He was an active member who excelled on the soccer, basketball and baseball teams. He continued playing several sports through his college years at Susquehanna University. for more than three decades before retiring in the early 2000s. Dennis was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Southampton, Pennsylvania. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, reading, traveling and loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching their events. Harry A. Baumgardner Jr., 91, of Mifflintown, passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021, at Valley View Haven Retirement Community in Belleville. Born Dec. 4, 1930, in Lewistown, he was the son of the late Harry A. Baumgardner Sr. and Blanche Esther (Taylor) Baumgardner. Harry graduated from Lewistown High School in 1948, Shippensburg State College in 1956, and Ohio State University in 1966. He served in The United States Air Force from 1948 to 1952 and was discharged as a staff sergeant. He served in education as a teacher, coach, mathematics supervisor, assistant business manager and business manager for 37 years. 36 of these years were in Juniata County. Harry was a past member of Mifflintown Rotary and was a Methodist by faith. Graveside services for the family will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021, at Mount Rock Cemetery. Phyllis M. Bitting, 91, of Valley View Terrace, Belleville, and formerly of Lewistown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. Born Sept. 10, 1930, in Lewistown, she was a daughter of the late Calvin Bargo Sr. and Dorothy (Eisenhower) Bargo. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn E. (Skip) Bitting, whom she married March 1, 1952; sister, Shirley Bargo and a brother, Calvin Bargo Jr. and daughter-in- law Diana Bitting. Phyllis was Brethren by faith and was married at Maitland Church of the Brethren. She was a 1949 graduate of Derry Township High School. Phyllis was a very giving person and helped raise funds for both arthritis and cancer. She belonged to Penn Highlands Band Boosters and volunteered in multiple organizations wherever her children were involved. Phyllis especially enjoyed the holidays and took pride in decorating her home. She enjoyed being outdoors tending to the flowers and caring for the birds. She was an avid Philadelphia Phillies and NASCAR fan; her favorite driver was Jeff Gordon. She loved her large family and enjoyed spending time with everyone, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Donald H. Black

Donald H. Black, 94, of Lewistown, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021. Born Feb. 27, 1927, in western Pennsylvania, he was the son of a coal miner and homemaker, the late Walter E. and Florence (Shaffer) Black. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Alice (Rowland) Black, and siblings, Philip Black, Marion Rose, and Ralph Black. Mr. Black is survived by: son, Timothy Black and wife, Paulette, of Lewistown, and daughter, Joyce Black, of Mechanicsburg; grandchildren, Adam Black, and Seth Black and wife Anjelica; and two great-grandchildren. A child during the Great Depression, his first job was working for a local farmer in the fields and selling vegetables. He later helped keep order at the roller rink as a skate boy. At 17, Donald desperately wanted to join the war effort. When his father finally gave him permission, he walked 20 miles to enlist in the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to

the USS Fond Du Lac for her entire commission, including participation in the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious invasion of the Pacific campaign. Years later, Donald served as reunion coordinator for his shipmates. He always enjoyed organizing and attending the annual event. After the war, he had jobs selling automobiles, repairing miners’ lamps, and selling insurance. He met Alice through mutual friends and they moved to Lewistown when he accepted a sales manager position with American General Life Insurance. He retired from American General over 35 years ago. Enthusiastic travelers, Donald and Alice made sure to see all 50 states, toured across Europe, sailed the coast of South

America, and even visited the Soviet Union. He always planned fun, interesting and memorable summer family vacations. He had wonderful memories of trips they took with friends. Regardless of where they traveled, though, he always felt the United States offered the most beautiful places to visit. In retirement, Donald liked to read periodicals and watch World War II movies and documentaries. He was devoted to his family and his greatest joy was spending time with friends and family. He was a graduate of Ebensburg Cambria High School. Mr. Black was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ebensburg American Legion, and Lewistown Presbyte-

rian Church. A viewing was Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021, at HellerHoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown. as vice president. Samuel retired from Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission as comptroller after 15 years of service. He was a graduate of Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa., where he attended the college preparatory school Grades 7-12. Sam was a devout Catholic and member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Hershey while residing in Hershey, Pa. He was a third degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1338 in Lewistown, where he maintained membership. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2022, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044, with Father William Weary officiating.

Mary Cady-Rubinstein of Reedsville, award-winning sculptor, printmaker, innovator, and a fixture in the Central Pennsylvania art community for six decades, has died. She was 94. Her work spanned a variety of mediums and techniques, including wood, stone and cast sculptures, woodcuts, etchings, lithographs and drawings. In the most recent portion of her career, she focused on a novel form that transforms woodcut boards into three-dimensional reliefs, brought to life with rich, earthy, yet striking colors. The subject matter of these “boards” is steeped in the beauty and rawness of the Central Pennsylvania land-

scape, with many images of nature and allegorical scenes reflecting the human condition. Mary was born in 1927 in Houston, Texas to Mamie and Edwin Cady and graduated from Lamar High School. She earned a B.F.A. from the University of Texas under the tutelage of Charles Umlauf, studied at the Arts Students League in New York City under the mentorship of William Zorach, and completed her formal education with an M.F.A. from the University of Iowa. She settled in Central Pennsylvania with her former husband, S. Leonard Rubinstein, with whom she had three children. She taught classes and workshops at Penn State University and The Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania. She exhibited widely throughout Pennsylvania, with retrospectives at Juniata College in 2011, and, most recently, at the Art Alliance in 2021. Her process of rigorously researching both techniques and subject matter gave depth and accuracy to her artwork. Her rendering of animal and human bodies reflects an in-depth understanding of anatomy. The armature, clothing, and postures of the figures in her work demonstrate a thorough grasp of the dynamics between humans and their environment. Her illustrations of select scenes in the works of authors such as Franz Kafka, Joseph Conrad and Jerzy Kozinski are powerful interpretations born of disci-

