IN LOVING MEMORY

ANicole Michele Augustine

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nicole Michele Augustine of Lewistown, on June 21, 2024 at the age of 44 following a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Nicole was born in Altoona on Aug. 15, 1979 to the late Ronald Augustine and Rebecca (McDowell) Heisler. She was raised

in Hollidaysburg by her mother and her husband Alan, and spent time with her father and his wife, Elaine, in Greenwood.

Nicole is survived by Melissa Maxwell with whom she had a loving and devoted relationship for 21 years, her brother Derek Heisler and his wife Rachel, brother Anthony Augustine and his fiance’ Kayla Frye, nephew Brayden and niece Harper, aunt Vicky McDowell, with whom she had a special bond, many cousins, extended family, close friends and coworkers who all held a special place in her heart.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Robert and Arlene McDowell, and Marjorie Augustine.

Nicole attended Hollidaysburg Area High School where she graduated in 1997. Following high school, she attended Juniata College and graduated in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting and Negotiation Studies. She began her career at Mifflin County Sav-

ings Bank where she advanced to Vice President and Chief Financial Officer. She took great pride in her career.

Nicole was a true example of a free spirit. Her life will be remembered as one filled with laughter, kindness, creativity, gratitude and unwavering strength.

She loved deeply and accepted everybody, was strong in her belief that there is joy to be found even in hard times, and that love, peace and kindness are all that matters.

Nicole was often shy, but people were drawn to her and immediately felt a connection. She was a kindred spirit and always made people feel comfortable. Her laughter was infectious, and her smile was like sunshine. Both will be deeply missed by everybody who loved her.

Nicole’s life was filled with music. She enjoyed going to shows with her friends and family and loved the bond and sense of community that was created through music, laughter and shared experience of watching her fa-

vorite bands play. The music of the Grateful Dead touched her profoundly and was always playing in the background of her life. She also enjoyed the music of Jimmy Buffett and the carefree feeling it created. No doubt she found Jerry and Jimmy in heaven and will listen to the music play there for eternity.

Nicole had a gentle spirit and compassion for all creatures and felt that even the smallest should be protected. She had a reunion at the rainbow bridge with her dogs Lola, Harbour and Shona and her cats, Ripple Sunshine Daydream, Stella Blue and Bama Breeze. The love she had for her dog Aiko and cat Cassidy, who remain earth-side, will continue until she can meet them at the bridge someday. Nicole was drawn to the outdoors and loved spending time wandering in nature in her bare feet. She would often drag Melissa into the woods to camp, find waterfalls and take walks through the trees. She would spend hours taking beautiful pictures

of trees, water and rocks and was a talented amateur photographer. She recently became an avid backyard bird watcher and was excited to see the tree swallows return to their nest in the backyard each year. She loved gardening and took great pride in her summer garden and growing flowers to attract birds and butterflies. She enjoyed trips to the greenhouse where she would look for unique things to grow.

Nicole had a deep love for her brothers and a bond that broke through the differences in the ages between them. She had a tremendous amount of pride in the fact that they both grew up to be good men and she cherished every moment she spent with them. Nicole loved creating memories and sharing laughter with them both. To honor the way that Nicole lived her life and to carry on her legacy, all who know and love her should live with a sense of joy and wonder. Make the best of each day, face life’s challenges head on,

treat others with kindness, and always find a way to “smile, smile, smile”.

The family will receive friends at Blairmont Club in Holidaysburg, on Sunday June 30,2024 from 2:00p to 4:00pm.

Nicole wished for a celebration of life with music, food and laughter. This gathering of friends and family is being planned and will be announced soon.

Nicole asked that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Rescue Our Furry Friends where she served as Treasurer for several years. The address is: P.O. Box 6, Lewistown, PA 17044.

Ray was a deeply beloved father, uncle, cousin, brother, and friend. While I lost my beloved dad, many have lost a friend and loved one in him. He has been a rock to many, a master at sarcastic humor and witty timing to others, and even a glorious pain in the neck, to what I’m sure is a small select few (because no matter what happened between you in your lives, once you were marked as important to him, he’d be by your side if you needed him). There was so much more to him than just dad, though to us that was his greatest roll - he was also a friend, a coworker and colleague, a cousin, brother, It was his wish that we laugh and reminisce, and smile together during this time.

SJohn Lee Spicher

John Lee Spicher, age 88, of Woodcrest Villa, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, died from pulmonary fibrosis at home surrounded by family and under the strawberry moon, on Friday, June 21, 2024.

John was born Sept. 12, 1935, in Belleville, Pennsylvania, the second child of Jonas Phillip and Rachel Ann (Yoder) Spicher. He grew up on a dairy farm during the Great Depression and attended Cedar Hill, a one-room country school. From childhood, he was intrigued with God’s creation, curious about how things function and what his role in the process should be. Frugality, hard work, integrity, acceptance of evolving conditions, and respect for others are among the values he learned from his Amish parents.

