Work out at the YMCA Activities offered for all ages, interests By GREG WILLIAMS
Sentinel Correspondent BURNHAM — You don’t have to sing like the Village People to know it’s fun to stay at the YMCA — or at least to work out there. The Juniata Valley YMCA offers a variety of programs for individuals of all ages, says Executive Director Victoria Searer. “The YMCA is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities,” Searer explains. “Every day our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when a community comes together for the common good. Our YMCA is more than just a gym. “The YMCA has touched so many lives in the community, from parents who have witnessed their children flourishing in reading or taking that first unassisted leap into a swimming pool, to adults of all ages who are on the road to health and wellness; to those who volunteer their time and contribute financially,” she adds. YOUTH SPORTS EMPOWERS CHILDREN WITH FRIENDLY COMPETITION The YMCA’s youth sports programs nurture the potential of children by strengthening character, engaging families and building lasting relationships. Athletes develop skills, learn about teamwork and focus on sportsmanship. They set individual and team goals, building confidence, increase self-esteem and improve physical conditioning. Athletes also will learn social skills and healthy habits that can last a lifetime. “Absolutely! Our youth sports programs develop lifelong skills, build confidence, encourage kids to be active for life and, Page 4
most importantly, they have fun when they come to the YMCA,” Searer says. “We work hard to provide youth sports for all ages and abilities. We try to have a variety of youth sports at the YMCA for every interest.” Additionally, families can become involved through volunteering as coaches, team parents and committee members. Youth sports include: Basketball — The Y has two full-sized basketball courts for shooting around or playing pick-up games or organized recreational leagues for all ages. Gymnastics — Fun and comprehensive programs are available for children in different age groups, toddlers and up. Indoor rock climbing — The biggest rock-climbing wall in the area offers routes for climbers at every level. See YMCA / Page 6

Indoor soccer — The soccer classes and team play teach skills, improve coordination and encourage fair play, positive attitude and teamwork. Judo, Jujitsu and Karate — Sensei Dave instructs all ages from youth to adult sessions.
ADULT SPORTS: PROGRAMS ARE NOT JUST FOR KIDS Looking for a fun way to stay fit? Do you have a competitive streak? Whether you want to play a favorite sport or anxious to try something new, the Y offers a variety of recreational and league sports for adults. “At the Y, strengthening the community is our cause,” Searer says. “We believe everyone regardless of age, income or background deserves the right to be healthy, learn, grow and thrive.” Adult sports include basketball, rock climbing and martial arts, along with: Pickleball — A paddleball sport combining elements of badminton, table tennis and tennis, play is open to ages 16 and up. Racquetball — Battle it out with friends on one of the Y’s racquetball courts. Volleyball — The Y’s friendly volleyball league is a blast for all ages. Also offered are handball, Ping Pong and Tai Chi.
CAMP: THE ULTIMATE SUMMER EXPERIENCE Want a summer experience packed with games, activities, swimming, trips and more? Sign up for the Y’s Summer Camp. The camp-goers will enjoy exploring adventures — from Greenwood to Buttonwood and places in between. Summer camp is a time for cookouts and campfires, hikes and swimming as well as an opportunity to make new friends and strengthen existing friendships. Page 6
“On the surface, summer day camp is a fun getaway for kids to help fill the time during summer break, but on a deeper level, it’s so much more,” Searer says. “Summer camp is a supportive, creative, nurturing environment where kids will grow physically, emotionally and improve self-esteem.” There’s time to try new things, such as kayaking or rock climbing, playing miniature golf or relaxing on the beach. Of course, there are also waterpark trips, 4-H Fair days, arboretum days, laser tag games and, of course, time for ice cream. “Kids will also make new friends,” she adds. “Campers bond through fun activities and challenges, helping them make memories that will last a lifetime.” Summer camps are open to boys and girls who have completed kindergarten through sixth grade. Times are 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Pre-registration discounts are available.
CHILD WATCH: FOR WHEN YOU’RE WORKING OUT The Child Watch program might be one of your child’s first experiences at the Y. Toddlers, preschoolers and children ages 10 and under look forward to coming to the Y to join in activities in a safe and secure environment. The Child Watch staff offers a fun setting for kids, allowing parents to use the Y’s facilities and focus more on themselves. This program is free with your YMCA membership. Pre-registration is encouraged. “Our goal is to provide a positive experience for children in a safe, healthy and secure environment, while the parent uses our facility,” Searer says. “We know for many people finding time for a workout can be a complicated task, and this is especially true for parents. “Finding a gym with childcare is like hitting the jackpot for many parents because it allows them to get in some exercise and to have a little bit of time to See YMCA / Page 7