plined study. Mary was deeply influenced by her experiences during the Depression, enforcing a strong belief in the responsibility of society to the less privileged. A common theme in her work is finding meaning in the ordinary acts of people, whether it is a man walking on a winter night, a boy practicing archery or a gathering at a farm show. Mary also had an unwavering respect for nature and, in particular, her beloved dogs, who graced her throughout her life, and the one cat who worked his way in at the end. Mary is survived by: her children, Joshua Rubinstein and his spouse, Scott Wahlquist, Amanda Rubinstein-Stern and her spouse, Martin Stern, and Zachary Rubinstein and his spouse, Alice Julier; grandchildren, Reuben Stern and his spouse, Shanna Slank, Moriah Stern, Zoe Rubinstein and Esme Rubinstein; and great-grandchildren, Akiva Stern and Efraim Stern. A memorial service will be held for Mary at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 29, 2022 at the East Kishacoquillas Presbyterian Church, 100 Walnut St., Reedsville, PA 17084. Earlier in adult life, he was employed at Gratton’s Pharmacy in Phillipsburg where he met Joyce. Upon leaving Philipsburg, he went to work for People’s Drug Store in various locations in the Harrisburg, Camp Hill and York markets before settling in Lewistown in the early 1970s where he managed the People’s Drug Store in the Greater Lewistown Plaza for 19 years. Thereafter, he worked for Rite Aid Pharmacy as a floating pharmacist, Bilo Pharmacy in Huntingdon, and later at TLC Pharmacy in Lewistown Hospital which later became Geisinger Pharmacy, where he retired from in 2011. Chuck was known by friends, colleagues and customers to be a hard worker with a good work ethic. But, he also took time to tell some good stories, some of which could be a little ‘‘salty.’’ When Chuck took time for leisure, he loved going out to dinner with Joyce, or spending the afternoon shopping in downtown State College at shops like Jack Harper’s or the Bostonian. Stopping at The Corner Room for a sandwich, soup and coffee topped off the excursion. You could also find him lingering around the car lot at Lash Motors, kicking a few tires and talking cars with their sales team. Naturally, Chuck was a lifelong fan of the Pittsburgh

Pirates and Steelers. Even as a Pitt alum, he was a season ticket holder for Penn State basketball team for many years and attended numerous games with friends and family, and often reminisced about the years they played at Rec Hall. He also followed the Harrisburg Senators baseball team avidly and attended many games with Joyce. His favorite family vacations were to Cape May, New Jersey and to the cabin in Vermont. Chuck was an avid reader. He read roughly one book per week. His favorite genres were mysteries and presidential biographies. Some of Chuck’s best memories are of the times he and Joyce spent playing with their granddaughters. He loved them so much, and he will be missed by all who knew him. Glen H. Culbertson, 98, of Mifflintown (Arch Rock), died at 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2021, at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. He was born March 31, 1923, in Spruce Hill, Juniata County. He was raised by his grandmother Emma Culbertson. On May 23, 1992, he married Mary E. Lauver Culbertson, with whom he was blessed to share almost 22 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 2014. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Glen Culbertson Jr., of Latham, N.Y., Dr. Edward Culbertson and his wife Carmen, of Allen, Texas; a stepdaughter, Judy Reece and her husband Ned, step- granddaughter; daughter, Sheryl Saunders, all of Galion, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Joan (Lauver) Clark, of Mifflintown; four grandchildren, Jacob, Noah, Isaac and Timothy; eight great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren. Two stepgrandchildren, Kimberly (Clark) Swartz,

of Mifflintown, Troy Linn Clark, of Lewistown; five step-great-grandchildren, Chantz and Morgan Swartz, Parker, Hayden and Sophia Clark; and a very special friend Dottie Specht, of Mifflintown. Mr. Culbertson’s first wife, Neda E. Phillips and his second wife Ruth E. Miller along with a stepson Ronald H. Clark preceded him in death. Technician 5th Grade Culbertson proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during WWII, where he served in the AsiaticPacific Theater and was part of the Liberation of the Philippines. His memberships included St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Nook, Bucyrus Lodge No. 139 F&AM, A.A.S.R. Valley of Columbus, Grand Lodge of F&AM, and Aladdin Shrine Center, all of Ohio. In 1983, he retired with 35 years of service as a machine operator from Timken Roller Bearing Company, Bucyrus, Ohio. His interests in earlier years were umpiring baseball, officiating football and sports in general. A graveside funeral service was Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery, Nook, with Vicar Samuel J. Leister officiating. Harriet V. “Ginny” Davis, 79, of Daland Acres in McAlevy’s Fort, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021, at her home. Born Dec. 25, 1941, in New Castle, she was a daughter of the late F. Kenneth and Jean M. (Tindal) Filban. On Nov. 21, 1993, she married Harold J. Davis, he survives at their home. Also surviving are: her children, Craig H. Davis and wife Victoria of Pipersville; Kenneth J. Davis and wife Krista of State College; Jennifer Nicholson and husband Eric of State College; and Jean Ann (Lukas) Durchuck and husband Paul of McAlevy’s Fort; 10 grandchildren, Thomas and Lillian, Chase and Hunter, Carley, Garrett, Nicolas, and Rachel; and Lukas and Anna, as well as a sister, Nancy McCrumb and husband David of Valley View Home, Lancaster; sistersin-law, Phyllis Groninger of Carlisle; Doris Zucca and husband Louis of Vineland, N.J.; Marlene Sampsel and husband Michael of Milton; and Jean Davis of McAlevy’s Fort. liam Groninger. Ginny was a graduate of New Castle High School class of 1959. She received her associate degree from Youngstown State University and a bachelor of science degree from St. Francis University. Ginny was a certified public accountant and her places of employment included Penn Power, Ted Simpson, Barley Hearn and Company, Huntingdon Area School District where she served as their Business Manager, and she retired from CPA Associates at the age of 75. She served as a Girl Scout, a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls, AAUW, Huntingdon Area School Board, Huntingdon House Board of Directors, Huntingdon and Mifflin County Historical Societies, and Alpha Tau Gamma Honorary Accounting Fraternity

