BIG BUCK CONTEST

Old school mindset nets buck of a lifetime, winner By NICK WAGNER

Sentinel correspondent MILROY — Tom Riden has never been one for flashy hunting equipment. If you ask him, he would tell you he’s “old school.” That old school mentality provided one of the most successful hunting days Riden has ever been a part of. Riden, 47, of Milroy, was recently named winner of The Sentinel Big Buck Contest Adult Division. Riden bagged a 15-point, non-typical whitetail during the last week of archery season. The buck featured a spread greater than 25 inches, while its bases each measured five inches around. Off the main frame of the buck were two drop tines, and several little kickers that added the total points up to 15. “I think it’s pretty cool,” Riden said. “I knew there were deer in the area, but I didn’t know he was in the area.” Riden, who said he has

Tom Riden, of Milroy, shot this 15-point buck at 8 a.m. on Nov. 9 with a week left in archery season. Riden used a Mathews Bow. The outside spread measured 25 1/4 inches. He plans to get a shoulder mount.

hunted the same family land his entire life, was set up in his tree stand in Derry Township around 8 a.m. on Nov. 9. With only a week left in the archery season, he knew that he had rifle season in his back pocket. But just over an hour after daylight, that mindset changed. As he was watching some doe, he caught a glimpse of antlers out of the corner of his eye. The buck walked just 20 yards from his stand when Riden drew back his Mathews compound bow. After he fired his shot, Riden say the buck dropped 30 yards from his tree stand. Riden knew it was a legal buck, but this was something special. “His head was down sniffing some does, and I didn’t really know how big he was,” Riden said. “I was pretty much in awe when I finally got down and picked his head up.” Most modern hunters, with the use of technology, usually know what deer are in the area thanks to game cameras. Riden said he likes to stay out

of the woods until it’s time to hunt. Therefore, he doesn’t use any game cameras and is very cognizant of keeping his scent clear of the timber. Riden admitted all the technology, outside of hunting, is putting a damper on the amount of young hunters he sees in the woods. Riden has a 9-year-old son who likes to spend time in the outdoors, but isn’t so much into killing the animals yet. “Hunting is great and I think more kids need to do that,” he said. “Outdoors is where it’s at. My son loves animals. I’m not pushing him into anything he doesn’t want to do. If he hunts great, and if he doesn’t that’s all right too.” The buck, which is Riden’s largest in his hunting career, will be mounted on his wall with care. As for the venison, he’s got some big plans. “We eat it a lot — cream of mushrooms with egg noodles in a crockpot,” he said. “And of course the backstraps.”

First buck a win for Tressler By NICK WAGNER

Sentinel correspondent

TROUT RUN — Just an hour after daylight on the first day of rifle buck season in Pennsylvania, Howard Tressler III’s hunting career changed forever. Tressler, 16, of Trout Run, who has family in Derry Township, bagged a buck of a lifetime after just four years of hunting to win The Sentinel Big Buck Contest Youth Division. It was his first whitetail buck, but not his first deer. “I was in so much shock,” Tressler said when he finally approached his deer on opening day. “I thought it was only a six point.” The buck featured nine points and sported a spread greater than 21 inches. The bases of the antlers measured five inches each. At approximately 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, Tressler was hunting with his father, Barry Zimmerman Jr. and his grandfather, Barry Zimmerman Sr. in Juniata County. While sitting on the ground with his father, Tressler noticed a couple doe coming up behind the hunting pair. Moments later, Tressler said he noticed something moving in the brush. He saw the buck’s white underside and the buck stepped into view. From around 60 yards,

Tressler took his shot with his .30-.30. The buck ran about 35 yards prior to expiring. “It was most definitely one of the best experiences I ever had besides my children,” Tressler’s father said. “I was probably more excited than him. You can’t explain it.” The duo didn’t know the buck was in the area, but did know they had a good chance of seeing something with antlers that day. But whether it has antlers or not, Tressler is more worried about enjoying the hunting experiences with his family. “I’m not all about killing,” he said. “It’s just about having fun and I get to do it with my family.” While most kids his age are content with spending most of their days inside playing video games, Tressler knows what the great outdoors have to offer. He said he has friends that Howard Tressler III, of Trout Run, shot his first buck at 8 a.m. on Nov. 30 in Milford Township in Juniata County. The enjoy hunting, but he also has nine-point buck has an outside spread of 21 3/4 inches. He was hunting with Barry Zimmerman Sr., and Barry Zimpeers that are not interested in merman Jr. the sport anymore. “Video games are just a waste of time and it ruins the mind,” he said. “Get outside, get some fresh air and exercise.” His father had the same sentiment. “A lot of kids would rather be on their phone or computer,” he said. “They don’t know what they are missing. As adults we need to try to push to keep the kids going or they won’t hunt anymore.” Give the gift of LOCAL HISTORY with the 2019 limited-edition Sentinel hardback book. They’ll cherish 152 pages of “Twice Told Tales” from our area.
