Ensure your family’s peace of mind. Contact a director at one of our three locations and we will help you make pre-planning arrangements.
This year, make it a hometown holiday season “Strings of streetlights, even stoplights blinkin’ bright red and green as the shoppers rush home with their treasures.” Familiar words taken from the Christmas classic, “Silver Bells.” This is the image I visualize as I anticipate the holiday shopping season. I envision my friends and neighbors dodging snowflakes as they dash in and out of our local businesses with determined looks on their faces as the seek the perfect gifts for their loved ones. Shopping local is something that we as the Chamber of Commerce advocate for year-round, but especially emphasize during the holiday shopping season. This year, the advantages to the holiday shopper, as well as the business owner, are even greater than previous years. Rhonda Kelley Due to supply chain issues and labor shortages, most large box stores are experiencing delays and store shelves remain empty. At the same time, many of our local businesses are still struggling to recover from the loss of income experienced due to the far-reaching effects of the pandemic. The resulting outcome is the perfect scenario for making the choice to shop local even more appealing. Do not forget you can shop local online as well — many local businesses have online stores where you can shop from the comfort of your home while keeping dollars within your community. If you are on a quest to find that special something for your special someone, why not look right down the street, or around the corner? Not only will you be purchasing a unique and distinctive gift, but you can also walk out of the store with your head held high, bag swinging, feeling good while doing it! That spring in your step is because you realize that those dollars spent shopping local can then be reinvested into your community. Perhaps that store owner can then hire more employees, expand their inventory, or even just pay their bills. Local business owners are also very passionate about their businesses and their connections to their communities. This leads to better and more personal customer service. The big box stores certainly have their place in our community but posted strong profits this year. Let’s think small and local first and concentrate on spreading the wealth into our own neighborhoods. Not sure what specific items to purchase? Think gift cards! Most local shops have them available. Keep your eye on your favorite local store’s media to find out when they receive new products or announce special sales or extended shopping hours. The choice to shop local also provides an opportunity for you to enjoy a unique holiday shopping experience with friends and family. Make it a day of memory creating and be sure to include a stop at your favorite coffee shop, winery, See Hometown / Page 5

distillery or restaurant to refuel (and while you are there don’t forget to pick up some products to go!). Don’t forget your local florists. Flowers make a wonderful hostess gift and liven up any home during the holidays. You could also surprise that special someone with a unique floral creation delivered to their home or workplace. Another local gift-giving option is to give the gift of an experience or membership. Gyms, for instance, were severely impacted by the pandemic and are struggling to recover. A membership to your local gym would benefit both the owner as well as the recipient. Many local artisans also offer classes where you can get in touch with your artistic side. Perhaps you could give the experience of an afternoon throwing pottery or trying their hand at painting. For the golfer on your list consider a membership to their favorite course. How about giving the gift of pampering? Our local spas and salons are also feeling the residual effects from lost revenues incurred during the shut-down. Anyone would love to receive the gift of a massage, manicure/pedicure, or updated look! Another gift experience idea is to book a “staycation” at one of our local hotels, motels, bed and breakfasts, or campgrounds. This is another segment of the hospitality industry that is in recovery. Imagine the kids enjoying a dip in the in-
door pool in the middle of winter or spending quality family time around the campfire (if you are lucky, they may even turn off their devices!). For the outdoors person on your list, consider a trip to your local RV dealer or outdoor shop where you can find a wide variety of camping supplies such as mountain pie makers, hot dog forks, and many other items you can utilize as you enjoy the great outdoors. Here is an idea that is certainly sure to please, but may not have been on your radar: How about giving the gift of time? Yes, it is possible, when giving the gift of a house cleaning, yard service, or even car service. These gifts free up time for the recipient to experience a variety of memory making adventures. Even on a limited budget, you can send your gift recipient on an exotic adventure, sweep them up into a romantic escapade, submerge them into a spell-binding mystery, or give them direction on how to improve their overall well-being, all without leaving their living room. This can be accomplished simply by purchasing a book at your local bookstore. It is especially important to begin exposing your children to the literary world as it does wonders to increase their vocabulary and to assist them as they develop their imaginations and creativity. For those who have everything they could possibly want or need, consider purchasing consumables. Many local businesses have beautiful fruit baskets, baskets featuring adult beverages, locally roasted coffee beans, hand-dipped chocolates, a plethora of homemade baked goods, or perhaps a variety of See Hometown / Page 6