at Youngstown State University. She was also a member of State College Presbyterian Church. Ginny was an avid reader, she enjoyed gardening, which was inspired by her father, enjoyed doing embroidery, and genealogy. She traced her family tree back over 1,000 years and traced her husband’s family tree back for several centuries. She also loved helping her grandchildren with their “Flat Stanley” projects by creating elaborate stories to describe his visit to her home. In June of 2018 she fulfilled a life-long dream of visiting Ireland with her sister. They participated in a tour with a group from the Willow Valley Senior Living Community. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, 2021, at West Kishacoquillas Presbyterian

Church in Belleville with Pastor Dean Lindsey officiating. Her family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the church on Friday. A luncheon will immediately follow the service in the church social hall. Burial will take place at Burket Cemetery in Warriors Mark. Masking is optional. Born Aug. 24, 1948, in Ellenville, N.Y., he was a son of the late Edwin and Bernice Delamarter. Also preceding him in death were two sons, Toby L. Delamarter, Eric J. She and her husband previously owned Goshorn’s Tavern, Mifflin as well as operating Goshorn Auto Salvage and Towing, Mifflintown from 1968 through 2015. She was a very active member of the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW Post 5863, Mifflintown where she

cooked and cleaned. She also cleaned at the American Legion. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, decorating her house for every holiday, and especially spending time with her family. After graduating from Milton High School, she graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Ec for several years in Juniata County and then worked as a caseworker for the Juniata Co. Assistance Office. Her next job was a Home Economist with Penn State Extension and she retired in 1986 from Community Residential Rehabilitation Program, Lewistown. As a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, she had been active on church council, in WELCA and Junior choir. She also played the piano for church and Sunday school and helped maintain the church library.

Peggy was a former leader of Girl Scout Troop 313 and a member, past matron (1964-65), and organist for many years of Mifflin Chapter No.260 Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, quilting, reading, knitting, crocheting, playing the piano and working outside with her flowers. She collected cardinals, music boxes, and items by artist, Tasha Tudor. “Nene” was very proud of her grandchildren and loved them dearly. Her funeral was Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021, at Guss Funeral Home, Inc., 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown. Interment was in Westminster Presbyterian Cemetery. Raymond Elwood Guthridge, 59, of Yeagertown, passed away peacefully at 7 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital, with his wife and daughters at his bedside. Born Dec. 27, 1961, in Lewistown, he was a son of the late Donald E. “Jake” Guthridge Sr. and Sidney L. (Wilt) Guthridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard A. Guthridge Sr. Raymond is survived by: wife, Cathy J. (Wilson) Guthridge; children, Melissa Dell and husband, Joel, of Buffalo, N.Y., and Erica Fox and husband, Andy, of Lewistown; grandchildren, Evie, Jake and Ben Ray Fox; siblings, Donald E. He was a recently saved Christian. Raymond loved his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time outdoors. He also enjoyed hunting morel mushrooms and spending time at his camp in New York. Raymond had a natural talent for carving just about anything. He also built rustic furniture and enjoyed chainsaw carving. Many will cherish his whittled pieces of art. At times, he even carved at restaurants, during his hospital stays or just out and about with family and would gift people with his amazing talent. James was an original, with his signature

Howard S. Hoover, 85, of Church Street, Newton Hamilton, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2021. Born Feb. 1, 1936, in Newton Hamilton, he was the son of the late Charles B. and Martha LaRue (Meyers) Hoover. He is survived by his five children, Judy D. Ralph H. Hoover Jr., 86, of Port Royal, passed away Friday, Dec. 10, 2021, at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital. Born Jan. 21, 1935, in Windsor Park, York County, he was the only son of the late Ralph H. and Olive (Ruppert) Hoover Sr. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ann “Sue” Hoover, whom he married Oct. 27, 1956; two children, Thomas H. Hoover of Port Royal and Sally Lizardi and husband, Matthew, of Beavertown; five grandchildren, Sara Sweger and husband, Kurt, Luke Hoover, Jeremy Hoover, Brittany Hoover, and Benjamin Lizardi; and three great-grandchildren,

Jakob Sweger, Jayde Sweger, and Mila Grace Hoover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian Warren Hoover. He graduated from North York High School. Ralph worked as a screen roller at New York Wire and ran the printing press at Standard Register, both in York, but his main occupation was being a dairy farmer. He was a member of Port Royal Lutheran Church and was active in many local farming organizations. Because of his dedication to farming, he didn’t have time for a lot of hobbies, but after he retired, he and Sue enjoyed going on cruises. Elam K. Hostetler, 90, of 114 Poe St., Belleville, entered peacefully into rest at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2021. He was born on Nov. 23, 1931, in Belleville, a son of the late Noah D. and Mattie (King) Hostetler. On Oct. 26, 1960 he married Savilla (Yoder) Hostetler, who preceded him in death on July 15, 2007. He enjoyed landscaping, taking care of his orchard on the farm, gardening, cooking apple butter, and spending time with family, especially his grandchildren and singing with the Big Valley Men’s Chorus. Elam was a member of Valley View Amish Mennonite Church. He enjoyed trips to Outer Banks, and while driving truck, he traveled to every state except Alaska and Hawaii. At one