themselves,” she adds.
PRESCHOOL: KIDS LOVE THE GYM AND TO SWIM Children have an opportunity to learn in a positive, creative environment, while enjoying time in the gym and swimming pool. Parents can relax knowing their children are in good hands with the Y’s Child Watch staff. “Yes! The sooner a child is involved in a program or activity at the YMCA, the more likely they are to become a life-long member or supporter,” Searer says. “We have witnessed many success stories of people coming full circle at the YMCA from attending youth programs to now being an adult utilizing the YMCA, as well
as people crediting the YMCA for being that place that kept them from hanging out on the streets and going down the wrong path. “The YMCA is definitely more than a gym, we are a cause,” she explains. Classes are available for ages 3 to 5. “For 163 years, the YMCA has been a vital support system for children, families and adults,” Searer says. “As our community builds back after the pandemic, at the YMCA, we are working toward creating a healthier future for everyone. “Now more than ever, kids and families are in need of YMCA programs and services that help build character, encourage positive life skills and promote healthy choices,” she adds.

Ask your doctor
What to discuss during wellness visit By DR. CYNTHIA ALEXANDER
Mount Nittany Physician Group Annual wellness visits are important for our health, especially as we age. Being proactive about your healthcare can literally save your life. In fact, getting your vitals taken can help detect early warning signs for potentially serious issues. Catching these indicators early and starting preventive treatment can make all the difference. While annual wellness visits are typically conducted in person, at this time, an in-person visit may not be feasible or wise for some patients. Thankfully, virtual or telehealth visits allow these necessary preventive health checks to move forward. Virtual or telehealth visits offer the convenience of having a visit with your trusted provider in the comfort of your home, your office — or anywhere. To learn more about telehealth visit mountnittany.org/telehealth. To help you get the most out of your appointment, here are the top 10 questions to bring up during your time in the exam room in person or virtually. 1. Can you review my medications and make sure I am taking them as prescribed? Sometimes, the medications you’re taking may no longer be needed. Many medications treat symptoms only, and over time those symptoms can go away or alter on their own, independent of the medicine itself. 2. Does my family’s health put me at risk? Doctors know to ask about your family’s past illnesses during a first exam, but it’s likely that your family history has changed slightly since you’ve last seen your doctor. Update your doctor on recent health events concerning relatives, Page 10
and ask if you are at risk for anything based on the new information. 3. Am I getting enough exercise? Regular physical activity is important to overall health and wellness. Plus, exercise can help you control your weight, reduce your heart disease risk, and strengthen your bones and muscles. Generally, moderate physical activity such as brisk walking is safe for most people. But if it’s been a while since you’ve exercised and you have health issues or concerns, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting a new exercise routine. 4. How is my blood pressure? Sometimes, if your blood pressure isn’t alarmingly high or low, the doctor won’t See Questions / Page 11

