lines conjure a dynamic conversation between order, free gesture, and space.

Applied Abstractions Through subtle colors and a layered, expressive use of line, Mark Pomilio’s art references the forces and geometries of the natural world over a career that spans more than two decades. Mirroring the dynamic, interlocking systems that underlie our physical surroundings, Pomilio’s paintings and works on paper are each self-contained universes of softly layered forms and fluid calligraphic lines.

Pomilio’s works also suggest the aesthetic and symbolic potentials of rhythm and repetition. In his Elements series, fractal-like networks of hexagons, triangles, and ellipses evoke an endless array of repetition and variation. These and other more tonal paintings often seem to possess an inner glow, suggesting the sensation of light passing through the veins of floral tissue.

According to Pomilio, these visual illustrations of abstract scientific forces are an attempt to articulate his own wonder at the complexity and beauty of the natural world. “Expressing the fact that nature, both on a molecular level and grand scale, is in a perpetual state of change has become a basis for all my work,” Pomilio writes. “This is what is at the core; it is the essence of my pursuit.”

Also included in this exhibition is an impressive series of large-scale works in charcoal, which he calls his Primal Drawings. Pomilio writes, “Using the basic and ancient materials of charcoal and paper, my goal is to express the logic and beauty of simple geometrical systematic symmetries and how these symmetries can express an inherent primordial visual language.”