time in his life, he went to Belize on a mission trip to help build a church. He loved riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycles. But most of all, he loved his family. He loved attending his grandchildren’s activities and sporting events. He was very devoted to his entire family and treasured all the times he spent with them. John had a great sense of humor. He was a very kind and generous man, who would help anyone in need. He was much loved by many and will be very sadly missed. His memorial service will

be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at River Church with Pastor Robert Landis officiating. There will be an opportunity to visit with his family from 1 p.m. until the time of the services. IN LOVING MEMORY Thomas Daniel Hostetler Thomas Daniel Hostetler, 89, of Altamont, Tenn., passed on to his reward Friday, Nov. 26, 2021, after a gradual decline. He was born on Jan. 14, 1932, in Belleville, a son of Daniel Kory (D.K.) and Nancy Peachy Hostetler. He was a member of Cumberland Mennonite Fellowship. On Nov. 21, 1959, he married Esther Lois Bawel, of Belleville, and they were blessed with four children. Thomas spent his 1W service at Fro Brothers Home in Sturgis, Mich., and at a builders unit at Mathis, Texas. He spent his younger working years with his dad and brother in a building supply business. In his retirement years, the family moved to Altamont, Tenn., where he enjoyed a quiet life of raising chicken for Tyson for 30 years. He enjoyed making friends and sharing his faith by offering pocket calendars to anyone he met. Thomas and Esther lived in their mountain home until he reached the

Scott A. Johnson, 53, of Elizabethtown, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2021, in the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. Born in Lewistown on Aug.16, 1968, he was the son of Marlin C. and Judy A. Schmidt Johnson of McVeytown. Scott worked as the marketing and communication director for Scaringi Law. He earned his master’s degree from Sandra Day O’Connor School of Law.

Scott served as the President of the Meghan M. Johnson Scholarship Fund, and was a DJ for WHYL radio station in Carlisle. Scott loved watching and collecting movies, gardening, and collecting model trains. He was a member of the Spring Run Church of the Brethren. Broad Run, Virginia. Along with his children, Denny is survived by 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He graduated from Chief Logan High School, class of 1962. Upon graduation he enlisted in the Army and served until 1965. Denny began working at Standard Steel in Burnham as a machinist where he worked 41 years until his retirement in 2006. Denny served as post commander of American Legion Post 287 in Milroy and was a member of the VFW Post 10084 in Lake Panasoffkee, Fla. He was a member of the Lake County Eagles Aerie No. 4273 in Okahumpka, Fla., Moose Lodge in Lewistown and also a life member of the Decatur Sportsmans Club and Kreamer Sportsmans Club. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and boating in Florida. His quiet time was often spent writing poetry about things he loved: family, friends, wildlife and nature. Many of his poems were published. Denny enjoyed riding his motorcycle and fun runs for various organizations raising money for animal rescue groups and local club programs. Nov. 15, 1936, to the late Arthur and Mary (Hummel) Snook, Anna Mary was the eldest of 22 children. Anna’s passing ends a 67year marriage reunion with her surviving husband and forever soulmate, George E. Kline, of McClure. They were married on July 18, 1954. Anna Mary was the beloved mother of: son, Kenneth (Cindy) Kline, of McClure, his children, Shane Kline, (late) Brett Kline, Randy (Jamie) Kline, and Robin (Timothy) Grove; daughter, Dottie (Mike) Bollinger, of Florida, their children, Casey (Rinda) Bollinger, Jerry (Jessica) Bollinger, Vincent (Jesica) Bollinger; daughter, Barb (Carl) Hopple, of Beavertown, their children, Brian (Sonya) Brower, Branden (Karrah) Brower, Mindy (Chad) Kreamer, Kelly (Dan) Renninger, and Emily (Brian) Billett, and daughter, Connie (late, Paul) Burge, of Middleburg, their

Louise Elaine May, 94, of Pleasant Gap, passed away peacefully Friday evening, Dec. 3, 2021, at The Oaks Manor, Pleasant Gap. Louise was born at home in Reedsville, on Oct. 29, 1927, to Clarence R. (Red) Nale and Anna E. Bodtorf. She was the eldest of five children. Louise graduated from Reedsville High School. Following high school, she traveled by train to attend nursing school at Polyclinic Hospital, Harrisburg. Louise worked at a physician’s office in Milroy, and then at a hospital in Norfolk, Va.

Louise met her husband Earl May when he brought an injured person from a motor vehicle accident into her workplace. Louise was engaged at Green Gables Restaurant in Lewistown. Earl and Louise married on Oct. 28, 1948. Louise lived in Norfolk, Va., from 1948-50 while her husband served in the US Navy. Thereafter, they settled in Peru, Pa., where they raised turkeys for sale to purchase their first car. Louise enjoyed residing in the home built by her husband for over 50 years before moving to a cottage at The Oaks campus, Pleasant Gap. Louise assisted in managing Pleasant Gap Hardware and Appliance Store for over 26 years. She also hosted numerous community activities held at the family’s “Camp Earl,” on Old Greens Valley Road, in the Nittany Mountains. During the holiday season, Louise would walk up to Big Rock, collecting trailing pine along the way to make Christmas wreaths. Louise was devoted to community service. She is a past worthy matron (1979) Order of the Eastern Star, Lewistown Chapter No. 283. She is a past president of Pleasant

