Rubàiyàt f0r Flute, Baritone Voice & Piano
David Lewiston Sharpe
Note This is a setting of five quatrains from the four-line poems called rubaiyat attributed to Omar Khayyam (1048–1131 CE), translated from the Persian by Edward Fitzgerald. The verses are taken from the various editions of the rubaiyat, which originally contained 75 poems to which further selections were added – up to 101 in total – as the Fitzgerald continued to work on them and issue new editions. I consider this setting of Omar Khayyam’s poetry, written in 1994, to be my ‘opus 1’.
