So much to do In Southern Juniata County Guide highlights less explored areas of region By RAINIE MINER

Special to The Sentinel

Recently, the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau released a new set of itineraries, revolving around their Explore Southern Juniata County initiative. The guide is divided into three sections, each focusing on a weekend centered around Southern Juniata County’s main attractions. These attractions are the Port Royal Speedway, the Buttonwood Campground, and LoveTwo Eat. The itinerary also includes a bonus section that offers additional landmarks to visit, along with a few more activities for visitors to check out. The goal of this initiative is to bring more visitors to the area by displaying all there is to offer. “We want people to not only come, but to stay a while,” shared Buffie Boyer, communications director at the Juniata River Valley Visitors Bureau. “The more visitors we have will help our local businesses grow.” Juniata County is a fairly well known area, but the hope is to get people to explore beyond the races and the campground. “It’s a beautiful place to visit, but it isn’t very explored,” said Boyer. “Speed Palace Tailgreat” is the first section of the handout. This section highlights the best food for race day, the local distillery, lodging, and of course, the Port Royal Speedway. This itinerary is geared towards tailgaters, giving you plenty of ideas for entertainment when you’re away from the track. “Handpicked” is the second section, highlighting LoveTwo Eat, a farm store that sells all homegrown, locally made products. LoveTwo Eat is also home to Remington the Zonkey, and other farm animals that you could meet during your visit. This section focuses on farm to fork

This itinerary shows some of the beautiful things nature has to offer in Southern Juniata County. The third portion is titled “RV There Yet?” which encompasses all of Southern Juniata County’s greatest adventures. The section shares numerous activities that are fun for the whole family, including the Lewistown Narrows Canal Park, the four covered bridges locally, and all the best ice cream shops.

laser tag, river tubing, and a swimming pool. The bonus section of the itinerary suggests local landmarks, food and drink stops, activities, and more. These additions are important parts of Southern Juniata County and deserve to be highlighted in the itinerary. Southern Juniata County stands out because of its quiet, laid back nature. “We’re very authentic,” said Boyer. “We aren’t trying to be something we’re not.” People love finding undiscovered areas, and Southern Juniata County is definitely a hidden gem. “We don’t realize how lucky we are to have this all at our fingertips,” said Boyer, talking about the beauty of the area around us. While the guide was created to help visitors find things to do during their time in Southern Juniata County, it is not intended to be followed directly. The goal of the guide is to help tourists begin their trip in the area, but there is also hope that people will find things to do beyond the itinerary, exploring our hidden gem. Courthouse renovations continue 222

“Hopefully this upgrade will be something that serves this county as a whole.” Jim Bahoik Juniata County Administrator

By RAINIE MINER

Special to The Sentinel

As Juniata County is hard at work to renovate their courthouse, many details are shared about the changes and upgrades being made to the facilities. A majority of the changes will be made on the 1979 wing of the building, but there will be upgrades to the entire facility. In the 1979 wing of the courthouse, a major upgrade is occurring in the Emergency Operations Center, which will also become the home to a new emergency training center and a meeting facility, with flexibility to serve in a different way during a potential emergency. “It’s going to be a multi-functional area,” shared County Administrator, Jim Bahorik. There will also be a portion of this wing used to securely hold prisoners. In the “Sheriff’s House” portion of the building, there will be upgrades, converting the former prison into meeting areas, undesignated workspaces, and storage. Adjustments will also be made to create better air quality within the building, including new heating and cooling units being installed throughout the building. A sally port will be added to the property, where prisoners will be transported in and out of the building. This area will provide a safe and secure location for the delivery of prisoners. There will also be a second story built onto the 1979 wing. With the successful relocation of the power lines completed by PPL Electric on May 31 which was vital for the construction to begin, the second story over the 1979 wing of the former prison is well under way. “It was designed to have a second story, but that was never done, so we’re doing that now,” explained Bahorik. The second story will hold a chiller, which will be used to cool the former prison and the courthouse. This new story will house upgraded physical plant equipment in addition to also being used for storage space. Another change to the property will be upgraded handicap access on the Bridge Street entrance. Members of the community and staff members will be able to enter through the front of the building after a perma-

Visual changes to the building will include a more aesthetically pleasing appearance that fits in better within the local area. This project will cost the county an estimated $4,398,840.00, which will be funded by money awarded through the American Rescue Plan Act, along with a loan that was authorized on April 19, 2022.

Upgrades including the relocation of electrical lines, and the installation of the handicap entrance have begun to take place. “Hopefully this upgrade will be something that serves this county as a whole,” stated Bahorik. The county continues to take every measure to ensure the project proceeds safely and with as little disruption as possible.

PennDOT improves bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad PORT ROYAL — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) began work in mid-September 2022 on the SR 75/A03 Bridge over Norfolk Southern Railroad to replace the existing bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Port Royal. According to a PennDOT press release, the $4 million project also includes paving, piping, inlets, manholes, water and sewer line replacements, sidewalks, guide rail,

and pavement markings. PennDOT stated that they coordinated their work on this project with Norfolk Southern Railroad. This project’s construction is performed under a detour using SR 75, SR 3002, SR 35, and SR 333. PennDOT initially expected to complete the project in mid-September. However, the department did not open the bridge on Sept. 1, due to safety concerns. According to a press re-

lease, PennDOT is working diligently with all stakeholders to mitigate the impacts of this delay. The contractor, HRI Inc., of State College, Pa., will allocate additional laborers and equipment to this project when site conditions warrant to complete it as quickly as possible without sacrificing quality standards or the safety of stakeholders. The press release stated that the detour around

the bridge would remain in place until project completion. The detour uses Route 3002 (Old 22 Road/ Main Street), Route 35, and Route 333 before returning to Route 75. This detour has functioned efficiently during this project resulting in minimal delays or traffic queueing. The contractor continues to maintain access for homeowners near the bridge. As work progresses, PennDOT makes project infor-

Industrial Park in midst of expansion BY GREG WILLIAMS Sentinel reporter

gwilliams@lewistownsentinel.com MIFFLINTOWN – Codenamed in economic development discussions as “Phase Four,” the Juniata Industrial Park’s latest expansion includes 29 acres, or 12 lots. Of the new lots, businesses have committed to eight of them. Now, the industrial park is hoping to find new tenants to fill the remaining four lots in the expansion. “We’re very, very close to completion,” said Dane Walters, marketing director for Juniata Business and Industry. “I think they’ll be sold by the end of the year or early 2024, depending on how fast the grants come through. “We still have some availability. It’s mainly local people who have been buying them and expanding a little,” he added. “Others in the county also want the room to expand (in the future).” The remaining four lots are connected to water, sewer and fiber optics, as is the rest of Phase Four. Through the end of 2028, the lots are in a tax-free zone. The Keystone Opportunity Zone Initiative allows businesses to forego paying local real estate taxes and certain state taxes. “Right now, we have three lots that are adjacent to each other and one up above,” Walters explained. “They’re centrally located with great on- and off-access to the four-lane highway.” Walters wouldn’t reveal any of the new businesses that have purchased the new Phase Four lots. “We just need to close out the paperwork,” he said. The companies that have set up shop in the industrial park are mainly manufacturing or truck-