For fun, Louise enjoyed strolling the farm fields behind her home and walking the railroad tracks to Pleasant Gap Fish Hatchery. Louise was an active member of Logan Grange No. 109 and completed the 7th Degree, which is the highest national level. She was both a “tenter” and camper at Grange Fair, Centre Hall. Louise was an avid golfer; she had a gentle swing and was an excellent putter. She particularly enjoyed playing in the Tuesday morning ladies league at Nittany Country Club. She was a big PSU football fan and watched many games in the stands or at home. Louise was also a “snowbird;” traveling to her winter home in Deerfield Beach, Fla. In their retirement years, Louise and Earl took trips and cruises to various locations through-

Richard Gene McKelvey, 90, passed away peacefully Dec. 22, 2021, at home in Reedsville. Gene was born March 22, 1931, to Clyde Raymond and Fannie Mae (Rice) McKelvey in Altoona. He is survived by his wife, Shirley (Venerick) McKelvey; his son, Timothy and partner, Greg; his grandson, Rick, and wife, Kelly; his great-grandchildren, Gavin, Olivia and Caleb; his nephew, John, and wife, Audrey; and many other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Rick, and by his

brothers and sister. Gene graduated from Altoona High School in 1951 and worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Later, he worked as an insurance agent with American General Life Insurance Co. Gene had much to be grateful for and proud of in this life, most especially his two boys and his 70year marriage to Shirley. He served his country for eight years in the U.S. Air Force, including a tour of duty in Korea, and achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant. In addition, he and Shirley founded Boal Gap Kennels, a successful business venture of 15 years. Gene was a lifelong member of the Glen Burnie, Md., Lodge of Freemasons. He was also a member of Kish Valley Grace Brethren Church, whose fellowship he valued and appreciated. A service will take place at the convenience of the family. He was also a member of F&AM No. 203, Lewistown, and he enjoyed volunteering at Valley View Haven for a number of years. While Ralph considered himself to be a very ordinary man, he earned the respect and love of so many people whose lives he touched at church, in his workplaces, in the neighborhoods where he lived and most importantly in his family. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle. His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, 2021,

Charles M. Merrills Sr., 77, of McClure, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021, at his home. Born Nov. 20, 1944, in Huntingdon, he was a son of the late Edward Merrills Sr. and Julia (Lewis) Merrills. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by, four brothers, Charles, Philip, John, and Ted Ed Jr. He is survived by a son, Charles M. Merrills Jr. Charles was a graduate of Huntingdon High School. He was a United States Army veteran. In his earlier years, he worked for Lewistown Specialty Yarns and in the recycling department for the Lewistown Borough. He was an avid hobbyist in fish aquariums, communications technology, engineering, and gadgets. He was a marksman and enjoyed shooting and archery and going boating. No services will be held. Cheryl A. Miller, 60, of Port Royal, passed away on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2021, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Born on Aug. 29, 1961, in Lewistown, Mifflin County, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Patricia (Ruble) Williams. On May 2, 2009, she married her surviving husband, Thomas M. “Mitch” Miller, with whom she was blessed to share more than 12 years

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, William “Bill”, George, Charles “Charlie”, Howard “Ben,” and Milton “Micky” Rheem. Surviving are: husband, Donald Middlesworth; children, Linda Good and husband, James of Descanso, Calif., Steven Middlesworth and wife, Susan, of Hershey, and Nancy Dundore and husband, David, of Cleona; six grandchildren, Jason and Alyssa Good, Lauren and Ian Middlesworth, and Matt and Erin Dundore; and siblings, Albert “Abbie” Rheem and wife, Louise, of Salisbury, N.C., Richard “Dick” Rheem and wife, Sandy, of Palm Coast, Fla., and Evelyn “Sue” Pratt, of Sebring, Fla.. Milly graduated from Burnham High School. She was a member of Lewistown Presbyterian Church. She was employed as a secretary for Standard Steel Corp., worked page layout for

the Lewistown Sentinel and was a bookkeeper for Bauman and Eichenlaub, DDS. An accomplished athlete, Milly pitched for her high school softball team and was keen on competing with her brothers as a strong female. She participated in multiple sports but was especially involved in tennis. Milly was a gifted piano and organ player. She played organ for Lewistown Presbyterian Church and Highland Park Presbyterian Church. She often played piano at William Penn Center, so the residents could sing along. Her children appreciated being serenaded to sleep at night as her music filled the house with her love. For the community, Milly served leadership roles in the Parent Teacher’s Association and Cub Scouts. As an excellent quilter, Milly completed many projects for family and friends and her work is cherished

in our homes. She held two quilting classes for the community. She was proud of her students who won awards with the projects they worked on in her classes. Milly earned an advanced ham radio license and learned Morse code so she could share her husband’s hobby and show that women were just as capable. Her call sign was KE3JL. She communicated with people all over the world. Her pinochle group provided Milly with a great deal of fun and friendship. They played in many local venues and shared laughs and melds together. Gardening was an avid interest for Milly. She was outside in her garden more than she was inside. The Mifflin County Library Book Club was one of Milly’s joys. She read an average of two books each week and passed that love of reading on to her children

and grandchildren. Milly was a writer and storyteller. She regaled the family with tales she created and wrote a book she titled “Just A Girl,” which was placed in Mifflin County Library. Her writing recounts her experiences growing up in the local area. A private memorial service will be held at Lewistown Presbyterian Church for the family officiated by Rev. Sarah Sedgwick. The service is available online via YouTube (Lewistown Presbyterian Church) and Zoom for friends and family members who are out of town. Mrs. Miller was employed as a claims processor with more than 22 years of service and retired from United Concordia in Harrisburg. Cheryl enjoyed camping, the beach, shopping, yardsaling, and going on cruises; however, she cherished the time spent with her family, especially her children and grandchildren the most. Born Aug. 24, 1924 in Port Trevorton, Snyder County she was the daughter of Margaret (Heiser) and Ralph Beaver. On Aug. 21, 1948 she married her late husband, Rudolph Theodore Mitchell with whom she was blessed to share more than 30 years of marriage before he preceded her in death on Oct. 6, 1978. Margaret M. (Baker) Nale

