Pullman ArtWalk May 11-13, 2017
Welcome to ArtWalk! This year’s event brings the community a vibrant mix of visual and performing arts for all ages to enjoy. ArtWalk celebrates regional art and local business to build community and redefine our shared space, adding to the vibrancy, economic vitality, and diversity of downtown Pullman! Join us for an Art Storytime on Thursday, May 11 at 11:30 a.m. at Neill Public Library. A Pullman Arts Commissioner will read a book and guide children through an engaging and creative art activity afterwards. Storytime is open to all children ages 2 – 12.
ArtWalk opening events start Friday, May 12 with artist workshops, followed by the Mayor’s Art Award ceremony at 5:30 p.m. at RTOP Theatre to recognize a local community member’s exceptional support of the arts. The fun continues at RTOP Theatre with the Artist Meet & Greet social mixer at 6:30 p.m. Artists, merchants, and general public can mix and mingle to celebrate art and the opening of ArtWalk. Entertainment at RTOP Theatre will feature a cabaret review of popular musical theater songs. Live entertainment, dynamic conversation and
great food await Friday night! The celebration of art and business continues throughout downtown on Saturday, May 13 from 4-8 p.m. Over 31 artists and 21 businesses are working together to make this year’s event amazing. There’s something for everyone! The PAC has brought other art experiences to Pullman. Last year, thanks to financial support from Avista Utilities, the PAC debuted Pullman’s first art wrapped utility box at the corner of Main St. & Grand Ave. The community response has been very positive and the PAC will add more wrapped utility boxes in the future. PAC’s most recent efforts have been to assist in the design phase of a Bus Stop Enhancement Pilot Project between WSU Collaborative and City of Pullman Transit. Exciting projects are underway so keep your eye on the PAC! The Pullman Arts Commission cultivates the visual and performing arts to enrich the quality of life of the community through its vision, advocacy, and financial support, connecting residents, students, and visitors to diverse aesthetic and cultural experiences. 2017 Mayor’s Award Recipient Rajeswari Soundararajan (Raji), is the artistic director of ‘Sudiksha’ Center for Classical Arts of India, here in Pullman, and has been actively teaching and performing a classical dance form of India called ‘bharatanatyam’ since 1999. Bharatanatyam is a vibrant, energetic, colorful and soulful dance form from India, dating back several hundred years. As an accomplished solo dancer, she has performed extensively in India, Vancouver B.C. (Canada), Pullman, Spokane and in Houston, TX. Since 2008, she has been showcasing this cultural dance with her students, through annual ‘Sudiksha’ charity dance concerts. These dance concerts are free for everyone. For the past nine years, she has raised over $6,000 through donations from Sudiksha dance
concerts for many non-profit charitable organizations in our Pullman/Palouse region. The 2017 dance concert held on April 15 raised funds to benefit the Pullman Education Foundation. Raji’s dance programs have been thoroughly enjoyed by the community, students of the Pullman School District and Washington State University as well as university employees. It is not only entertaining, but also educational and relaxing. Her goal in organizing these annual ‘Sudiksha’ dance events is to share her art with the Pullman/ Palouse community, and to engage her students in giving back to their community through their dance. Soundararajan’s contributions to the performing arts are numerous and her overall community awareness and
promotion for and support of the arts is commendable. The cultural diversity in her work and the charitable nature of her dance concerts is impressive. Her message of encouragement for students to give back to their community through their dance is an important one.

She teaches Italian and Spanish at WSU and has participated in workshops of gesture and figure drawing for almost 20 years. In addition, she has taken courses in ceramics and sculpture at the WSU Fine Arts Department.