Squishmallow plush toy Rocio the dinosaur, Prehistoric Squad, Collector No. 680.
Squishmallows: Collectible Toy of the Future Editor’s note: Dr. Lori appears in The Sentinel’s Saturday Living section the first week of each month. Don’t know which contemporary toy is the best one to buy for everybody on your list this holiday season? While many toys make great gifts, some toys will be collectibles of the future. So, as an expert who reviews and researches the patterns of collecting in the art, antiques, and collectibles markets, I have my picks of the toys to buy and keep for the long run. What is my pick for the holiday toy of choice in 2021? Squishmallows. I think the soft plush toys that second for cuddly pillows with cutesy and culturally signifi-cant names, complex backstories and strong designs called Squishmallows are highly collectible and will hold their value with collectors for the long term. Dr. Lori Squishmallows are to the 2020s what Verdarame Beanie Babies were to the 1990s. And, as an See Dr. Lori / Page 8

expert in such things, I should know. Squishmallows are not only the next big toy craze, they are the current big toy craze. Only a few years since their introduction in the autumn of 2017, the collectible Squishmallows toys in their many versions have achieved the type of widespread interest that was enjoyed by Boyd’s Bears, Cabbage Patch Kids and Ty Inc. Beanie Babies. Squishmallows are organized and marketed differently than most plush toys. For example, Squishmallows debuted in thematic squads like the Fantasy squad, Prehistoric squad, Buddy squad, etc. with certain items included within a category or squad. Each Squishmallow has its own character name, squishdate (which is likened to a birthdate), collector number, character back story and, of course, the all-important — and God forbid you remove it — printed tag. The fun plush toys are available in four sizes: 5 inches tall, 8 inches tall, 12 inches tall and 16 inches tall, ranging in price from approximately $5 to $20 each. The cost is attractive to all ages. Kids can afford their low price in order to make additions to their Squishmallow collections. Adults collect them too. In fact, I was interviewed about appraising collectible Squishmallows recently, and the 20-something reporter admitted that she and her friends are
wild about collecting the cuddly creature toys. That didn’t surprise me, as young adults are enthusiastic plush toy collectors for many reasons. One reason is that the age group grew up with the 1990s collectible toy crazes. Kellytoy, the California plush toy manufacturer that makes and markets Squishmallows, introduced the brand in 2017 and enjoys widespread interest and sales — more than 55 million in sales to date. The complete Squishmallows Squad includes more than 800 plush characters in various sizes. The plush toys are simple in their design and feature colorful and textural attributes that make the toys attract to the collecting public. Squishmallows are made from super soft spandex EF and polyester stuffing. Each toy is washable. Collectors look for some of the same elements in a Squishmallow as Ty Inc. Beanies Babies. Tags are important to authentication and value since there are fakes out there trying to imitate the toys. To an appraiser and market analyst like me, Squishmallows have all the stuff that will make them a mainstay in the collectible toy market for many years to come. Get yours now while you can. All the kids and adults on your holiday shopping list will thank you for it. ••• Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and award-winning TV personality, Dr. Lori appears on The Curse of Oak Island on History Channel. Get to know Boxing Day Many people may get their fill of boxes on Christmas Day. However, people living in certain countries, including Canada, know that there may be some more boxes in store on the day after Christmas as well. Boxing Day is an annual holiday celebrated in Canada on December 26. Canadians are not alone in celebrating Boxing Day, which is observed in Australia, the United Kingdom and New Zealand, among other countries. The origin story behind Boxing Day is not entirely known. One theory regarding those origins connect the holiday to 19th century England and the giving of boxes that included money, presents and/or food to British servants on the day after Christmas. The servants had to work on Christmas while their employers celebrated, so they waited until the following day to celebrate with their families. The boxes were a token of appreciation and a way to make servants’ celebrations more bountiful and enjoyable. Another theory links Boxing Day to collection boxes for the poor. Long known as a time of giving, the holiday season was a time to give to the poor. So when the boxes were opened on the day after Christmas, they were full and the money within them was then distributed to the less fortunate.