Margaret M. (Baker) Nale, passed away on Nov. 30, 2021 after a short illness. The daughter of Dorsey and Alma Baker, she was born in McClure, on Jan. 16, 1934. She was the youngest of five children. Margaret, who preferred to be called ‘Peg,’ grew up in Snyder County; where she graduated from Snyder County High School and later married William Russell Nale, a Lewistown native in July of 1953. They

were married for 63 years. He preceded her in death in 2016. While living in Lewistown, Peg was a homemaker and raised two daughters. She worked for several years as an admissions clerk at the local hospital. Peg was an avid bowler, playing weekly for many years with a women’s team of good friends. She was also a golfer, which was a contributing factor to the couple’s decision to relocate to the Sandhill’s in 1981. Peg also loved playing games, especially card games, enjoying pinochle and especially bridge with her close friends in several bridge clubs. Peg was predeceased by

her parents Dorsie and Alma (Narehood) Baker; Her four siblings, Robert Baker, Donald ‘Jiggs’ Baker, Theodore ‘Ted’ Baker, Betty ‘Betts’ (Baker) Wetzel, and Peg’s husband William ‘Bill’ Nale. He eventually moved to Mount Union, where he served as teacher and head football coach, finishing his career as a high school principal. Upon moving back to Cookeville, he worked 10 more years in teaching, coaching, and administration at Bledsoe County Middle School in Pikeville, Tenn. He is survived by his wife

Helen Louise Salvatore, 88, of Lewistown, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 9, 2021 at Locust Grove Retirement Village in Mifflin. Born Oct. 21, 1933 in Clearfield, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sarah (Dipiazzo) Macaluso. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters Turi (Charles) Davis, Mary (Frank) Vezza, and Rose (Charles) Messina. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Richard E. Salvatore on July 21, 2019 whom she married Sept. 7, 1957 in St. Francis Catholic Church in Clearfield. Helen is survived by her children, Scott Salvatore, of West Chester, Dean Salvatore and wife Sherry, of Freeburg, Ill., and Mark Salvatore and wife Suzanne, of Lewistown. She is also survived by her grandchildren Holly Salvatore and companion Stu Buck, Abby (Brett) Prather, Josh (Lauren) Hassinger, Krystan Hassinger, Kody (Sierra) Hassinger, Dawson Salvatore, Benjamin (Ashley) Favre and Jesse Favre, and great-grandchildren, Wyatt, Delaney, and Clayton Hassinger, Ryker and Maylee Hassinger, and Holden and Declan Favre. Helen graduated from

Clearfield High School in 1951 and the Altoona Hospital School of Nursing in 1954 as a registered nurse. Early in her career she worked at various nursing positions in Philadelphia while her husband attended pharmacy school. After settling in Lewistown with her husband she worked in the family-owned business (Lewistown Pharmacy) as a mastectomy technician and bookkeeper for 46 years, retiring in 2018. She was a member of the Altoona Hospital Alumni Association, the PA Nurses Association, and she was a faithful member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church for over 60 years. In her free time, she enjoyed traveling with her husband, baking, cooking, crocheting, needlepoint, doing crossword puzzles, and enjoying conversations with nieces, nephews and friends. After raising her children, she volunteered at Red Cross bloodmobiles for several years. She was also a 39-year breast cancer survivor and was the proud mother of three Eagle Scouts. A funeral mass in loving memory of Helen was Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021 at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 N Dorcas St., Lewistown, PA 17044 with Father William Weary to officiate. one great-great-granddaughter. He is also survived by his sisters, Nancy A. Kinsinger of Belleville, and Fannie B. Fry of Lititz. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mattie Spicher and Elsie Yoder Gerber; and one brother, Jacob Sharp. Yonie was a dairy farmer for a number of years, then went to work at KaVee Dairy. He started working at New Holland in 1951 and stayed there for 39 years, working in the foundry first, then in plant service. He enjoyed hauling his Amish friends, doing word

searches and watching TV. He was a member of Allensville Fire Co., Allensville Fire Police, and Stone Valley Bible Church in McAlevy’s Fort. His funeral service were. On Aug. 16, 1952, Charles married his sweet and precious bride, Helen (Graham) Sheaffer. They shared more than 69 years of a beautiful marriage. At a young age, Charles served in the United States Army from Oct. 26, 1953, until his honorable discharge on Oct. 25, 1955. Charles was employed at Wood-Mode Cabinetry in Kreamer from where he retired after 43 years of service. He was also a pastor at Tuscarora Church of the Brethren and Farmers Grove Church of the Brethren for more than 30 years. He was a proud golden member of the Church of the