Michael Porter: A glass blower for 15 years, Porter’s studio is at his store Glassphemy in downtown Pullman. He has learned from Robert A. Micklesen and Roger Parramore. Maria Sere Previto: An artist with the holistic view of life who considers that life and art are deeply linked. Previto has developed a series of portrait drawings using color chalk pastels that allow one to grasp the expression of the different persons she has portrayed. She likes bright colors and enjoys their contrast in rendering the feeling of light on the facial features. In her metal sculptures, she works with “found” pieces of metal, welding them in an additive process. In the creative process for these

Rachael Ritter: A local photographer and metalworker best known for black & white portrait and lifestyle prints expressing movement through landscapes and everyday objects. Ritter is a mother, a Montessori teacher, and a minimalist who attempts to capture the joy of simplicity in her photos. The Montessori School of Pullman’s Lower Elementary students will be creating Expressionist paintings of flowers. Jessica Schloss: Schloss creates whimsical dragons made of polymer clay, has lived in Pullman for almost seven years, and has worked with polymer clay for about four years. Rod Schwartz: Born and raised in Chicago, Schwartz backed into a lifelong career in radio advertising and has been sales manager for the Pullman Radio Group since 1979. Since 1991, he and his family have operated Grace Broadcast Sales, a provider of short-form syndicated audio features to radio and TV stations across the U.S. and Canada. He caught the shutter bug in 1977, when he bought his first 35mm SLR, a Minolta XE-7, to chronicle the everyday wonders and milestones of family life. Living in the Palouse has afforded him endless opportunities to explore and capture its unique beauty in photographs, with images having been published in magazines, on calendars, and in a variety of tourism publications and websites. He ticked an item off his photographic bucket list when he rode shotgun on Ben Barstow’s combine during the wheat harvest, a photo taken,
which awarded top cash prize in the McGregor Company’s contest at the Palouse Empire Fair the following month. Schwartz rarely travels without a camera at hand. For Artwalk 2017, Rod has chosen a selection of his personal favorite images, including Sunnyside Park Reflections, featured on the cover of the 2017 Pullman Activities Guide. Lee Sekaquaptewa: Meet a young emerging Native American Artist, who primarily works on paper including work such as (but not limited to): drawings, ink drawings, markers, colored pencils, charcoal, watercolors, and gouache. He studied at WSU briefly and produces a variety of work of varying styles and techniques; from illustrations and graphic design to paintings and music. Rhonda Skaggs: A parent, gardener, artist, volunteer, and former scientist. Skaggs lives in Pullman with her family, dog, and chickens, and is active in promoting the arts at Jefferson Elementary School. Katelin Thomas: An architectural associate at Design West Architects, Thomas is a freelance graphic designer. She began experimenting with watercolor while studying for her Master’s Degree in Architecture at the University of Idaho. Since graduating in 2015, she has continued to work with watercolor to depict architectural forms and has expanded her work to include colorful abstract pieces as well as letterpress.
PULLMAN ARTWALK 2017 May 11-13 Bill Voxman: You can find his photographs in various galleries in the Northwest and Midwest as well in many private collections. Voxman has traveled extensively in South America, Cuba, Europe, Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet and his black and white photographs reflect the diverse people he has met and the varied landscapes he has encountered. He is also a musician, and a member of Gefilte Trout, a group that specializes in Eastern European Klezmer music. Now a retired professor of mathematics from the University of Idaho, he greatly enjoys hiking, backpacking, and fly fishing in Idaho and elsewhere, which makes it a joy for him to remain in this area. Richard Weathermon: After retiring in 1985 after 35 years as a school administrator in Washington and the Philippines, Weathermon enrolled in a painting class and has been learning and perfecting his technique ever since. His love of Pacific Northwest landscapes, inspired by a lifetime of hiking and fishing, has provided the subject matter for his art. Mount Rainier, the fields of the Puyallup Valley, the Olympic Peninsula, and Southeast Alaska are among the landscapes he has focused on. He sells original art at galleries in Sitka, Juneau, and Ketchikan, and was a demonstrator at the Western Washington State Fair for many years, and was superintendent of schools in Pullman 1971-1976. He has returned to Pullman recently to live with his daughter and grandson.
Ernie Weiss: With a degree in Architecture and MBA from WSU, Weiss has been expressing his love for nature, architecture and other subjects for about 12 years. He has participated in over 30 group shows and 11 solo shows. He works in watercolor and oils with a wide variety of subjects. Destiny Whitcomb: Western Washington based artist, Whitcomb is a graduate student with an emphasis in painting. From Issaquah, she moved to Pullman to pursue her passion for art at Washington State University. She creates art out of anything she can. She pursues her passion for art in Pullman presently and is always searching for new experiences. Joe Whitney: A local welder and metal worker, Whitney enjoys using found and discarded metal along with organic pieces to create his sculptures.
