FALL EVENTS
GOOSE DAY EVENTS This local tradition has been observed in the Juniata River Valley for more than two centuries, carried here by an early local settler. Legend has it that if you eat goose on St. Michaelmas Day, you will never want for money all the year round. Believers of this tradition adhere faithfully to this tradition and eat goose every Sept 29, thus ensuring wealth and prosperity for the coming year. Goose Day is the American version of the Christian festival of Michaelmas. It honors Archangel Michael for defeating Satan in the war in heaven. It is said that when St. Michael threw the devil from heaven, he fell from the skies and landed in a prickly blackberry bush. Satan cursed the fruit, scorched them with his fiery breath, stamped and spat on them, so that they would be unfit for eating. Folklore suggests that Michaelmas Day is the last day to eat blackberries. St. Michaelmas Day was first declared a festival by Pope Gelasius in the year AD 487. The feast, which always falls on Sept. 29, honors Saint Michael the Archangel who led God’s war against evil in the biblical book of Revelation. The Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau has assembled a list of all the restaurants in Mifflin and Juniata counties that are serving the lucky bird on Sept. 29. Along with goose there are several other delicious treats as well. Due to demand, you are strongly encouraged to call ahead and make sure