John met Virginia Joy Peachey in seventh grade; they married 12 years later and reared three

children in Irwin, Pennsylvania. John strove and advocated for education despite the distances it sometimes placed between him and his background, which he nonetheless respected. He graduated from Belleville Mennonite School, received a BS in Biology from Eastern Mennonite College, and attended the Medical College of Virginia. A certified American Society of Safety Engineers member, he enjoyed a 30-year career at the Research and Development Division of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Pittsburgh. On retirement, he earned an MA in Organizational Leadership from Geneva College, and for 13 years worked in various roles in the Science Center at Eastern Mennonite University.

John deeply appreciated the Mennonite Church, and for many years drove 50 miles round-trip each week for worship and fellowship with congregations in Pittsburgh, and later in Scottdale. Service afforded him meaningful opportunities to exercise the abilities he believed God had given him, and he enjoyed sharing time and resources with organizations such as Scottdale Mennonite Credit Union, Laurelville Retreat Center, Allegheny Mennonite Conference, Eastern Mennonite University, and Harrisonburg Gift and Thrift. He especially liked working at Laurelville in support of youth camping. He sought adventures, learning, and travel for as long as he could, and treasured trips to the Atlantic shore with his family.

He is survived by Virginia Joy (Peachey) Spich-

er, his wife of nearly 65 years; children, James (Carol Burkhart) Spicher, Mountville, PA; Julia Spicher Kasdorf (Philip Ruth), Bellefonte, PA; and Jefferson (Jean Leaman) Spicher of Albany, OR; brother, David (Effie Yoder) Spicher, of Belleville; sister, Salome (Charles) Yoder, Mount Morris, MI; sister, Rachel (Lee) Hershberger, Whittier, NC; brother, Thomas (Sharon Peachey) Spicher, Huntingdon. John and Virginia’s grandchildren are Jonathan (Jenny Hochstetler) Spicher, Klamath Falls, OR; Jason (Krista Nyce) Spicher, Fort Collins, CO; Amelia Kasdorf, Bellefonte; Daniel Spicher, Denver, CO; and Ethan Spicher, Harrisonburg, VA.

Carol was born on Dec. 5, 1934, in Webster, Pa. She was the third daughter of John Rigby Taylor and his wife, Emily Reher. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise Koller and Elaine Rook. During her

lifetime, Carol gave birth to three sons, William Adam, who died in infancy; Robert Lee, Jr., retired and living in Mifflinburg; and Paul Logan, working at First Quality and living in his parent’s home in Treaster Valley; and one daughter, Laurel Beth, retired and living in southern Missouri.

Carol attended the Webster Public Schools, The Rostraver Township High School, and continued her professional education at Douglass Business College in Charleroi, Pa. with an associate degree in Commercial Secretarial Science.

Her employment began with the Gimbels Department Store in Pittsburgh and other businesses around Pittsburgh. The majority of her employment experience was in The Warren County School District starting as a teacher’s aide, and advancing to secretary and then to the principal, from which she retired in 1993. Carol provided continuous voluntary service in 10 small Presbyterian churches throughout her lifetime.

With ambition for church-related labor and service, Carol met and married Robert L. Zorn, a pre-ministerial student attending Waynesburg College. They were married in her home church in Webster on Sept. 5, 1951, and they continued in

church-related ministries for the next 70 years.

After they married, Robert and Carol continued to Western Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh. There, Robert accomplished ordination and Carol provided a home for their family. (Guy Gray and Wally Rummel were also students at Western during this time.)

Tragically, in Dec. of 1958, a son, William Adam, was born to Carol and Robert, but he lived only a few hours. Since that time, three other children were born and have grown to a purpose. Meanwhile, Robert became student pastor at a two, then fivechurch parish. Then, as is sometimes the practice, the clergy couple relocated to a three-church parish in Mifflin County, known as the Westminster Larger Parish, consisting of the Milroy, Burnham, and Vira Presbyterian Churches.

After 10 years of this ministry, it became necessary because of a growing family to relocate to another parish of two churches in Lake Erie Presbytery, consisting of the Tidioute and Irvine Churches. Carol found employment in Warren County School District.

In these later years of her life, Carol, an artist in her own right, had found a little time to continue her father’s artistic skill which she inherited. Her favorite subjects included

flowers, children, English and Amish, small animals, and rural scenes. In addition to portraits of herself and her husband, she provided many works of art that were displayed in many schools, churches, and homes throughout the area. She loved female mystery authors and was skilled at doing crossword puzzles.

Carol’s painting did not prevent her participation in other community activities, which included serving as a 4-H Club leader and serving on the committee for the acquisition and development of the Youth Park in Reedsville.

Our lives are forever fuller and richer because of Carol. It is no longer either/or; but forever is Bob and Carol.

A visitation was to be held from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Milroy Presbyterian Church, 321 S. Main Street, Milroy. The funeral service was to begin at 11 a.m. with Pastor Joy Kaufman officiating. The burial was to follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in Milroy.
