Cars a memory and more for those who drove them My daddy said, “Son, you’re going to drive me to drinkin’ if you don’t stop driving that Hot Rod Lincoln.”
Commander Cody and his Lost Planet Airmen made famous the 1955 tune about a lead-foot youth in a classic car. It represents, in many ways, the American passion for the automobile and the role it has played in our lives. We asked readers to tell us about their favorite car, and not surpringly, a lot of them come from the muscle car era, when we replaced the garish fins that defined American cars with sleek lines and big engines made for speed.

straits in the 1970s after being dismissed by Ford. I told you as this project began about my favorite car, the 1978 Volkswagon Rabbit. Most of the cars I’ve owned over the years have hardly been sporty and stylish — I’ve tended for fuel-efficient and reliable, coming of age in the era when a gallon of gasoline went from less than 30 cents to more than a dollar — and my “current favorite,” a 2014 Toyota Prius (the station wagon model, no fake wood panels though) has made the daily drive to and from Lewistown a relaxing, not to mention affordable. But if I ever have the wherewithal to do it, I will have one of the most beauti-
ful cars of the 1970s — also famous in song — Pontiac’s “The Judge.” Considered the low end of the GTO (Grand Tourismo Omologato, an Italian phrase meaning the car is certified to race in the Grand Tourer class), it was named by none other than John DeLorean and sung about by Paul Revere and the Raiders, part of the British Invasion. By the way, I can’t help but encourage you to take a look at two of the songs mentioned above: Commander Cody’s Hot Rod Lincoln (https://bit.ly/3x5bYw3), and The Judge by Paul Revere (https://bit. ly/3uX54Yv). I REMEMBER ...
Surprising history behind ‘Hoenstine’s GTO’ My name is Bill Stuck and I am a classic car fanatic. I probably own too many cars but a real fanatic knows that cannot be true. This all starts in the summer of 1964. I had just recently earned my driver’s license. Not a junior license or a temporary license, but an honest to goodness fullfledged license. My Dad had bought me a $60 rustfree PA car. This means you bought the car and the rust was free. Believe me I got a lot of free stuff. With this set of wheels. I could get to my part-time job without bothering him. Wow! freedom the open road. Go when and where I want if the car did not break down and the gas held out. This particular Saturday night it was off to Kish Park for the splash hop. That was a dance and swim at the pool, which is now the Dog Park. I was not

As I was talking with the guys, a friend tapped me on the shoulders and said: Did you see Hoenstine’s GTO? I said, “What is a GTO?” He said it is a new car Pontiac just brought out: “It is really KOOL, you got to go see it.” So I exited the pool and found myself walking toward a bright set of headlights that blocked seeing the car itself. As I approached the crowd, I will always remember the sound of the rumble that came from the gorgeous white car as it sat

there idling. There was no one in it so I did not know which person was Hoenstine. All I knew was, he owned it, I did not. Weeks went by, years went by, cars disappear. Early on I made a list of cars I wanted to restore and keep. I could never afford nice cars but I can fix about anything I set my mind too. I’ve built antique cars, street rods, muscle cars, classic Chevies, stuff so bad no one else wanted to mess with. Along the way I acquired a white ’64 GTO parts car. I also have a red 64 GTO convertible. One day a neighbor said, “I have a friend who used to own a 64 GTO. Could I Hoenstine’s GTO, looking as good as it did nearly 60 years ago. bring him up to see yours? His name is Bill Hoenstine.” I said sure, and I might own his old car. He said, “No, his wasn’t a convertible.” See GTO / Page 5