tell you the exact number unless you ask. However, it can never hurt to get the exact number if you are worried about tracking it due to your family history or your own medical history. 5. Would you recommend any additional annual screenings? As we all get older, it’s important to be proactive about our health. You may want to ask your doctor if he or she thinks that you should start any annual screenings, like a mammogram or colonoscopy, a bit sooner based on your family and medical history. 6. How is my weight? Weight can be a very touchy subject, but it can affect your health in very serious ways. It’s important to have a non-judg-
mental discussion with your doctor if you are pushing the boundaries one way or another, and to talk about how you can get to the healthiest version of yourself. 7. What do I need to do between now and my next visit? Ultimately, your health is in your hands. You and your doctor should take the time to talk about what kinds of things you need to be doing in your daily life in order to stay healthy — from dietary choices to lifestyle decisions. 8. What important questions haven’t I asked? Doctors are people, too, and they might be a bit forgetful. Sometimes they can forget to bring up a topic of discussion, and if you ask them if there is anything that you’ve missed, that little reminder won’t hurt. 65 Forward clinic coming Specialty care for seniors offered Have you ever seen your primary care doctor, then needed to travel to different locations for lab work, screenings or imaging? Convenient elder care is coming to Reedsville — checkups, screenings and imaging, all under one roof. Maintaining good health should be easier than that — especially as we age and face new or different health-related issues. And maybe finding transportation becomes a challenge, too. Geisinger 65 Forward brings more services under one roof, making healthcare much more convenient for those age 65 and older. “Geisinger 65 Forward health and wellness centers offer everything you need in a calm, relaxing environment that feels more like a spa than a clinic,” says Dr. Page 12
George Avetian, family medicine doctor with 65 Forward. “You’ll get same-day appointments, longer visits, social and educational activities and a personal wellness plan, all in one place.” It’s healthcare that’s specifically designed to make members’ lives longer, healthier and easier — and it’s coming to Mifflin County. The newest 65 Forward location is being constructed in Reedsville and is projected to open in the fall. Each 65 Forward member is teamed up with a primary care doctor who leads their care team and gets to know them personally. Take charge of heart health Tips for controlling you cholesterol levels (Family Features) Cholesterol — a waxy substance created by the liver or consumed from meat, poultry and dairy products — isn’t inherently “bad” for you. In fact, your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. However, too much “bad” LDL cholesterol, or not enough “good” HDL cholesterol, can pose problems. High cholesterol is one of the major controllable risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Because it typically has no symptoms, you may not know you have high cholesterol until it’s causing problems. Knowing key health numbers like blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol, and working closely with your doctor to manage them, are keys to preventing heart disease and stroke. Page 16
Those who have already experienced a heart attack or stroke or have family history of cardiovascular disease, chronic inflammatory disease or kidney disease may need to have their cholesterol and other risk factors checked more often and may need medication to manage their conditions to prevent another event. According to the American Heart Association, as many as 1 in 4 survivors will have another heart attack or stroke. Along with taking medication as prescribed, some lifestyle habits can help manage your risk and help you live a longer, healthier life like watching what you eat, getting more exercise and managing stress. MAKE HEALTHY MENU CHOICES A healthy eating plan is a well-rounded diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables (at least 4-5 servings each day). In fact, researchers at the University of Columbia found each daily serving of fruits or vegetables was associated with a 4% lower risk of coronary heart disease and a 5% lower risk of stroke. Other smart choices for your menu include nuts and seeds, whole grains, lean proteins and fish. Limit sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, saturated fat, trans fat, sodium and fatty or processed meats.

but an Oxford University study revealed simply swapping 30 minutes of sitting with low-intensity physical activity can reduce your risk of death by 17%. Mortality aside, in its Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services noted physical activity offers numerous benefits to improve health, including a lower risk of diseases, stronger bones and muscles, improved mental health and cognitive function and lower risk of depression. The greatest impacts come from getting the recommended amount of activity: at least 150 minutes of moderate activity, 75 minutes of vigorous activity or a combination of those activities per week. real consequences on both emotional and physical health. In fact, research shows chronic stressors like long work hours, financial stress and work-life conflict
may be as risky for health as secondhand smoke, according to a report by the Behavior Science and Policy Association. Aside from the toll on your body - including elevated risk for heart disease and stroke from high blood pressure, depression or anxiety - stress can lead to unhealthy habits like overeating, physical inactivity and smoking. Exercise is an effective way to keep your body healthy and release stress. You might also consider incorporating meditation and mindfulness practices into your day to allow yourself a few minutes to distance yourself from daily stress. Research compiled by the American Heart Association suggests meditation can reduce blood pressure, improve sleep, support the immune system and increase your ability to process information.