Keep your tree fresh Christmas trees are often the piece de resistance of holiday decor. Few things draw the attention of holiday guests quite like an awe-inspiring Christmas tree, especially when that tree maintains its fresh, healthy sheen throughout December. Many families purchase fresh trees over Thanksgiving weekend or during the first weekend of December. Though the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day may seem like a long time to keep a tree looking great, there are a handful of ways for holiday celebrants to help their trees maintain that undeniable appeal for the long haul. ¯ Pick the right tree. Choosing the right tree is one of the simplest ways to keep a tree looking good throughout the holiday season. A freshly cut tree that buyers choose and cut down themselves or have cut down can reassure them that the tree is likely to stay strong throughout December. Trees purchased from a tree lot may have been cut down long before they made it to the lot, which can make it harder to keep them looking good until Christmas Day. ¯ Cut an inch off the base of any tree that is not freshly cut. MSU Extension at Michigan State University notes that all Christmas trees are conifers, which means they have resin canals in their trunks. Once a tree is cut, the resin can block the pores and make it harder for the tree to take in water. Cutting an inch off the base of a tree that was not freshly cut just before putting it in the stand can help ensure it gets the water it needs to stay healthy and firm. MSU Extension notes that this approach should be taken with any tree that was not cut within six to eight hours of being put in a stand. ¯ Replenish the water supply every day. Fresh tree veterans recognize that Christmas trees can be very thirsty, especially within the first week or so of being cut and brought home. Fill the stand with water each morning and, if necessary, refill it each night before going to bed. The more water a tree gets and drinks, the more likely it is that the tree will look healthy all the way to Christmas Day. MSU Extension notes that many decorative or antique tree stands do not hold much water, so anyone with such a stand may need to replenish the water supply more than once or twice per day. ¯ Keep the tree away from a heat source. For safety’s sake, trees should be kept away from heating vents, fireplaces and space heaters. But keeping trees away from such heat sources, and ensuring they are not spending the daytime in direct sunlight, also decreases the chances they will dry out before Christmas Day. A handful of simple strategies can help holiday celebrants keep their Christmas trees looking good throughout the month of December.

How to care for fresh holiday wreaths Majestic Christmas trees garner the lion’s share of the decorative fanfare when the holidays arrive. Trees may be the focal points of holiday decor, but the humble wreath adorning the front door is the first decoration guests are likely to see when visiting a home. Wreaths may need some care to maintain their beauty all month long. Here are some tips to help holiday wreaths last as long as possible.
CHOOSE A WREATH WISELY When shopping for a wreath, choose freshly cut greenery that you assemble yourself; otherwise, look for wreaths made from freshly cut boughs with their foliage intact. Make sure not too many needles or leaves are falling off. Heavily decorated, preassembled wreaths may be convenient, but ornaments can make it challenging to give the wreath the moisture it needs to survive.
MOISTURE/WATER Access to moisture will help to keep the wreath fresh. While a Christmas tree trunk may sit inside of a stand filled with water, wreaths require a little ingenuity. According to
the wreath and garland retailer Club Botanic, if you will not be hanging a freshly purchased wreath right away, keep it in a plastic liner in a cool, dark place to help it retain moisture. Just make sure you don’t seal that liner closed. Before hanging, lay the wreath in a couple of inches of water for about an hour or up to a day so that the cut stems can soak up water. Once the wreath is hanging on a door or elsewhere, spritz it with water every few days to prevent it from drying out.
LOCATION IS EVERYTHING Where you hang the wreath is key to its longevity. Wreaths and garlands hung indoors likely won’t last as long as those hung outside, advises the floral retailer Bouqs. com. Evergreen boughs tend to require a colder climate to thrive, and indoor heat can prematurely zap moisture from the wreath. Using a humidifier indoors or misting the wreath may help. It’s probably best to hang fresh wreaths outdoors, but avoid direct sunlight, which can dry out the greenery. Slightly shaded spots are best. If your front door is bathed in full sun for hours, hang an ar-