GTO Continued from Page 4
I said, “Believe me I know that.” On the day Bill came to visit we took my convertible for a ride. Afterward I showed him the white parts car. He was drawn to it but he had no way of identifying it as his. All paperwork had long since disappeared. I told Bill of the night years ago and how envious of him I was. I said, “You had the car, you played in a band, you had girls and money for gas. You had everything the rest of us guys dreamed of”. The parts car was bad,
fenders rusted and dented, doors kicked in and most of the bottom missing, quarters rotted and creased. Let us say every panel and floor pan was bad. Even the dash was rusted through. The engine was wrong and frozen. The transmission was wrong and the frame was rusted off behind the back wheels. When removing the grill, I came upon two little amber lights in front of the radiator. I called Bill and asked if he knew anything about the lights. He said, “ I was a junior fireman and I put two extra lights in the grill on a four-way flasher switch.” I had my dream car even though it looked like a night-
mare. I decided I wanted those 10 minutes from so long ago back. I also knew if I replaced every bad panel and part, it would not be the actual car I saw. I set out to repair and weld in only what was necessary. This way it was as much of the original GTO as I could save. I did a body off rotisserie restoration. The frame was repaired, rebuilt and repainted. A correct engine was found in Texas and rebuilt. All other running gear was overhauled. Every seal, gasket and rubber hose were replaced. I installed a new headliner, carpet and entire upholstery. With the help See GTO / Page 6 Hoenstine’s GTO when Stuck used it as a parts source.

Father’s Roadmaster – full of gas, memories My favorite car growing up in the ’40s was a new Buick Roadmaster convertible. It was my dad’s but I could almost always have it — and he kept it full of gas! My friends and I marveled at this “Beauty.” You could press buttons and the top went up and down, the seat went back and forth and the windows went up and down. The gears were on the steering column and it had Dynaflow (whatever that is). My friends and I lived in Derry Township and attended Derry Township High School in Yeagertown (class of ’48). It was pretty far away. I was the last school bus stop on US 522 North. We were all in activities, so I always picked up my friends.
Young Nancy Bogar and her dad, with his thennew Buick Roadmaster.
We also went to state parks — Greenwood, Poe Paddy, etc. Sometimes we just went to Lewistown, parked at the curb and watched the people go by. We were good kids. We didn’t drink or smoke and the only drugs we knew were what the doctor gave us when we were sick. I never had an accident or a traffic ticket. But we sure had fun in the Buick. By the way, I never owned a car until my husband passed away in 2012 and our little PT Cruiser was transferred to my name at age 82. After 66 years of driving I finally owned a car — and I had to buy my own gas! Nancy Bogar McClure

Jamie grew up in Port Royal and graduated from Juniata High school in 1988. After enlisting in the Pennsylvania Army national guard for 6 years as a combat medic He entered the auto industry in 1994 as a sales professional for the local Jeep/ Eagle dealer Mountain Country Motors working for John and Joan Penland. Being in this industry for so long we have definitely seen it change dramatically over the years but we feel that the most consistent aspect is do it the right way, treat people the way you would want to be treated and just be yourself. Since we opened EZ Auto in 2012 and working for ourselves it has brought new challenges and a new found respect for people that we have previously worked for, but we love what we do . We still get excited about cars that we buy and we still get excited when we find the right car for the right customer. EZ Auto currently has 5 full time, 4 part time employees, numerous sublets and business partners that we are very proud of that we can, due to the number of cars we put into the local area every year help support and trickle down funds that end up helping our community. Jamie resides in Reedsville with his wife Dawn and daughter Maggie. Husky grew up in Belltown and graduated from Chief Logan in 1987 and entered into the auto industry in 1989 working at Lake Chevy for Bill Lake. Husky’s pap Bill Hummel had Hummels used cars in Belltown . He currently resides in Belltown with his wife Sue and daughter Maddie. Husky and Jamie being around the same age and being born and bred in Mifflin and Juniata county, growing up hunting and fishing, there just always seemed to be “then” and” now” an automobile involved in that and our fascination with automobiles at very young ages and has continued for a lifetime. EZ Auto has been open since 2012 and prides themselves on quality, diverse, late model, low mileage, affordable cars, trucks and suvs. With available financing and top dollar for trades, we welcome your local business and hope for the opportunity to earn your business.

