So that pretty much shows the flow of Grandpap’s diary. When he speaks of working for S.H. Fisher, that would be his brother. Samuel Houston was the third born to Sam and Mertie. When he speaks of Harry Brindle, of course he’s talking about Grandmom’s father. Grant Crum was married to his sister Ada, or as he always referred to her, Ade. We’ll be hearing about other family members and neighbors, but usually only as in reference to work.
I won’t venture to write every entry, just the highlights, but I do want to do most of it as he wrote it, so the reader can feel somewhat his thoughts.
At this time he owned no car. He did his plowing and so forth, with mules. We will learn their names, but he never speaks of his children, nor does he call Grandma anything but the wife. If they wanted to go very far, his father Sam would take them in his car.

That is all he wrote. He has Oct 1927, 21 got Dearborn tire from Sears Roebuck $5.98. Underneath, in large writing “Move 1927”. And that is how he ends it.
I’m assuming this was the time they moved to Hesston for whatever reason. Aunt Helen told me she had gone to school for a time at Redstone Ridge school. That school is still standing, though unused for anything, but still in good shape. It, like the Entrekin school is brick. He didn’t sell the Ridge farm, for they moved back there and were living there when they moved down to the last homestead in 1942.
There are some other entries throughout the book, but they are ledgers he kept which he titled In Account With. A lot of the entries dealt with his sister Ada. Some were for coal some for calves some Milk check, most just simply “By Cash”.
What that all means I couldn’t begin to say, but across each is written “ Settled”.
Well it’s been an interesting journey. I feel I know Grandpap a little better. He worked hard,
