166TH JUNIATA COUNTY FAIR

Fair to have amusement rides after all

PORT ROYAL — In the age of coronavirus, the Juniata County Fair knew this year’s fair couldn’t and probably shouldn’t be exactly the same as it normally is. As a result, in early August, after being told the company that normally provides the rides carnival would be unable to do so this year, the fair posted a message on its Facebook page stating there would

each of the two Saturdays of the eight-day fair, as well as Labor Day Monday and the preceding Sunday. Both Saturdays and Labor Day Monday, rides will open at noon. On Sunday, rides open at 1 p.m. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and

be no rides or games and that the floral halls and commercial building would remain closed this year. But the fair has found a different amusement company who is willing to provide rides and games, so the fair will have these traditional fair staples after all. For those wishing to ride, a wrist band will cost $8 Tuesday on through Friday nights and $10 on

Friday, rides open at 5 p.m. Rides close at 9 p.m. each night of the fair. ride Individual tickets will cost $1 apiece. On the days a wrist band costs $10, the rides will close between 4 and 5 p.m. each night.

166TH JUNIATA COUNTY FAIR

Speedway to be even busier this year Facility to host events 7 of 8 days of fair week

PORT ROYAL — In what may have in years past seemed like an impossible task, the Port Royal Speedway will be even busier than it has been recently during Juniata County Fair week. Not only will the renown race track play host to several nights of elite-level dirt racing, it will also serve as the facility for truck and tractor pulls and a rodeo over the eight days of the 166th Juniata County Fair. It all begins as the fair does — on Saturday, Sept. 5 — when the annual Butch Renninger Memorial is held. That event — one of the biggest of the year for the ULMS late models — will pay $5,333 to the winner. The card will also see 410 sprint cars and limited late models take to the track. Tickets on this night are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Pit passes cost $35 each. The proceedings are set to begin at 6 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 6, the Interstate Truck and Tractor Pullers will put on a show in front of the main grandstand. Admission to this

On Monday, Sept. 7, the rare treat of daytime racing comes to the Speed Palace as it’s the 69th annual Labor Day Classic. Action begins at 1 p.m. with 410 sprints, limited late models and four-cylinder pure stocks on the card. It’s also a much more easily affordable ticket as infield general admission is just $5.

Grandstand general admission is $12. Pit passes cost $30. Tuesday, Sept. 8 is the lone scheduled quiet day for the track. The action begins at 7 p.m. with admission costing $25 for adults, $10 for students and $35 for a pit pass. On Friday, Sept. 11, it’s the annual Night Before the 50 as once again the All-Star Circuit of Champions will pay $6,000 to win. Late models will race for a $3,000 prize. It is the last points race for the 410 sprints and late models. Admission is $30 per adult, $15 per student and $40 for a

There is also a non-qualifiers race before the feature event. Tickets are $35 per adult, $20 per student and $40 for reserved seating of all ages. Pit passes will cost $45. The rain date for the 50 is Sunday, Sept. 13. For the most up-todate racing information about fair week, visit www.portroyalspeedway.com.

Tuscarora 50 draws many of the best sprint car drivers

PORT ROYAL — Once again, many of the best sprint car drivers on the planet today will invade Port Royal Speedway during Juniata County Fair week, all hoping to take home the richest prize ever offered at “The Speed Palace” — $53,000 to the man who crosses the finish line first in the 53rd annual Tuscarora 50 on the fair’s closing Saturday night, Sept. 12. The event — on the short list of the most prestigious sprint car races found anywhere — will once again bring three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and former Indy Racing League champion Tony Stewart and his All-Star Circuit of Champions to Port Royal. Aaron Reutzel won last year’s race and the $52,000 check that came with it. The most recent back-to-back winner of the Tuscarora 50 is Lance Dewease when he took the checkers in 2016 and again in 2017. Dewease has been to victory

Kreitz Jr. won the 50 three times over a 20-year span between 1993 and 2013. Qualifying time trials are set to begin at 6:30 p.m. A general admission ticket costs $35 for an adult with student tickets costing $20. Reserved seating is $40 per ticket

166TH JUNIATA COUNTY FAIR

2020 Farmer of the Year to be revealed Sunday night

PORT ROYAL — The 2020 Juniata County Farmer of the Year award will be presented at 6 p.m. Sunday in the show ring at the Livestock Barn. Presented annually by the Juniata County Agricultural

Society, it is designed to honor one person or family who has dedicated his or her life to agriculture in Juniata County. Last year’s winner was Charles Shaner, of Thompsontown

This year’s fair is 166th edition to take place in Juniata County The Juniata County Fair was first organized on Feb. 26, 1852, and incorporated Dec. 10, 1859. Using a board of directors to operated the fairgrounds, the format has remained unchanged since that time. Originally, fairs were held alternately between Perrysville (now known as Port Royal) and Mifflintown. The original Port Royal grounds south of town were found to be too small in 1887, at which time a larger tract of land was purchased to the north. Those are the same grounds still used today. Originally, the fair was primarily a showcase for agrarian enterprise, but has slowly changed over the years and moved away from its roots. In 1953, weekly automobile racing began on the track that was originally built for horse racing. The Port Royal Speedway continues to be a major draw to the fair today. The fair has been held every year except during the Civil War.