I REMEMBER ...
Memories of first-time ‘driving’ at an early age I started driving at the age 4. I looked much older for my age. My first car was a 1950 station wagon convertible pedal car bought as a Christmas gift by my grandmother Bertha (Swanger) Speece. It was not my favorite ride but, even though it would not smoke the tires, I never wrecked or got a ticket! The very first car I drove at 15 — one that weighed more than myself — was a 1957 Chevy Bel-Air, twodoor hard top, two-tone peach with a white top. Dad left me behind the wheel on the Barrville Road. Boy what a special car for my first driving experience. I’ll bet a father now knowing 61 years later what a collectible that ’57 would become would not have done that! In 1963, now 17 years old, my first car was a 1956 Chevy Bel-Air, two-door coupe, two-tone green, six-cylinder automatic (another very collectible — I wish I knew it then). I payed $150 for it from money saved through school banking. After Dad overhauled it about three times he sold it (shame on you, dad). The second favorite ride was my father’s work vehicle, a 1955 Ford Sedan Delivery, a six cylinder, a three on the tree! It was where I learned to speed shift and burn rubber! I had to watch what I did with it even thought I would like to have taken it to the drag strip. Dad had it repainted blue with white panels with “Elmo Gonsar, house wiring and appliance repair” and with our home phone number on it! I would have bet money before I would get to the end of the quarter mile
someone would have called home and squealed on me! One time when dad and mom were not home I decided to teach two girls how to drive a straight stick. Only one of the two got a very quick lesson! We were only a few hundred yards from the house when who comes by but, my parents. When Dad’s second job got slow and he put second gear in several times, she blew up around Phillipsburg and it put a hole through the engine your could put your arm through. I was very good at ending the life of my rides. My third favorite ride was my “high school sweetheart” — my parents’ beautiful 1963 1/2 Ford Galaxy XL 500. Red with a white vinyl fast back top. Red bucket seats with an automatic on the floor and with a very quick 390 motor and you could really smoke those tires. I don’t know why they sold her. There was nothing wrong with it other than bald tires! Maybe it was to save their only son’s life, after all I honed my driving skills on the bumper cars at Kish Park. All in all, my first choice of rides was difficult but it would have to be the “Elmo Young Gary Gonsar, out for a spin in his first ride. Gonsar” ’55 Ford wagon!

Half-car drive ends with a police stop The year was 1952. My first car, or should I say my first half car — at the age of 14 my friend Gene Fultz, who was 16, and I pooled all of our worldly belongings together and bought a 1937 Chevy. What a car that was. I would love to have that car today. Being half owner of the car I got to drive it when ever possible. Until one day I was stopped by the Pennsylvania State Police, asking for my drivers license. I’m still just 14. The officer did not arrest me but told me to go home and tell my parents. He also told Gene to drive the car. After thinking it over I decided to do what the offi-

I REMEMBER ... This is a 1995 Chevy Silverado step side that was my dad’s — that’s why it’s so special to me as he passed away in 2018. He took really good care of it and I’m trying to continue the tradition so eventually it will get handed down to my son. It doesn’t get driven much — it still has under 100,000 miles — but I like taking it to shows and cruise ins with two 8-by-10 pictures of my dad sitting under the hood, which usually strikes up conversation because a lot of people knew him as being a Snedeker Oil delivery driver for many years. I REMEMBER ...
Old English sports cars stir fond memories The first car I ever purchased on my own was a green 1962 MGA for $600 in 1970. At the time my father was in the loan business on Valley Street. I asked him for a loan and he said I should establish credit somewhere other than his business. He took me to see “Fred,” the loan manager at First National Bank. The bank is no longer there. It was the one with the big clock out front on Market Street. After handshakes there was some chit chat before we got down to the business at hand. I could tell there was a mutual respect between these lenders. Back in those days there
were no credit cards or ATM cards except for gasoline station credit cards. The bank lent money for large purchases and small loan companies acted like credit card companies and lent money for small purchases, like washers and dryers all the way down to a $5 loan. Along with these small loans came high interest rates, just like credit cards. Fred quoted Dad a 6% loan for 24 months. Dad objected and the dickering began. In a short minute I was told to wait outside. Dad came out a few minutes later and said I would receive the loan at 4% for 24 months. To this day I would like to know what
was said after I left. Anyway, I know I saved 2% that translated to more money in my pocket. In those days car insurance was not required and PA state inspections were twice a year. Anyway back to cars. I kept the green MGA until I went in the service and was married. When I came out of the service I bought another ’62 MGA as a hobby car from my father-inlaw that was red and kept it for 33 years. Over the years I did everything to that car, new paint, tires, chrome wire wheels, new leather interior, rebuilt the engine, wood dashboard and Moto-lita steering wheel. I sold it to my neighbor
and still get to see it occasionally. I found out some years later that the green MGA was wrapped around a tree in the Sunbury area in the mid 1970s. I really liked those old English cars and have fond memories of fall afternoon drives along winding valley roads. In 33 years the red one was only in the rain three times and never in snow. One year it came in third place at the Country Memories Day car show. The love affair with the MGA ended when I purchased a Nissan 350 Z as a second hobby car. You would think I would have been more loyal to the MGA because of our long
history. In comparison they were both stylish, red, twoseat convertible roadsters. That is where the similarities ended. When it came to appointments, performance, comfort and power there was no comparison. I kept both cars for a year then decided to sell the MGA.
I just didn’t pay attention to it anymore. I let the MGA slip away like an old sweater that had lost its style, shape and usefulness. I always felt bad about that. It was a great car that served me well.

