Oh Baby 2023

Voting is now open for your favorite 2022 baby photo

For the fifth consecutive year, The Sentinel has invited baby photo submissions for infants born in the previous year. Throughout the pages of this edition, you’ll find photos of babies born in the 2022 calendar year. Parents and grandparents from the Juniata Valley uploaded some of the most adorable pictures imaginable. If you’d like to see the photos online, just go to lewistownsentinel.com/baby or find the button on the Sentinel’s homepage. You can vote for your favorite photo once per day online, now through February 7, 2023. The entry with the most votes will receive a family photo shoot courtesy of Katie Bingaman Photography. The winner will be announced in The Sentinel and on the contest webpage after February 9.

In addition, one winner was randomly drawn from all photo submissions to win a youth bike. That winner was the Myles Hopple entry, as submitted by parents Paige Storey and Timothy Hopple, Jr. of Mifflintown. Thank you to everyone who entered a baby or voted, making “Oh Baby” an annual tradition.

Developmental Milestones: What’s Normal?

As your new baby grows from infant to toddler to preschooler, it’s so much fun to watch the new skills they develop: smiling, crawling, talking, and walking. It’s hard to believe how quickly they change in such a short time.

While it’s exciting to see your child learning and doing new things, you might wonder and worry about whether they’re developing skills at the right time. Should my four-month-old be reaching for toys? Should my 11-monthold be talking? It’s difficult to avoid comparing your child to other children or worrying about whether your child is progressing normally. It can be even harder when we’re scrolling through social media feeds, seeing what everyone else’s children are doing.

Along with physical development, milestones include social or emotional skills, communication, and the ability to think and reason. As our young children grow, it’s important to remember that there is a broad range of “normal” when it comes to developmental milestones. Although there are general timelines for reaching these milestones, there’s a wide range for when skills de-

velop. For example, a child can begin walking anywhere from nine to 18 months and saying their first words anywhere from eight to 12 months.

Babies learn in progression, building one skill off another. When learning expressive speech, for example, first they’ll start to coo, then they’ll babble and eventually they will make sounds that are associated with meaning. When your child’s brain is focused on developing one skill, such as expressive speech, other skills might plateau for a while. So if there’s a delay in one area, there’s not necessarily a need to worry. Many children who experience minor delays will eventually develop that skill and continue to progress normally.

You can speak with your doctor about any concerns.

What can parents do to help their child hit developmental milestones? The best thing you can do is be present. Simply spending time with your child, exploring the world through various activities, will help your child develop skills.

It’s important to note that it isn’t a parent’s job to “teach” their children milestones. For example, you can’t teach your

baby to crawl. What you can do is give her opportunities and motivation. In the case of crawling, for example, offer plenty of tummy time and put her favorite toy just out of reach. Remember to have constant supervision of babies on their tummies if they are not able to roll over naturally with ease.

It’s a good idea to be familiar with general timeframes for milestones—not to make you anxious, but to be aware of what questions you’ll want to ask during your child’s checkups. If you have any concerns, let the doctor know. Although many diagnoses can’t be made until your child is older, having delayed milestones doesn’t necessarily imply a problem. A pediatrician’s job is to continue to screen their patients and assess the entire clinical picture. Depending on the degree of delay or other concerns, evaluation by a therapist, hearing specialist, or developmental pediatrician might be recommended.