Brethren. Charles enjoyed watching Phillies baseball and Eagles football, as well as playing baseball in his younger days. He also enjoyed hunting rabbits and deer, woodworking, landscaping and yard work. He was very meticulous and particular with his lawn care. His greatest enjoyment in life was loving his children, his grandson, and his greatgrandchildren. Charles was the last of his immediate family. Charles is survived by his loving wife, Helen; two daughters Sharon Leonard and her husband David Rapp of Mount Pleasant Mills, and Susan K. Hoffman of Selinsgrove; a grandson, Christopher M. Robert E. “Wes” Shelley, 86, of Thompsontown, passed away after a long and courageous battle with cancer at 11:48 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2021, at his residence surrounded by his family. Born on Aug. 23, 1935, in Monroe Township, Juniata County, he is a son of the late North and Myrtle (Strausser) Shelley. On Dec. 18, 1954, he married his surviving wife, Barbara J. (Landis) Shelley with whom he was blessed to share almost 67 years of marriage. In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his children, Heidi Rapp and her husband Ronald of East Salem, Robert Shelley and his wife Susan, Andrew Shelley, and Brian Shelley, all of Thompsontown; one daughter-in-law, Michelle D. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Michael E. “Mike” Shelley; an infant daughter, Melanie Shelley; siblings, William “Bill” Shelley, Elizabeth “Betty” Miller, Lois Sausser, and Nevin Shelley; and one stepgreat-grandson, Garrett Kauffman. Mr. Shelley was a 1954 graduate of East Juniata High School in Cocolamus and was a member and attended Otterbein United Methodist Church in East Salem where he was a former trustee and former superintendent of Sunday school. Wes was employed as a plumber and an electrician for most of his working career, first working for Tex Wirt and then was employed and retired at Manbeck Construction Company in Mifflintown. His memberships also included being a founding member of Camp Coble and serving as a former president of East Salem Cemetery Association. He loved to hunt, fish, and watch sports, especially soccer. All services were private with interment taking place at East Salem Cemetery. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Donald E. Shoemaker, who passed on Oct. 6, 2020; and a sister, Martha Moist. He was preceded in death by six sisters, Theresa Short, infant, of Lewistown, Jane (Short) Zavacky, of Lewistown, Mary (Short) Leib, of Carrolltown, Ellen (Short) Wilson, of Lewistown, Elizabeth (Short) Gahagen, of Lewistown, and two brothers, John Short, of Lewistown and Franklin Short, of Hershey. Joe is survived by his children, Joseph E. Short and wife Christina, of Lewistown, and Joanne Short, who was the light of his life and his constant sidekick. Also surviving are three grandsons and four great-grandchildren, Joseph M. Short and wife Kelsey, and their children, Joseph A. Short and Lillian Short. Michael E. Short and wife Olivia, and their children Savannah Short and Everett Short, and Matthew J. Short. Joe graduated from Derry Township High School in 1950. He was drafted in 1951 into the Korean War and was

honorably discharged in 1953 at the rank of Sergeant. Early in life, he worked for the Lewistown Candy Company, L&M Tobacco, and Behr Manning Abrasion. He retired from Standard Steel in 1992 after 28 years. During his life, he owned many businesses in both Mifflin and Juniata Counties. He built and ran R&S Cream Stop in McAlisterville in the early 1960s. In the 1970s, Joe and Maxine owned and ran the City Line Motel in Lewistown and Short’s Hillside on Valley Street, which had also been owned and operated by several of his brothers and sisters over the years. In the 1980s, he owned the Dutch Cellar Bar in Lewistown. After retirement, Joe spent his days being the best grandfather he could be to Joey, Mike, and Matt. He was involved with the boys every day and was happy to see their milestones and have the time to do things he wanted to do with them. Him and all the boys were avid Notre Dame fans. College football season was his

favorite time of the year. In 2013, they all attended the Notre Dame vs. Pitt game and had a great weekend. He also enjoyed spending time at hunting camp with them and his nephew, John. He was blessed to see the birth of four great-grandchildren and have time with them as well. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church, 106 N. Dorcas St., Lewistown, with Father Peter Rettig to officiate. There will be a viewing held at the church from 10 a.m. until time of service. She had eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Virginia was born Feb. 13, 1925, to the late Thomas M. and Ruth Snyder McKee. She was one of six children. of Florida, Gordon S. McKee and Lynn M. McKee both of Lewistown. She is survived by her sister Winifred O’ Halloran and husband James of Willow Street, Pa., and brother Stanley E. McKee and wife Evelyn of McVeytown. With the exception of a few years, she lived her life on the family farm in Ferguson Valley, which was built for her grandfather in the mid-1800s and has been continuously occupied by family members since that time. Virginia was an avid gardener who loved to share what she grew. She would freeze and can vegetables and her pickles were everyone’s favorite. She was a wonderful baker and many

people were the recipients of her delicious baked items and homemade jam. She was a faithful member of Ellen Chapel Church and for many years mailed church literature and Sunday bulletins to those who could no longer attend, writing a personal note to help brighten their day. A celebration of her life will be held in spring of 2022, and interment will be private. She will be forever loved and remembered, and the family appreciates your support during this difficult time. Marcy was a member of Sayre Christian Church and played the organ. Her hobbies included gardening, teaching piano lessons, insect collecting, reading, snuggling with her kitties and knitting. Marcy is predeceased by her parents and her brother Dennis Lee. Marcy is survived by her husband James, her children Sara (Charles Donaghy) and David (Keeley Lowell); her granddaughter Kaylea Donaghy, her brother Albert B. Jodie L. Swailes, 54, of Mifflintown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2021, at Evangelical Hospital, Lewisburg. Born Jan. 2, 1967, in

Christian “C.G.” and Elizabeth (Stoltzfus) Stoltzfus. He was the loving husband of Mary (Myer) Stoltzfus, with whom he celebrated 64 years of marriage, before her death on Dec. 24, 2020. He is survived by: three sons, Kenneth (Bonnie), Belleville; Kevin (Beverly), Belleville; Kirt (Karen), Alto, Mich.; and daughter, Karen (David) Mast, Akron,; 15 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by: two grandsons, Craig Stoltzfus and Daniel Mast. He sought to faithfully serve the Lord throughout his varied involvements, employments and ministries. He served two years in 1-W service at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a graduate of EMC, Harrisonburg, Va., and served in Pastoral Ministries at Sandy Hill Mennonite Church, Coatesville, and Maple Grove

Mennonite Church, Belleville. Later, he was employed as director of facilities and grounds at AMBS, Elkhart, Ind. During the intervening years, he was an employee of W.S. Horst, later C.M.C. Plumbing and Heating, Gap, for a total of more than 22 years. Paul was gifted in many trades. He and his wife, Mary, volunteered many years with Habitat for Humanity and Mennonite Disaster Service on the southern tier during the winter. Multiple summers were spent in Michigan and Minnesota with his sons and with families doing construction and farm chores. His favorite hobby was restoration (i.e., furniture, machinery, vehicles, and relationships). Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon, April 16, 2022, at Salisbury Township Community Park, Pavilion 2. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.