This 1963 Volkswagen Type 2 (Double Cab Pick-Up) was the family car for Daniel Mosemann’s family back in the late 1960s and into the early ’70s — from family outings to cross-country moves during his dad’s time in the Navy. ‘And everybody knew us when we drove by — hard to miss the purple and yellow paint scheme!’

Rick Watts, formerly of Lewistown and now of Denver, Pa., got his 1965 Mustang (below) when he was a senior at Lewistown Granville High School and rebuilt it to street race in the days of bypass racing before Beaver Springs Dragway opened. He must love Mustangs — he’s seen above with his 1967 Mustang, and above is his 2004 Mustang GT.

I REMEMBER ...
For this family, ‘pony cars’ are a tradition
Editor’s note: Sentinel publisher Ruth Eddy surprised a few of us in the newsroom with this story. Who knew she liked muscle cars?
My current car is a Toyota Camry. It is the sport model, but Camrys are known to be reliable family cars. I have had a number of cars that I really liked and they are all different, but Ford Mustangs are definitely one of my favorites. My brother Paul and I grew up around Mustangs. When we were in grade school, our parents had a red 1965 or 1966 Mustang. For fun, my mother would take us on a back road and she would drive over a bump in the road. It felt a little bit like riding a roller coaster. We would laugh and ask her to go over the bump again. We loved going for rides in that car. Fast forward a few years ... the red Mustang was gone, but we had a white, 1969 Mach 1 Mustang with red racing stripes. It was a three speed. I learned how to drive a stick shift and enjoyed cruising through town with my friends in that car. Paul is only 18 months younger than I am. When he got his driver’s license, the Mach 1 was at the center of the only argument I remember having with him. Suddenly, he thought it would be a good idea for him to drive the Mach 1! What was he thinking?! Soon after Paul got his driver’s license, I went off to college and Paul bought a white 1976 Cobra Mustang. It had blue racing stripes. It is the car on the right in the photo. When I graduated from college, my dad came to
help to move me out of my apartment. When I saw that he was driving my brother’s car, I asked him how he talked Paul into letting him drive his car. My dad told me that it wasn’t Paul’s car, it was mine. I couldn’t believe it — I was so excited. I think the attached photo is the only photo we ever took of the two cars together. I sold my Mustang the year before I got married. My son cringed when I told him that I sold it for $600. I used that money as a down payment on another car. At the time, I thought it was a good deal. Many years later, my son Matt was nearly 16 and he decided he wanted a Mustang. He started with a plain white car and modified it to add navy stripes, dual exhaust and many other features. Matt had never seen my car or his uncle’s until
Matching Mustangs owned by Sentinel publisher Ruth Eddy and her brother Paul, in 1984. Below, Ruth’s son Matt chose his without knowing about his mom’s past.
several years later when I found the lone photo of the two Mustangs. I know Matt really enjoys his Mustang. I guess it is in his blood.