She spent a lot of time with her Pomeranian dog, Brandy, and loved her family dearly, especially her grandsons. She was a licensed practical nurse for over 30 years having worked at Lewistown Hospital and various other nursing homes. She attended the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Mifflintown where she loved working with children and teaching Bible School and Sunday School, however, she cherished all church activities in general. Carol loved all of her generations of nieces, nephews and cousins. They all were very special to her.

moved to West Virginia for a short time then settled in Herrin, Ill. Donnie went to Herrin High School where he enjoyed athletics and classes in woodworking. After high school, Donnie served honorably in the United States Navy, stationed mostly in Japan from 1952-56. After completing his military service in May 1956, Donnie went to work for the NSA in Arlington, Va., then the agency moved him to Fort George Meade in Maryland where he served as watch chief for a total of 36 years. Donnie moved to McVeytown, to his riverfront home for retirement. It is here where Donnie enjoyed playing his guitar and having his friends over for music jams and gatherings. Growing up in the country, Donnie loved playing with his dogs. Donnie enjoyed singing and playing music from his heart for his church. Donnie and his wife of 62 years, Ruby Martena

(Marti) were both members of Pine Glen Church of the Brethren. He is survived by his loving family; daughter, Susan Davis and son-inlaw Howard Davis of Port Charlotte and many loving nieces and nephews, Donnie will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by: his loving wife, Ruby (Marti); daughter, Karen Joanne; parents, Herman and Ruby Yantz; brothers, Virgil and Dale; sisters, Virginia Yantz Sanders, Betty Yantz Rosenberger, Goldena Yantz Hudson, and Diane Yantz Thompson. Matthew 25:21, “His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant, a life well lived...’” Private inurnment will be held at Pine Glenn Cemetery at a later date. David M. Yetter

David M. Yetter, 92, of Pine Crest Drive, McClure, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2021 at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. He was born on May 1, 1929 in Bannerville, a son of the late William and Anna (Baker) Yetter. He was married to Doris (Erb) Yetter who preceded him in death in 2015. David attended Kricks School House. He served in the Army during the Korean War where he was stationed in Germany. David had previously worked at Beaver’s Bakery, Virco in California, and later after returning to Pennsylvania he was employed at the Viscose and AMP. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, fishing, woodworking and making latch hook rugs. Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl A. and Donald Fultz and Cindy L. and George Richmond; three grandchildren, Jason and companion Bonnie, Heather and companion Tim and Jenel and companion Chris; three great-grandchildren, Emma, Christopher and Shawn and companion Ashley; two great-great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Evelyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death in addition to his wife by this three brothers, William, Joseph and John Yetter. Graveside service with military honors by the Middle West Veterans were Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the Black Oak Ridge Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Pheasant Funeral Home, 130 S. Zechman St., Beavertown.

Annie Jane Yoder, was born and died on Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2021, at her home on 106 S. Dryhouse Road, Belleville. She’s the daughter of Benjamin S. and Lomie A. (Yoder) Yoder, and the little sister of Rudy Lee Yoder. Annie is also survived by her maternal grandparents, Mosie and Annie Yoder of Belleville and her paternal grandparents, Benjamin and Annie Yoder of Belleville, and a paternal great-grandmother, Rachel E. Swarey, of Belleville. She was of the Old Order Amish church. Services were Dec. 29 at Kish Creek Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Henderson Funeral Home, Belleville, Pa.

Mabel M. Zechman

Mabel M. Zechman, 97, of Middleburg, passed away Thursday, Dec. 16, 2021, at Valley View Haven in Belleville. She was born March 8, 1924, in Decatur Township, Mifflin County, a daughter of the late Lewis D. and Carrie N. (Snook) Lash. On March 31, 1940, she married Gilbert R. Zechman who preceded her in death on Nov. 14, 2001. Mabel had been employed at Westinghouse in Sunbury, Harrisburg Steel, the Middleburg Silk Mill, and assisted her husband for 25 years in the operation of Zechman Well Drilling. She was a member of

Trinity United Methodist Church, Middleburg, and the mission society of the church. She also served as treasurer for many years for the Haiti Gospel Mission. Mabel enjoyed golfing, crocheting, was an accomplished quilter, and will be remembered for her feisty spirit. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy M. Page of Middleburg; three grandchildren and their spouses, Jamie (Dennis) Stahl, Erica (Greg) Hood, and Dwayne (Hattie) Page; eight great-grandchildren, Leah (John) Dawes, Denya (Lance) Burris, Brendan Hood, Brady Hood, Kaleisha (Dakota) Wright, Colten (Morgan) Page, Dustin (Jennifer) Stahl, Shanen (Jennifer) Stahl; eight great-grandchildren,

Adelyn and Noah Dawes, Lex and Kai Burris, Lauren, Grace, Emma, Haley, and Robbie Stahl; and one sister, Donna Wagner. She was preceded in death by seven siblings, Lewis, Leo, Dalton Jr., and Guy Lash, Marian Bowersox, Gay Simonetti, and Shirley Lash. Services were Tuesday, Dec. 21, at Trinity United Methodist Church, Middleburg. Burial will be in Glendale Cemetery, Middleburg.