Self-maintaining your car one by one with a spark plug socket, wrench or ratchet. ¯ Change the oil and oil filter. Because changing the oil in a vehicle requires jacking up the car or truck and getting a little dirty, some people prefer to leave it to an oil change center. However, at an estimated cost of $20 versus nearly double or more what you’ll spend elsewhere, it can save money to do it yourself. Never change the oil while the engine is hot. And remember to lubricate the rubber gasket on the new oil filter and allocate enough oil to fill the filter with about 2/3 of new oil in addition to what is put in the engine.
¯ Replace headlight bulbs. Replacing headlight bulbs is a fairly easy project and will only take around 10 minutes to do after you purchase the right bulbs for your vehicle. Each vehicle is different, but many bulbs are housed inside of a bulb holder, which is shaped like a trapezoid with three wires coming out of it, advises U.S. News & World Report. Remove the old bulb and put in the new. Plug the wires back in and test to see if the headlight works. The above automotive tasks are just some that people can try themselves to save time and money.

Performing routine vehicle maintenance tasks on one’s own is an ideal way to reduce automotive expenditures. The following are several vehicle maintenance jobs skilled DIYers may be able to handle on their own. ¯ Replace the air filter. An air filter should be changed annually or more frequently if you reside in a dry, dusty climate. A clogged filter can stress the vehicle’s air conditioning system and reduce heat capacity in the winter. Check the location of the air filter in the owner’s manual; pay attention to how it is placed before removing. Then replace it with a clean filter that can be purchased for around $15. ¯ Replace the wiper blades. When wiper blades are worn out, visibility in rainy or snowy weather is reduced. Choose a quality wiper blade, as they usually are made with high-quality rubber, clean better and have more UV protection than manufacturer-provided blades. Follow the installation instructions on the package, and be sure to refer to the particular manufacturer’s buying guide to get the right size for your make and model of vehicle. ¯ Replace spark plugs. The money management site Money Crashers says spark plugs need to be replaced after around 30,000 miles or as indicated by your owner’s manual. Vehicles will have four, six or eight plugs, depending on how many cylinders the car has. The plugs need to be changed in a certain order, so only remove the first wire and spark plug. Parts, features for classic cars that are now obsolete One of the challenges automotive hobbyists and restorers often face is the constant need to track down parts. The following are some of the components you likely won’t find rolling off of the assembly line these days — and may only find in a junk yard if you need one for your classic car: ¯ Carburetor — Vehicles previously used a carburetor, which was a bulky device that sat on top of the engine. Classic cars have carburetors, but modern ones do not. Most car manufacturers stopped using carburetors in the 1980s because fuel injector systems proved to be more efficient and improved fuel economy. Carburetors created an air-fuel mixture needed for engine combustion. Very often carburetors were the culprits in poor engine performance because they weren’t creating the right air and fuel mixture. Also, jets on the carburetor could easily become clogged. ¯ Generator — Modern automobiles no longer use a generator, which is a device used to produce electricity through the rotation of fine wires in a magnetic field. Cars today use alternators. Instead of an armature rotating inside a stationary magnetic field as with a generator, an alternator has a magnetic field that rotates around a stationary armature, according to the online resource Electrical Technology. Alternators are more efficient because they can produce more power, even charging a car battery, at low engine speeds and idling. ¯ Audible turn signals — Turn signals, also called blinkers, typically have a clicking sound to alert the driver that the signal is
still engaged and needs to be switched off after a turn. However, many modern cars are phasing out audible turn signals. ¯ Car keys — Newer vehicles do not have stamped metal keys, which have been replaced by electronic fobs. When the fob is near to the vehicle, doors automatically unlock. The fob is used in combination with a push-button ignition, making a key start obsolete. Some cars also use “chip,” or transponder keys, which give off a radio signal to the car, matching it to the key. Many cars made in 1995 and later use these. ¯ Full size spare tires — Not too long ago, if a flat tire required a roadside change, drivers could rely on a full-
sized spare in the trunk or under the vehicle. According to AAA, spare tires have been replaced by tire inflator kits on millions of vehicles in the last 10 model years. Temporary, or “donut” spares, also are found in many vehicles. Finding a full-sized spare is a rare occurrence. ¯ Control knobs — Radios, heating and cooling systems and other car features are increasingly being activated by buttons or digital displays. Gone are knobs and actual levers. This may be one feature that may have decreased safety and efficiency. Buttons rather than easily manipulated knobs require drivers to take their eyes off the road to find them and engage.
